NOEA, established in 1979, is the only trade association specialising in the Outdoor Events Industry.

It is able to connect you to some 400 Members covering Local Authorities, Festival and Event Organisers, Universities/Students, Entertainment Agencies, Promoters, Venues and Suppliers of Equipment and Services together with Practitioners generally in the World of Outdoor Events.

NOEA’s policy to educate, share problems and enhance professionalism and business opportunities clearly works. The regional workshops/conferences and Annual Convention & Award Celebration Evenings offer opportunities to find out about the latest developments – to learn about topical issues such as the Licensing Act, Disability Discrimination Act, Security Industry Authority etc, Training Event Managers, working on the British Standard for the Sustainability of Event Management, UKEVENTS, The Genesis Initiative, to debate issues, share information, network, meet new business contacts, renew old friendships and have some fun.

NOEA offers a wide range of opportunities that can lead to enhanced business relationships and, ultimately, greater success, it is worth the time and effort by joining NOEA. Networking opportunities and the chance to influence legislation are two of the greatest benefits of NOEA membership. However, to benefit from this, members must participate and be active within the association. Paying annual dues isn’t enough to reap the benefits of NOEA. Looking forward to 2023 as an association …

I was thinking the other day about the first time my name was associated with President of the National Outdoor Events Association, and how that felt. It was certainly flattering, the chance to play a major role in the direction of the industry’s primary association. It was a big responsibility, but again, this is something I’ve always felt comfortable with. I was aware of the time commitment, but honestly, I was pretty sure, surrounded as I was with quality people, it really wouldn’t impinge too much on my daily life. So, why not, a great opportunity.

At the same time as I was accepting the Presidency, Covid-19 was making its way out of China and within months would be shutting down the UK and the UK events industry. From that moment on I am happy to claim, I have had the most extraordinary Presidency in our association’s 40+ years!

It’s 2023 now and I’m just about able to put the pandemic behind me despite the many hang overs that the industry still faces, and that will continue to plague us over the next five years. I said two years ago that all I wished for was to be back, standing in a field, with my colleagues across the events industry. Last year I was able to. This coming year, I’ll be able to do so again, and this gives me immense pleasure.

Equally, as an association, NOEA has grown in profile and stature; we’ve reached more people and affected more outcomes for the industry than ever before. I wonder why that is, and as much as I’d like to put it down to inspired leadership and the undoubted qualities of the people in and around NOEA, I think it’s also important to lay credit where it is due to our members.

Every time we have been asked for insight, research, or commentary, on a myriad of different issues, we reach out to our members, and they come up with the goods. They are free with opinion, solution, and give their time to help others in similar positions. It makes us a credible partner to both business and government.

Behind the scenes, our Chief Executive, Susan Tanner (with a bit of help from me!) has sat on many governmental and non-governmental committees, working tirelessly on how to better the events industry, keeping both the industry and NOEA at the forefront with government, a position we certainly hadn’t achieved pre Covid!

In March 2022, we came up with the idea of the BVEP reinventing itself to become an overall umbrella association representing all fractions of the event industry, something we’ve never had before. In November they relaunched as ‘UK EVENTS’ with Susan Tanner one of their Vice -Chair’s, and the outdoor events working group headed by Nick Morgan working to promote and develop our industry on a national level.

The cost-of-living crisis and the fall out from Covid still affect our members and we, as an association, are fighting daily for help and assistance for the industry and will continue to do so. This Yearbook is full of those members. Their quality is underscored by the checks and balances we put in place before businesses are allowed to become members, and because of this they make up a compendium of some of the best, most credible, and reliable businesses in the UK industry.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank them all, not just for their contributions to NOEA becoming a more powerful association. But for their continual support as members of it.

I’d encourage any event organiser, established or new, to use this Yearbook as your first port of call in building a successful, reliable, and stable event.

