Everyone is putting the finishing touches on the National events at a furious pace! Can you believe they even have time for a picnic, fun training day? Don't underestimate these hardy souls from the northwest. It will probably be their last chance at some sort of relaxation before "N" Day! The picnic will be held at Nancy and Larry Mason's 135 acre "farm" (I guess that's what a ranch is called in the NW!) in July and will include a Skeet Shooting Contest, as well as field training for beginners to old hands. There's even several ponds for doing water work. Where do I sign up??? The Mason's were hosts to the Cascade

After many years of serving as Editor of the newsletter, Liz Barrett-Dixon has passed the "mouse" on to Ellen Manns as the new editor. Ellen and her husband, Todd, got their first fuzz face from her first cousins, Sue and Bruce Mueller ... now that's keeping it "all in the family". Todd Manns was elected as the club's AKC Delegate for Legislative issues. Sue Mueller is filling in the President's slot, as Greg Dixon announced his resignation noting his very busy training schedule. The Club's May Field Trial is all in order, and they held a Hunting Test in June at the Dixon's "Backwood's Kennels". In order to accommodate as many club members as possible, several different locations are being discussed for club meetings central location, availability you all know how it goes. And they will be holding their Fourth Annual Club Picnic in July, complete with water

It is with a great deal of sadness that we let the Wirehair world know of the passing of Karla Weber's AmlCanlMex Ch Von Vaber's Magic Masked Madame. Known to everyone as "Miss Piggy" or "Pigann", she had recently been shown at our club's Specialty on June 1, and had just passed her 15th birthday. This beautiful bitch went BOS twice at the GWPCA Nationals (in 1983 to Ch Laurwyn's Cheeseburger and in 1987 to Ch Windhaven's Stutzer Stumper ... not bad company). She was completely owner handled. In fact, when the superintendent got the entry for the recent specialty, they questioned her birth date to make sure it was correct! The Club's Specialty was held in conjunction with the Kennel Club of Pasadena All Breed Show. The results of all classes including Sweepstakes for Puppies and Veterans are elsewhere in this issue. Plans are underway for the Club's yearly Hunting Tests and Field Trials. Special Events Chairman Nikki Litwin is planning a Fun Day in July where those in attendance will be introduced to the fundamentals of Agility. Joan Payton will be conducting a mini seminar on grooming and nail trimming.

The Club is "brewin'" up a few surprises for the Nationals! They've got some special conconction going, and those of you who'll be going to the Salmon dinner at the field events, will not be disappointed in what will be served! Enough said ...everybody else will have to wait til after the Nationals to find out what it was all about. As a tune-up for the Nationals, the Club is holding a Field Trial in September. And their Fun Day was held in May. Resources were pooled with the GSP Club of Oregon,
and for a nominal fee participants got lunch and birds! At the GWP Club of Northern California Specialty in April, Ann Duffin's Yon Duffin's Tornado went Winner's Bitch and finished her Championship. And Patty Loder's High Desert Buster Borwn took Third in the Open Dog Class. Ron Gross' Cascade MVP Lacy J took Third in the 12-18 Bitches Class.

Jan Fast's Haar Baron's Grizzly (aka "Jud") became a GWP narcotics detector dog. Jud earned his "badge" from the US Customs Service Canine Enforcement Training Center in April. Jan has been promised a photo of his first drug bust, as well as one of his "business" cards. The Club's Summer Picnic and Annual Awards Presentation were held at Bernee Brawn's place in June. There was a blind auction, field work, a CGC Test and a lot of good fun. The Del Val club is putting together a presentation of their plans for the '98 National events which will be held in Virginia to be presented at the '97 event in Washington. One thing we know from past Nationals this club has hosted, the hospitality will be flowing. The club lost a long time member this year. Bob McCarthy passed away following a long illness. Those of you who have been in the GWPCA for a long time will undoubtly remember Bob and Mickey McCarthy as supporters of the breed and the club. They were both very instrumental with helping the GWPCA hold their very first National Specialty which was hosted by the Del Val Club in 1980. they are both truly missed by all of us.

