This is the last Local Barks column I will be editing ...no, that doesn't mean that this part of the Wire-News will be ending .... it only means that there is a new editor for this area. Just as I took over from Barb Hein when her plate was full, there has been a need for someone else to help "clear my plate". The new Editor of the "Local Barks" is Laura Reeves. Laura has spent several years as a newspaper reporter, a couple more in corporate marketing, and, most recently as a private marketinglPR consultant and free lance writer. She is also Editor of the Sea-Tac GWP Club newsletter. In between doing all this, she is a dog show handler (she serves as a liaison to the Judges Education Committee) and she participates in Hunting Tests, ~AVHDA (she's also helping with the Versatility Committee) and Obedience. She is a breeder as well (Scotia Kennels). So, all you newsletter editors out there in Wirehair-land, please add Laura to your mailing list. Another new editor and another new look to their newsletter.. ..chock full of good news. New officers for the year are: President - Tari Nestrud; Vice-President - Rhonda Amundson; Secretary - Liz Barrett-Dixon; Treasurer - Sue Mueller.(Do you think that Liz will ever be known just as "Liz Dixon"?) Get well wishes to Sue Mueller ...she has had correcti ve surgery for a detached retina and we've heard the eye is healing well. ...we all wish her well. The double-edged sword has taken a swing at Kim Harris and Charles Moreman .... on theupside these two were married at the Nationals (a first) and we wish them well...also on the upside ...their RUWYRD MVP Shortstop Ivan finished his bench title by going WD for a 5 point major at the Club's Specialty. The down-side of that sword got them when their recently finished Ch Maestro's Gretchen was killed while being chased by an errant Dalmatian. Tari Nestrud's ROD I won her first broke dog stake at a GordonSetter trial. She was first in OGD and third in OLGD. RYDER, owned and handled by Ellen Manns took a third in the Derby at the same trial. And MO, owned by the Dixon's, won two Derby stakes. In May and June, the Club is having a Field Trial and Hunting Test, respectively. And plans have begun for the Club hosting the 1999 Nationals!

He also took the Breed at the Fort Detroit Specialty in November. ...(must have been a "tune-up" for Harry). The Club is putting a lot of the final touches on the upcoming Nationals. Most of the "grunt" work is done and the ducks are lining up ....Judy Cheshire is the Specialty Show Chair, while Bernee Brawn holds the seat for the Field Trial, and Mal Decker is Hunt Test Chairman. Regina Schwabe is in charge of the Agility match. Club members have been busy in the Field as well as the show ring., see the report on the spring trial in this issue. Judy Cheshire's and the late Jean Griggs' National Specialty Winner, Ch ADPC Suthrn Breeze, JH (Breeza), continues her winning ways with a Group Three, three Goup Ones and a Best in Show! Leslie and Jerry Clark's Ch Side By Side's Bee 0' Shadra has been one busy girL.finishing her Companion Dog title and her Junior Hunter Title. Jon Prescott's Schnaps got a perfect score of 204 in NAVHDA Utility and was awarded a Prize I. The club will hold a supported entry with Chester Valley KC in May and a Hunting Test a few weeks later.

Club members have been trying to stay afloat by having their canoes and paddles at the ready, escape vehicles pointed downhill, and life vests for their woofies! Only kidding on part of this (I don't know about the others, but MY motorhome IS pointed downhill, just in case we need to swim for it...). The rain has been unrelenting ....49 storms since the season began, more than double the normal amount of rain with two more months to go .... Two more members GWP's have attained their Master Hunter titles: Marylou Linge's Weidenhugel Whistle v Jersey (Whistle) and Jack Underwood's Dutch Von Ostrriesland (Dutch). While Joan Payton's black/roan bitch Payton's Hot Cup 0' Java, JH, CD, CGC (Java) has earned her Companion Dog Excellent title. Java was High in Trial dog at the Nationals. Other club members have been busily showing and field trialing. The local hunting test scene has been pretty skimpy of late. Upcoming on the club events schedule are the annual Spring Field Trial, and the Hunting Test was rescheduled for April. The Club Specialty will be held at the tail end of May.