I would also like to thank everyone wo attended our Convention & Awards Dinner in November, the first live event we have had in three years. It was a great day and evening, highlighting the best of NOEA and the industry. I also would like to thank the members of the General Council for their support and friendship over the last 12 months, plus of course Susan Tanner, who never seems to stop working on behalf of NOEA but who without, we would not be the leading association in the UK that we are.

VICE PRESIDENTS – ALYSHA SARGENT AND ANDREW MCQUILLAN

Hi All Welcome to the 2023 Yearbook.

What a year 2022 was. Events were certainly back with a bang. Our industry was in demand like never before. There was the obvious need from audiences to get back to enjoying events, but also a reminder of the value of events and the contribution they make to the economy. At all the events I was fortunate to be involved in, everyone I spoke to said the same thing - just how busy they all are. We have certainly bounced back, and we were able to meet the demands placed on us.

What I personally found to be one of the most challenging aspects of 2022 was the extremes in weather conditions. Over 40-degree heat in the summer, snow, ice and minus temperatures

in the winter…..and let’s not forget about the rain! No matter how experienced you are in this industry there will always be something you are yet to encounter, and these weather conditions were certainly that for me last year.

Looking forward to 2023, we know the cost of living crisis will affect us all, but together as a community we will again face this head on and do everything we can to ensure this year is as successful as the previous one.

The support of NOEA continues to be invaluable for me and many others. With advice, guidance, up to date information, and a community of likeminded people to network with, I am so proud to be a part of it.

We look forward to seeing you at an event soon!

As we emerge from the pandemic into what feels somewhat normal operations for events, there are several key challenges presently being felt and on our horizons. I feel excited for the challenges ahead in my role as Vice President as there has never been a time where NOEA has been as important to the sector.

Event Suppliers in general are at the bottom of the pile and need the representation NOEA excels at both on local, national and international stages. We have excellent governmental relationships, substance press

coverage on issues and the backing of all types of event organisers from across the United Kingdom and beyond.

2023 will see many challenges and we will tackle them head on together, fighting for everyone’s rights to being treated fairly with recognition of the suffering our sector has been through and remains to be going through in the present economic climate.

I would encourage any member who is going through tough times to reach out to the NOEA council. You will find us a very understanding ear and you may not even realise the range of options we may be aware of to support you.

CODE OF ETHICS AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

OUR MEMBERS, COUNCIL AND SUPPLIERS AGREE TO: FAIRNESS

• Act with courage & composure and shall face all challenges with self-control, tolerance & impartiality.

• Promote a positive wellbeing within the events community and ensure that all people have fair and equal access to our services according to needs.

• Maintain an open attitude and continue to improve our understanding and awareness of cultural, social and community issues.

• Carry out our duties in a fair manner guided by the principles of impartiality and non-discrimination.

• Mediate fairly and promptly any disputes, and offer the benefits of the Associations Arbitration Service and to abide by its’ decision.

INTEGRITY

• Recognise our role within the events industry as being a symbol of faith and trust and the obligation this place upon us to act with integrity, fairness & respect.

• Understand that I am personally responsible for my own actions and will appropriately exercise my discretion.

• Shall act as a positive roll model in delivering a professional, impartial service, placing the services of the event industry.

• Not accept any gift or gratuity that could or could be perceived to compromise my impartiality

• Avoid all behaviour which is or may be reasonably considered as abusive, bullying, harassing or victimising. We will demonstrate and promote good conduct and will challenge the conduct of colleagues where we reasonably believe they have fallen below the standards set out in this code.

NOEA LEGAL ADVICE

The National Outdoor Events Association is pleased to promote a Legal Advice Forum for the benefit of Members.

NOEA has negotiated with Laceys Solicitors, for provision of an initial free 30 minutes consultation personally or by telephone for Members. It will be open on a fee-paying basis for all advice given thereafter.

The subject areas covered are as follows:-

• Liquor Licences, Public Entertainment Licences, Sports Licences, Lottery, Betting & Gaming and associated matters.

• Food Safety, Health and Safety – enforcement of Local Authorities.

