For the third time in less than three weeks, a driver fled the scene after killing a pedestrian in Gwinnett County, police said Tuesday. The latest fugitive drives a maroon Honda and hasn’t been found since hitting 22-year-old Lawrenceville resident Dante Wilson on Boggs Road outside Duluth on Monday night, said Cpl. Michele Pihera, spokeswoman for the county police department. Wilson was attempting to cross the road from Autumn Vista apartments to the Magnolia Pointe apartment complex at about 9:45 p.m. The Honda — model unknown — was traveling on the road toward Interstate 85. A black Buick and silver Mercedes were driving in the same direction when the Honda’s side mirror struck the victim. He fell. “The driver of the black Buick struck

NORCROSS — Inside a pre-first grade classroom at Greater Atlanta Christian on Tuesday morning, the resiliency of the American military was on the mind of Nolan Crisp. “Soldiers sometimes miss their families because it’s a long time that they’re going to be in the Army,” he said. “It’s just going to be a long time. They wouldn’t say, ‘I quit this Army.’ They would just keep going and keep going, and they would always protect us.” With that message in mind, Nolan joined his classmates and students across the GAC campus this week in writing letters to soldiers in time to be delivered during the upcoming holiday season. For the fourth year, the school is partnering with The Bert Show’s The Big Thank You campaign to send a “heartfelt, handwritten original” letter by Thanksgiving to every soldier who is deployed overseas.

LAWRENCEVILLE — A man who gunned down his brother-in-law in front of several witnesses off Old Norcross Road may not be charged, Gwinnett County police said Tuesday. The lead investigator believes Jerry Hayes, 46, of Loganville was acting in self-defense when he shot Brian E. Davis, 48, at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday outside Lawrenceville, said Cpl. Michele Pihera, spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Police Department. Hayes arrived at 369 Freeport Drive, a brick duplex with pumpkins out for Halloween in a subdivision near Averitt

this week, and the collection is expected to be picked up on Wednesday to start the distribution process. “We want to focus on making their day a brighter happier day,” pre-first grade teacher Denise Austin said. “Because they’re away from
their families and a long way from home perhaps. So what can we do to make their heart feel happy?” The military connection was personal for Juan Boyd, a pre-first grade student, See MAIL, Page 10A