NAMES IN THE NEWS The names are sure familiar to us ...Bill Richardson and Sheri Graner-Ray, Doug Ljungren ...well, now there are know to a world far larger than our "Wirehair" one. Bill Richardson, our esteemed leader. He, one-half of the Levi/Billiook alike team. He runs a company called "Big Beaver Specialty" in Royal Oak, Michigan. The company specializes in displays to be used in stores. Well, the Public Broadcasting System recently taped a segment of his business for their "Small Business 2000" series. Perhaps you can catch it on your local PBS station ...it is Program #309 ...call to find out when it will air in your area. And Sheri Graner-Ray, our talented Web-master. She was recently featured in an article run in The Los Angeles Times newspaper. The article appeared on the front page of the business section, and was called "The Cutting Edge" ...its an on-going series that features smaller, independent firms. It seems that Sheri is one of five women in the country who develop computer programs and fantasy-based games specifically geared to the 7-17 year old girls in the country. A lot of BIG companies want her...real bad!!!! Doug Ljungren recently played a "bad guy" in an upcoming Kevin Costner movie. He has been kind enough to write up a short article on his adventure which will appear in the next issue of the newsletter. The good news is, neither he nor his horse "~1ark" were injured in the shoot. The bad news, he didn't get a picture of Kevin. Oh, Doug, we though we taught you better rhan that!

You just gotta love 'em! Owners of these bristle-faced comics know the antics, the daring moves (you know, the ones that add to your collection of gray hairs), the just downright humorous nature of the German Wirehaired Pointer. Knowing these propensities for clownism, it is difficult to explain to a visiting relative the "safe zone". Ours is a breed not apt to slobber and fawn, tail wagging, around a perfect stranger. Pushing oneself upon a Wire does not win his acceptance, but just the opposite. This is a breed originally designed to protect hearth and home from intruders, after the daily ritual of providing the meat for the evening meal. Remember, the standard says "aloof with strangers." The "safe zone" refers to the area directly around the dog, your being or belongings, that your Wire has determined needs protecting from strangers (which is generally anyone not properly introduced). Some Wires, even though properly socialized from youth, never accept strangers. On the other hand, there are those who welcome everyone as long lost family. This is due in a large part to ge-
"Safe Zone" By: Lisa Jaffe netics, although upbringing can have a strong impact on the adult Wires' tolerance to intruders. Don't forget, the Germans didn't mind a sharper, more assertive dog. Judges, and others approaching a Wire, need to be schooled in the "safe zone". The approach to any strange dog, regardless of breed, can trigger a bad situation if not done properly. Always approach from the front, never the side, making sure the dog knows of your presence. Approach at a moderate pace with confidence. (If you act nervous or apprehensive, the dog will start to have his doubts about you.) Never, never make eye contact, don't drop to your knees placing yourself eye-to-eye; and please, don't