Dear GWPCA Member, The National Nominating Committee comprised of Rocky Gilleard, Chair, (406) 693-2381, Judy Cheshire, (516) 671-3564, Serena Dillingham (816) 747-2040, EllenManns (715) 426-9949 and Barb Tucker (517) 522-5048 are looking for input from the general membership of the GWPCA. The position of President, currently held by Bill Richardson will be available. Bill has served two terms and according to GWPCA By-Laws, that is all he can serve. The position of Treasurer, currently held by Linda Michaelis, is up for election. Linda has expressed a desire to retain this position. The position of Midwest Director, currently held by Liz Barrett-Dixon is also up for election. Liz has expressed a desire to retain this postion. Any or all nominees must come from an area other than the west. Following is Article V, Sections 3 and 4 of the GWPCA By-Laws which pertain to the nomination and election of Officers and Directors to the GWPCA: SECTION 3. The election of Officers. Directors (and Delegate to the American Kennel Club who may, but need not be, a Director of officer of the club) shall be conducted by ballot. Ballots to be valid must be cast by mail postmarked prior to November 15in each year. Ballots shall be counted by an independent professional firm as designated by the Board of Directors and the results announced not later than November 2S in each year. If any nominee-elect is unable to serve for any reason, such nominee-elect shall resign and the vacancy so created shall be filled by the new Board of Directors in the manner provided by Article IV, Section 3. SECTION 4. Nominations. No person may be a candidate in a Club election who has not been nominated in accordance with these ByLaws. a nominating Committee shall be chosen by the Board of Directors before July 1 in each year. The committee shall consist of five members in good standing, no more than one of which shall be a member of the current board of Directors. The Board shall name a chairman for the Committee. the Nominating Committee may conduct its business by mail. A. The Nominating Committee shall nominate from among the members of the Club in good standing who are residents ofthe United States of America, one candidate for each office and for the Delegate of The American Kennel Club and shall procure the acceptance of each nominee so chosen. A candidate for Regional Director must reside in the region he will represent. The committee shall then submit its slate of candidates to the Secretary before August I who shall mail the list to each member of the Club not later than August I S in each year so that additional nominations may be made by the members if they so desire. B. Additional nominations may be made by written petition addressed to the Secretary and received at his regular address not later than September 1S in each year, signed by fi ve members and accompanied by the written acceptance of each such additional nominee signifying his willingness to be a candidate. C. If no valid additional nominations or received by the secretary on or before September IS, the Nomination Committee's slate shall be declared elected and no balloting will be required. D. If one or more valid additional nominations are received by the Secretary on or before September 1S, he shall, on or before October 1, mail to each member in good standing a ballot listing all of the nominees for each position in alphabetical order. so thatth~ balta! may remain secret, each shall be marked by the voter and sealed in a blank envelope which in turn is placed in a second envelope bearing the name of the voter. The inspectors of election shall check the returns against the list of members in good standing prior to removing the blank envelopes and shall certify the eligibility of the voters as well as the results of the voting. E. Nominations cannot be made at the annual meeting or in any manner other than as provided as above. F. No more than two officers shall be elected from the same region. Regional Directors shall be not considered offic~rs.

This year some changes have been made to accommodate our increasing membership. Rhonda Amundson has stepped in as Membership Chairman. She is maintaining the current membership roster and is responsible for the mailing labels used on the Wire News as well as dues reminders, thank you cards and a yearly roster. All dues payments should continue to be sent to me so I can update my records and forward the information to Rhonda. Her help in this area will allow me to devote more of my time to the financial reporting and analysis. The current cash on hand as of 12/31/97 is $12,847.31 with $566.50 of this dedicated to the rescue fund for this year. This represents an increase of $3228.29 for the year. The savings account balance is $12,771.78 and the checking account balance is $73.53. One are of improvement this year is the Wire new advertising income vs. expense. This year 53% of the cost of publishing and mailing the Wire News has been paid for through your advertising dollars. (Last years figure was 25%). PLEASE CONTINUE TO ADVERTISE!! Dues income also showed an increase from $7765 in 1996 to $8953 this year. Although much of this increase has been invested in order to acquire new members, it looks as though our own advertising is beginning to pay off. First of all, I will tell those of you that I have never met, a little about myself. I have had wires since 1990. I got roped into this whole game in 1989 when I wrangled horses at the GWPCA National Events in Albert Lea, MN (my hometown). And did I ever say Thanks Liz and Shannon? My husband, Brian, and I own 4 GWP's and have finally agreed on Brillow Kennels for "our name". Ansel, our oldest, is 8 years old and needs retrieving points to finish his FC/AFC. He has his bench title. Ansel and Willy have both passed their water tests. Wilily is 3 years old and has a major in the conformation ring and a leg towards his Senior Hunter title. Dash is I 1/2 years old and has proven to be a handful. She has field trial placements in puppy and derby stakes. Ally is 10 months old and an offspring of Ansel. She is so much like "Daddy" it's scary!! Her show debut was January 9, 1998, at the Twin Cities German Wirehaired Pointer Club Specialty. She went Best of Opposite Sex in Sweepstakes! She has done a fair amount of pheasant hunting, pointing and retrieving and shows promise. I am writing a little "article" for the WIRE NEWS today to help you all understand what I do. My first and foremost responsibility is to respond to the dozens of inquiries each month that arrive at my house. I also have several forwarded to me from both Karen Nelsen, GWPCA Secretary and Linda Michaelis, GWPCA Treasurer. What kind of inquiries do I receive? Well, most are pretty simple and consist of getting the reed booklet , a complimentary copy of the lRE l\bWS and a membership application mailed out. I try to personalize each letter although I do use a form letter on occasion. Many

