BUFORD — Buford High School’s 2015 homecoming queen got to trade her hospital gown for a sparkling blue sequined one. Seventeen-year-old senior Rucio Turcios has spent her final year of high school fighting Ewing sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Despite going through chemotherapy and making frequent hospital visits, Turcios is in class every day she is physically able to attend. “I told her a couple weeks ago how inspirational she is to me,” Buford High Principal Banks Bitterman said. “She was in the hospital (Thursday)

and she’ll be on the field (Friday). She’s pretty amazing.” Turcios has been going to Buford City Schools since she was in kindergarten. Her peers nominated her for homecoming court earlier this year, and Friday she was selected as homecoming queen. She was speechless immediately after recieving her crown, flowers and sash, escorted by her father, Ricardo Ramirez. “I don’t know what to say,” she said. “It feels amazing that everyone voted for me.” As she walked off the field, Buford High School senior Rucio Turcios stands on the field

On Monday, Fernando Perez-Guzman, a 42-year-old with a Georgia Bulldog tattooed on his bicep and the crucifixion on his back, summoned Lawrenceville police to his apartment. With his pastor at his side, he told an officer that his wife, Fernando Perez-Guzman Yamilet Rodriguez, had left home after a late-night argument five days earlier and hadn’t been home since. Police believe PerezGuzman was lying. According to a warrant for his arrest released Friday, the Yamilet husband now has said Rodriguez the wife, 28, a mother of two with flowing black hair and arched eyebrows, died from an accidental fall down the stairs while the two were in a tiff. “During the altercation, the defendant stated that he grabbed the victim as she was attempting to leave their apartment and go down the stairs,” the warrant says. “The defendant concealed the death and transported the victim’s lifeless body to a wooded area behind the defendant’s work.” Asked how investigators believe Rodriguez died, Capt. Jeff Smith of the Lawrenceville Police Department declined to go into detail Friday. “All I can say is that we are looking at all of his statements and any inconsistencies that may be therein,” he said. “As far as the manner of death, we have no information to release at this time.” True or not, the story Perez-Guzman is telling according to the warrant now stands in stark contrast to the one he reportedly told Monday. That night, he said he had no idea where his wife went, according to a police report detailing his statement. “He stated that when she left she

was aiming to beat the Guinness World Record for largest ice cream party and the Grammy-winning singer lent a hand by counting down to the first bite.

After opening acts Pilot, Presley Sullivan and the Gasoline Brothers entertained the crowd, volunteers passed out around 1,500 servings of ice cream to concertgoers. The ice cream — offered in chocolate mousse, Madagascar vanilla and strawberries and cream — was provided by Daddy

O’Brien’s Irish Ice Cream Pub. The crisp autumn weather didn’t deter the crowd of concertgoers — or Tritt, who enjoyed the cherry amaretto — from eating the cold treat. After a short break, Tritt came back onto stage and See TRITT, Page 8A
