Caring for the Rehabilitation Needs of Seniors Sylvan Grove Hospital As we age, our bodies begin to change. Things that used to be easy become more difficult and we might experience problems remembering facts and processing complex data as well as physical changes in how we move and our activity levels.

It seems that the older we get, the more these changes affect our lives.

Doctors and nurses often notice that older patients who were in the hospital for an acute illness, accident or surgery begin to lose some of their ability to function independently. One way to combat this decline is for hospital staff to look at the total-care picture rather than focus just on the illness that led to the hospital stay. Many times your physician or case manager may recommend an extended care program following hospitalization designed to help you further heal, gain strength and then return home. Examples of extended care programs could be traditional Nursing Homes, Acute Rehabilitation Programs or Swing Bed Rehabilitation Programs.

A swing bed program is often also referred to as sub acute rehabilitation. The Swing Bed Program at Sylvan Grove Hospital in Jackson, Georgia provides extended care that allows a patient to move from a level of “acute care” to receiving “skilled rehabilitation” but still remaining in a hospital setting. This is ideal for a patient that no longer requires an acute hospital setting, but is not yet able to care for them self at home. Many seniors benefit from such a setting, which would provide them the care they need to continue to heal, and also rehabilitation they can tolerate.

How might you know if the Sylvan Grove’s Swing Bed Rehabilitation Program is right for you?

This scenario works well if you are recovering from joint replacement or other types of surgery; or from a stroke, cardiac or respiratory illness; or if you have wounds that need longer-term antibiotic therapy and can’t be treated at home or in an outpatient setting.

Sylvan Grove’s program is tailored to each patient’s needs; and goals are set with the patient and their family. The program uses a team of health care professionals from a number of disciplines including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, as well as physical, occupational and speech therapists; to review and monitor each patient’s progress, problems and needs.

The team looks to see what can be done to improve the patient’s overall health status and ability to perform daily tasks. For instance, the patient may have been admitted following pneumonia, but also has problems walking and grasping objects. The patient would work with occupational and physical therapists to address these problems while treatment continues to address respiratory issues.

The Swing Bed unit itself is designed to encourage patients to socialize and remain as active as possible. The goal is for the patient to regain their health, but also

improve their functional abilities, and maintain their ability to live independently.

Some of the special features of sylvan Grove Hospital’s Swingbed Rehabilitation Program include: Care which can include physical, occupational and speech therapy, respiratory therapy, IV therapy or other skilled nursing care, Pain management.

Care overseen by staff physicians – your physician will meet with you and family members within 24 hours of your arrival to discuss your care and goals. How to Manage Medications at Home

Turn on the television and you’re likely to be inundated with commercials for the latest prescription medications that should be discussed with a doctor. Individuals who take multiple medications may find it difficult to manage them all.

The challenge of managing medications can be difficult for anyone but particularly for seniors. Some organizational strategies and a little help from others may be the keys to getting meds straight.

First and foremost, it’s important that doctors and pharmacists know of all the medications that are being taken. It’s a good idea to use one pharmacy to fill prescriptions. This way it will have a record of medication use and can alert to drug interactions that may be dangerous, which could otherwise go undetected. And remember, over-thecounter supplements, vitamins and medicines count, too. They should be mentioned at the doctor’s office or, at the very least, when getting a new prescription filled at the pharmacy. Herbal remedies and other

items -- even foods -- can interact with certain drugs. For example, it’s best to avoid grapefruit juice while taking many of the cholesterol-lowering statins available.

Purchasing a medication organizer can be the next step to getting drugs in check. Seniors may want to enlist the help of a family member to sort through pills at the beginning of each week and place the right pills in each compartment.

Knowing which days to take each medication is sometimes not enough. Certain medications must be taken at different intervals each day, often inviting confusion.

A chart listing the times of each medication posted next to where the prescriptions are kept can help.

A watch with a timer or an alarm clock can be programmed to chime as a reminder. There are a number of options available to help make organizing care a little easier. Safety should be the top priority when there are many different medications that need to be taken.

How to Address Varicose Veins Metro Creative

Men and women alike suffer from varicose veins, which can be a cosmetic nuisance or a symptom of a serious medical condition. New varicose vein treatments are enabling individuals to live happier lives.

Varicose veins are enlarged, gnarled veins that can resemble the twisted roots of a tree. They develop when the one-way valves in veins that carry blood to the heart are faulty. Blood backs up in the veins as a result, and stretches the vein.