carryon as if going over a new-born babe. Cooing and talking baby-talk will not raise confidences, but rather will raise doubts in his mind about your stability. Examinations should be conducted quickly and efficiently. Never allow your person to hover over the dog, or within the dog's "safe zone", longer than necessary to complete the examination. This is a fun-loving breed, totally devoted to their "family". If they decide to include you, a stranger, into their "family", then you are the luckiest person on earth. Remember the phrase, "aloof with strangers", and go from there.
This article will appear in the October issue of the AKC Gazette. Lisa volunteered to write an article for our Breed column, and I took her up on her offer. She has been involved in Wirehairs for over twenty years. Many of her Wirehairs have been in the Top Ten standings in both Group and Breed placements consistently. Many, many years ago an illustrated discussion of the GWP breed standard was drawn up by Judy Cheshire and Pat Laurans. I have come across my copy and after reading it again after all of these years, thought that it would be of interest and may benefit our membership. It has been sent on to our present BOD and with luck work will begin again on getting some illustrations for it.
THE GERMAN WIREHAIRED POINTER STANDARD WITH COMMENTS ON THE STANDARD BY PAT LAURANS AND JUDY CHESHIRE. GENERAL APPEARANCE- The German Wirehaired Point is a well muscled, medium sized dog of distinctive appearance. Balanced in size and sturdily built, the breed's most distinguishing characteristics are it's weather resistant wire-like coat and it's facial furnishings. typically pointer in character and style, the German Wirehaired Pointer is an intelligent and determined hunter. Comments- There should be an overall picture of balance. Adequate bone is important and dogs should give an impression of power without coarseness. HEAD - The head is moderately long with the skull broad and the occipital bone not too prominent. The stop is medium. The muzzle is fairly long with nasal bone straight, broad and parallel to the top of the skull. The nose is dark brown with nostrils wide open. A spotted or flesh colored nose is to be penalized. The lips are a trifle pendulous but close to the jaw and bearded. The jaws are strong with a full complement of evenly set and properly intermeshing teeth. The incisors meet in a true scissors bite. The ears are rounded but not too broad and hang close to the head. Eyes are brown, medium in size, oval in contour, bright and clear and overhung with medium length eyebrows. Yellow eyes are not desirable. Comments - should be pleasing to the eye, symmetrical with parallel planes. Length and breadth of muzzle should balance the backskull. Weak, snipey muzzles or short coarse muzzles should be faulted. Yellow eyes are undesirable and cause the dog to lack proper expression. A young dog with a light eye surrounded by a dark ring will have an eye that darkens to an acceptable color at maturity. Eyerims shouldfit tightly, the haw should not be visually evident. NECK AND BODY - The neck is of medium length, slightly arched and devoid of dewlap. The skin throughout is notably tight to the body. The body is a little longer than it is high, as ten is to nine. The back is short, straight and strong with the entire backline showing a perceptible slope down from withers to croup. The chest is deep and capacious with ribs well sprung. Loins are taut and slender. The tuck-up is apparent. Hips are broad with the croup nicely rounded. The tail is set high, carried at or above the horizontal when the dog is alert. The tail is docked to approximately two fifths of its original length. Comments- Throatiness is undesirable, resulting in a hound-like appearance. The line from neck to shoulder to back should flow smoothly without an angular look or abruptness. The topline should have a perceptible slope without being exaggerated. The ribs are well sprung, not flat or slabsided. The tail is set on as a continuation of the back. A low tailset with steep croup or a tail carried curled over the back should be faulted. FOREQUARTERS AND HINDQUARTERSThe shoulders are well laid back. The angulation of the hindquarters balances that of the forequarters. The forelegs are straight with elbows close. The thighs are strong and muscular. The hindlegs are moderately angulated at the stifle and hock and as viewed from behind parallel to each other. Round in outline, the feet are webbed, high arched with toes close, pads thick and hard, and nails strong and quite heavy. Leg bones are flat rather than round, and strong, but not so heavy and coarse as to militate against the dogs natural agility. Dewclaws are generally removed. Comments- Correct angulation is essential for proper reach and drive. Feet should be tight and rounded. Weak pasterns are undesirable as are hocks that turn either in or out when the dog stands naturally.
