A community in mourning

Dacula faces loss of three students in span of two weeks By Joshua sharpe joshua.sharpe@gwinnettdailypost.com

DACULA — Many kids here wore no costumes on Halloween. They wore bare faces, except the faces were often longer than usual, more pained, with tears threatening to traverse the cheeks, with sorrow the color of aged rum coming into the eyes. At the football game Saturday night, when the MORE ONLINE Falcons Visit gwinnettdailypost.com stormed for a photo gallery. Barron Field, bursting paper banners, the students in the crowd wore brown. They needed no costumes this year — They were simply the people who loved Jared and Jaison Brown. The family name of the boys, 17 and 15 respectively, was the inspiration for the show of brown in the stands. The Browns’ deaths, in the wake of a Friday morning car accident, were the source of the pain for these Dacula High students. The loss of the two well-liked soccer players should be more than enough for such children to have to handle. But the brothers are only the latest Dacula High students to die. Last week, a girl who reportedly deliberately harmed herself in the school’s gym died. Compounded, the pain is hard to take for many in this tight-knit community. “If one falls, we all fall,” said Lonnie Cottrell, a former teammate of the brothers on the soccer team. “It’s been a hard, tough week, but we don’t forget the names of the ones we lost.” Indeed, they don’t.