According to experts from Meridian Health, varicose veins are very common and affect half of all Americans ages 50 and older.

But they’re not just a concern for seniors. Anyone can develop varicose veins, but women are at a greater risk than men.

Varicose veins typically do not have any symptoms, except for the visual presence of deep blue or purple, bulging veins that

largely occur on the legs and feet. However, aches in the legs, heavy feeling, itching around veins, or throbbing may also occur. Similar to varicose veins are spider veins, which are smaller and closer to the skin surface.

Pregnancy, age and stretching of the veins are contributors to varicose veins. Being overweight or standing for long durations of time are other contributors, as is wearing restrictive clothing.

There are a number of treatments that have been developed for varicose veins. During sclerotherapy, a solution is injected into a small or medium-sized vein to scar it and close it up.

Eventually the vein will shrivel and fade. A similar procedure is done with lasers to shrink the vein without the need for needles or surgery. Catheter procedures use a heated tube inserted into the vein to collapse the vein and seal it shut. Vein

stripping involves removing large veins through several small incisions. It is usually an outpatient procedure but will require a surgery.

In most cases, blood will naturally reroute to other veins in the legs after one of these procedures. Much of the blood flow in the legs is carried out by deeper veins. Individuals who undergo these procedures can usually walk directly after the surgery and full recovery is only a matter of a couple of weeks or more.

Feeling good about oneself involves being happy about what is on the inside and outside. Hiding legs and feet due to varicose veins can be embarrassing and uncomfortable, especially as the weather warms. Talk to a doctor about a recommendation to a vascular surgeon who can offer treatments for varicose veins.

The Grieving Process: Learning to Accept

By Fred Whitehurst, Bereavement Services Manager VITAS Innovative Hospice Care® of Atlanta Grief. It can stop people in their tracks. Sorrow comes because people love. It’s that simple. But, it is our ability to love that also allows us to heal from the despair of grief.

Often following the loss of a loved one, we

don’t know where to turn and we feel like our world has been turned upside down. The changes can feel overwhelming. Death can shake confidence in surviving family members, and in the case of a spouse, force him or her to establish an identity as a single person again. In addition, he or she must learn to take on tasks that the spouse used to perform, such as

paying bills or making decisions about the children or care of the home.

Grief is unique to each person and it can involve hard work over a period of months or years. When the loss sinks in, it is typical to feel profound loneliness and sadness.

Bereaved people also can feel guilt or anger following the death of a loved one. Sometimes they feel embarrassed about the emotions they have, and sometimes they feel like they “should be feeling better by now.” But embracing the reality of life after the death of a loved one doesn’t happen quickly or easily.

It can help to understand that these feelings are a part of the normal grieving process. Over time, with understanding and help, there can be a growing acceptance and a reawakening of energy and hope.

Many are able to define what is mean-

ingful to them and find confidence in acquiring skills previously performed by their loved ones. Former relationships are restored, and new ones form during this time. Memories can be cherished, not lamented.

It is important to remember that all these feelings are a part of the mourning process and are normal.

Even though they are painful to experience, they need to be expressed in order to move forward in life.

The grieving process allows people to grow in ways they may not have imagined.

Support groups can provide information and guidance to help bereaved people find their way through these transitions. They also provide a safe place to share feelings with others who have experienced a similar loss. Connecting with others can help to ease the pain of loss and comforting companionship can make the journey through grief a bit easier to bear.

Adult Health and Day Care Centers According to the National Adult Day Services Assoc. (NADSA) there is a growing need for adult day services to the meet the mushrooming demand for home and community based services in a rapidly escalating elder population.

The association state that “studies have shown that seniors who are frequently stimulated (mentally, emotionally and socially) are more likely to retain their physical health and mental wellbeing, if enrolled into an adult day care facility that ensures participants who are challenged in the above mentioned areas remains actively engaged”.

Jonesboro Adult Health & Day Support Center (JAHD Support Center) provides a combination of social and healthcare services with the added services of respite care for the participants and participant’s caregivers.

JAHD support center is a community-based comprehensive adult day health program that provides: Social Activities, Healthcare Services, Respite Care Services, Rehabilitation Services and MRDD Services.

The criterion for enrollment in the JAHD support center program are the participants need to be mobile, with possible assistance of a cane, walker or wheelchair, and in most cased, they may or may not be continent.

