BARKS FROM THE EDITOR

Maintaining optimism is my ultimate goal in life, but these times are managing to make my goal seem unattainable. Instead of wallowing in worry, however, 1choose instead to be thankful that our overindulgence of the 80s is over, and we are now forced (again) into introspection. What have we been doing for the past decade? Where did it go? And will we ever recover from the damge? I will not subject you to my opinions of the crises in Kuwait, Iraq and Los Angeles (South Africa, Sudan, etc., etc.,). I will, however, admit I was shocked out of sheer naivete when I heard of Marilyn's experience with the dog "broker" (see the "President's Message" on page 5). Just when I thought the only reliable thing leftwas the care and concern we share for our animals, I hear of further destruction of the integrity of the innocent people who do care. Marilyn's experience occurred because of pure concern for the welfare of the German Wirehaired Pointer. It was not a concern for "the competition." What is important in Marilyn's message is her emphasis of the breeder's need to look out for eachother. For it is the innocent people who will pay the price of ignoring what the liars and looters are getting away with. We are angry that our rights to breed our dogs as we wish may soon be taken away from us, but can't we see that it is because of people like this dog "broker"that we will soon lose our rights? Can't we see that it is because the puppy mills continue to breed for profit and the shelters have no choice but to kill thousands upon thousands of unwanted animals a year that we will have to pay exorbitant prices for the rights to a breeding license? As we seem to be getting much more verbal in our approach, let's continue to speak up. Let's inform our fellow breeders what is happening to their dogs and pray that they will not only care and take action, but that they will also inform us as to what has happened to ours. Educate those who do not have the experience you have enjoyed. And, perhaps, a few dogs' lives will be spared, and the concerned breeders may continue to enjoy the freedom of breeding healthy, intelligent and wanted animals.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As breeders,

it is very important to us that "our" puppies

are placed in just the right homes, whether they be for hunting, showing or just loving. This is often times difficult to do when it is in your own neighborhood. It is very difficult to do when dealing out of state. The following is about breeders looking out after each other. Around the Thanksgiving holidays, Gina McCain was visiting her mom, who had recently moved to Arizona, not too terribly far from where I live. Gina called regarding whether or not I had knowledge of a particularly large block ad that appeared in the Arizona republic/Phoenix Gazette advertising for sale "RARE BREED GERMAN WIRE-HAIRED POINTERS - 8 WEEKS TO 5 MaS" and other eye-catching phrases. The wording required that it be checked out. If there were Wire breeders in the Arizona area, contacts could be made, not only with the breeder, but with the prospective owners of the pups. Checking it out was not an easy matter. The phone number was a "mobile" number. The party answering was very friendly and gave sufficient information to lead us to believe he knew nothing about the breed. Upon further inquiry regarding the age differences advertised, I was finally told that he had some six month old pups, two females, one of which was white, out of a top producing sire. He had no eight week old pups. At my request, two other people called and spoke to this person. To all these individuals different ages, sexes and colors were given. He did not want to discuss price over the phone, although a range was finally given of $150-$650. All conversations were via mobile phone .. He indicated at one time in our conversation that he was hoping to meet other breeders so that maybe an arrangement could be worked out for breeding these "rare breeds" dogs. He said he was a dog trainer and knew them to be good in the field. I contacted several prominent field trainers/ trialers in Arizona. They had never heard of him .. I, myself and one other person asked if we could come see the dogs, as we were interested sin purchasing one, but it was not possible for various reasons. It was finally admitted in a subsequent conversation that the dogs weren't in Arizona, but were expected shortly. Throughout these various calls, we were gathering information. The more we heard, the more suspect he became. When I inquired ion the pedigree names, he didn't have them with him (remember, he was on a mobile phone - always). I asked for any names he might be able to supply. When the name "Afterhours" was mentioned, I knew to call Tina Whitmore and check out this guy's story. To say the least, Tina was in shock. She had received an inquiry from a person in Arizona wanting a GWP for his father as a present, as the father's dog had died. Two different pedigrees and video tape were ultimately sent to him and he had paid a $50.00 puppy deposit. She did not know how this person obtained her name. The person called and stated that they wished a second puppy for a friend. At the time of my call to Tina, no GWPs had been shipped and no final agreement on sale had been reached. I related the chain of events and a copy of the ad was faxed to Tina. Tina anonymously contacted this person and got similar stories to the ones I related. In addition, she was informed that the GWP made a great guard dog and could take whatever was given to them. Needles to say, no dogs were shipped to this individual. There was a still a question as to why someone would want to invest money into the purchase of