of the requests are for "any information that will help me research the breed ..." or "there is so little available out there .." in which case I recommend the books; The German Pointer (Shorthaired and Wirehaired) by Anna Katherine Nicholas ( this book is out of print but is still available in some libraries), The German Wirehaired Pointer Today by GWPCA member, Sharon Pinkerton, and Hunter-Pointer-Retriever; The Continental Gundog, Edited by Tony Jackson. I also recommend The Pointing Dog Journal (PDJ) as a periodical. To get a subscription you can call customer service at 1-800-333-7646. Mr. Chuck Johnson, who writes for PDJ, owns wirehairs and has a catalog book business called, Wilderness Adventures in which a person can find several reference books for both breed comparison and training. You can call for a catalog at 1-800925-3339. If any members have any other favorite reading material that I should be recommending, by all means, drop me a line!!! Occasionally, I receive letters from children who are doing projects/reports for school and I have gotten one from an author who is doing a book on purebred dogs. I've even heard from people that have owned wires for decades and never knew that we existed!! Our ads were well worth the money, I believe.

At the meeting held with the 97 Nationals, the BOD had decided to change the requirements for the National Championship and the National Amateur Championship. Upon further consideration, and with input from the membership it has been decided that this change may have been in haste. The Field Advisory Committee shall be asked to look at the requirements and offer suggestions for any future changes. Therefore, the entry requirements for the 1998 GWPCA National Championships shaH remain as: Open to all GWP's six months and over who have received a first placement in an Open or Amateur Walking Derby stake or first place in the GWPCA Futurity or has placed first, second, third or fourth in any Open or Amateur Gun Dog or All- Age stake at a recognized AKC liscensed or member field trial.

1998 NAVHDA INVITATIONAL One idea that I could use some input on ....! would like to do a "New Member Statistics" type of thing for future newsletters-what do you think? It would just be a way of "introducing" the people who join. Maybe you would find someone new in your area with common interests and goals for their dogs that you could help or find a new training buddy! ! On September 2-7 1998, the Minnesota Chapter of NAVHDA will sponsor the 1998 NA VHDA Invitational which will be run in the Twin Cities area. This is a "by invitation only" event that is held once every two years. The invited dogs must have performed to a high level of competence in the NAVHDA Utility test, demonstrating the full range of a true versatile hunting dog. Many of the versatile breeds will be represented during the five day event.

There are 126 dogs qualified from all over the US and Canada. During this event, the dogs will be judges according to set standards developed by NAVHDA over the past thirty years The events include water work, blind retrieves and field brace work. GENERAL APPEARANCE: The German Wirehaired Pointer is a well muscled, medium sized dog of distinctive appearance. Balanced in size and sturdily built, the breed's most distinguishing characteristics are its weatherresistant, wire-like coat and its facial furnishings. Typically pointer in character and style, the German Wirehaired Pointer is an intelligent, energetic and determined hunter. SIZE, PROPORTION, SUBSTANCE: The height of males should be from 24-26 inches at the withers. Bitches are smaller but not under 22 inches. To insure the working quality of the breed is maintained, dogs that are either over or under the specified height must be severly penalized. The body is a little longer than it is high, as ten is to nine. The German Wirehaired Pointer is a versatile hunter built for agility and endurance in the field. Correct size and balance are essential to high performance. HEAD: The head is moderately long. Eyes are brown, medium in size, oval in contour, bright and clear and overhung with medium length eyebrows. Yel'ow eyes are not desirable. The ears are rounded but not too broad and hang close to the head. The skull is broad and the occipital bone not too prominent. The stop is medium. The muzzle is fairly long with nasal bone straight, broad, and parallet to the top of the skull. The nose is dark brown with nostrils wide open. A spotted or flesh colored nose is to be penalized. The lips are a trifle pendulous but close to the jaw and bearded. The jaws are strong with a full complement of evenly set and properly intermeshing teeth. The incisors meet in a true scissors bite. NEe K, TOP LI N E AND BOD Y: The neck is of medium length, slightly arched and devoid of dewlap. The entire back line showing a perceptible slope down from withers to croup. The skin throughout is notably tight to the body. The chest is deep and capacious with ribs well sprung. The tuck-up is apparent. The back is short, straight and strong. Loins are taut and slender. Hips are broad with the croup nicely rounded. The tail is set high, carried at or above the horizontal when the dog is alert. The tail is docked to approximately two-fifths of its original length. FOREQUARTERS: The shoulders are well laid back. The forelegs are straight with elbows close. Leg bones are flat rather than round, and strong, but not so heavy or coarse as to militate against the dog's natural agility. Dewclaws are generally removed. Round in outline, the feet are webbed, high arched with toes close, pads thick and hard, and nails strong and quite heavy. HINDQUARTERS: The angulation of the hindquarters balances that of the forequarters. The thighs are strong and muscular. The hind legs are moderatly angulated at the stifle and hock, and, as viewed from behind, parallel to each other. Dewclaws are generally removed from the hind feet, as in front.