While many people consider home a safe haven, allergy sufferers might find their homes are actually havens for a host of harmful allergens. Even those who suffer hay fever and other outdoor allergies might find their home’s interior is actually making their condition worse. Shedding Some Light on Sun Protection SPF. UVA. UVB. What does it all mean?!

Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays can sometimes feel like a game of Scrabble. But HellaWella’s here to help you make sense of it all.

And, as it turns out, so is the Food and Drug Administration, which in mid-June announced that it’s implementing new measures to help clarify the labeling and effectiveness of sunscreen products.

So let’s decipher the alphabet soup: SPF = Sun Protection Factor. Your sun protection products’ SPF is what tells you how long you can go before having to reapply.

“You’re going to look for a product that has a higher SPF level, which is going to give your body the full coverage and sun protection that it needs,” Aveeno representative Meghan Kelly told HellaWella at the Skin Cancer Foundation’s 2011 Sun Safety Expo. “I recommend our new Aveeno mineral block lotion. It comes with an SPF of 30 for adults and it’s not going to irritate your skin. Reapply every three to five hours and put on 1 oz. for every application.”

Though there are products out there with SPF claims much higher than 50, according to the FDA, there has not been adequate data confirming that products with SPF values of more than 50 provide additional protection.

Therefore, part of the newly implemented FDA regulations will enforce that any products with those higher SPF claims will be labeled simply as “SPF 50+.”

UVA and UVB = ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays. UVB rays are what cause that annoying and painful sunburn, while UVA rays contribute to sunburn, skin cancer and premature skin aging.

“I always look for the UVA and the UVB in [my sun protection products] and make sure it’s 99% effective, because you don’t want any of those extra rays getting into your skin,” Rampone said. So now that you know what to look out for, what are you going to do about it?

Millions of people routinely take prescription medications or make dietary changes, such as eliminating salt from their diets, in an effort to lower blood pressure. However, for those who are interested in making some easy lifestyle changes that can result in modest reductions in blood pressure, listening to music or laughing more may do the trick. In a Japanese study presented in May at an American Heart Association meeting, researchers explained that people who took part in bimonthly group sessions built around music or laughter lowered their systolic blood pressure (the top number in the reading, which measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats) by an average of five to six points after three months. In con-

trast, the average blood-pressure reading in a control group that received neither therapy didn’t move. According to experts, this decline in pressure is the equivalent of what someone could expect from adopting a low-salt diet or losing 10 pounds. The American Heart Association recommends that healthy blood pressure should be less than 120 for systolic and less than 80 for diastolic.

The Talents of Therapy Dogs Metro Creative

Many people think of therapy dogs as guide dogs leading the blind, or dogs sitting with seniors at an assisted living facility. While therapy dogs are responsible for these jobs, they do so much more -- including acting as a trusted companion for someone diagnosed with cancer.

Although many therapy dogs are specially trained in their roles, just about any well-mannered dog can serve in a therapeutic capacity.

People may be surprised at all the many assistance roles dogs can play.

• Help children read: Dogs are not judgmental and offer no criticism, which makes them prime helpers for children who need help learning to read or who have stage fright. Children can read stories to dogs who listen quietly and build up their confidence levels. Some schools and libraries even institute

programs where dogs are invited as the audience to student readers.

• Seizure alert: Some dogs are trained to alert epileptics and those with seizure disorders to an upcoming episode, although this method of detection is not always foolproof.

• Cancer therapy: Getting diagnosed with cancer can be a stressful event. Going through chemotherapy and radiation can take its toll on the body. Cancer patients often need all of the love and affection they can get or sometimes just a quiet companion. In a program like Pets for Pals, therapy dogs sit with cancer patients, often sensing what ill people need. Dogs have the innate ability to love unconditionally. Having a dog around gives patients a

different topic of conversation other than their health and treatment. Petting a dog has been known to lower blood pressure and reduce stress as well.

• Helping hands: Individuals who are handicapped may rely on dogs to do tasks around the house, from turning on lights to grabbing remote controls. Some dogs help companions move around a space by offering stability and a handhold.

• Security: Dogs have long been used as security guards. But even if a dog isn’t a trained guard, he or she can alert if something is amiss in the house or if someone is at the door or outside of the home. Individuals who live alone can benefit from the companionship and level of security that dogs provide.

Many therapy and service dogs start their lives as stray dogs or shel-

ter dogs. Some training facilities actually seek out calm, well-mannered shelter dogs and give them a new lease on life as a person’s helper or companion.
