• Rice Station Rice Station offers a fusion of Chinese, Japanese and Thai selections, with more than 140 items on its menu. The most popular selections are the Shanghai sesame chicken — lightly battered white meat chicken stir fried with mixed vegetables and a white sweet sesame sauce — and the Kung Pao chicken. The most popular Thai dishes are the Thai basil and the panang curry, both made with a choice of tofu, beef, shrimp, chicken, pork or seafood. But the wings and burgers still top the list of most popular menu items. Dakota’s also serves up ribeye, T-bone and sirloin steaks, along with ribs slathered with a signature rib sauce and a couple pasta dishes. 1304 Atlanta Highway, Auburn. 770-676-0957. www.dakotasbarandgrill.com. • Bushels Seafood Cafe Bushels’ 2010 summer menu, which runs through September, is an expansive list of the myriad ways seafood can be prepared, from grilled, fried and boiled gulf white shrimp to steamed, oven-broiled and stuffed crabs. The shrimp, garlic crabs and crawfish are the most popular menu selections. All food is cooked to order so customers can expect a minimum 10 minute wait. Bushels Seafood Cafe also serves a variety of fish — flounder, grouper, red snapper, catfish, salmon and tilapia — lobster, alligator tail, gumbo, chicken fingers, burgers, po’ boys, wings and a bevy of sides, including

ARTS Theater welcomes Tony nominee for ‘Once on This Island’ gala Red Phoenix Theatre highlights its summer with a special weekend today and Saturday as it presents “Once on This Island,” a Broadway production that garnered eight Tony nominations. A special public preview will be held at 8 p.m. today. On Saturday, there will be a matinee at 2 p.m., and later a silent auction and black tie gala, culminating with an 8 p.m. performance. On hand to support Red Phoenix will be a familiar voice for everyone who grew up with Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” Jodi Benson has portrayed not only Ariel but is the voice of Barbie in “Toy Story 3,” as she was also in “Toy Story 2.” Benson was given a Tony nomination for her work on Broadway in “Crazy for You,” and her resume is an almost endless list of impressive credits on film, television and stage. The tie-in with the character of Ariel and “Once on This Island” is obvious. The play is an adaptation

of the fairy tale “The Little Mermaid,” only the setting is in Haiti. A young peasant girl named Ti Moune tests the strength of her love against powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death. “This show is one that truly carries a beautiful message,” said Red Phoenix Artistic Director Jeffrey Scott Bailey. “It tells us that moments of tragedy and loss can bring us together as a community. It is also one of those shows that starts out like a rocket and is perfectly paced. The audience is always sad for it to end.”

“Once on This Island” is a production created by Red Phoenix’s “The Atlanta Musical Theatre Project,” and is presented through special arrangements with Music Theatre International. There are 29 individuals in the cast which include professionals, pre-professionals and experienced students (some who have agents.) Christina Daves plays the lead role of Ti Moune. Louis Griffin is Daniel, and Joy Creamson, Justin Miskin, Justin Forte, and Lauren Dawidowicz are the Gods. “My whole premise is to put people at different levels together, because they all learn something from each other,” Bailey said. “It’s an incubator. The youth have so much enthusiasm which rekindles the professionals. The

college student pre-professional get to stretch their legs performance-wise. Plus, we run everything as if it were an Equity house, with all the same rules. We take it very seriously. This is not a camp. This is professional, but it’s still fun.” The gala and silent auction will be held by Wallace Reid at the Duluth Art Gallery. Auction items include exciting artwork, evenings in downtown Atlanta with a six hour limo ride, tickets to Chastain Amphitheatre, dinners locally and in downtown Atlanta, and more. Tickets for the special July 17 gala and silent auction are $35 for special seating and $24 for general admission. The gala begins at 7 p.m. at the Duluth Art Gallery, and patrons will walk the

New Dawn Theater presents ‘Cheaper by the Dozen’ BY DEANNA ALLEN STAFF WRITER deanna.allen@ gwinnettdailypost.com