HOW TO ENJOY A TWO-DOG NIGHT -- in bed I will address myself mostly to the rules for sleeping with two dogs. #For the few who have already mastered this technique, I will later add a c*t, although I urge beginners to leave the c*t out. To achieve any sort of success, certain arbitrary conditions must be assumed. The first condition is that you must have a king-sized bed. There is no point in lying down in anything smaller. The second deals with the weight of the dog. While the size or the breed of dog is not important (people who sleep with dogs know that before the night is over everybody collects into a pile), the weight of the dogs may be important. Very thin dogs, for example, are lumpier. I have selected the two-dog minimum because, as we shall see, it is the only way to stay in bed at all. The key word here is LEVERAGE. Dogs spend the night pressed tightly against their human bedfellows, but no two dogs ever sleep on the same side. This is, in part, an expression of the "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" principle. It is also to create leverage. #Because the human being is always in the middle, held tightly in place by the dogs and by a blanket (which the dogs are sleeping on top of), restlessness and recurring cramps are difficult to handle. Here is the first important tip: When you first lie down, AND BEFORE THE DOGS SETTLE AGAINST EACH SIDE OF YOU, spread your legs three inches apart. Stiffen and hold out NO MATTER HOW GREATTHE PRESSURE! When the time comes to turn over, bring the legs together quickly under the now slightly slackened blanket and revolve BEFORE THE DOGS WAKE UP. As soon as you have assumed a new position, allow for those crucial three inches again; otherwise, you're a mummy for the rest of the night. NEVER SPREAD THE LEGS MORE THAN THREE INCHES! A dog's favorite place to sleep is in the

hollow created by legs too widely spread, and once settled, he and you are frozen into position until morning. #(There is a way out of this trap, but it is difficult to describe without slides). Dogs who prefer to sleep on their backs must be given space three times the height of the dog at the shoulder. Dogs who like pillows may be accommodated if you sleep on your side with the legs scissored so that each dog has an ankle for a chin rest. Above all, BEWARE OF CURLING! When the curl is reversed, both dogs are dislocated, resulting in low growls on both sides of you. ADDING

A C*T

When you are ready to add a c*t, position is all important. All c*ts= prefer to sleep in hollows, but NO C*T will sleep on the same side as a dog. (Remember, you have only two sides). You must therefore become a Triangle! Do this by assuming a horizontal diver's crouch, thereby creating not only three more-or-Iess exclusive sides but two hollows as well. With one dog at your front, and the other against your back, the c*t can curl into the hollow at the back of your bent knees, separated from both dogs. All will then sleep soundly. This entire technique still needs a lot of refinement. A method that deals with early morning scratching needs to be developed, and the problem of pretending to sleep while being closely scrutinized by various animals needs to be solved. Tracy Landauer

TOP PRODUCERS Compiled by Gail Richardson The object of doing an in depth study on a subject is to see what patterns may be present. It would stand to reason that show dogs produce show dogs and the same would be true of field dogs. But which dogs, or lines, produce animals that are above average in both areas? Only by comparing the production records of members within the study may conclusions be drawn. There are around 1500 GWP's registered annually. Of that number the vast majority are personl gun dogs and companions. We are interested in those dogs that form the backbone of the breeding population. These dogs may not have been the #1 ranked show dog or field dog of their day, but you can bet they weren't accidents. Someone put time and thought into their performance record, conformation and pedigree. Over a period of years certain breeders are able to be recognized by their "type" dog. Even years after they have bred their last litter, their "type" continues to be a part of the pupulation. In the last twelve years we have had some outstanding sires and dams. Most are no longer with us, but they been instrumental in shaping the future. DC Cascade Rogue MH is the only dog in the last 12 years to appear in all three Top Producing Categories, Show, Field Trial and Hunt Test. A Happy Ending to a Sad Story By: Karen Nelsen His name is Bo. He's nine years old and was in the Idaho Humane Society Shelter. He was scheduled to be euthanized, but something about him, his personality perhaps, attracted the attention of one ofthe Shelter's employees, Deb. She personally saved him from the needle that would have ended his days. She saw something and knew he would be a wonderful family pet. But who was going to adopt a nine year old dog with an eye infection? The great thing is that she recognized him as a German Wirehaired Pointer, and not a mixed breed, as so often happens. Along with a shelter volunteer, Sheila Ames, they contacted the National Club. Bo's story was put on the Rescue site of our website. Sheila acted as contact person, checking out potential families, making

