Run the Reagan came back popular as ever this year — more popular, actually. More than 1,800 runners showed up in Snellville to participate in either the 5K, 10K or half marathon races down Ronald Reagan Parkway Saturday morning. That’s more than double last year’s attendance, said Run the Reagan Inc. Treasurer Michelle Hamilton. It’s also more than Hamilton or the rest of the organization expected from this year’s race. “Our main goal was to have 1,500 runners,” Hamilton said. “We’ve far surpassed that at this point.” Some runners who came out

Saturday were old veterans ready to tackle the course again. Grayson resident Brian O’Neal came back to win the 10K — the same race he won last year. “I just came back to defend the title,” he said. Before he started conquering the 10K, O’Neal spent four years running the event’s half marathon. Last year, the 47-year-old decided to switch to the 10K, which he said was a bit easier for his body to handle. Not all participants in Saturday’s races were as seasoned as O’Neal. Some were completely new to the scene. Youth running Justin Randle, a student at Brookwood High School, places first See RACE, Page 7A

Exercise. A family activity.
There will be a new face in charge Family Promise of Gwinnett County come Wednesday. The organization, which works with the county’s homeless population through a variety of services, will welcome Lawrenceville resident Matt Elder as its new executive director on that day. In an introductory news release, Elder already began laying out the issues he felt the group should work on. “More than 1,000 people who live in Gwinnett County can be classified as Matt Elder either homeless or precariously close to being homeless, with thousands more living paycheck to paycheck and praying that new expenses don’t suddenly appear,” Elder said in a statement. Elder will replace Chuck Ferraro, who had led Family Promise from 2013 to February. Ferraro told board members and supporters in a note with the group’s last newsletter that “the Lord was calling him to move on,” Family Promise Board of Trustees Public Relations Committee Chairwoman Sarah Zimmerman said. The new executive director comes into the position having spent the last four years being involved with the county’s community development, affordable housing and homeless programs. He is a longtime Gwinnettian, with his family moving to the county when he was 4. He grew up in Gwinnett’s school system and later went on to get his bachelor’s degree in political science from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville before coming back to settle down with his wife, Amanda. Family Promise said Elder’s priorities early on will include growing its financial support base, making the community more aware of

With our busy lives, it’s hard to fit work, family and personal time in every day. Here’s a thought: combine them. Spend time with your kids exercising. You’ll feel better, connect with your kids and teach them habits they’ll carry for the rest of their lives. Best of all, you’ll be around to see them exercising with their kids. If you’re starting an exercise program, call 404-851-6550 for some heart advice.