The functional wiry coat is the breeds most distinctive feature. A dog must have a correct coat to be of correct type. The coat is water resistant and, to some extent water repellent. The undercoat is dense enough in winter to insulate against the cold, but is so thin in summer as to be almost invisible. The distinctive outercoat is straight, harsh, wiry and flat lying, and is from one to two inches in length. The outer coat is long enough to protect against the punishment of rough cover, but not so long as to hide the outline of the dog. On the lower legs the coat is shorter and between the toes it is of softer texture. On the skull the coat is naturally short and close fitting. Over the shoulders and around the tail it is very dense and heavy. The tail is nicely coated, particularly on the underside, but devoid of feathers. Eyebrows are of strong straight hair. Beard and whiskers are medium length. The hairs in the liver patches in a liver and white dog may be shorter than the white hairs. A short smooth coat, a soft woolly coat, or an excessively long coat is to be severely penalized. While maintaining a harsh wiry texture, the puppy coat may be shorter than the adult coat. Coats may be neatly groomed to present a dog in natural appearance. Extreme and excessive grooming to present a dog artificial in appearance should be severely penalized. Comments - There are many variations in coat. Function should be the key word. The coat does not need to be long to have texture and be protective. A correct coat will feel harsh, however, even the best coat will not have the same texture as a broken-coated terrier, for example an Airedale or a Wire Fox Terrier. A soft coat, which leads to excessive coat and furnishings will attract dirt and debris and will weigh a dog down in the water. This defeats the purpose of a wire coat. Conversely, a smooth coat will not protect a dog traveling through hard cover or swimming in cold water. COAT -
The coat is liver and white, usually either liver and white spotted, liver roan, liver and white spotted with ticking and roaning or solid liver. The head is liver, sometimes with a white blaze. The ears are liver. Any black in the coat is to be severely penalized. Comments- There are many variations in the shades of liver, from chocolate to dark, dark brown. The nose on a liver or liver and white dog will always be liver. There will be no black on a dog with a liver colored nose. A dog with black in his coat will have a black nose. COLOR-
The dog should be evaluated at a moderate gait. The movement is free and smooth with good reach in the forequarters and good driving power in the hindquarters. The top line should remain firm. Comments The gait should be ground covering, effortless and purposeful. The topline should remain firm. Any dip behind the withers, rise at the croup or curve over the back should be faulted. GAIT-
SIZE- The German Wirehaired Pointer is a versatile hunter built for agility and endurance in the field. Correct size and balance are essential to high performance. To ensure the working quality of the breed is maintained, dogs that are either over or under the specified height must be severely penalized. the height of males should be 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder. Bitches are smaller but not under 22 inches.
Comments Bitches are smaller than dogs. Since there can be a difference of several inches in dogs, a bitch that is under the top limit for dogs is acceptable. TEMPERAMENTOf sound reliable temperament the German Wirehaired Pointer is at times aloof, but not unfriendly towards strangers; a loyal and affectionate companion who is eager to please and enthusiastic to learn. Comments The German Wirehaired Pointer may be initially cautious with strangers. This should not be misinterpreted as shyness. Aggression toward another dog should not be mistaken for viciousness.

