America didn’t have many heroes in the early months of the War of 1812. But Capt. James Lawrence was one. In fact, he was kind of a rock star in the young U.S. Navy in early 1813. Although he never stepped foot in Gwinnett County, Lawrence’s name is known to every Gwinnettian through the county seat, Lawrenceville. The town turned 195 on Thursday, and while most people who’ve heard about its namesake have heard of his famous dying command, “Don’t give up the ship,” there is a lot more to his

Lawrenceville historian Mary Frazier Long said the name is a source of pride for city residents who are at least somewhat familiar with the story behind the town’s name. “I think they are generally real proud that it was named for Lawrence,” she said. “They

Gwinnett police are investigating an incident involving a driver who stopped at a Lilburn-area day care to seek help for her passenger who had been shot Saturday.
Authorities don’t believe the incident happened at the day care facility at 4050 Darling Court off Killian Hill Road. Police are not sure of the motive, but they said the shooting may have been drug-related. Officers were sent to the Childtime parking
lot at about 3:41 p.m. When they arrived, the driver said her passenger, a 21-year-old white man, had been shot. “We don’t know if they picked this place specifically or if it was convenient based on circumstances,” spokesman Sgt. Jake Smith said