Duluth resident Theresa Kelly has four children. On stage in New Dawn Theater’s latest production, that number is multiplied by three. Kelly plays the role of Mrs. Gilbreth, the mother of 12 children ranging in age from 6 to 17. “Let’s just say it’s quite entertaining and never a dull moment,” Kelly said. Based on the real life story of Frank and Lillian Gilbreth and their sizable family, “Cheaper by the Dozen” is set in 1920 in New Jersey and follows 17-year-old Anne Gilbreth as she struggles to grow up under the careful watch of a strict father who puts his methods for improving industrial efficiency to work managing his family. The results are terribly embarrassing for Anne but create comedic scenarios for the watching audience. “People are going to be able to relate to it,” Kelly said. “Even though it’s dated back in 1920, kids are kids.” New Dawn Theater will present “Cheaper by the

Kevn Kinney said his voice has never sounded better. After a surgery four years ago to remove a cyst from his larynx, the Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ frontman said he can now sing every song from every album better than the original recordings. “It’s better musically than it’s ever been, which is frustrating because I’m almost 50,” Kinney said. “I’m 49 and I wish I would have been this good of a musician and singer back then because I think we would have made really a big difference for ourselves and the music community.” After making music for 25 years, Kinney said the band, as a whole, has never sounded better. “You can’t be a folk artist for 25 years,” Kinney

You can only be a beat poet for so long and even after so many books you become a real writer.” The Atlanta-based band will perform with its improved sound during Music at the Vines Mansion tonight. The show will include Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ favorites such as “Honeysuckle Blue” and “Straight to Hell,” as well as selections from “Whatever Happened to the Great American Bubble Factory,” the band’s first full studio album in 12 years that was released in 2009. The cinematography, production design, effects, editing, BY CHRISTY LEMIRE AP Movie Critic score, everything down the line — all superb. But unlike so many summer Driving home from a movies assigned that tag, screening of “Inception” “Inception” is no mindthe other night, my husband said to me, “I don’t less thrill ride. It’ll make know how you're going to you work, but that’s part of what’s so thrilling write about this movie.” “What, you mean with- about it. With its complicated concepts about out giving anything dreams within dreams, away?” I asked. “No,” he said. “I don’t layers of consciousness know how you’re going to and methods of manipulation, “Inception” might explain what it’s about.” Well, yes. There is that, make you want to stop a few times just to get your too. bearings. We can begin by The juggernaut of announcing, with great relief, that all the hype is Nolan’s storytelling momentum, however, justified. Writer-director Christopher Nolan’s first keeps pounding away. Even from the very film since “The Dark beginning, you may feel a Knight” is a stunningly bit off-balance, with gorgeous, technically Nolan jumping around in flawless symphony of time before dropping you images and ideas. “Memento,” the mystery- into the middle of a tense in-reverse that put Nolan conversation between on the map a decade ago, Leonardo DiCaprio as dream thief Dom Cobb, looks almost quaint by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as comparison. his right-hand man, In its sheer enormity,

Arthur, and Ken Watanabe as one of their clients. That’s part of the game, though: making us question what’s reality and what’s a product of sleep, right alongside the characters. That experience in itself may sound a bit familiar, and “Inception” does feature glimmers of mind-trip movies like “The Matrix,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and even a “Wizard of Oz” moment. At its core, it’s actually a heist movie — the triedand-true One Last Job, to be exact — but Nolan takes these elements and combines them in a way that is daringly, dazzlingly his own. So ... where were we again? Ah yes, explaining what “Inception” is about. DiCaprio’s Dom Cobb is an extractor, a sort of master thief who enters the mind while a person is dreaming to steal their secrets. Watanabe, as the powerful businessman Saito, hires Dom and his team for a different kind of crime: sneak into the subconscious of a competitor (Cillian Murphy)

and implant an idea that will ruin his empire. In return, Saito will help Dom clear his name for a crime he didn’t commit, one that’s torn him from his wife and two young children and forced him to go on the run. And so, as in any classic caper, “Inception” provides the anticipation of watching Dom assemble his crew and map out his scheme, with each person performing a specific function. While Dom is the big-picture guy, Arthur handles the details. Eames (the hugely charismatic Tom Hardy from “Bronson”) is the forger — someone who can assume another identity to control the dreamer. Yusuf (Dileep Rao) is the chemist whose concoction allows them all to turn on, tune in and drop out together. Ariadne (Ellen Page, showing an appealingly