• Acquisitions, Sales, Mergers, Terms and Conditions of Business, Review of Business contracts, Standard Form contracts for Events, personal and corporate Insolvency, preparation of Agency Agreements,

• Honour all contractual commitments and government legislation

• Apply those relevant codes of Practice and Conduct established by other professional bodies which are recognised by the Association.

• Possess prior to undertaking any event the financial viability to be able to guarantee the payment of all suppliers for services rendered in connection with that event.

• Provide and maintain the highest possible standards of health, safety, cleanliness and presentation.

• Possess and maintain appropriate and adequate insurance.

• Further the purpose of the Association by assisting in promotion of the standards, status and interests of the Outdoor Events industry.

RESPECT

• Take pride in working as part of a team dedicated to protecting our colleagues.

• Show respect for all people and their beliefs, values, cultures and individual needs.

• Respect all human dignity as our attitude and the way we behave contribute to the consent our colleagues have for us.

• Treat all people in a humane and dignified manner.

• Ensure that our relationships with colleagues is based on a mutual respect and understanding and shall therefor conduct all communications on that basis.

• Operate the highest standards in relation to welfare, management and treatment of staff (permanent, casual, freelance and volunteer), contractors and suppliers.

Building Back a Better Industry

Events never stand still, and nor do event professionals. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that your trade association is on the move as well.

The challenges we face as an association have changed, but they still loom large. It’s fair to say that we have moved on from Covid-19 itself but continue to deal with its massive legacies. Rising inflation, the cost-of-living crisis and the onset of recession will pinch consumer spending, while also adding to the increasing cost of holding events. At the same time, we continue to anticipate the next sucker punch that may be coming towards our industry and the thousands of businesses and individuals that make it up.

That is what Build Back Better is all about, the creation of a protective wall around the industry, and this year we continue in our mission to support a more robust and powerful industry, capable of taking on the many storms that will continue to come its way.

At this point it’s important to mention our supporters. From NCASS to See Tickets, People’s Postcode Lottery to 2CL, The Showman’s Show and Access All Areas, Formula E and everyone else who has supported our association. These businesses have helped create

the foundations of what Build Back Better represents, adding insight, research, intelligence, and counsel to areas that are crucial in creating a stronger events industry.

Together we have begun to tackle major issues such as talent and skills, sustainability, diversity, and inclusion within the industry. They have given us a more powerful voice and become partners in our discussions with business and, alongside our members, been a continual source of credible information that has helped to shape policy within government.

We still have much to do, these issues are not addressed overnight, and many have been part of the NOEA agenda since the beginning of the pandemic. But they remain integral and will form the basis of many more initiatives you will see from NOEA over the course of this year.

We wish all our members the very best of luck for 2023 and remind you that no matter what, you will always have a proactive and passionate trade association next to you, working hard to support your business and your industry.

VICE CHAIRMAN – JONATHAN REID

As I write this, we are in the grip of a very cold spell of weather. The summer events all seem a lifetime away with their light nights and t-shirt temperatures! Looking back, what a rollercoaster year we have had in 2022. Starting the year still with the spectre of Covid, fortunately Scotland’s creative and hardworking teams delivered a very full calendar of events despite financial crises’, rocketing fuel costs, the terrible ongoing war in Ukraine, three changes of Prime Minister and now a winter of rising energy costs and picket lines. You couldn’t make it up!

The plus, at least, is that everyone I speak to in our industry has had a decent year and there have been some fantastic milestones in 2022 – for instance, The 150th Open Championship was help in St Andrews in July and saw record crowds attending this most prestigious golfing event. Equally the 200th Royal Highland Show was held at its home in Ingliston in June and again we saw massive crowds flocking back to a much-loved event.

There has been an enormous amount of music this summer too – Hampden has never been so busy, plus of course our many annual festivals all returned to capacity crowds.

Of course, these are only a few from a list of many thousands of wonderful events throughout the country and it is great to see our industry so busy and vibrant.

