Delivering Social Responsibility with GROUNDWORK

Introducing

GROUNDWORK WHO WE ARE Groundwork is one of the UK’s leading environmental and social charities that is changing places and changing lives in your local community, one green step at a time. Groundwork Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford (MSSTT) works locally and in East Lancashire to provide training and create jobs, reduce energy and waste, re-connect people with nature and transform whole neighbourhoods. Step by step we’ll go on changing places and changing lives until everywhere is vibrant and green, every community is strong enough to shape its own destiny and everyone can reach their potential. In order to reach our goals, we understand the need to engage with local businesses who share our ambitious aim of changing places, changing lives. Whether you are a large or small company, we can help you to deliver and reach your social and environmental goals, by getting involved in our projects and activities.

CHALLENGES Help us reach our target to change places and change lives by taking part in an employee challenge or action day. Our corporate volunteer co-ordinators will work with you to establish your objectives and match a suitable project to your business. GET INVOLVE

Help us transform Trafford Ecology Park A hidden urban oasis in the centre of Trafford Park, a valuable green space for residents, workers and visitors. Without help from volunteers and support from businesses, this fantastic local asset will risk becoming neglected and derelict like it once was over 25 years ago. Help us protect and enhance this recognised Site of Biological Importance through volunteering or sponsorship of a particular project at the park. Your volunteers could get involved in:

>>Habitat protection and enhancements. >>Maintenance and repair to site infrastructure. BENEFITS TO YOU >>Planting and greening around the site. All our Action Days are fully risk assessed and comply with health and safety legislation.

CHALLENGES D

GET INVOLVE

Support a community project in your area Here at Groundwork MSSTT, we work with many communities across Greater Manchester and East Lancashire. It might be that we are delivering a project local to you or that you have a particular project in mind that you would like to support. Our corporate volunteer co-ordinators can help you decide what scale and type of project will best suit your business and team. Ways to get involved:

>>Fundraise for a project local to you.

>>Identify and support a garden or play space for your local community or school.

>>Get stuck into a green space clean up in your area.

" I honestly didn’t believe I would enjoy it so much and it’s been great meeting new people. I honestly believe it is helping me change my life and be a more active member of my local community.”

Community Volunteer on the Adactus Miles Platting Growing Project

GRANTS

“PwC Manchester are proud to work alongside Groundwork MSSTT at the Victoria Street Legacy Garden to help them on their mission to improve local conservation areas and support sustainable enterprise in the North West.” Michael Pymm, Associate, PwC

Run a local grants scheme Groundwork can help you give back directly to your local community by establishing a local grants scheme and involving you in the delivery process. By offering a community fund or grant, you can see your generosity come alive. You could even involve your staff in the process. How can we help this process? Groundwork can work with you to develop and manage the grant scheme. With our connections to the local community we can ensure it meets local needs. We can also provide design and project management services to ensure individual projects are delivered. Involve your staff: Help staff feel proud of their workplace, by involving employees in choosing the project or running a competition. Organise some office fundraising to raise additional support or arrange a staff volunteering day to help deliver individual projects.

"The Groundwork team has provided valuable support for the Better Together campaign in the North West. With over 30 years’ experience of transforming local communities, their knowledge is enormously beneficial and a great contribution. Working together as a team, Groundwork will now be commissioned to carry out the labour required for the winning project and will also be on hand to provide any tips and advice to members of the community to help ensure the project is as successful and sustainable as it possibly can be.” Chris McElligott, Together Mutual Insurance

SKILLS SHARE Share skills and professional expertise with local young people We are looking for volunteers who can assist our Achievement Coaches to inspire young people in and out of the classroom. Our programme requires people from a variety of business backgrounds who can share their skills with young people that need an extra boost of confidence to get them to where they need to be.

HELP INSPIR

Volunteer on our Achievement Coach Programme Benefits to the young people: Achievement Coaches work with young people who are failing to achieve their true potential. Your staff could play a key role in inspiring and supporting a young person towards a brighter future, passing on valuable skills such as communication and careers advice. How the programme works: Your staff will work with a Groundwork Achievement Coach who will guide them through the whole process. They will link with a school, support your staff in the role and agree an appropriate level of commitment. Your staff will also have the opportunity to take a coaching qualification. This role is a fantastic opportunity to gain personal and professional satisfaction and is completely adaptable and tailored to suit you and your team.

“ Groundwork’s Achievement Coaches provide an independent support mechanism for the young people. We have seen several of the pupils involved take major steps in their personal development. We are delighted with the impact of the programme.” Janice Allen, Deputy Head, Abraham Moss High School

Examples of our

PARTNERSHIPS

Cargill, based in Trafford Park, and Groundwork have developed a partnership which has resulted in significant benefits for the environment and local communities, and for Cargill staff. Partnership highlights include:

>>Several team building days at Trafford Ecology Park where the employees got stuck into basic maintenance tasks and habitat creation. >>Completion of major projects at the Ecology park on a pro bono basis by Cargill’s highly skilled employees and contractors. >>A contribution of £12,000 to the Trafford Eco Streets grants programme and involvement on the Grants Panel.

Whilst working on Gorton Reservoirs, United Utilities staff decided to offset their carbon footprint by working with Groundwork and Gorton Horticultural Society, to give back to the local community. The staff volunteered to help maintain the overgrown hedgerows and clear up unkempt green spaces, in preparation for development of community growing areas. This community scheme was part of a wider national partnership between Groundwork and United Utilities, known as United Futures which supports environmental projects in areas and neighbourhoods that are affected by United Utilities asset improvement works. BNY Mellon staff attended a series of Employee Challenge Days at Trafford Ecology Park and at Manchester’s Dig the City Event 2013. Groundwork facilitated a programme of practical conservation, DIY and gardening that would benefit the local environment and community. BNY Mellon volunteered at Dig the City to help Groundwork staff prepare a pop-up City Forest in Exchange Square in the centre of Manchester, helping to transport, plant and water the trees ready for Manchester’s annual urban garden festival. Long term Groundwork supporters M&S took part in a local conservation project at the River Medlock as part of their local store CSR strategy. They undertook tasks such as litter picking, weeding, clearing pathways.

“We decided that where we wanted to put our money was in improving the spaces in which our customers and employees lived” Mike Barry, head of sustainable business at M&S.
