Caring For Those Who Served Their Country

(NAPS)—A program designed to provide the best possible care for veterans also offers rewarding job alternatives for experienced nurses. The VA Travel Nurse Corps Program is a VA-operated internal pool of registered nurses who are available for temporary short-term assignments at VA centers throughout the country. While taking part in the program, VA Travel Nurses are compensated for their time and travel and receive per diem allowances that include lodging, meals and incidentals plus the opportunity to see the country. RNs are compensated for hours worked but do not earn sick or vacation time or retirement programs. “The program offers nurses an opportunity to maintain high standards of patient care, helps decrease turnover of newly recruited nurses and offers alternatives for experienced nurses considering leaving the VA system,” says Program Director Jacqueline Jackson. It is hoped that the program will reduce the use of outside supplemental staffing, improve recruitment of new nurses into the VA system and deliver VA health care in rural or underserved areas. The program also hopes to establish a potential pool of registered nurses for national emergency preparedness efforts. RNs are selected from the VA and the private sector. Nurses new to the VA receive training on the special needs

of veterans, the system’s procedures and policies, as well as medication administration and the VA’s computer system. Nursing can be both challenging and rewarding wherever you work but the VA program offers special rewards. “As I start the IV on an 85-yearold hero, his eyes grow soft as he mentions his tour of service in India and Burma,” said RN Brenda Joyce Gupton. “This veteran carried our colors to another continent for freedom’s sake. It was my privilege to be his nurse.” The program was launched as a joint effort between the VA’s Integrated Service Networks, the VA’s Management Support Office and the VA Office of Nursing Services. “We are committed to making this program a win-win for all involved and to keep VA on the cutting edge of providing the best care possible to our nation’s veterans,” said Jackson. For more information, visit www.travelnurse.va.gov or call (866) 6641030.

Vets Get Free Canes (NAPS)—Every year, in an effort to honor U.S. Military Veterans, a national program gives free folding canes to Veterans who need them. What They Receive The cane is sturdy, functional and stylish. It has an ergonomic soft-grip handle, adjusts for people 5’ to 6’3”, supports up to 250 pounds and automatically unfolds and locks into position for use.

Why They Receive It The program’s aim is to help Veterans stay connected to family, friends and the community. Where To Get It The AMG Medical Inc. canes are available, while supplies last, November 9, 10 and 11, 2011, at all 600 Sam’s Clubs locations nationwide. Club membership is not required, though proof of U.S. military service may be. How To Learn More For additional information about the Hugo Salutes Our Veterans program, visit www.HugoSalutes.com.

Making Veterans Day Even More Meaningful (NAPS)—The Library of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP) is calling on all Americans to make Veterans Day more meaningful for the veterans in their lives by recording their memories of military service. Preserving History Established by the U.S. Congress in 2000, VHP’s mandate is to collect, preserve and make accessible the firsthand recollections of America’s war veterans. Through a network of volunteers from across the country, VHP has collected more than 75,000 stories, of which more than 10,000 have been digitized and made accessible via VHP’s website, www.loc.gov/vets. “Our goal is to help make Veterans Day more meaningful and personal for veterans and their loved ones,” said VHP Director Bob Patrick. “What better way to do that than by recording their war stories and submitting them to the Library of Congress, where they will be preserved for generations to come,” he added. A Free Guide Is Available Straightforward guidelines in VHP’s Field Kit (a how-torecord-a-story booklet) show volunteers how to interview a veteran for 30 minutes or longer while recording the conversation using their own audio- or video-recording equipment. Next, volunteers

may send the original recording, along with VHP’s required forms, to the Library of Congress, where they are added to the Library’s permanent collections. A profile page for each veteran who shares a story with VHP appears on www.loc.gov/vets four to six months from the date VHP receives the collection, and the profile is accessible to researchers, teachers, authors and the general public through VHP’s searchable online database. The project also accepts original photographs, letters, military documents, diaries, journals, two-dimensional artwork and unpublished memoirs. A Meaningful Project National organizations, local groups and individuals, including students in grades 10 and higher, are encouraged to mark the day with this meaningful volunteer project by interviewing veterans within their own families or communities or by collaborating with local veterans service organizations to collect stories. For more information or to request a VHP Field Kit, contact VHP at (888) 371-5848, e-mail vohp@loc.gov or visit www.loc.gov/vets.