Not before time of course and as far as I can see, there are some really exciting events programmed already for Scotland in 2023:

I am very excited about The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships which is an inaugural event scheduled for early August in Glasgow, and various other venues across Scotland.

The Championships will then be held every four years (in the year preceding the Olympic Games) brings together various disciplines of cycling, including the Road Racing, Mountain Biking and Track Cycling.  Back in 2011, I was fortunate to be in Shetland for The Tall Ships Race – it returns to Lerwick in 2023 and will no doubt again be a magnificent spectacle. I will not make it this year, but I look forward to the footage and wonderful photography that will no doubt circulate from our most northern point. Again, just an exceedingly small example of what is coming to Scotland and looking even further ahead, we also have World Athletic Championships, World Orienteering Championships and so much more.

Lastly, please do not forget to raise a glass for the hard-working teams of crew out braving the cold this winter to make all sorts of celebrations including Hogmanay and New Year celebrations run smoothly and safely across Scotland.

AWARDS

NOEA AWARDS CELEBRATE THE BEST OF 2022

24th November, UK: The Birmingham 2022 Festival Sites and The Sky Safari by Exclusive Ballooning took away Event of the Year Award - Public Sector, and Event of the Year Award - Private Sector, respectively at this year’s NOEA Awards. The accolades came as the organisation returned to live and celebrated the very best of the outdoor events world.

As part of the evening, which saw over 150 event professionals convene for the last of the event industry’s 2022 conference and events programme, Chris Howes from Festival Medical was given the Lifetime Achievement Award, and NOEA’s CEO Susan Tanner was recognised by President Tom Clements through the President’s Award, following her massive influence representing the sector over the pandemic and beyond. In the meantime, Cube Modular picked up the Judges Award which recognised the importance of innovation in the industry going forward.

Also, within the people focused awards, Evan Morgan from Festivall Services was recognised as the Best Unsung Hero Award, while Rick Bate was given the Best Up and Coming Event Organiser: One to Watch award. Within the business categories, Lacey’s Solicitors LLP were recognised for Best Support to the Event Industry Award following the considerable amount of free advice the company gave to the industry throughout the year. In the meantime, Wasserman was recognised for Best Diversity Equity & Inclusion Initiative, and Green Space Dark Skies for The Sustainability Award.

EVENT WINE SOLUTIONS: A JOURNEY TO SUSTAINABILITY

They say a leopard can’t change its spots but in the fast-paced world of event sustainability this kind of super-power has become an essential survival skill. When Event Wine Solutions founder Paul Scaife and his team decided to take a long, hard look at their wine packaging in 2016 and assess the carbon footprint that it produced, they had no idea of the journey it would take them on.

2016: This desire to assess the impact of their packaging led the team to explore its entire lifecycle by visiting the Grist Environmental ‘zero-to-landfill’ recycling plant in Wiltshire where they found out exactly what happens to the wine bottles once they leave a festival site. Horrified to discover the complexity of the recycling process, they learned that major changes to their multi-layered PET (plastic) product had to be made, and they made a pledge to turn this dream into a reality.

Event Wine Solutions also ran their ideas and carbon comparison study past the eagle eye of the Clean Earth Collective’s Al Chisholm, who they met whilst he was carbon auditing End of the Road and 2000 Trees in 2019. Clean Earth Collective took on the task of auditing the carbon produced by Event Wine Solutions’ packaging to be able to offset it all.

2018: The next phase of their analysis saw them engage circular economy consultants Connor Bryant and Jack Schneider of Rubbish Ideas to take a deep dive into the carbon produced throughout the product’s lifecycle and compare this against different packaging solutions. Rubbish Ideas quickly arrived at the conclusion that a mono-layer, clear plastic bottle which was made from 100% recycled material (and again, 100% recyclable after use), was the only real contender - but finding a supplier for this would take another two years of research and development work.

