Gwinnett’s groundhog predicts an early spring
By Katie Morris

After a streak of unseasonably warm, spring-like weather, it’s not hard to believe General Beauregard Lee’s prediction that spring is right around the corner. When Georgia’s official weather prognosticator emerged from his antebellumstyle mansion Tuesday morning at the Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn, he did not see his shadow. It took some coaxing to get a sleepy Beau out of bed to make his prediction. Ranch staffers enticed him with a bowl of Waffle House hash browns outside his door, and Gwinnett Braves mascot Chopper led the eagerly awaiting crowd in several rounds of cheering “Go Beau!” It finally took a few ringings of the large bell outside of his home before Beau popped out and predicted an early spring. Mike and Mariah Lovin have always celebrated Groundhog Day, but this was their first time seeing Beau’s prediction live. The Dacula couple came prepared with signs of encouragement reading “Go Beau!” and “#It’sBeauTime.” Their fondness for the holiday stems from their love for the 1993 movie “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murray. “We’re going to do this and then go home and watch the movie,” Mariah said. The big-time Steelers fans said they plan to someday take a trip up to Pennsylvania to see Punxsutawney Phil, but will definitely be back to cheer on Beau next year if they don’t make it up north.

According to manager Codi Reeves, Beau has a 93 to 95 percent accuracy rate in his time at the Yellow River Game Ranch, which began 35 years ago. “The blizzard of ’93 stumped him but other than that he’s been pretty spot on,” Reeves said.
With overcast skies and thick fog blanketing the game ranch, many were speculating beforehand that there would be no shadow. “Last year we had more folks that wanted more winter weather, which is the first time I can ever remember that,” Reeves said. See GROUNDHOG, Page 3A
