Dacula running game grinds down Broncos By David Friedlander david.friedlander@ gwinnettdailypost.com
DACULA — There were times that both Dacula and Brookwood did a pretty good job of establishing what they wanted to do during their important Region 8-AAAAAA game. But the host Falcons’ ground game really made its mark in the second half of Dacula’s 38-21 victory Friday night at Barron Stadium. Jakob Brashear and Ty Harris combined for 313 yards on the ground, including 175 in the final 24 minutes, as the Falcons (5-2, 4-1) pulled away for a key win that puts them back in solid position for one of the region’s state playoff berths.
“I’m just really proud of their effort,” Dacula coach Tommy Jones said of his team. “I really challenged our offensive front to come
off the football and stay on blocks. I thought our running backs did a great job of running with some passion and just kind of refusing to
go down.” Leading just 14-7 at the half, Dacula gained control of the game over the first sevenplus minutes of the third quarter, including twice taking advantage of a short field during the opening minutes of the frame. Shamar Esson’s 44-yard punt return set the Falcons up at the Brookwood 30yard line, and even a false start penalty couldn’t slow them down, as Brashear powered through the Broncos’ defense for a 23-yard score on the third play of the possession to push the lead to 21-7 with 8:51 left in the quarter. “We just kept to it,” said Harris, who finished the night See DACULA, Page 7A