2020: Product innovation across the recycling industry made strides forwards over the next two years and when a partner was finally found who could blow bottles for the company in 2020, we all know what happened next! Those 18+ months were put to good use as research and development time for Event Wine Solutions and their dream of mono-layer 100% rPET bottles finally became a reality in 2021 with projections for 2022 smashing all expectation.

2023 and beyond: Not content with resting there, 2023 and beyond sees Event Wine Solutions striving to offset all carbon from their UK operations, with their next stop on the journey of improvement being to become a carbon-negative business. Ever forwards, we must march!

An Events Apprenticeships Advisory Board (EAAB) has been formed in conjunction with UKEVENTS The Board includes employers and wider industry representation. At a time of workforce challenges, the EAAB will create recognised and coordinated event apprenticeships offered across the UK events industry.

Apprenticeships are a route into the industry, with the industry welcoming over 500 Event Assistant apprentices coming through between 2017-2021 (IfATE, 2022). However, given the number of people employed in the industry, this is a small percentage which is perhaps due to a lack of awareness, understanding and investment as to the opportunities available outside of the university route. This presents a great opportunity for further growth in the events industry.

The EAAB are now in a unique position to launch a crowdfunding initiative and need the industry’s support to drive this forward and promote new talent into this ever-evolving industry, including school leavers, those already working in the industry or those who have decided to make a career change. Over the last 6 months, with the support of some seed funding from UKEVENTS, the EAAB have given their time to build the strategy and plan, but it now requires further funding.

Richard Waddington, Chair of EMA said: “Whilst this is a massive ask in the current financial climate, the industry is crying out for people and there is an enormous untapped talent pool of people we’re not talking to, we need to bang the drum louder, have processes in place and attract people to this amazing industry.”

The EA framework will launch with five apprenticeships schemes: Events Assistant, Live Event Technician, Creative Venue Technician, Live Event Rigger, AV Event Technician.

When I started my third year of University in September 2021, I suddenly realised that the need to find a job to kick start my career was fast approaching. The safety net of a student loan and the “I’m still in full time education” excuse were soon to be a thing of the past. As many of my peers would say “it’s time to start adulting” something that is nowhere near as fun and exotic as it sounds!

I met Susan Tanner, CEO of NOEA whilst doing a summer job in the Show Office of the Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society. Susan would often be the provider of sweet treats and grapes to keep myself and the other show office staff going when the workload of the looming 2022 show didn’t allow much time for a trip to the supermarket to stock up on lunchy-things. Upon completion of the 2022 Mid-Somerset Show, I suddenly found myself feeling like a bit of a lost dog. Thankfully, Susan was on hand and took me in under her wing. In September 2022 I applied for a position with NOEA and was welcomed to the NOEA administration teamIn addition to the administrative skills I picked up whilst working at Mid-Somerset, I bring a passion for country pursuits to the team, having competed on my

My degree in Equine Business Management at Hartpury University and experience working in the management offices of two other country and agricultural shows has been invaluable and I enjoy applying the skills I’ve picked up to my work with NOEA as well as learning new skills whilst working alongside Susan.

I have embraced NOEA’s work with alacrity, taking a particular interest in raising our social media presence and devising new ways of reaching out to younger generations. Having been a key member of the organising team for the 2022 Convention, I am already helping plan the 2023 event and contributing to our drive to foster new partnerships within the outdoor events industry to ensure we are offering the best possible support to the whole of the sector.

From April 2023 I will head back to the Mid-Somerset Show office where I am looking forward to another summer of show preparation. NOEA will not be far away during the summer as I will have Susan on hand as she is Vice Chair of the Society.I will return to NOEA in September 2023 to continue working on the Convention as well as helping out with the various other events we attend such as the Showman’s Show.

2022 - A year of Recovery, Renewal and Resilience

This time last year, Omicron had emerged, forcing many events who had hoped for a successful festive period, to cancel or postpone. We’ve come a long way throughout 2022, with cultural, sporting and business events back in business, welcoming audiences, participants and delegates from across the world.