phone calls ...a match was made! He was adopted by a family in South Carolina. Here's what they e-mailed to Sheila after he arrived at his new home . "Bo is really a great dog. He enjoyed a little snack of dog food at the airport, which he ate right out of my hand. He stayed quietly in his box all the way from the airport (2 1/2 hour drive). At first he wanted to sit in the back seat but there was so much路 traffic I was afraid he might get upset if we had to stop short. He stays on our inside back porch during the night and doesn't whine or bark. In fact, he very quiet and we've only heard him bark twice when he was outside. He stays in the back yard in the afternoon. He has a dozen tennis balls to choose from and walks through the house with one in his mouth at all times. We're keeping up with his eye medicine. Right now he's stretched out on a couch in the living room watching me write this. I told him I was writing to you (I think he said to send his love). He's been eating well. We give him dry food in the morning and dry and canned mix at night. We'll watch that he doesn't get too much and adjust the amount down one we get a feel for how much he really needs. We have quite a few dogs in the

neighborhhod and he has had a good time reading the "messages" on our property. I think he's pretty happy. He wags his tail all the time. Thanks so much. He seems like the perfect dog for us! Keeping dogs at home By Norma Bennett Woolf [Dog Owner's Guide; Electronic Edition: ]

Owner ignorance populates shelters with abandoned dogs and cats Introduction Three years ago, the Humane Society of the US initiated a "voluntary breeding moratorium" to urge dog breeders to stop producing puppies until all dogs in shelters were adopted to new homes."Until there are none, adopt one," the slogan said. Thoughtful and caring dog breeders were put on the defensive, pet stores were vilified, and all commercial kennels were lumped together as "puppy mills" no matter how they provided for their animals. A new study that examined the reasons dogs - about two million each year - are surrendered to animal shelters has shed new light on the problem. The main reasons dogs are surrendered is that owners fail to obedience train or have unrealistic expectations of their pet; the dogs at highest risk of surrender are those acquired at low or no cost, especially those that do not visit a veterinarian regularly. Gary Patronek VMD, PhD, one of the principle investigators on the study, presented the results at the NAIA ~rebred Rescue Symposium last March. The work was published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association on August I, and is corroborated in another study reported in the August 15 issue of the Journal.

Patronek and his Purdue University colleagues concluded that dog owners who pay more than $100 for a dog, take him to a veterinarian more than once a year, and participate in obedience classes are more likely to provide a long-term home for the animal. Veterinary care and obedience classes may reinforce the bonding of pet and owner, the researchers wrote " ... by allowing the owner to experience and appreciate the positive aspects of pet ownership such as companionship, affection, entertainment, and security without overreacting to or being distracted by disruptive or unwanted behavior." Their conclusions challenge the assertions of activists that breeders directly and indirectly produce an "overpopulation" of pets and provide testimony for early intervention through education, a solution that breeders, breed clubs, kennel clubs, and the American Kennel Club have promoted for years.

The numbers The research was done at the Humane Society of St. Joseph, Mishawaka, Indiana. The team compiled separate information for dogs and cats; they interviewed 380 people who surrendered their dogs for adoption and 905 owners who kept their animals. The control group was chosen

from a random sample of dog-owning St. Joseph County residents.

* Fifty-four percent of the dogs surrendered were six months to three years old and 15 percent were less than six months old. (The study included only acquired dogs, not surrendered litters.) * Fifty-one percent of dogs surrendered had been purchased for less than $100 from a breeder or private owner. Nearly nine percent from these private sources cost more than $100 ; 2.5 percent came from pet stores and 3.9 percent from litters produced in the home. * Nearly 20 percent of the surrendered dogs came from a shelter, andabout the same number were acquired as strays. * Nearly 41 percent of the surrendered dogs were obtained free from the previous owner. * Behavior problems occurring daily that contributed to surrender were: o o o o o o

* Dogs acquired between the ages of one and two years are at higher risk for abandonment than puppies, perhaps because they came to their new owners with established behavior problems. * Dogs that are adopted from a shelter are at relatively high risk of return, leading to the idea that behavior counseling programs at shelters should be evaluated to determine their effectiveness. * Dogs that spend most of their time separated from the family, either in crates or in the yard, are at greater risk. This discovery should warn obedience instructors, shelter staffs, and veterinarians who recommend he use of a crate that they must provide clear information on it proper use. * Dogs that visit the veterinarian more than once a year and those that attend obedience classes - the best places to get educationaal information on behavior - are more likely to remain in their original homes. Curiously, the discovery that increased veterinary visits can influence a dog's longevity in the home comes at a time when the trend is toward fewer visits, not more. Early rabies and parvovirus vaccination and sterilization can wrap up a puppy's regular visits by the age of four months - before owners get tired of chewing, barking, and other normal but exasperatin behaviors.

