HOSCHTON — Mill Creek couldn’t solve Norcross for years. The Blue Devils racked up eight straight wins from 2006 to 2013, averaging 36.4 against the Hawks in the last five victories of that stretch. Those games are distant memories now. Mill Creek blanked Norcross for the second straight year Friday night, using the running of Joe Thomas and a stout defense for a 24-0 victory on the heels of last year’s 30-0 win. Most importantly, it kept the Hawks unbeaten and set up a winner-take-all game next Friday against Peachtree Ridge for the Region 7-AAAAAA championship. Thomas pounded out 179 yards and two touchdowns on
30 carries, but the story was another dominating defensive effort by Mill Creek, which racked up nine sacks in its second consecutive shutout of Norcross and fifth shutout in nine games this season. “It really shows the growth in our program,” said Mill
Creek defensive end Tyler Vernon, who had four sacks to go with three from fellow defensive end Peyton Moore. “Before last year, we hadn’t beat them once. Now we’ve beaten them twice in a row, both shutouts. It just shows the growth in the program
and shows Coach (Shannon) Jarvis is doing a great job.” It wasn’t the cleanest offensive performance by Mill Creek (9-0, 6-0 region), but it didn’t take much to back up the defense. It held Norcross 25 rushing yards and 32 passing yards. The Blue Devils crossed midfield just once, reaching the Mill Creek 46-yard line early in the second quarter. It lasted just one play — an Aaron Anderson sack sent Norcross (7-2, 4-2) back into its own territory. Mill Creek set the tone defensively from the start, limiting Norcross minus-12 yards on its first three possessions. “Across the board our, defense played phenomenal,” Jarvis said. “They’re going to have to, moving forward, See DEFENSE, Page 7A