two out-of-state dogs, pay for shipping to Arizona, invest in block advertising and then turn around and resell them, probably at a loss. You would think this is the end of the story - pups rescued from potential bad situation - but not quite. An officer of the Arizona Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals happened to stop by our offices. I related this occurrence, and she began shaking her head signifying she understood what was coming next. She informed me that this is one of several scams utilized throughout the country. Scammers obtain official pedigrees (i.e., "papers"), locate dogs through the pound, animal shelters or the street resembling the breed for which they have "papers," place ads in local newspapers for particular breeds and sell the dog, complete with "papers." They may also do their own breeding. In other words, for $50.00 ( the price of the puppy deposit) he obtained two different "papers' allegedly showing the lineage of a GWP that he had for sale and for which he could pass off to an ignorant buyer. This is why the colors/sexes/ages/prices kept changing. This is why we could never come by to see the dogs, because they only existed for a short period of time. Thanks to Tina's records and the information we had obtained, ASPCA has begun an investigation of its own. If I hear anything back fro the ASPCA, I'll let you know. By the way, should you be contacted by anyone with the name of Gilbert Ortez from Chandler, Arizona, please let me know, and please don't sell him or send to him any pedigrees or GWPs.

••• It seems that we just finish one Nationals and it's time to make plans to attend the next. A lot of hard work has gone into our Nebraska Nationals week, and we hope that everyone will again plan on attending. We have just received approval on our specialty judges: Mrs. Betty Sandberg from Barnum, Minnesota - all conformation breed classes; Mrs. Mary Lou Doak, Johnston, Iowa - all obedience classes; Mr. Bryan Rickertsen, Walton, Nebraska - Sweepstakes. We are especially pleased to have Ms. Judy Webb, an AKC licensed judge from Albuquerque, New Mexico, as our show Futurity judge. Anyone who has been in Wirehairs for any length of time will readily recognize Ms. Webb's expertise in Wirehairs. It is our hope that we have a quality entry for her, and urge you to contact Aloysia Hard and get your Wirehair nominated. All of our judges are very respected, experienced and excited to render their opinion at our upcoming Nationals, and we hope that each of you will support them and the GWPCA. You may even be lucky enough to walk away with a never-before marketed Wirehair sculpture on point, or one of the many other Wirehair sculptures and "special" trophies planned. Best wishes to you all, and I look forward to seeing you again in Nebraska in September.

The classic coat in your breed is so important, and was pleased to find very nice wiry coats of proper length and texture. Some dogs were presente more finely groomed than others, but all were clean, and showed no signs of ill health. Every range of color was present, but as long as it was within standard, the color had no bearing i~ my decisions. Moving, as the exhibitors will probably testify,(we moved ..lots!), should be llfree and smooth, with good reach in the forequarters, and a good drivin power in the hindquartersll. found some very nice side movers, but if was to be real critical, would like to see a little more power in the rear. This may come with maturity.

One of the most pleasing experiences of this judging assignment was the puppies wonderful attitudes. They were very sound, and willing to please some just didn1t know what they were supposed to be doing! Every tail was up, and active. Your entire club should be congratulated on the fine job of putting on a well run organized show, and special notice should be given to those who actually did the detail work.

DELAWARE VALLEY FIELD TRIAL RESULTS On Feb. 29 and March 1 the Del-Val GWP club held their spring trial at the Assunpink WMA in Clarksburg NJ.The grounds were in the best condition that we have seen them for years. There was plenty of. space for the dogs to run, with many of the fields being cut corn and planted with winter wheat. We passed last years record entry and ran 113 dogs in the two days. I want to thank the many club members who came out to help, everyone pulled their weight and took responsibility for whatever needed to be done. Our fall trial is scheduled for Oct.4&S but may have to change due to the early dates for the Nationals. The VERSATILE also contained the sad news of the passing of Katherine (Mickey) McCarthy. Mickey and her husband Bob have been members of the GWPCA as well as the Delaware Valley club for many years. Their Wires included multiple group winner Ch. Laurwyn's Boursin. Until very recently they never missed a Nationals, and one of the pleasures of the Nationals for me was visiting with Mickey and Bob. Mickey will be fondly remembered as a lady who enjoyed her dogs and promoted good sportsmanship, fairness and friendship. Our sincere condolences to you and your family, Bob. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL'! FORT DETROIT GWP CLUB The long-time editor of the FDGWPC newsletter, THE BARBED WIRE is Dolores Furesz, whose newsletters are always well-done, interesting and informative. Her efforts are greatly appreciated by club members. Fort Detroit is a very active club. From August thru December they held a licensed hunting test, a fun hunting test, two licensed field trials, a specialty show, regular monthly meetings and a Christmas party. Several members also attended the Nationals where they cheered on club member John Schoonover,