Our dogs are defined by their coat. And yet there is a wide variety of opinion about what a correct "wirehaired" coat looks like, feels like and performs like. Long-time breeders often will say straight out that they prefer a softer coat because it produces more hair and "I'd rather have too much coat than not enough." This certainly is not an isolated opinion,based on the coats we regularly see on dogs winning in the show ring and even on some field dogs. Based on the breed standard, coat should be of paramount importance in our breeding programs. Without correct coat, our dogs lack the type that makes them distinctive as a breed. "The functional wiry coat is the breed's most distinctive feature. A dog must have a correct coat to be of correct type." So, what is a correct coat, by the standard, why is it so critical and how do we achieve it in our breedings? WHAT IS A CORRECT COAT First, let's talk about what is proper coat, then look at what simply isn't acceptable, no matter how many grooming products are used on it. An honest, 100 percent correct GWP coat feels like you could sand down your deck withthe dog. It is harsh, stiff and thick. On the head and ears, the hair is short, no less coarse, and should require little or no pulling, plucking or trimming to maintain that status. When you look at a correct coat, it stands off from the body slightly, providing a shadow of hair all along the bottom of the body outline and backs of legs. The beard and eyebrows on these ideal dogs are thick and bushy, made of the same hard, strong hair. We all know the standard is the goal toward which you aim your breeding program. Not every GWP has this perfect coat, although there are dogs with good, even very good coats, which should be ranked injudging and breeding higher than dogs with me-
diocre or poor coats. A very good coat is one that may carry more undercoat and frequently develops some softer, longer hair on the head and ears. The body coat is still thick and harsh, but the length and quantity of hair on the underline, backs of legs and facial furnishings may be more than the ideal. A good coat is one where the hair on head and ears is short, the body coat is coarse and dense, but may not be as long as a perfect coat, and furnishings may be somewhat less full and bushy than our ideal. WHAT IS AN UNACCEPTABLE COAT? This is where we run into the area of most controversy. "A short smooth coat, a soft woolly coat, or an excessively long coat is to be severely penalized." Unfortunately, many of the soft, wooly coats have a couple of wiry hairs in them and are thereby justified. An equally incorrect coat is thin, has no furnishings whatever, and could pass for a GSP. Neither of these coats serves the purpose for which this breed was developed. When we take on the responsibility of breeding, it is with the stated purpose of improving the dogs, of making them better able to fulfill the role for which they were originally designed. WHY EXCESSIVE GROOMING IS TO BE PENALIZED "Extreme and excessive grooming to present a dog artificial in appearance should be severely penalized." Everyjudge, handler and aware owner in the dog show game knows when a dog has been shaved, stripped to the skin, shaped, scissored, sprayed, chalked, etc. Dogs in this condition are shown, finished and bred on a regular basis. In addition to not meeting the written standard, these grooming practices further dilute the gene pool of correct coats by trying to pretend that unacceptable coats are correct, and using these dogs in breeding programs accordingly. WHY IS A COAT CORRECT OR UNACCEPTABLE? There are some GWP breeders who are rightfully proud of their dogs' accomplishments in the show ring and have expressed no desire to hunt their dogs. Nonetheless, this is a hunting breed. It was created to hunt, find birds and furred prey, seek out game for its master and dispatch predators. The dogs we produce now should be able to do that job, whether we ask it of them or not.
A dog with a correct coat, as described in the standard, can crash through heavy brush thickets without injury; it can retrieve waterfowl in freezing water and still retain its body heat; it can work in tall grass without attracting seeds and burrs to burrow into the skin and cause pain; it can run all day in heat or cold because it is properly insulated against either. The GWP, with a correct coat, can easily and happily meet the needs of the most demanding hunter in the most difficult conditions. The GWP wit an unacceptable coat cannot - at least not without discomfort for both dog and owner. HOW DO WE BREED FOR CORRECT COATS? This is a question that I think we all struggle to answer. In an article for NAVHDA(North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association) by C. Walton, the author notes, "Stability, a tendency for coats to be relatively uniform and fixed in a line, is a difficult goal for a breeder to obtain since the inheritance of coat texture, color and length is controlled by multiple genes involving up to eleven gene loci."
Obviously, with the melting pot of dogs used to develop the GWP, which is still a comparatively young breed, coat inconsistency will continue to haunt us. Nonetheless, basic genetics tells us we would be able to produce more uniform coats if we consistently bred only correct, very good or good coats. We all know of dogs with acceptable coats that have come from a parent or parents with mediocre or poor coats. But, in the third generation, those mediocre and poor coats crop right back up again.
Suffice it to say that reliably producing correct coats is a task on the order of seeking the Holy Grail. It would serve our dogs well if more breeders sincerely tried to meet that challenge, and more judges recognized their efforts.
Laura Reeves, The Scotia Kennel, is a multi-breed professional handler who has been involved with GWP for 15 years - in the ring, in the field and in the whelping box.
A common misconception is that a soft, fuzzy coat bred to a short, thin coat will produce a perfect coat. Not so's you'd notice it! What you find, mostly, is puppies with one or the other. In the next generation out of the pups who do develop reasonable coats, you generally turn up with a significant percentage of improper coats coming down from the grandparents. We could have an entire article on the topic of coat genetics, in fact I would love to see one, especially one with demonstrable testing behind it.
CON'T. JUDGING GSP VS GWP
WORKING Field ability was addressed by Ruth Ann Freer and Helen Shelley, both of whom have owned Dual Champions. Ruth Ann feels that hunting ability and bird instinct seems equal, but that the German Shorthair is a more powerful, wider running dog at field trials. She does state, however, that the Field Champion GWP's come closer to their breed standard than do most of the GSP's with those credentials. Helen adds that Wires

