Georgia Columnist and Author, Loran Smith, speaks at Albany Sports Hall of Fame banquet Loran Smith is a native of Wrightsville, GA and a graduate of the University of Georgia where he captained the 1960 Bulldog track team. He was named MVP his senior year. While on campus, he was sports editor and circulation manager of the Red and Black and was also sports editor of the Athens Banner Herald while earning a degree in Journalism.

At Georgia, he has worked as Assistant Sports Information Director, Business Manager of Athletics, and Executive Director of the Georgia Bulldog Club. He originated Georgia’s pre-game Tailgate Show and the coaches locker room show.

He was Georgia’s first sideline announcer and originated the position. His syndicated weekly radio show, “Sports Converstations,” is heard on over 40 stations in Georgia.

He has authored or co-authored sev-

eral books including: Glory Glory (with Lewis Grizzard), the story of Georgia’s 1980 National Championship season.

Albany Sports Hall of Fame mission for scholarships and inductions In 1989, Albany residents Pete Cox and Cleve Wester envisioned the Albany Sports Hall of Fame – an avenue through which recognition could be given to deserving athletes, and scholarships could be awarded to exceptionally wellrounded high school graduates.

Albany has had so many nationally prominent athletes, such as Ray Knight, Stanley Floyd and Lionel James, that the time had come to give recognition where recognition was due.

Over the past 25 years, this vision has become a reality. The Albany Sports Hall of Fame has seen tremendous success, and is sure to continue shedding light on some of Albany’s most qualified athletes

and students.

“The people of Albany have backed the Albany Sports Hall of Fame 100 percent,” says Pete Cox, an original and current member of the Sports Hall of Fame.

Cox is also a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. “The objectives behind the Albany Sports Hall of Fame were to honor Albany’s athletes and to honor an athlete from each high school each year. Being named ‘Albany Sports Hall of Fame Athlete of the Year’ is an honor that each recipient can take with him for the rest of his life.”

To be chosen as an inductee to the Albany Sports Hall of Fame, one must first be nominated.

The candidate’s application is reviewed by the Albany Sports Hall of Fame selection committee with discriminating judgement, looking at the candidate’s high school participation (50 percent), his college participation (25 percent), and his overall character and willingness to further athletics in the Albany community (25 percent).

Raising money for scholarships is a priority for the Albany Sports Hall of Fame.

Knight, Oates and James Head the Initial Inductees for Albany Sports Hall of Fame The Most Valuable Player of the 1986 World Series, the starting center for the 1987 Super Bowl champion and the holder of the NFL record for all purpose yards in a single season head a list of 15 who will be the first inductees into the Albany Sports Hall of Fame.

Ray Knight, a Dougherty High graduate, led the New York Mets to victory over the Boston Red Sox in a dramatic seven game series last October and brought national acclaim to Albany when he was named the Series MVP. Bart Oates, in Albany. High graduate, after playing in the only two USFL championship games as a member of the Philadelphia, (later Baltimore) Stars, shifted to the NFL and quickly became the anchor of the offensive line of the New York Giants, who clobbered the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI this past January.

Lionel James, a Dougherty High graduate, totaled 2,535 yards in 1985 with the San Diego Chargers to break the single season record for all purpose yardage set by Terry Metcalf of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1975.

These three are the only active players among the 15 picked by the 10 man Selection Committee appointed by the Board of the Albany Sports Hall of

Fame. They, eight former standouts and four who will be inducted posthumously are to be enshrined at a banquet Thursday, May 14 at the Alrany James H. Gray Sr. Civic Center. Pat Dye, Auburn University athletic director and head football coach, will be the featured speaker for the banquet.

The inactive to be honored include Pete Cox, who lettered in five sports at Albany High and who was the Georgia State Amateur golf champion in 1964; Phillip Clark, a multi letter athlete at Albany High who went on to a pro career as a pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals organization; Harley Bowers, Sports Editor of The Albany Herald from 1948 1958 and now the Executive Sports Editor of the Macon Telegraph; Alice Coachman Davis, a basketball and track star at Albany State College who won a gold medal in the high ump in the 1948 Summer Olympics; Cleve Wester, a 1954 Albany High graduate who was the Most Valuable Player on Auburn University's 1957 national championship football team; John Duke, a 1947 Albany High graduate who played end for the University of Georgia from 1948 1950; Walter Burt Jr., a Class B state champion tennis player for Albany High and later the No. 1 player for Baylor School for Boys in Chattanooga, Tenn. in the late 1930's; and Weyman Sellars a 1944 Albany High graduate and a defensive end for the