low-key intelligence) is the architect, the one who builds the maze-like structure of the dream. Since she’s the newcomer, she also serves as our guide in this brave new world. And her name, like that of several characters, couldn’t have been a coincidence; in Greek mythology, Ariadne helps lead Theseus out of the labyrinth with a ball of red thread when he enters to slay the Minotaur. (Thanks, seventh-grade English class!) But when they all fall asleep and dream together, both as practice and during the real deal, forces from their own subconscious states enter the picture — namely Dom’s wife, Mal (Marion Cotillard), someone else whose name offers a clue. Here’s where DiCaprio infuses the character with vulnerability to complement his drive. Wistful

memories of their relationship provide the necessary heart to balance out the intense braininess of the picture, some softness to lighten the substantial heft of the machinery. And what a machine it is. You’ve seen the big set pieces countless times in the commercials: a freight train plowing through downtown traffic, DiCaprio and Page sitting calmly in a cafe surrounded by explosions, Paris folding over on top of itself, Gordon-Levitt floating through a hotel corridor. You haven’t seen anything until you've seen them on the big screen. They’re enormous yet intricately detailed, tactile while at the same time ... well, dreamlike. It’s all part of one of the year’s best films, one that will surely get even better upon repeated viewings. (Warner Bros.)

ONCE UPON A

BAD TIME ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ an over-the-top, dark film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (PG) ★★★ ★★ BY MICHAEL CLARK Movie Critic

If you want a surefire way to determine how bad or good a movie will be before the opening credits are finished, simply count the number of writers and producers. The more there are, the worse it will be. “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” has five writers and nine producers. What’s that adage — Too many cooks spoil the broth? Two of those producers are Jerry Bruckheimer and leading man Nicolas Cage who have now collaborated on six projects, with only one of them (“The Rock”) being worthy of our time and money. While technically “movies,” the remainder are little more than 2-D amusement park rides that can’t be ridden, only watched and boy do they ever get old fast. Destined to fare only slightly better than Bruckheimer’s strikingly similar

early summer turkey “Prince of Persia,” “Apprentice” will offer strong appeal to 10-yearold boys already enamored with the “Harry Potter” catalog or easily satisfied adult fanboys. Everyone else can steer clear. Beginning with a trite “once upon a time” type prologue set in the 8th century, the first of several explanations of the back story is given and it is mercifully to-the-point. Four disciples of Merlin the magician split into good and evil camps with the latter killing Merlin and then being locked away in a ceramic doll by the former. Chief do-gooder Balthazar (Cage) then spends the next 1,500 or so years walking the Earth toting around the doll while in search of “the Merlinian” — Merlin’s biological and spiritual heir. He turns out to be Dave (Jay Baruchel), a geeky, 20-something science nerd living in New York still reliving a pantswetting episode from a decade earlier that lost him the love of his life. She would be Becky (Kristen Stewart lookalike Teresa Palmer), an initially

hip and with-it college student and DJ. In an only-inthe-movies way, Dave and Becky reconnect and suddenly he’s faced with a perplexing dilemma: does he go for the power or Becky? Not bright enough to realize that if he gets the power he’ll probably get Becky anyway, the lovestruck Dave only halfway pays attention to what Balthazar is telling him, which of course affords bad guy Horvath (Alfred Molina, dependably slimy) ample opportunity to steal Dave’s magic decoder ring, break open the doll, unleash hell and destroy the world. Yawn. Teamed previously with Bruckheimer and Cage on the two relatively restrained “National Treasure” flicks, director John Turteltaub abandons any hint of finesse here and lets fly with every bell, whistle, sound effect, CGI image and explosive in the action/adventure arsenal. The result is pyrotechnic/audio overkill of the highest order which is easily on a headacheinducing par with the two “Transformer” movies. As most of the story takes

place at night or underground, the primary color is black, which only adds to our collective pain. In case you were wondering, yes, the movie does pay homage (or something like it) to “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” segment of the classic “Fantasia” with

Dave losing control of brooms, mops and his plumbing system while prepping for a date with Becky. It is fittingly clunky and serves no purpose other than to allow Disney the chance for a cut-rate, in-company tie-in. You can be sure some

Disney minion somewhere will be paying close attention to next week’s stats to see if it all paid off and there was indeed a spike in DVD sales for “Fantasia.” This company never misses a chance to make a cheap and quick buck. (Disney)