An honor not many dogs of any breed will recieve. The German Wirehaired Pointer was first recognized by the AKC in 1959 and it became the 114th breed to be admitted to the stud books. One year later in October of 1960 the very first GWP was awarded the coveted BIS ribbon. Ch Odmi1!'s Casanova bred by Anamary Compere and owned by Newton Compere captured the top spot at the Owensburg KC show. In total, 16 German Wirehaired Pointers (that I have been made aware of) have won AKC Best In Shows, with more winning BIS's in Canada and Mexico. The breed is being placed more and more in Group competition in shows across the country. Conformation, movement and overall coat quality have improved vastly in the past 30 years and the breed is proving itself to be worthy of a judges nod. Many of today's group placing dogs have hunting test titles, obedience titles and some are active hunting dogs. We even have a Dual Champion with multiple group wins under his belt. Siri" came to us via a hunting preserve where her dam was a working dog and I was a frequent guest. Siri finished her championship at 16 monbths old in 11 shows. Her BIS was won in 1983 at the Terre Haute KC under judge William Harvey. With 23 Group placements to her credit she finished as the #1 GWP in 1983 and #16 on the Sporting Group list.

The evaluation of a dog's coat is one of the more important tasks of a NAVHDAjudging team. In some European breed organizations field judges are not usually qualified to evaluate coats and these judgments are made by specially certified judges. NAVHDAjudges report coat characteristics and note any observed faults with specific attention to inherent defects. The task of evaluating a coat may be complicated by the fact that we are examining working dogs rather than well groomed show dogs and we have to recognize the results of wear and tear, diet and health problems and separate them from inherited faults. A dog's inherent coat problems cannot be cured and they should be properly identified because they can be passed on to the offspring if the dog is bred: on the other hand, coat problems linked to diet, disease and injury are not transmitted to the dog's genes and are of minor concern in evaluating your breeding program. None ofthe versatile breeds are immune to inherent coat problems although the wirehaired breeds seem to be lass stable than the short and flat

coated dogs and there is a tendency for a wide variability of coats among littermates in some wirehaired breed lines. STABll.JTY, a tendency for coats to be relatively uniform and fixed in a line, is a difficult goal for a breeder to obtain since the inheritance of coat texture, color and length is controlled by multiple genes involving up to eleven gene loci. This isn't the place for a discussion of coat genetics but stabilizing a wirehaired coat in a line is roughly analogous to juggling eleven different objects while keeping the assorted colors in proper order.

One primary property of a good protective coat, in both the short and long haired breeds, is an absorbed layer of an oily substance produced by glands in the skin. water from adhering to the coat and thus preserves the coat's insulating qualities. One of the common problems of dogs is a dry coat that results in brittle hair and a tendency for the coat to retain moisture and dirt. This can be aggravated by poor diet and health problems and is often
treated by the addition of fats to the diet but the fundamental problem is probably inherited. In the shorthaired versatile breeds, just as in the wirehaired dogs, a DUAL COAT is always the most desirable. This is a coat with a dense undercoat of shorter hair (fur) with an outer coat oflonger and thicker guard hairs. In short haired breeds this can be difficult to detect if the outer coat is dense but the thickness of the skin, technically the dermis, is a good clue since dogs with dual coat have more hair follicles and the dermis is therefore thicker. If a dog's coat appears to be thin you should gently pinch a fold of skin to judge its thickness, if the skin is very thin the dog may not have a dense undercoat. A dog's coat is always changing and seasonal shedding and regrowth, combined with wear (during the hunting season most of our dogs get a bit thin on the nose, chest and belly) can confuse the issue when you
attempt to evaluate a coat. A versatile's coat usually doesn't reach the final stage of development until well after sexual maturity and, especially for some wirehaired breeds, the coat can change continually for the first two years of life. Experience and personal preferences may affect the evaluation of a coat for individual breeding programs and within the range of variability allowed in the breed standards, your personal preferences are as good as anyone else's. The dual coat should always be durable, if the hairs break and shed when the hair is brushed against the lay ofthe coat the dog has a problem. The coat should also be dense and this shouldn't be decided by rubbing dog's back, as the coat is always densest on the back and shoulders (and the dermis is always thickest in these areas), the flanks and chest are where a thin coat can be detected and these areas should be examined with care. There is always confusion about coat terminology such as stiff, harsh, coarse and so on, so we should examine these terms individually. An Open coat is jargon for sparse coverage. If there isn't much hair covering a portion of the body, we refer to that part of the coat as open. Stiffness is the tendency of a hair to resist bending and has nothing to do with texture and little effect on the feel of the coat unless you brush your hand against the lay of the hair. Guard hairs should be stiff and resist bending without being brittle (note that this feature can be inherited by the dog, or created with judicious use of a cheep hair styling spray). Coarse refers to the thickness of the individual hairs and coarse hairs tend to wear better than fine (thin) ones. Harshness refers to the feel of the coat and this is mostly related to the microscopic surface texture of the individual hairs. There are two basic types ~.