The deceased who will be honored include Jack "the Ripper" Roberts, fullback at the University of Georgia from 1929 31; Harold E. 2011 Albany Sports Hall of Fame Inductees Missie Milton Brock participated in many athletic activities at Albany High School between 1975 and 1978. She lettered in basketball and was involved in cheerleading and tennis while attending. She was a member of the All Region Basketball Team and the All Tournament Team. While in high school, Missie was also co-captain of the cheerleaders.

From 1978 to 1982 she attended Valdosta State College where she was involved with both basketball and softball.

She played on the Lady Blazer basketball team for four years and achieved many accomplishments

and awards.

While playing basketball at Valdosta State, she gained the honor of "Best Free Throw Percentage," and was awarded the Carol Chason Award, the Best Offensive Player Award, and the Miss Lady Blazer Award. For two of the four years at Valdosta State, Missie also played Lady Blazer softball.

Upon graduating college, Missie began working at Thomasville High School as the Assistant Coach for varsity basketball. While at Thomasville High, she was also a teacher for the mildly intellectually disabled.

In 1983, Missie began working at

Colquitt County High School.

Here she took on many roles including Assistant Girls Basketball Coach, Head Softball Coach, Varsity Cheerleading Coach, and Gymnastics Coach.

Under Missie's guidance, the varsity cheerleaders won the 1985 Camp Award for Best Squad. As head softball coach, Missie was awarded the 1987 Region 1-AAAA Coach of the Year. In addition to all of her coaching responsibilities, Missie was also a teacher for various special education classes and a system coordinator for special education for three years.

2011 Albany Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

Gary Lee was born February 12, 1965 in Warner Robins, Georgia. He attended high school at Westover High School in Albany, Georgia. During Gary's attendance at Westover High, he participated in football. As a football player, he led his region in scoring and was an all-region selection. He was also MVP in region 1-AAAA. During his high school football career, Gary rushed for 823 yards and made 10 touchdowns on 107 carries. He led the region with 14 kickoff returns for 346 yards and punted five times for a 45.6 yard average.

Gary also lettered three years in basketball and two years in track.

Gary Lee was awarded two sports scholarhships, one for football and one for track and field, to attend Georgia Tech. He was recruited as a wide-receiver by Georgia Tech. While attending Georgia Tech, Gary had the best yards-per-catch

average in Tech history for a season and career. As a receiver, he had 67 career receptions for a total of 1299 yards. As a kickoff return specialist, he had 42 returns for a total of 874 yards and two touchdowns.

In 1981, Gary Lee was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the NFL Drafts. He played for two years as a kick-off return specialist and receiver.

He also returned 50 kick-offs for an average of 21.5 yards and had 41 receptions for a 13.1 yard average and one touchdown.

In addition to being a National Football League wide receiver, Gary is also a successful businessman and father of three children. He is best known for his 95-yard, game-winning kick-off return for a touchdown against rival Georgia 17 years ago. Currently, Gary Lee is the Executive Director of Warner Robin's Redevelopment Agency.

Ulysses Wilson An Advertising Supplement to

2011 Albany Sports Hall of Fame Inductees Ulysses Wilson attended high school at Monroe High School from 1965 to 1967.

While there he played baseball as both shortstop and second base. He lead the team in batting average (.580), stolen bases , and RBI's. Ulysses lead Monroe High School to its only state baseball championship in 1967. He was scouted by the Boston Red Sox Organization during his senior year.

In 1967, Ulysses went on to attend Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida. Here he also took the positions of short stop and second base on the baseball team. During his college career, Ulysses lead the team in batting average for two years (.360 Sophomore year and .380 Junior year) and also lead in stolen bases during these same two years. He was selected to play in the College All-Star game in Columbia, South America along side future New York Yankee star Bucky Dent.