who won the 1991 National Amateur Championship with FC/AFC Marie Laveau von Steuben. Coming up in the immediate future are th"1'! club's Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet, a licensed hunting test April 4, and AKC approval has been requested for field trials April 25-26 and May 23. Long-range, ~ort Detroit will be hosting the 1993 Nationals. Under the 1eadersh i p of club Pres i den>t and Nat i ona 1 Events Commi ttee Cha i rman Bi 11 Richardson, exciting plans are being made~ for a Nationals which promises to be an enjoyable event for all who attend. GWP CLUB OF NORTHERN OHIO Jean Renner is editor of the fine GWPCNO newsletter. This club has a very clever logo - the 1 etters "GWPCNO" have been des igned into the shape of a GWP head. The members are diligently working toward gaining AKC approval to hold licensed events. Last June they voted to award Rosettes to the dogs who achieve the most in the Field, Conformation 1991. The first Rosettes will be awarded at the Annual Meeting and Obedience during in Feb. 1992. In Feb. 1993 the first Wolfram Stumpf Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the active club member who has done the most for the Club and with their dog(s) during the 12 month period from 9/1/91 thru 8/31/92. Jean, personally and on behalf of the GWPCA, our deep and sincere sympathy on the loss of your husband of 41 years late last Fall. Chuck Renner was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, and he will be missed. In

TWIN CITIES GWP CLUB The latest TCGWPC newsletter, the NEWS WIRE, reported that new club officers are: Shannon Florek-Pres.; Sue Mueller-VP; Elizabeth (Liz) Barrett-Secy. and newsletter editor; and Linda Michaelis-Treas. Board members are: Tim Sachs, Greg Dixon, Bob Friedell, Dale Lyddon and Helen Shelley. The News Wire contained a timely reminder from Liz that with spring just around the corner, it will soon be time for the dogs' annual heartworm check; also to bring vaccinations up to date and have the dogs checked for internal parasites good advice for us all. To give club members an opportunity to get together to work with their dogs, the TCGWPC is planning to have a training day once month. Birds will be available for a small fee. Attendees will bring a sack lunch and the club will provide coffee. This club's calendar contains events for everyone whatever their interest - although it sounds as though locating grounds for field events could be a problem.

Q: My dog paws at her muzzle after eating. Her teeth are cleaned and brushed on a regular basis and her whiskers and beard are combed daily. Any suggestions as to why she needs to paw at her muzzle after meals? (Sometimes she'll go so far as rubbing against furniture or a wall.) It

A: The phenomenon

of the "muzzle-rubber" is not confined to Wirehairs. It is a behavior observed in many dogs with beards. They may do it to dry the beard off or to remove food particles after eating. My dogs rub their bodies along a wire mesh fence when they are wet presumably to squeegy dry the coat and muzzle. More serious causes of muzzle-rubbing include cheilitis and atopy. Cheilitis is a lip fold infection that may cause a persistent skin irritation and will make a dog rub the mouth. Inspect these areas when checking the teeth. The skin in the fold will be red and malodorous and the surrounding hairs may be discolored. General cleanliness, and a tamed iodine solution swabbed on daily will help clear up the cheilitis. Sometimes oral antibiotics are needed. Inhalant allergic dermatitis or atopy has also been a cause of face-rubbing in dogs. Most of these dogs also chew their feet and may have runny eyes during the "allergy season." In general, muzzle-rubbing is one of those habits that wirehairs can have like rolling on their backs in the grass, licking each others ears, or sneezing when excited - it is a variation on the normal and an endearing behavior. IS AN ELEVATION