However, whilst the sector continues to recover, we can’t ignore the economic headwinds and ongoing issues faced by many across the industry. From increasing costs to commercial challenges, reduced funding across various levels, and staff recruitment and retention, many businesses continue to operate in a significant period of change and uncertainty. Despite this context, the sector continues to work in different ways, developing a range of resilient responses, innovation, and adaptation.

Throughout 2022, we have continued to focus on ensuring Scotland maintains and strengthens its position as a world-leading events destination, as well as reinforcing its status as the perfect stage for events by supporting an exciting portfolio of brand new and much-loved events that raise the country’s profile. Our stellar summer of golf was a perfect example where Scotland took centre stage hosting a number of the world’s biggest & most prestigious tournaments over an action packed five weeks before being named Best Golf Destination in the World in November this year.

Strategic partnerships have been at the heart of our work this year, enabling us to achieve better outcomes and joint success. The work of Scotland’s Event Industry Advisory Group continues to be exemplary in its collaborative approach with a number of significant achievements in 2022 including working with Government to support the return of events;

sharing knowledge, challenges and opportunities; and advocating the importance of the sector.

Key themes for the sector this year, which will span into 2023 and beyond have included the need to play a lead role on addressing sustainability, as events themselves can be hugely powerful in engaging the public in climate change through their own programming.

Digitisation in events continues to accelerate – it has changed the way we work, live and do business, and will continue to reshape the events industry.

Inspiring consumer confidence has also been critical - we supported the sector earlier this year with a brand-new consumer-facing campaign entitled ‘The Buzz is back!’ which showcased our wide-ranging event offering, ensuring Scotland was top of mind when thoughts returned to travel.

Looking ahead, we have a number of exciting major events in the pipeline including The Tall Ships Races in Lerwick, Shetland, next July, the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships at Emirates Arena in Glasgow, the World Orienteering Championships 2024 in Edinburgh, and the Orkney 2025 Island Games in addition to work on the UEFA EURO 2028 UK Bid.

We also look forward to the biggest cycling event ever, the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships where we cannot wait to welcome the world’s best riders from across 13 UCI Cycling World Championships to Glasgow and across Scotland next year.

Few industries have the impact events do, they play an important role in our communities, enabling us all to connect, enjoy and share memorable experiences. The positives of events continue to be further recognised, especially the sense of pride they help foster, and the valuable contribution they make towards our health and wellbeing – we must protect and celebrate significantly valuable benefits.

Reasons to be cheerful (with apologies to Ian Drury and the Blockheads)!

Part 1 - The Licensing Team at Laceys won a NOEA award for Best Support to the Event Industry 2022. I confess that until we actually won something that prestigious, I had no idea just how good it made not just the team feel but all our other colleagues in the Firm –thank you judges and commiserations to the others who were short-listed – none of you really deserved not to win! (Ed – double negatives are not good!)

Part 2 – Covid. It may not have gone away but the seemingly daily dose of new regulations during the pandemic seems (cross fingers) to have come to a grinding halt – long may it stay that way.

Part 3 – Events – they came back! More than a few didn’t make it (not to mention suppliers who are now increasingly squeezed what with inflation, supply chain issues and all that) but not only did NOEA have its first proper convention and award ceremony (did I mention we won one? Ed – Yes you did that already) but across the country we were able to get together en masse to HAVE FUN. The Event Industry is indeed bouncing back better and despite economic gloom, long may that continue – we need “reasons to be cheerful!”

So, what do we have in store?

The headline news is of course the “Protect Duty Legislation” or “Martin’s Law” which is likely to be

enacted before I sit down again to write my penultimate Year Book article (did I mention I’m leading up to retirement? Ed – Yes you did – get on with it!).