In 1970, Ulysses was drafted in the Fourth

Round and signed a professional baseball contract with the San Diego Padres Organization. He was the first African American signed to any professional sport's contract from Albany, Georgia. In 1970, he began he began his career as a professional short stop with the Lodi Padres in the Rookie A Northwestern League under manager George Freeze. During this time, he lead the team in runs scored, stolen bases, and batting average (.287). In 1971, Ulysses played for the Alexandria Aces in the AA League under manager Duke Snyder, and he lead the team in stolen bases and batting average (.280). He also lead his team to the playoffs. In 1972 he continued on to the AAA League playing for the Hawaii Padres under manager Rocky Bridges. He lead this team in runs scored and batting average (.292). From 1972 to 1973, Ulysses was invited to Major League Spring Training where he played against Hall of Fame members Willie Mayes, Ernie

Mark Williams 2011 Albany Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

Mark Williams began his sports career at Westover High School in Albany, Georgia. From 1991 to 1995, he participated in football, baseball, and track and field. In 1994, he was a member of the State Track Champions and a member of the Albany Herald's "Dirty Dozen." Mark was voted Most Athletic his senior year.

Williams went on to play football at Georgia Southern University.

While there he was a three-year consensus All-American performer who finished his Georgia Southern career with 13 separate national honors. He started 50 of 51 career games and was a two-year recipient of the Jacob's Blocking Award, which is presented annually to the top offensive lineman in the Southern Conference.

As the Eagles' starting right guard, he led Georgia Southern to a 41-13 mark during four letter-winning seasons. Williams played an even greater role in GSU's 37-6 (.860) ledger as a sophomore, junior, and senior, which included three straight SoCon titles, two NCAA Division 1-AA National Championship (1999).

Williams perhaps enjoyed his greatest season in 1999, creating openings in the offensive line which translated into a number one national statistical rank in scoring offense, total offense, and rushing offense. Payton Award after rushing for 1,807 regular season yards.

This year’s two scholarship recipients are Chartabious Thomas of Monroe High School and Gianna Palazzolo of Westover High School.

Each of Albany’s seven high schools has one “Athlete of the Year,” chosen by the coaches of the schools. This award is bestowed on qualified athletes and is recognized at the annual Sports Hall of Fame Banquet. The seven recipients for 2010 include: Jonta Jones from Westover High school, Jarvis Hicks from Albany High School, Arabian Williams from Dougherty High School, Lakeisha Monique Jackson from Monroe High, Hannah Hughes from Byne Christian School, Tony Zenon from Deerfield Windsor School and

fifty lifters of the millennium by Powerlifting USA. That same year Dr. Biasiotto became the oldest man to win the national and world open bodybuilding championships. His best lifts at a body weight of 132 pounds include a bench press of 319 pounds and a deadlift of 551 pounds. In 1988, Dr. Biasiotto shocked he sports world by squatting an incredible 603 pounds at a body weight of 130 pounds. That lift, which exceeded the previous ADFPA world record by over 80 pounds, is considered one of the most prolific feats of strength in the history of the sport of powerlifting.

Moreover, Dr. Biasiotto is the founder of Dr. Judd's Love Foundation, a corporation that is designed to help the disabled and impoverished.

The 15 were chosen from approximately 200 nominations, Pete Cox, President of the 10 man Board of Directors for the newly-formed Albany Sports Hall of Fame said.

Cox and Wester are the only two members of the Board who were chosen by the Selection Committee. Other Board members are Jimmy Gray Jr. (vice president". Paul B. Robertson (secretary), Richard Carson (treasurer), Joe James, Morgan Murphy, Jamil Saba, Jessie Walters and Billy Swilley.

Marvin Lorig chaired the Selection Committee, which included R.H. "Sonny" Warren III, Bufford Collins, Pat

Field, Dermot "Bud" Shemwell, Jerry Gerst, James Griffin, Lamar Clifton, Ralph Satterfield and Brandon "Bugger" Seely.

The Committee used as criteria for its selection 50 percent high school achievement, 30 percent achievement beyond high school and 20 percent community contribution.

Tickets for the banquet will go on sale next week. Tickets can be purchased from any board member or at the Albany Chamber of Commerce. Admission to the banquet induction ceremonies will be $10 per person. The ticket price includes a barbeque buffet that will begin at 7:30 p.m., following a 6:30 cocktail hour.

Gray said the Committee did not solicit nominations, but was given a maximum of 15 it could induct this year. "Ten will be added next year and no more than five each year after that," Gray said.

"Nominations will be thrown open every year."

"The Selection Committee did a good job," Cox said. "It worked nearly three months in narrowing the nominations to the eventual 15 inductees."