Using Technology To Save Lives And Dollars (NAPS)—The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has come up with a surprising way to help keep this country safe—and improve the economy and protect the environment at the same time. Fueling this effort is, well, fuel; specifically, biofuel. The Problem The military is a significant consumer of fuel, which at present comes from oil. U.S. troops, their trucks, ships and airplanes use close to 2 percent of the nation’s energy on an annual basis. The military is therefore as much at the mercy of high oil and gasoline prices as are consumers. In recent years, the DoD spent about $16 billion on fuel annually. Every dollar increase in the price of a barrel of oil costs the government about $130 million over the course of a year. A Solution To reduce vulnerability to oil prices, the DoD intends to acquire half its energy supplies from renewable sources that meet U.S. greenhouse gas emission initiatives. This can not only save taxpayer dollars and reduce our dependence on foreign oil, but can also help make this technology less expensive and more widely available, just as the DoD did by being an early adopter of other technologies, from the Internet to GPS. What The Experts Say Explains Sharon

We Salute Our Veterans

E. Burke, assistant secretary of defense for Operational Energy Plans and Programs at the Department of Defense, “As we improve the energy security of our armed forces, the Department hopes to make an important contribution to energy security for the whole nation.” As Elizabeth King, assistant secretary of defense for Legislative Affairs, put it, “Our dependence on [fossil] fuels degrades our national security, negatively impacts our economy and harms the environment. Significant developments in America’s advanced biofuel industry hold promise for meeting military needs.” Adds Brent Erickson, executive vice president, Biotechnology Industry Organization, “Fuel efficiency and access to fuel supplies are important ‘force multipliers’ because they increase the military’s ability to operate where needed and can reduce the number of combat forces necessary to protect energy supply lines.” Biofuels produced at small, strategically located biorefineries, many at the DoD believe, can best meet America’s future needs. Hiring Managers Cite Military Experience As A Plus For Job Seekers (NAPS)—New research finds employers not only value military experience in job applicants, but the skills veterans develop during service may give them an edge. The research is particular-

Veterans have, of course, always faced barriers when competing for and transitioning into civilian jobs. In 2010, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that reservists and National Guard-

ly timely, as the U.S. is committed to downgrading its military operations and an increasing number of war veterans are finding they need considerable career guidance and training when they return home. To expand the limited research on success criteria for military personnel entering civilian careers, the University of Phoenix Research Institute surveyed hiring managers in diverse industries. The findings are published in the report “Hiring Heroes: Employer Perceptions, Preferences, and Hiring Practices Related to U.S. Military Personnel.”

members had much higher unemployment rates than civilians. Today, however, many hiring managers are citing military experience as a plus, saying veterans possess skills and attributes that play well on the job. This is good news for veterans who face unique barriers including disabilities, poor transition assistance, concerns about calls to active duty, and misperceptions about their skills. It is, in fact, military skills such as leadership and team building that

Army medicine: a compelling career choice for all life stages (ARA) - The U.S. Army has one of the largest comprehensive systems of health care in the country and offers physicians the chance to provide high-quality patient care without concern about the business side of running a practice. Army physicians often practice in diverse environments - from large hospitals in major American cities to rural clinics in third-world countries. These opportunities help expand their professional and leadership skills, regardless of where their careers take them. Biology lab to basic training When student Allyson Fewell decided on a career in medicine, it was because she knew she wanted to interact with people and serve humanity - two things she felt she could not achieve working only in a lab. But funding medical school presented a serious challenge. "I knew I didn't want to take on $150,000 in debt. Then I heard that I should learn more about the opportunities in military medicine," says Fewell. "Both my grandfathers served in World War II and their experience sparked my interest in exploring the Army." The Army's F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) and loan repayment helps defray the cost of medical school, and financial rewards can exceed what professionals in some areas will earn in the private sector. After speaking with many people who also took the military route, Fewell learned the Army would pay for her tuition and provide her with a living allowance. In exchange, she would give four years of service, with the option of staying on after she met the service requirement. The call to service and her patriotism were two very important, intangible reasons she joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Now a captain in the Army and chief of medical residents at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Fewell credits her success to all of the teachers, mentors and leaders who opened doors and helped her find the right career fit. Last year, Fewell traveled to Haiti with a group of volunteer military doctors after the earthquakes there devastated much of the country.

