Being an officer in The Salvation Army is not for the weak. Lts. Jeremy and Kristina Mockabee, who recently were named the leaders of the Gwinnett County Corps of The Salvation Army, must balance their time for family, church and the community. But the married couple’s faces light up when they speak about their commitment. They serve at-risk youth, the homeless, seniors, veterans and the less fortunate, according to the mission of the faith-based nonprofit founded in 1865. “This is a unique ministry,” Jeremy Mockabee said. “You have to have a passion to help people and not be afraid to get your hands dirty. You have to be ready to hop in the canteen (supply truck) and hug and shake hands with people who haven’t seen shelter in weeks or years.” The Mockabees were promoted from The Salvation Army’s Greenville, S.C., region. Kristina Mockabee said her family grew close to the people they worked with there, “but we’ll have them in our hearts for years to come.” They lead The Salvation Army Lawrenceville Corps church on Sugarloaf Parkway — the same place of worship they attended when they previously lived in Atlanta. The Mockabees replace Capts. Andy and Abby Miller. Jeremy Mockabee was a pilot for Delta while Kristina Mockabee worked in North Druid Hills before they started serving full time for The Army. Gwinnett County police are searching for a man accused of stealing from a Norcrossarea hotel after the manager hired him to work for $20 and a pizza. The man, who was captured on security video released Thursday, went to the Comfort Inn on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard on July 16 and told the manager he was a homeless Ohio native, police said. The manager hired him to do some work around the hotel. The man, described as black, in his early 20s and wearing a green Rosary necklace, also mentioned to the manager that he’d been arrested for burglary in Georgia. The same night he was hired, the man went to the counter in the lobby and asked to speak to the manager on the phone. He demanded more money. “The manager told him no, and the suspect hung up on him,” Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a news release. “After the

The massive amounts of student data collected and stored by Gwinnett County Public Schools is in the middle of a transition to a new system. And district leaders are well aware of the colossal size of the situation. The move began in the spring of 2015 with online registration to improve security of the information held by the district, said Steve Flynt, associate superintendent of School Improvement and Operations. This summer, the next phase moved elementary school information into the Synergy Student Information System and gradebook. Middle and high school information is scheduled for next summer. Among the highlights for middle and high school features are pathway completer tracking for the high schools with