The Selection Process The Selection Committee is divided into two groups.

The first group reviewed all of the applications and narrowed the list to their top ten choices. The second group reviewed the top ten, and the final five nominees were chosen.

"We think they are very valid criteria, and we intend to stick with them," Gray said.

"The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame uses the same type of criteria," Cox, who is on the Board of the State Hall, said. The major difference, he said, is the emphasis the Albany Committee placed on local athletic achievement. , "I think the Selection Committee really dedicated itself," Gray said. "The members took their task seriously. Their meeting were not short meetings by any means. Marvin Lorig did an excellent job chairing the Committee."

Cox said the committee represented a diversity of ages, but was designed to include "people who have been in Albany a long time and who know the athletes."

The Hall of Fame will be housed in the Civic Center. Portraits of the members will be hung there.

Gray said he hoped the Hall of Fame, a non profit organization, would in the near future, be able to award a scholarship each to Albany Junior College and to Albany State College.

"The scholarships won't be Based on athletic achievement," Gray said. "They will go to two needy applicants."

Gray said all of the money realized from the banquet will be "plowed back into the community."

The Albany Sports Hall of Fame will also honor the Dougherty County Athlete of the Year at the banquet. The four public and two private high schools were each asked to nominate its athlete of the year. Selected by the schools were Darin Erickson, Albany High; Teresa Brown, Deerfield Windsor School; Corey Smith, Dougherty High; Cheryl Cheeks, Monroe High; Curtis Kimbrell, Riverview Academy; and Patrick Davis, Westover High.

A selection committee appointed by the Board will choose from these six,, Gray said, and the Dougherty County Athlete of the Year will be announced at the banquet.

Sports Hall of Fame To Honor Local Stars

by Paul McCorvey In Merideth Wilsons's The Music Man, Professor Harold Hill Promised the citizens of the ficticious town of River City, Iowa that "as sure as God made green apples" the town would have a boys band and "that band's going to be in uniform."

With the same kind of determination, the newly formed board of the Albany Sports Hall of Fame is going to see that athletes, coaches and those who have been of service to sports locally will be given their due recognition, and that those honored are given a place for posterity.

We have had so many good athletes here, it is time some of them got recognized, "board president Pete Cox said."

Cox, a five-letter athlete at Albany High in the early 1950's and a Georgia state amateur golf champion in 1963, said the genesis for a local sports hall of fame came from discussions he had this past April with Cleve Wester, a 1954 Albany High graduate who went on to earn All Southeastern Conference honors on Auburn University's 1957 national championship team.

"We talked about how well the idea had been carried through in cities like Savannah and Valdosta," Cox said. "They have excellent Halls of Fame. So we formed a board from interested citizens and got a state charter."

James H. Gray Jr. who lettered in football and baseball for Albany High in the early 1960's, is vice president of the board. Paul B. Robertson, retired Superintendent of Dougherty County Schools and a former assistant football coach at Albany High, is secretary for the board. Richard Carson is its treasurer.

Other board members are Wester, Morgan Murphy, Jamil Saba, Jay Walters, Billy Swilley and Joe James.

The board has appointed a nominating and selection committee, Gray said, to pick the first 15 inductees. Marvin Lorig chairs the committee, which includes R.H. Warren III. Buford Collins, Pat Field, Bud Shemwell, Jerry Gerst, James Griffin, Lamar Clifton, Ralph Satterfield and Brandon Seely.

Gray Emphasized that athletes of all sports would be given equal consideration by the committee. "This is just not for football players," he said.

Cox said the committee will select 15 people for the initial induction. Ten more inductees will be added in 1988, he said, and four more each year thereafter.

Tentative plans are for the first induction banquet to be held in the spring of 1987.

Gray said the committee is culling more than 100 nominations for the Hall's first members. He said the criteria the committee would follow in its selections required that an athlete either have attended high school in Albany or have played college or pro ball locally and made residency in Albany for seven years thereafter. The criteria for coaches is seven years of coaching locally.

The committee will weigh nominations according to "50 percent high school career, 30 precent career after high school and 20 percent contributions to the community, "Gray said.

"There are a lot of highly qualified people," he said. "It is going to be tough to crack that top 15."

The board also plans to secure a building in which the accomplishments of the Hall's inductees will be permanently displayed.

"We think a local sports Hall of Fame is a great idea," Cox said, "and one that is long overdue."