have been worn thin in consequence. To determine the effects of wear examine the skin itself and if the skin is clear and has none of the nicks, scrapes and scratches that result from field work, the dog's coat isn't worn, it's just plain thin. Remember to use your hands as well as your eyes because the dog's skin color can mask the thinness of a coat. The length of the coat is also a matter of breed standard and personal preference but the outer guard hairs should be about twice the length of the undercoat hairs and both types of hairs should be evenly distributed. This is not always the case and in many versatile breeds the different kinds of hair have different colors and in some dogs patches of a color can consist entirely of one kind of hair. In wirehaired breeds light tan to fawn colored patches of hair are not favored because they are often entirely composed of long, soft guard hairs. This relationship between hair color and texture is often the basis for color preferences expressed by experienced dog men. They aren't picky about color, per se, but they are well aware of what those colors mean in terms of coat durability and the protection it affords the dog.

The water adhering to the dog's coat changes the optical properties of the hairs and it's easier to visually judge the density of the coat when it's wet. (You can see more skin on a wet dog than a dry one.) The water also provides information on the activity of the sebaceous gland since an oily coat sheds water rapidly and dries quickly, whereas, a dog with a dry (non-oily) coat gets thoroughly wet and dries out much more slowly. When the dog is immersed in the water the texture and density of the coat has little measurable effect on the dog's body temperature, cold water is cold water and anything short of a wet suit is only marginal protection against the cold. An oily coat sheds dirt and moisture, but its most valuable feature is the fact that it doesn't absorb much water. This means that a hunting dog, with a good coat can swim to retrieve a duck in cold weather and then

restore its body temperature rapidly with a minimum of exercise. A dog with a dry coat will get soaked and chilled rapidly and will have to shiver to restore its body temperature. This takes a lot of energy and tires the dog quickly. The dog with a good oily coat will emerge from the water, shake and rid itself of most of the mud and water, and in a few minutes he will again be a pleasant companion in a canoe or duck blind. The dog with a dry coat (not oily) will also shake, but he will stay wet and muddy long enough to make him a real nuisance in the blind. The quality of your dog's coat has a of practical value in terms of your own personal comfort and convenience.

Harsh hairs are probably preferred in both wirehaired and shorthaired breeds, although not in the flat coated breeds, and the hairs with a textured surface are preferred to those that are just curly. For the wirehaired versatile breeds, the harsh hairs are preferred in the outer coat, as well as in the undercoat, because they are not prone to matting and tangling and are highly durable. There is a simple test to distinguish between a good wirehaired coat (coarse, stiff and harsh hairs) and poor wirehaired coat (soft, fine and smooth surfaced hairs) ... grab a few burdocks (or other variety of clinging seed pod) and rub them on the dog. Wirehairs with a good coat are easy to clean, the seed pods will brush off easily no matter how dense and long the coat, while the seed pods will cling and embed themselves in a poor coat and will have to be combed or picked out. Why do NAVHDAjudges examine a wet, and usually muddy, dog? The task is the least pleasant part of the test for a

