Deal and his wife, Sandra, attended the announcement at the PayneCorley House in Duluth, and in one of the more light-hearted moments at the event, the governor presented the picture to
Coleman, R-Duluth. It was of a man who looked like the state representative, but it was not the Gwinnett legislator. The man was dressed as a Native American chief. The governor joked it was what Coleman looked like when he was “on the warpath.”

BUFORD — A 19-hour armed standoff ended tragically Wednesday night when police confirmed that both Thy Ho and the 2-year-old son he held hostage died. Police said that Ho, 43, died from Thy Ho an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and that his son, Phillip Nguyen, also died from a gunshot wound inflicted by Ho. Both the boy and Ho had been rushed to area hospitals around 4:30 p.m., with what were described as life-threatening injuries after a standoff that began around 10 p.m. on Tuesday. “This is a traumatic situation for everyone involved,” Gwinnett County police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera. At about 4:30 p.m., there was hope when radio traffic said, “the baby has been extricated, the baby has been
Downtown Duluth is one step closer to getting a bookish new addition. Gwinnett County commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement with the city on Tuesday to build a new SPLOST-funded replacement Duluth library branch across Main Street from Duluth City Hall. The City Council has already approved the agreement. “It fits right in to our plan for downtown,” Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris said. “We’re trying to make it a walkable downtown with an assortment of amenities and adding an up-to-date library that’s going to have a technology focus is a great attraction for all generations.” The new library will be 22,000 square feet in size, which will put it at about twice the size of the existing Duluth branch, which is located at 3480 Duluth Park Lane. Although the agreement is now in place, there is still some work that

extricated.” With that, a SWAT vehicle rushed out of a subdivision on Beyers Landing Drive as SWAT personnel handed the bleeding baby to awaiting personnel in an ambulance. The boy was taken to an awaiting Children’s Health-
care of Atlanta helicopter, which was sitting less than a mile away on Doc Hughes Road. He was then taken to CHOA in critical, life-threatening condition, Pihera said. Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Deon Washington said Phillip did not survive his injuries. “I don’t know what led to the shooting or what prompted the suspect to begin firing,” said Pihera, who could not
confirm if police fired any shots. As SWAT members entered the master bedroom, the suspect shot himself, Pihera said, but the location of the shot was unknown. Minutes after the child left in an ambulance, another ambulance left with lights and sirens on carrying the boy’s father, an armed suspect in
A two-week operation involving 13 agencies to crack down on distracted driving led by Gwinnett County police yielded more than 600 citations and warnings to drivers and pedestrians. It took place between Dec. 14 and 28 as 211 officers from around the area participated to address distracted driving and pedestrian safety, police spokeswomen Cpl. Michele Pihera said. They made 1,988 citizen contacts, handed out 922 flyers, issued 298 pedestrian citations or warnings and 323 distracted driver citations or warnings. There was one fatality. It happened on Dec. 16 when a 34-year-old man was struck and killed while riding his skateboard across Peachtree Industrial Boulevard near Tench Road. It was at night and raining. The driver was not cited or charged. At a news conference last month to announce the operation, Gwinnett Police Chief Butch Ayers said he focused particularly on crashes involving pedestrians.