Seriously, Martyn Hett was one of 22 murdered in the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena on 22nd May 2017. Over 1,000 others suffered physical or psychological injuries. Following a campaign led by his mother Figen Murray, the Government undertook a public consultation and the outcome is that back in May 2022, the then Queen’s speech included a Bill which would require the owners and operators of “Publicly accessible locations” to provide plans for public safety in response to a terror attack.

Responsible operators already have regard to the possibility of a terror attack when preparing their risk assessments and increasingly, many Safety Advisory Groups already have this in mind when considering both Licensing Applications and Event Management Plans. This is not new – indeed, anyone who attended the last NOEA convention in Bath pre-Covid could not have failed to notice the barriers in place around the City Centre Christmas market area, designed even then to foil an attack by vehicles and again in place in 2022.

The difference now is that there will be a legal duty to consider the risk and prepare for not only a response but what might be done to mitigate the risk in the first place. As is always the case, the devil will lie in the detail of the legislation and regulations that will undoubtedly follow - my colleagues and I and NOEA itself will do all we can to keep NOEA members updated as matters progress and help everyone make sure that their venues and events are safe and compliant.

I have no doubt at all that some will decry this legislation as being yet more bureaucracy that only serves to increase paperwork and costs. Others may well take a disproportionate view about what is appropriate or necessary and look to impose draconian conditions or restrictions on events and venues (as happened on a number of occasions during the pandemic).

Personally, I take the view that a human life is priceless and in this day and age of severe threats from terrorism and wars on our doorstep in Europe, the sooner we have “Martin’s Law” enacted, the better. If it saves a single life it would be Part 4 - reasons to be cheerful – as long as everyone takes a common sense and pragmatic view.

Be that as it may, I hope you all have a happy and prosperous 2023 and I look forward to picking up another award in early course!

CHARLTON PARK ESTATE’S CHALLENGE

Diversification of a rural estate is nothing new, the path is well trodden, but can it still be as fruitful in the post Covid / Brexit market and what are the challenges to be faced?

With the sad passing of the 21st Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire the change in family patriarchy to the 22nd Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire presents the new Lord Suffolk and the Trustees with the opportunity to reconsider both the vision and mission for the Estate’s future.

Charlton Park Estate, like many similar estates, needs to adapt to survive. Can it unlock its 16th century historical legacy as a means to future proof the estate, but also learning from those who have gone before by opening the gates to promoters and showmen?

The 4,500-acre Estate, just a stone’s throw from the M4 nestled in the shadow of Malmesbury Abbey has been slowly embracing diversification for several years. Its farming business has historically been the backbone of the estate’s turnover, backed up with residential and commercial property rents. Events income by comparison has, up to now, been minimal. Most people know Charlton Park for its relationship with WOMAD – based at the park since 2017, which has thrived and expanded. Other smaller events using the park have come and gone.

Behind the scenes it is easy to think of the velvet slippered aristocrat nonchalantly reading Country Life with a bevy of Labradors by the Aga deciding if all the camping yurts should have a hot tub when the reality is a complex organisation straddling agriculture, residential lets and the host of compliance issues synonymous with running an estate business. Consideration must be given to who the customer might be and where to start. In the context of challenging market conditions caused by a cost-of-living crisis, the post pandemic reset and remaining uncertainty due to Brexit is it even possible to determine who your customer base might be and what projects to pursue? How much risk can be taken

And, consideration must be given to sustainability and the climate, as well as the need to support and include the local economy. All this, while also being mindful any aspect of your service can be reviewed anywhere on the internet at any time, given the instant reach of social media. It’s a huge consideration; can we do this well enough to meet

The Earl of Suffolk, the Trustees and the team at Charlton Park are grasping the nettle and beginning the first furtive steps towards a new future. By embracing the motto on the family coat of arms ‘Nous Maintiendros’, ‘We Will Maintain’, this diversification journey into both permanent and temporary events will surely secure the Estate for Charlton Park Estate has become a diversification case study in motion.

