INTRODUCTION 12 months ago Mark Stodart as our then Chair started with – Well what a year that was!! and this year I want to start with Well what a year 2022 will be!! The year started once again in lockdown with all the challenges of home working and an uncertain future, we all had difficult decisions to make on how 2021 would look for us, lessons learnt in 2020 allowed some of our members to dare to plan and for those that did and were lucky enough to fall at the right time of the year were able to hold at least a version of their shows. Hopefully this gives us all the inspiration and the confidence to strive to a successful show season in 2022, albeit another different year for us all. Your Council have already agreed to maintain fees at 50% for the coming year just another way we are trying to support our members during a challenging time. Over the last 12 months your Council have worked hard to gain greater representation within Government, I’m pleased to say Paul and I finally gained traction within DCMS getting a meeting with Nigel Huddleston MP, Minister for Sport, Tourism, Heritage and Civil Society, we now have a level of confidence that we have a sympathetic ear within Government. We cannot thank Theresa Villiers MP, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Events enough for helping to bring the meeting to fruition, another friend for the ASAO within Government. I wish I could be more positive with regards DEFRA but please be assured we are still striving to get through to them on many levels. A major challenge appearing at the latter end of 2021 was the change of duty and use of red diesel for our membership, we finally managed to speak directly to representatives within the Treasury, and from this, we were asked to present further evidence during the first weeks of 2022. We hope to utilise this in our argument to protect the industry from yet another devastating financial blow, unfortunately this is proving a real challenge but we will not give up without a good fight. Thanks to our Patron, Her Royal Highness the Countess of Wessex for her attendance at the AGM and for conducting 2 visits this year, the first to Royal Ulster and the second to the Westmorland Show where she presented our immediate past chair with a crystal bowl to recognise all his hard work for us all during his extended tenure of 2018, 19 and 20, a very challenging time to be the chair of any organisation. Conference was a great success again, albeit different to the usual format. We were able to bring the industry together again, speakers covered all aspects of the show world lending their experiences for us all to hear. Support from the tradestands were as strong as ever and I look forward to seeing you all at the end of the year up at the Royal Highland Conference in November. This year’s training day will be as important as ever. The sessions will look at the sustainability of our events and organisations, 6
INTRODUCTION considering both the survival of our shows in an environment where cost is constantly going up and demands on our time is ever increasing, whilst as organisations we have a duty to look to the future and the environment. We need to consider how we can make our events serve our future generations better, our actions, our instruction to contractors, our inspiration to the general public and the opportunity our events lend to share good practise to our allied agri businesses are all vital. Our team has continued to deliver during another difficult year, I must thank Paul and James for all their hard work over the last 12 months both going beyond our expectations. Paul’s constant cajoling of Government departments whilst representing us on many trade bodies and James always being ready to create and deliver great artwork, deliver new technological advances for us to use whilst chasing the invoices. They have always been on hand to answer questions when needed by the membership and definitely have the ASAO always front and centre in their thoughts. Saying all this it is with much sadness that I have to say we will soon be losing James as Membership Secretary, time is that he now needs to focus more on his show and showground although I’m sure this is not the last we have seen of him! We are looking at new initiatives and how we can continue to deliver what you need. Now more than ever we need to work together, the monthly catch-up meetings are vital and I urge all to attend as they are a superb source of ideas, inspiration and an opportunity to air concerns and worries with the knowledge that a member of our wider family will have very likely already experienced them or something similar. Keep talking and keep communicating with friends in the industry, together we are stronger and can overcome many things and most importantly I wish you all a very successful show season! David Tite, ASAO Chairman
