Cops: Cause unknown in fatal I-85 wreck BY JOSHUA SHARPE

A day later, it was unclear what caused a driver to lose control on Interstate 85 near Duluth on Thursday, leading to a crash that killed two people and sent three others to the hospital. Gwinnett County police

responded to the scene, just north of Pleasant Hill Road, before 2:30 p.m. and found that a passenger car had swerved three lanes into the path of a tractor trailer, Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a news release Friday morning. “The investigator will be inspecting the vehicle to check for any vehicle

defects,” Pihera said. “Speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors.” Five people were in the car. Two adults in the back seat died on the scene. Their identities haven’t been released because the investigator is still working to identify them and notify family, Pihera said. The driver of the car, a

middle-aged man whose identity also wasn’t released, was uninjured. The two other passengers were hospitalized at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, as was the driver of the tractor trailer. The wreck and ensuing investigation led to the road being closed until about 4:30 p.m. on the northbound side.

“They say time is fleeting.” Georgette Stovall’s daughter, Samantha, used those words to open her latest update on her mother’s condition since the 51-year-old Snellville resident was hit by an SUV. Stovall had lost 40 pounds and was out doing her exercise routine before the crash. “Mom’s suffered such severe trauma to her brain stem. Trauma that cannot be reversed,” the daughter wrote Friday to supporters on Facebook. “The thing is — Momma may be there in body, but her mind is gone, and it’s never coming back.” The daughter, who couldn’t be reached immediately Saturday, said the family has decided, along with doctors, to remove life support and transfer her to hospice. The news came as a harsh blow to those who’d been pulling for Stovall since the accident. On June 23, she was walking with her black Labrador retriever, Ali, near the intersection of Bethany Church Road and Brannan Road when a Honda CRV suddenly came her way. Gwinnett County police are investigating and haven’t announced any charges for the driver, Tiffany Hayes, 31. “The investigator is still trying to determine the reason Hayes traveled into opposing traffic, ultimately hitting Stovall, but it does not appear to be an intentional act,” Cpl. Michele Pihera said last month. “Hayes could be charged at a later time.”
