IP Benefactors Program
GW Law’s Intellectual Property Legal Studies Program is a recognized international thought leader, combining strong faculty, stellar students, broad offerings, and innovative conferences and international programs in locations including but not limited to Brazil, China, Munich, and India. Our unique partnerships with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the Register of Copyrights, and the Federal Circuit go far beyond our DC location. And unlike many law schools, GW is committed to law in action, not just law on the books. Accordingly, we actively build bridges between law school and law and policy practice through:
• unmatched course coverage (nearly 20 different offerings per semester), focused on teaching critical practice skills; • the largest externship program in the country, providing students with the opportunity to learn by doing, working with the principal government agencies and judicial authorities charged with creating and enforcing IP law in the United States; • an emphasis on policy-relevant scholarship and faculty engagement in law reform both in the United States and internationally; • the power to convene business leaders, regulators, and judges from around the world to develop solutions to core issues regarding the future of innovation; and • a dedicated career services officer to help IP students connect with practicing attorneys and launch their careers.

The Intellectual Property Law Benefactor Program The IP Benefactor Program allows select law firms and companies to engage in GW Law’s top-ranked, dynamic intellectual property law community. IP Benefactors develop and maintain connections with cutting-edge legal researchers and policy makers, and have the opportunity to play an active role in shaping one of the nation’s preeminent intellectual property law programs. IP Benefactors as well as Advisory Board members make a minimum contribution of $10,000 to GW Law each year. Each IP Benefactor sends a representative to the two Intellectual Property Advisory Board meetings held annually.
IP Benefactors ENJOY: Intellectual Property Advisory Board Membership IP Advisory Board members include leaders of the IP bar, prominent judges, corporate executives, and government officials. The IP Board meets in the spring and fall to consider topics of current interest. Each meeting includes a reception, dinner, breakfast, and lunch so that members can get to know one another and other leaders in the GW Law community. Access to Faculty and Staff Members Intellectual Property Advisory Board Associate Dean for Intellectual Property Law Studies John Whealan, former Deputy General Counsel and Solicitor at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, serves as the point of contact at the Law School for IP Benefactors. He will work with you to determine how GW Law’s team of talented faculty and staff members can help your company promote research and education in the field of intellectual property law. Support from GW Law’s Career Development Office Among the many services that the GW Law Career Development Office provides is a dedicated Associate Director who specializes in intellectual property law. The Law School will host a lunch for each IP Benefactor when he or she can meet and give a presentation to our students. In addition, IP Benefactors are invited to participate in our annual IP Networking Fair at no charge. Use of Law School Facilities IP Benefactors enjoy the use of our state-of-the-art classrooms, conference rooms, and moot court rooms (subject to availability) in order to host a variety of events ranging from one-on-one meetings to daylong symposia to elegantly catered dinners. Invitations to IP Events IP Benefactors receive VIP invitations to all events sponsored by the IP program, including conferences on cutting-edge legal issues, evening lectures by prominent members of the IP field, and a luncheon speaker series featuring leading scholars from around the country. Library Privileges Each IP Benefactor becomes a “Friend of the Jacob Burns Law Library.” This membership entitles the Benefactor to gain access to the library, enjoy expedited interlibrary loan privileges, and receive support from the Law School’s Associate Dean for Information Services. IP Benefactor Acknowledgement Each IP Benefactor is prominently acknowledged in IP program brochures widely distributed to prospective and current students, on the IP program website at www.law.gwu.edu/IP, in the biannual IP newsletter, and in other materials and events produced by the IP program.