LIEUTENANT COLONEL DORE GILBERT, M.D., AT CAMP PHOENIX IN AFGHANISTAN.

You pick the place, We’ll bring the food.

DURING ROUNDS AT BROOKE ARMY MEDICAL CENTER, CAPTAIN ALLYSON FEWELL, M.D., CHECKS A SOLDIER'S BREATHING. Achieving a lifelong dream at 60 Not every career path is a straightforward one. In 1984, at age 34, Dr. Dore Gilbert, a dermatologist in Orange County, Calif., was in serious discussions with a recruiter about joining the Army Medical Corps. But with young children and an established medical practice, he just couldn't sign on the dotted line. Instead, he channeled his desire to be of service by sitting on his local school board for many years. Years later, with all five of his kids out of college, his youngest joined the Marines and renewed Dr. Gilbert's interest in the Army. At age 60, he finally joined the Army Reserve. "The camaraderie is the draw - and the sense of doing something important," says Gilbert. "It gives me the opportunity to help young men and women who are the best of the best. And being a reserve officer allows me to keep my practice." He received the rank of lieutenant colonel because of his years of clinical practice and quickly began training to pass physical training requirements (27 situps in two minutes, 18 push-ups in two minutes and running two miles in 19 minutes, 54 seconds). Surprising even himself, he surpassed each of these necessary benchmarks and began blogging about his experiences on an Army website, www.ArmyStrongStories.com. After six months back home, serving one weekend a month, now it's off to Afghanistan. Gilbert's three-and-a-half month assignment overseas is to stabilize wounded Soldiers while they wait for surgeons. His experience as a dermatologist will also help Soldiers return to the field faster as they will no longer need to travel to Germany for skin treatments he can address on site. "It's a very high tempo base, and supporting the thousands of soldiers in the brigade is exactly what I want to be doing at this stage in my career. The Army Reserve allows me to gain these great new experiences and do something meaningful while knowing my practice is covered until I return home," says Gilbert. "And, according to the general, I am the oldest soldier in the brigade." Dynamic career, meaningful work An Army medical career offers a variety of financial incentives and benefits, including medical scholarships, loan repayment, internship programs and financial assistance to medical residents and postgraduate students. For example, students training to be Army physicians receive a monthly stipend of $2,088 to help cover living expenses during medical school. employers say are highly valued and transferable to civilian jobs. The research Continued from page 7 finds 92 percent of respondents said employers have few reservations about hiring military personnel as long as they are qualified. Three- quarters of respondents said that employers have few concerns about hiring reservists or National Guard members, even though these employees might be called away from work. The research was highlighted in a recent webinar, “From Enlisted to Employed: Educating Military Veterans for Civilian Careers,” presented by the University of Phoenix Research Institute and hosted by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The webinar panel featured academic, industry and military experts who examined the challenges service members face when entering the current workforce. Panelists also discussed how educators can better meet service members’ needs and how servicepeople can best position themselves for civilian jobs. Moderator Dr. Tracey Wilen-Daugenti, vice president and managing director of the University of Phoenix Research Institute, says, “Given our current economic climate, it is imperative that we not only help job seekers understand what employers need today, but also encourage partnerships between educators and industries to develop a strong employment pipeline for the future.” For the full report and access to the webinar, visit www.phoenix.edu/institute.