OF PRESSURE

within the eye beyond normal limits. It is the leading cause of blindness in middleaged dogs. The left eye is affected twice as often as the right eye wit the second eye becoming involved within one year in nearly all cases. Glaucoma may be a primary problem in breeds that have a hereditary predilection such as in cockers, poodles and basset hounds, or secondary due to other ocular diseases. Mild elevation of the intraocular pressure can lead to very subtle signs such as frequent yawning, mild tearing or less playful behavior. Severe acute glaucoma typically results in a "steamy" eye with a dilated pupil, cloudy cornea, severe reddening of the sclera and blindness. The dog may appear painful when the head is touched or try to rub its eye on the rug. In longer standing cases, the eye may appear markedly enlarged. Pain is caused by pressure on the ciliary nerves in the eye. These innervate the ciliary body of the iris which secretes the aqueous humor that fills the anterior and posterior chamber of the eye. The aqueous drains through the filtration

angle into the intrascleral blood supply. This angle is blocked in glaucoma. This outflow resistance rather than overproduction of the aqueous causes the pressure to rise in the eye. Early Glaucoma can only be diagnosed using a tonometer, an instrument that measures intraocular pressure. A goniscope is a special instrument used by veterinary opthalmologists to

measure the filtration angle (also called iridocorneal angle). This angle may be congenitally narrow in American cocker spaniels and toy and miniature poodles leading to glaucoma later in life. If excess pressure in the eye is relieved quickly, either medically or surgically, vision may return. Otherwise, the intraocular structures may be irreversibly damaged.

BREED POINT COMPETITION

1991

MOST DOG OWNERS BELIEVE THAT THEIR

dog cannot contract Brucellosis if it hasn't been bred. This is not the case. Brucella canis, the causative bacterium, is passed via breeding in semen fluids of the male and vaginal fluids from the female. The bacteria are also shed in urine. Droplets of urine carry the microorganisms to the mucous membranes of the mouth and nasal passages as well as the conjunctiva of the eye. Infected bitches may pass the disease to her offspring in utero or through vaginal discharge and milk. Different strains of Brucella cause disease in many species of animals. each strain is relatively species specific, but there is some cross infection. Brucella canis is the type that affects dogs and is responsible for devastating reproductive disease, abortion, resorption of fetuses, stillborn and weak pups and sterility in both the male and female. Once infected, a dog is infected for life and is a source of infection to others. Infected animals should be removed from breeding programs. It is recommended that all breeding animals be tested. A rapid screening test is available. A negative test can be trusted but false positives are common and must be retested by more sophisticated means. Screening tests should be run on all breeding animals, both the bitch and the stud. Ideally, both should have negative tests about one month prior to breeding. All positive testing animals should be removed from breeding kennels. Do not rely on luck to avoid brucellosis. Even if the stud dog you've chosen hasn't been bred before, he may be a carrier. He may have been infected by his dam or by the 13 yearold retires stud dog in the kennel next to him via urine droplets. Test and require testing of all planned breedings.

A large percentage of the dogs abandoned at kennels, pounds and else where are pedigreed. Proper placement of animals is a time consuming task. But now, thanks to Project BREED (Breed Rescue Efforts and Education), a coalition of volunteers for breed-specific rescue and adoption is readily accessible. Project BREED volunteers often have lists of good homes awaiting adoption of a particular breed and/ or provide housing for dogs awaiting permanent homes. The first Project BREED Directory, containing 291 pages and 1,560 contacts nationwide 'for rescue and adoption of 72 purebred dogs is available for only $13.95 plus $1.50 postage. This directory is a must for groomers, boarding kennels, obedience instructors, kennel clubs, shelters and pounds, and anyone who needs volunteer assistance in placing displaced purebred dogs. As a bonus, the 8-1/2 X 11" Project BREED Directory contains profiles on each breed of dog, indicating which breeds get along well with children, other animals and strangers as well as levels of activity required and other information important to consider before selecting a particular breed of dog as a family member. Features on the Project BREED Directory can be found in Dog News, the Humane Society of the United States Shelter Sense Magazine and many dog club newsletters. For a copy of Volume I of the Project BREED Directory, send check or money order for $15.45 to: Network for Ani-males & Females,Inc. 18707 Curry Powder Lane Germantown, MD 20874 Also, let the network know if you wish a telephone interview for rescue of a particular breed of dog for Volume II of the Directory. OBEDIENCE

REPORT

Wires in Washington (not D.C.) My

"NATIONALS"