MOVIES DISC SPOTLIGHT MICHAEL CLARK

Chloe (R) Movie: ★★★★ ★ Disc: ★★★★ In more ways than one, Amanda Seyfried (“Dear John,” “Mamma Mia!”) sheds her lily-white, girl-next-door persona as the title call-girl character in director Atom Egoyan’s atmospheric erotic thriller. Recalling Hitchcock, Brian DePalma and Adrian Lyne, “Chloe” is steeped in dreamy style and semi-noir attitude which go far in making-up for its sometimes lacking and predictable narrative. The inclusion of Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore as a troubled married couple lends the film a level of gravitas that lifts it out of B-movie territory and the frank, illuminating extras are far better than expected. Technical specs: aspect ratio: Widescreen (1.85:1), audio: English (Dolby Digital 5.1), subtitles: English.

INSIDE THE PERIMETER Georgia native Corey Smith to perform at Verizon Amphitheatre BY DEANNA ALLEN STAFF WRITER deanna.allen@ gwinnettdailypost.com

Corey Smith isn’t comfortable trying to fit into a box, whether it’s the one around country music as a genre or around the breed of musician that caters to the masses. “Some artists naturally lend themselves to that sort of thing,” the 32-year-old (turning 33 next week) said. “I wasn’t cut out like that.” And it’s not something Smith has tried to change about himself or his music.

His desire to avoid being put into a box has kept him this far from pursuing opportunities with record labels, preferring to remain an independent artist. “A lot of things about my personality that would make it difficult to make it work like that,” Smith said. “A lot of the things that draw fans to my music are the things that would make it difficult for me to be presented to the masses. For one, I feel that it’s my responsibility as an artist to be very honest and to be poetic, but much like my role as a teacher, my job is to point to inconsistencies

in society and to open up people’s minds and ask questions and that require me to be pretty brutally honest sometimes.” It’s an honesty that works for Smith. The former North Gwinnett High School social studies teacher will play the largest show of his career at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta on Saturday. As an independent artist, the Georgia native has built a music career from his hometown of Jefferson up but never saw his name in lights. • See Smith, Page 17

Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, and his minions are on a mission in Universal Pictures’ “Despicable Me.” The film tells the story of one the world’s greatest villains who meets his match in three little girls.

Film Fans: ‘Despicable Me’ an enjoyable film for kids, adults minions of my own. Make sure you stay through the credits to enjoy more of their antics. Steve Carell did a great job as the evil mastermind Gru, and the little girls were cute and had some of the best lines. Smith • From Page 14 “I didn’t realize that any of that was possible. I didn’t go into (music) with some big plan,” Smith said. “I didn’t know what I was doing. I kept writing and whenever I wrote I just felt like I had to I felt like I had a sense of purpose. I can’t really describe where it came from but I was passionate about it.” His first gig came just after he graduated high school, playing cover songs three nights a week at Buffalo’s in Lawrenceville while occasionally sneaking in an original tune. It was a tough gig. “I learned quickly that it wasn’t really gratifying really,” Smith said. “I would rather be a teacher than a cover musician.” A teaching career it was. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 2001, Smith taught social studies at North Gwinnett for a couple years, bringing in his guitar on Fridays to play for his students at the end of class. “One of the reasons why I gained so much confidence in my music was that the students encouraged me so much,” he said. But it wasn’t until a show at the Georgia Theatre in December 2005 that Smith decided to leave the teaching profession to pursue a career in music. “I had played lots of small shows leading up to that, almost every small room in Athens (and venues around northeast Georgia), but that was the first venue that I played that had a legacy,” he said. “I was in awe and it point-

ed the way for me and told me this is really possible.” That show at Georgia Theater sold out in advance. Opening for Smith that night was the now Grammy-nominated Zac Brown Band. Since releasing his debut album, “Undertones,” two years prior in 2003, Smith has sold more than 150,000 albums and 700,000 singles. Still, Smith’s goal isn’t seeing a record go platinum or filling the seats at large arenas. “It never was my goal to

be a celebrity or to be on the radio,” he said. “It’s not that I don’t want to be at all, it just never was my goal. It’s a very artistic goal and it’s to master the art of expressing myself and continue being genuine and to maintain my integrity through it all. “I don’t know exactly what my message is,” he said, “but I know somewhere in my songs there is a deeper message and listeners can dig in and find what that is. I just have faith that there is a purpose to this.”