Conclusions * Purebred pets are at lower risk of surrender to shelters than mixed breeds, and dogs purchased for more than $100 ha ve the lowest risk factors of all. * Dogs less than two years old are at highest risk for abandonment especially if they are mixed breed, unneutered, live in a family with children, or require more care or attention than the owners expected when they obtained the animal.

"Such practices will compress preventive veterinary care for puppies into a shorter period and fewer visits, as has been reported in the United Kingdom, thus decreasing opportunities for client counseling by veterinarians during the period of greatest risk for relinquishment," the researchers concluded. "Although these results should not discourage prepubertal sterilization of dogs, they highlight the importance of maintaining and perhaps increasing the frequency of contact with clients during the dog's juvenile and early adult years." Try Just a Tap Jon Prescott

Getting my 3 * year old wire ready for her first UT test, I was somewhat dismayed this last spring when she decided she wasn't going to wait to be sent for the retrieve of the shot bird. I thought we had covered this n ground but had forgotten that my son and the neighborhood kids had spent the late winter getting their kicks watching Schnaps retrieve a Frisbee in the snow. I also had probably not been as consistent as possible during the last hunting season. Talking to an old friend, Don Smith, whose trained many a Wirehair over then past 30 years, he suggested I go back and repeat the steps of the retrieve training sequence starting at the training table, but this time incorporate a tap on the head with the "Fetch!!" command. I had remembered that Clyde Vetter, a well respected NAVHDA trainer had demonstrated this technique at a NAVHDA clinic and I decided to give it a try. Over several weeks in May, we retraced our steps, first on the training table, but every time I asked Schnaps to fetch, I gave her a light tap on the head. If she went without the tap or moved at all before being sent, I would "whoa" her, and then retrieve the object myself. I did this in all cases where she was being asked to retrieve any object and corrected her whether it was a dummy, a ball or a frozen bird. Before being sent for the duck search, I tapped her: before sending her through the decoys for a sight retrieve, I tapped her: before sending her for the retrieve of drag, I

tapped her. I even used it to release her out of her crate. The lesson being - if you don't feel me tap you, you don't go anywhere. Resist any tendency to release your dog without this tap. Use it consistently in every instance where you are releasing the dog or asking it to perform a chore away from you. Even if the dog is in thick cover and the bird is shot and down, fight your way to the dog and tap him with the "Fetch" command. The extra seconds he waits for you to arrive reinforces his steadiness. In addition, we repeated the stop to shot sequence as well as the stop to flush (thank goodness for homing pigeons! i). By June, she understood through the reinforcement of the stop to flush, shot, and the need for the tap that all thrown objects and shot birds would be retrieved only when I said so and that she must wait for the "tap". Hopefully, I now had a triple fail safe system in place, three events that would trigger steadiness on her part. The test went great!! She had six finds in 30 minutes and was perfectly steady. I even got a little cocky, strolling to her and tapping her lightly with a hushed "Fetch" command. All the birds came back to hand with Schnap's tail going a mile a minute. Thank you Don and Clyde. It works!! By the way, do a real thorough job on that stop to flush. If your dog has "big time desire", it may be the key to teaching your dog to honor. But, that's another subject. Usingthe Wind-by Mark Powell