EXPERIENCE

ACTUALLY

STARTED

when I changed planes in Salt lake City between Dallas and Richland ,Washington. As I boarded the new plane, traveling in jeans and a T-shirt emblazoned with a GWP, a lady two rows in back of my seat jumped up and said, "Are you going to the Nationals? Who are you?" After Lisa Jaffe and I had introduced ourselves, we spent the next ten minutes as the plane was loading talking across two rows of people. Finally, the gentleman next to her came to the obvious conclusion and asked if we'd like to sit together. As he and I both had aisle seats, this was quickly accomplished, and the remainder of the journey passed enjoyably. Coming into Richland, Lisa and I could not figure out why the farmers apparently have round, and green, fields. Turns out that eastern Washington is fairly arid and the round fields are a result of the irrigation equipment (cut me some slack guys, I've lived in Detroit, Chicago and Dallas - all I've ever seen is lawn sprinklers!). The show site was along the banks of the Columbia River, in Columbia Park. This site was scenic, lined with green trees and grass, a view of the meandering river and mountains (foothills? the closest I've ever come to mountains is freeway ramps) in the background. Truly pretty, but in some respects the scenery was more like Santa Fe than the area west of the Cascades. We also had a dearth of Wires in Obedience for the three shows I attended (there was an obedience trial Friday, but I arrived too late). I guess I thought there would be more because my friend Karen, of the OTCH Goldens fame, had been to

CORRECTIONS OOPS! In the Fall issue of the Wire-News, an incorrect answer appeared in the Q&A section of the Hunting column on page 42. The answer to the question, "At the MH testing level, can a dog be commanded to honor?" is "Emphatically, no!" Thanks to Aloysia Hard and Ray Calkins for their alertness!!' Also, I apologize profusely for the ommission of the 1991 Nationals judges' letters which were supposed to appear in the Fall issue. You may find them in this issue on pages 8 and 9, where you will also find the results to the 1991 Nationals Water Test. Please address any discrepancies to the Editor. Thank you.

California and told me that people show strange breeds in obedience out there, This means anything that's not a Golden, Border Collie, Poodle, Shepherd, or Doberman. I suppose if I'd looked back on the three years I've written this column and done the standings, I would have realized that most obedience titled Wires are found on the East Coast and in the upper Midwest. I did realize the entries were a little light when I had talked to Nancy Mason a week prior to the show and she asked if I was bringing an obedience entry. However, what we lacked in quantity, we made up for in quality. Saturday was the Inland Empire Kennel Association, Inc. show. The total number of Wires entered in Obedience was two in two classes. The first class I wa tched was Utility B where Ray Hennum was showing Ch. Nordic's Viking Brandy, UO under judge Carole 1. Hapke. Brandy (and Ray) did a nice job and earned a 197.5. In many Utility B classes this would be good

enough to earn first or second place and those coveted OTCH points. However, as luck would have it, three dogs tied for second place. Ray and Brandy were in a run-off and a crooked sit caused them to wind up in fourth place with no points. Ray tells me that Brandy has 40 OTCH points and all three required firsts. For the uninitiated, an OTCH (Obedience Trial Championship) requires 100 points (there's a schedule, based on dogs defeated) and three first place wins - one in Utility B, one in Open B and the third in either. Later Saturday afternoon, Heidi Hill showed her dog, Inverness Duchess Express, JH in Novice A. This was Heidi's first time in the obedience ring and she was very nervous. Despite this, she and Duchess went on to earn a 185 and a third place! I have to admit that I was very impressed with the Novice a judge, Frederic Marsh. Although maybe it's impractical in a larger class (Novice A was only 20 dogs), judge Marsh took the time after each dog's individual exercises to discuss the dog and handler's performance. Novice A people are the future of obedience and many of them, particularly in rural areas, do not train with experienced show competitors. Thus, having a judge explain what cost the dogs points (in a constructive manner) can have a great impact on the novice A competitor. Sunday was another beautiful day. Ray and Mae Hennum were running a hospitality suite out of their camper. After having met them face to face on Saturday, I availed myself of the coffee pot and the picnic Sunday morning - much nicer than the general food area. the Richland Kennel Club, Inc. show had about the same obedience