SEA-TAC GWPC FIELD TRIAL submitted by Laura Reeves Our annual field trial was held March 22-23 at Scatter Creek in Rochester, Wash. We drew more than 100 entries for seven stakes. The Open All-Age stake was cancelled. The weather was superlative, with sunshine and mild temperatures Considering the weekend before brought snow to the Northwest and previoustrials have endured monsoons, windstorms and other weather crises, wethanked the weather gods for looking out for us this time. Although the numbers were small for our Sweepstakes, the quality of these youngsters showed that the breeders were doing something right. Standard writers are usually pretty clever fellows. The language of the Standards can be most subtle. It often carries an impact that is reminiscent of Teddy Roosevelt's "soft voice and big stick." The German Wirehaired Standard is an example of the velvet glove approach to the delicate question of "altering" dogs to fit the requirements of the Standard. Those who wrote the GWP breed Standard have drawn our attention to the "tell-tale" qualities of the Wire's head coat. An evaluation of Wire coat can almost begin and end with the dog's head, since it is here that the quality and quantity of coat throughout the entire body will be announced. By restricting exhibitors to a "naturally short and close fitting coat on the dog's skull," the writers have denied manmade changes and called upon exhibitors to "show it like it is." Very young Wirehairs may have almost slick heads and ears like shorthairs. Their short whiskers and eyebrows adorn the face which, if properly close coated, will not have excessive hair anywhere. Dogs that have soft coat on the top of the skull or excessive whiskers on the cheek areas will almost always have some excessive of soft coat problem. The more coat on the head, the more coat texture or quantity problems we can expect. A "soft" head coat that requires stripping to look neat and "close-fitting" will usually be accompanied by excessive whiskering and length of body coat. We may find density of coat if the head coat is heavy and long, but we may find length and "open" coats if the head coat is long and whispy. These head coats are not close in any way. Not only are they too long, they are too open. Dogs with these untidy heads seldom have good body coats, have open chest coats, and excessive length that hides the outline of the dog if not stripped off. While we should expect a good body coat on a dog with a short, close-fitting head coat and moderate whiskering, we should not be lulled into thinking that any dog with a close head coat will have a proper body coat. There is a distinctive difference between a correct "close-fitting, naturally short" head coat and a smooth, sleek head coat. The "sleek" head will usually be accompanied by a sleek ear. The head and ears will feel very smooth and shorthaired-like. The examiner's hand will slide over the head and ears and feel no "texture", only a slick, smoothness. The body coat will have the same sleekness. It may be thick and flat-lying. it may not hide the outline of the dog or have frilly embellishments, but it will probably not have the "harsh" texture called for in the Standard. While the coat on a dog with a slick head and ears may not be the correct texture called for in the Standard, it will be a more protective coat than long, open coats if it is thick enough. Puppies with sleek heads and ears, and adequate whiskering and eyebrows will most likely not have too sleek an adult body coat. If however, the whiskering and eyebrows are not adequate by one year, the body coat may never be dense enough or hard enough, or perhaps, long enough; The most desirable head coat will not only be short, it will be dense (close fitting). The examiner will be aware of a "texture"

against his finger tips. The ears of the 90g will be adequately covered but the ear fringe and covering will not be so long that they overhang the ear edges more than a fraction. Excessive hair in or on the ear tends to gather debris and carry unwanted objects to the ear canal. The correct ear coat is close-fitting and never long or spaniel-like. Whenever we see dogs with magnificent facial furnishings, or beautiful "frills" hanging from the chest or adorning their legs, we can almost be certain that these dogs have un typical coats, even though they may appear of proper length. The proper Wirehaired coat cannot have profuse whiskering or long furnishings, because they do not grow on a dog with a correct coat. They only grow on dogs with too long a coat and, most likely, too soft a coat. If we take the Standard literally, every Wirehaired that walks into a show ring will have his head natural...unchanged by man. Knowledgeable judges would have little difficulty selecting typical specimens, however cleverly doggy coats are trimmed. While heads can be carefully groomed to hide Nature's errors, a knowledgeable evaluator should have little difficulty finding the "typical dogs." While the promotion of the dictates of the Standard may not be popular with those who would prefer not to show "au natural," there is much to be said for the encouragement of anything that would bring typical specimens to the attention of the public. An "honest" dog, in any acceptable color, is a credit to his breed and, certainly an asset that should be monopolized upon. It is the "typical" specimen that can perpetuate his coveted qualities. A dog can only pass on what he is, not what man has made him appear to be. Vive la difference!

CODE OF ETHICS The members of the GWPCA are devoted to the continued preservation, protection and improvement of the German Wirehaired Pointer. This Code provides guidelines for ethical practices and care, and seeks to promote good sportsmanship. RECORDS: GWPCA members will maintain complete and accurate records for each dog and litter. BREEDING: GWPCA members will evaluate any dog or bitch used for breeding, using the criteria set forth by the breed standard. Only those dogs free of recognized genetic defects shall be used in a breeding program. Breeders will be selective with respect to the physical and mental soundness, health, temperament, and natural hunting ability of the dog or bitch. CARE AND TRANSFER
OF DOGS:
No puppies or adult dogs shall be bred, sold or consigned to pet shops or other commercial enterprises. Proper care shall be provided for bitch and puppies. Puppies shall be kept until seven weeks of age. All prospective buyers should be carefully screened to assure that puppies have a safe, loving and stimulating home.