The wind is a very important factor in your success in a field trial. Considering that the pointing breeds use airborne scents to find game, this should not be a surprise. How you handle your dog to take advantage of the wind (or in some cases, not let the wind be a disadvantage), can make the difference between a placement and a bust. Tio #1: Ride a brace before yours is up and scout the wind on the course. While the wind at the breakaway may be a consistent five mph breeze out of the north, due to the terrain on the course, it can swirling out of the south at 20 mph in the birdfield. The only way to find out how the wind is behaving all over the course is to ride it and check out the wind. Tio #2: When the course has the wind at its back, try to direct your dog to the front away from likely bird objectives. If you watch seasoned field trial dogs, they often race to the front when the wind is at their backs away from objectives, then work the objectives into the wind. There is a reason for this. Veteran field dogs know that they are at a disadvantage when the wind is at their backs. Most bumps and stop-to-flushes occur when the dog has the wind at it's back. If your dog works objectives with the wind at it's back, move it to the front as soon as possible. Tip #3: If your dog is working into the wind on a backcast, do not call it to the front until absolutely necessary. Hopefully, you will have good judges who can appreciate a dog that chooses to work into the wind. If not, you will have to forego the opportunities to find game when the wind is at your back. I have seen a lot of dogs in trials that were much smarter than the humans judging them. You have to be smart enough to determine what the judges are likely to think about a backcast into the wind. Tip #4: In the birdfield, work into the wind thoroughly, and race your dog to the downwind side of the birdfield. Spend as little time as possible working your dog with the wind. A zigzag pattern into the wind will cover more objectives to the dog's advantage. A quick return to the downwind end of the birdfield will maximize your dog's time working

into the wind and opportunities to find birds. Tip #5: Try to flush birds with the wind if you can.This may be tough to accomplish, especially if your dog is directly downwind of the bird (do not flush the bird into your dog, ever). But birds usually want to get out of trouble the fastest way possible, which will be with the wind. By having the bird get out of sight faster, you will also minimize the pressure on your dog. This will make a tougher shot for the gunners if you are in a retrieving trial, but a bird flushed into the wind will likely turn and go with it anyway. Tio #6: If the wind is very strong, keep your dog to the front unless there are objectives in lees. A "lee" is a sheltered area from the wind, such as the downwind side of a hill or treeline. When the wind is howling, the scent will likely be scattered, diffuse, and transient, making the situation perfect for stop-to-flushes and bumps. Only objectives in wind protected areas are likely to produce good finds. The wind can be a great ally in field trials, or can cause a stake to go void of placements. How you handle with the wind can make all the difference. Have fun and good luck at your next trial!

Anterior crossbite occurs when the canine and premolar teeth on both sides of the mouth occlude normally, but one or more of the lower incisors are positioned in front of the upper incisors. Anterior crossbite is the most common malocclusion, is not considered genetic or hereditary, and is correctable. If there is an anterior crossbite, there must be a condition termed posterior crossbite. Posterior crossbite occurs when one or more of the premolar lower jaw teeth overlap the upper jaw teeth. This is a rare condition that occurs in the larger nosed dog breeds.

What is really meant by the words: Overbite, open bite, overjet, level bite, overshot, underbite, anterior crossbite, wry bite, retained deciduous teeth, base narrow canines? Breeders, show judges, veterinarians, and others who want to express specific dental conditions in dogs and cats need to use the proper terms. This article will review commonly used and misused words to describe tooth alignment.

Anatomy

A wry mouth or wry bite occurs when one side of the jaw grows longer than the other. It is considered hereditary and difficult to correct.

Dogs normally have twenty-eight deciduous (primary or baby) teeth that erupt during the first six months of life. Most breeds have forty-two adult teeth. Cats have twenty-six deciduous and thirty adult teeth. There are four types of teeth. Incisors are the smaller teeth located between the canines on the upper and lower jaws. They are used for grasping food and help keep the tongue within the mouth.

Base narrow canines occur when the lower canine teeth protrude inward and can damage the upper palate. Often this condition is due to retained baby teeth and can usually be corrected through inclined planes used to push the teeth into normal occlusion.

Canines (also called cuspids or fang teeth) are located on the sides of the incisors and used to grasp food.

Premolars (bicuspids) are for shearing or cutting food and are located behind the canines. The molars are the last teeth in the mouth. They are used for grinding nourishment for entry into the esophagus.

Missing or Extra Teeth Dogs and cats are frequently born without the proper number of eeth. Extra (supernumerary) teeth can cause periodontal disease from o\'ercrowding. The American Kennel Club sets the standards concerning minimum number of teeth for each breed of dog that can be shown. Dental x-rays can be safely taken as early as ten weeks of age to evalu~e if the correct number of adult teeth will emerge. This is recommended as a part of the prepurchase examination in certain breeds. Csually missing teeth will not cause an eating problem.

Occlusion The way teeth align with each other is termed occlusion. Norlusion in most breeds consists of the upper (maxillary) incisors "...st o\'er!apping the lower (mandibular) incisors (scissor bite). The ~~ canine should be located equidistant between the last (lateral) od the upper canine tooth. Premolar tips of the lower jaw should =-_~ ;;erween the spaces of the upper jaw teeth. Flat faced breeds (Box~ S1:ih·Tw, and Lhasa Apso) normally do not have scissors bites.