obedience in another ring at 9 a.m. I have to admit that at this point I could no longer stand to be a spectator. I'm a dog show junkie and ,after two days of not showing anything (my dogs were at summer camp with my vet!), I was going through withdrawal, so I volunteered to steward. I did okay until I set up the broad jump backward (well, so I've made one mistake in my life). Monday's entry under Judge Jean Rassbach ( a charming individual) was a total of three dogs in four classes. Obedience competition started with Ray and Brandy in Utility B. Ray must have wanted to test Brandy's hearing as on the first heel command in the signal exercise, Ray gave both a signal and an audible command. Unfortunately for Ray, Ms. Rassbach's hearing is fine and Ray's lack of concentration cost them three points. The rest of the performance was very good and Ray and Brandy received a 194.5 for their efforts. Because of the small entry, there was no rest for the wicked, so to speak (this is a colloquialism and no offense is intended). After finishing Utility B, Ray and Brandy had to go directly back into the ring for Open B. Brandy's performance was exceptional, and the judge's sheets later showed that she almost had a 199. However, on the long sit, Brandy apparently decided that it was time for a nap and lay down. This little maneuver sent their score from a 199 to a NQ. In Novice A we saw Heidi and Duchess

entry, the only difference was that Ray and Brandy were entered in both Open B and Utility B that day. Unfortunately, the results were not a lot different than Saturday. Brandy put together back to back 194s. That wasn't good enough to get a placement in Open B, but was good enough to be fourth, again, in Utility B. Fourth is nothing to sneeze at in a Utility B class, but I know Ray wanted the points, not the ribbons.

once again. The two of them were giving Ray and Brandy some tough competition for High in Trial. My notes and memory are a little unclear on this point, but as I recall, Heidi and Duchess were either one-half point up on Ray and Brandy or even with them after the individual exercises. Unfortunately, there must have been something in the air that day, as Duchess also decided to lie down and nap on

Heidi and Duchess fared better in Novice A. don't know if it was Mr. Marsh's comments the

Editor's Note:

prior day or some helpful hints from Ray and Mae (someone who maybe isn't seen in the ring, but definitely knows what's going on. I suspect it was both. Anyway, Heidi and Duchess scored a 192 under Judge Jean Hapke and walked away with first place! It got cold Sunday night, and Monday morning at the Specialty saw us walking around with coats on (prior to this, all we needed were Tshirts) and putting our hands in our pockets. Jack Dallimore judged the Futurity at 8 a.m., with

the long sit. Thus, they also NQ'd. The new entry on Monday was in a nonregular class. Selma Sholes Stephenson and her veteran dog, Ch. Artemis of I Spy, UDT put on a very nice performance in Veteran's class and earned a 193. Ray and Heidi ought to be glad that Selma didn't decide to show her 9 year old in a regular class. I believe they might have given everyone a run for High in Trial' Like any Obedience trial, the GWPCA's ended with some competitors satisfied with their dog's performance and others disappointed and hoping for a betterperformance next time (sometime with the same dog). Ray and Ch. Nordic's Viking Brandy took home High in Trial for their Utility B performance. However, with a little bit of luck, Heidi and Duchess might have taken it home, or Ray and Brandy for a different class. All of the dogs were deserving, but that's dog training, folks! One thing I'm sure of is that none of the entrants regretted being there as a good time was had by all. Take this column - PLEASE! I don't feel like the Rodney Dangerfield of the obedience world, but 1992 marks the fourth year I've done this column. I don't have a monopoly on GWPs in obedience (in fact, every year there are people out there training with dogs better than mine) and I'm also over committed on a nwnber of fronts. In short, I need a break. The membership deserves better than a burnt out obedience columnist. Although I have a few columns left in me - including one Bernee Foster Braun suggested in June that I haven't followed up on yet (sorry, Bernee, I still have your letter and it's on my list of "to dos" for January). Therefore, if anyone would like to become the new obedience editor, or even write a guest column and give me a breather, please let either Regina or me know. Thanks.

It is with much sadness that I must accept Ann's "resignation," and with the sadness, a feeling of remorse. For the very short time I have known Ms. Kostishak, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with her and reading her insightful and often witty Obedience Editorials. Ann's knowledge of both the breed and of Obedience is evident in each column, and her honesty is to be admired and respected. It will be a tough act, following in Ann's footsteps, but I am confident that there is another out there in GWP land capable of becoming the next great Obedience Editor. Please contact Ann Kostishak or me for information about writing the Obedience Column. Our addresses are listed on page 4. In the meantime, Ann, on behalf of the Wire-News Staff, I thank you very much, not only for your hard work and dedication, but also for teaching me about Wirehairs and Obedience. Best Wishes. - RFe MAY 1992
