DULUTH — After an elegant evening of celebration and awards, Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation’s Cornerstone Society MORE ONLINE Gala ended in laughter. Visit gwinnettdailypost.com for photos from the gala. There was hardly a straight face in the house after Seth Meyers took the stage and greeted the blacktie crowd. “I don’t know if you’ve been enjoying the presidential election as much as I have,” Meyers said. “As a comedian, it’s been a fantastic time. It has been a boom time to be a comedian.” From there Meyers, who hosts “Late Night With Seth Meyers” on NBC, delivered a speech filled with jokes, quips, personal anecdotes and a laughter-inducing impression of Matthew McConaughey.

In recent months, authorities have made myriad allegations of crime and corruption in Georgia prisons: guards smuggling all manner of contraband and helping purported drug traffickers, inmates with cellphones running scams against unsuspecting prey on the outside. But the case of Hancock State Prison inmate Gordon Anthony Evans would appear to be the worst. The purported gang member is accused of Gordon Anthony helping plan the murder Evans of a young man who was gunned down near Lawrenceville in November, officials confirmed this week. “The evidence will show that Evans was heavily involved in the gang and the murder plot while in prison,” said Dan Mayfield, chief assistant Gwinnett County district attorney. Charged with murder on Feb. 12, Evans, a 34-year-old who’s been in state prison a decade, and co-defendant Dossie Davon Dossie Davon Mann, Mann 19, of Norcross, arrived at the county jail this week. Mann is accused of firing the shots that killed Jeffery A.J. “Brook” Anderson, 25, of Suwanee. Apparently through party to a crime statutes, Evans is facing the same charges although he was in the Sparta prison at the time of the shooting. Authorities have been tight-lipped about the case so far, releasing no motive as to why Anderson, a Rooms To Go warehouse worker and father of a toddler, would be the subject of a hit. Mayfield said new information would come out in the preliminary hearing for the suspects. It’s set for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. “This is going to be a case with public interest, particularly with the recent (Georgia Department of Corrections) arrests for corruption and smuggling,” he said.