We held our Hunt Test September 27 & 28th. We lucked out with beautiful weather, excellent judges and lots of help. Thanks to the following individuals for all their help before during and after the test- Hunt Test Committee: Bob Aardema, Ed Rygasiewicz, Par Ranker, Larry Ranker, Genevieve Capstaff, Glenn Kelly, Alexis and Brian Washa. Thanks to Brian Washa for serving as Captain of Guns coordinating gunners and making sure safety producers were followed. In addition to the people mentioned previously (who worked lessly all weekend) we had a lot of fine help from the following. Holmes, Gerry Benson, A Brady, Debi Rewerts, Pat Dunleavy, Dunleavy and Ray Scaccia. new members Angie & Steve Castro and Wells (who pitched right in line marshaling and scoring) ...

We also had excellent gunning and bird planting in the Master Senior field- Brian Washa, Guy Rezzardi, Denny Marano, Mark Provost, Mike Pickell, Tom Rayburn and Jim Savage (all crack shots- no complaints about gunning ..) The raffle was resurrected and we had some very generous donations - Seneca Hunt Club, Jeri & Guy Carnagey- GC Breeding, Hickory Grove Pheasant Hunt, Dog food, biscuits, grooming items, collars, leads and other miscellaneous items. Thanks to everybody who donated and participated. A number of club members had dogs entered in our test- Al Brady, Debi Rewerts, Steven Hass, Ray Scaccia and Denny Marano. We have to hand it to judges, mark reed, Bill Padovano and Jeff and Kathy Englesman for staying in the saddle all day long and judging all those dogs. Our net Test will be April 12

Ranger (Ch Liebenwaid's Idle Curiosity) is the first German Wirehaired Pointer I have ever owned, though I have admired the breed for a long time. He was bought as a puppy by my son and came to join my houseful of Golden Retrievers at the age of six months after my son and daughter-in-law decided he was too much dog for a city duplex. I love this boy! Ranger (now two years old) is cheerful, willing to do anything I ask him, well-behaved in the house, and easy to train. He is very loving and would like to be a cuddly guy; unfortunately, he is all angles and bones and wet beard, and, even when his nails are as short as they can be, a friendly paw on your knee feels a lot like being caresssed by a garden rake - so cuddling is a little hazardous. When he was eight months old, a friend who teaches obedience suggested I bring him to the beginner class graduation and try the "Canine Good Citizen" test. That afternoon, I spent twenty minutes teaching Ranger "Sit", "Down", and "Stay"; that evening he easily passed the CGC test! Outside, I never tire of watching his speed, agility, and grace. He can outrun the Goldens without even trying. He can leap any obstacle in his path (including dogs), he can change direction, spin, and jump seemingly in the same motion. I have never had a dog who moves as beautifully or who makes me laugh as often as Ranger does. Inside, its another story. Ranger can't walk through a room without chairs tipping over, magazines flying off tables, and rugs lying in heaps in the corner - and not little bathmat-size rugs either - 8 x 10 Orientals! He always acts sort of puzzled by the disaster in his path; his face says "I didn't do that, did IT' One morning after breakfast, the dogs were waiting at the mud room door to go out. As I squeezed through the mob to open the door, Ranger stepped in a dog dish, flipping it over. The loud clang it made on the tile floor startled him; he leaped several feet up and about four feet sideways, landing squarely on top of two bags of cans and bottles waiting to be recycled. Cans, bottles, noise, and dogs filled the small space. Ranger had his usual expression - "Huh? What happened? Did I do that? Sorry ..." The Goldens just sood by the door with their usual expressions - sort of the canine version of rolling the eyes upward. Ranger recently spent several months in the east with Karen Friederichsen and Sam Mammano, finishing his conformation championship (with four majors) on June first in Michigan, at the Monroe Kennel Club Show. I am so glad to have him home again. We had started both obedience and agility work before he left and will now get back to it. He's a wonderrful boy, and I count myself lucky that he came to live with me.

PennHIP Detailed below is the distraction index (01) laxity profile for the German Wirehaired Pointer. PennHIP does not make specific breeding recommendations. Selection of sire and dam for mating is the decision of the breeder. As a minimum breeding criterion, we propose that breeding stock be selected from the population of dogs having hip laxity in the tightest half of the breed (less than the median DI). Higher selection pressuire (i.e. lower 01 of breeding stock) equates to more rapid expected genetic change per generation. In other words, mating tight hipped dogs to other tight hipped dogs will bring about the greatest expected change. By implementing selection based on hip laxity, our evidence indicates that the breed average DI over the years will move toward tighter hip configuration meaning lower susceptibility to hip dysplasia. The PennHIP database accounts for this response to selection pressure. Therefore, the average laxity and range of laxity for a particular breed will change over time. Number of Dogs