SUMMER BALL RETURNS FOR BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

University Summer Balls are a tradition in many towns and cities that go back years, and this tradition is no different for the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU). However, not only is the SUBU Summer Ball unique in the fact that it hosts a boutique festival in a green field - it’s also the biggest student festival in the UK.

More than 4,500 students bounced back to the event in June as it returned for the first time in three years.  Festival tents were lit up from day to night as students were treated to a star-studded line up across five stages, with performances from headliners Hybrid Minds, MS Banks, Wes Nelson, ABBA Gold and Dimension. Attendees enjoyed a variety of street food, on-site bars and free fairground rides to give students a spectacular send off before their summer break.

The event is organised as a fundraiser by the events team at SUBU, which is a charitable organisation. In previous years, the event has raised between £50,000 and £80,000, which has helped to ensure students have access to a host of outstanding opportunities beyond their degree at Bournemouth University.

The festival’s heritage includes a spectacular array of emerging artists that have performed on one of its multiple stages. The event has seen a mix of popular artists across all genres, including a performance from a young Stormzy before he took hold of the music industry.

Since the SUBU Summer Ball began in 1994, the festival has grown to a sell-out event with 7,500 tickets sold in 2019. As like many other events, the pandemic saw the ball suspended for two years, meaning nobody could remember how pivotal the event is in students’ calendars. With the understanding that many students this year had never been to an outdoor festival before, SUBU went back to basics and began to build trust in the event. They were confident that if they could get students over the line and to the ball, they’d then become huge advocates for the 2023 festival.

The team made real efforts to bring a focus on ‘people’ at the event. They saw a quality in an audience largely composed of people who know each other, or are friends of friends, bringing an atmosphere totally unique when compared to similar events.

The feeling of friendship and belonging became the key intangible ingredient of this years’ SUBU Summer Ball, and will continue to be amplified in the event for years to come.

2023 will once again see the team contracting big tops, stages, power and production to deliver the best night of students’ lives, with the double whammy of raising funds for the charity. The Summer Ball ensures that students leave Bournemouth University with a host of unforgettable memories – and we know that these memories cannot be matched with any other University in the UK.

On Thursday, November 17, Adam Harding, Director/ Owner of Phoenix Events (East) Ltd, and Anna Ryan, Operations Manager, attended an awards evening at Madingley Hall to collect our Defence Employer Recognition Scheme - Silver Award.

The awards evening was attended by employers from across East Anglia in recognition of the support they provide to members of the Armed Forces Community. Company’s such as Cambridge City Council, Norwich City Football Club,  EXCELR8 MotorsportLLP, Herfordshire Comunity NHS Trust and London Southend Airport to name a few of the companies selected. Anna Ryan Operations Manger said

We feel it is important to use this to recognise the work of our armed forces and remember those who have lost their lives in service of their country. RISK VS. REWARD – THE USE OF ALTERNATE FUELS IN THE EVENTS INDUSTRY

NOEA recognises that hybrid generators running on biofuel, which charge an onboard battery are becoming more common. But what are the risks associated with alternative fuels? Richard Bate (CUBE International / E Bike Grand Prix) considers these challenges.

Fire Risk:

Electrical vehicles (BEVs) might not seem more dangerous than internal combustion engine (ICE) alternatives, but the component materials of lithium-ion batteries (LIB) mean the fires (thermal runaway) are very energetic and traditional firefighting techniques don’t necessarily work.

The estimated failure rate (and therefore risk of combustion) of an individual battery cell is one in ten million. However, given an average EV contains approximately 7,000 cells, the risk increases significantly. Although it is not clear whether EVs are more likely than ICE vehicles to catch fire, the consequences are potentially more significant.

Whilst it can be disconnected, the component that carries the fire risk in a BEV cannot be removed; the

battery cannot be drained of electrolyte. Nor is there a tank of fuel which can be drained. An EV has chemical components that, in specific circumstances, can initiate and sustain an energetic fire.

With ‘normal’ firefighting techniques less effective, two common techniques are to let the vehicle burn out or submerse it in water, for which there are significant practical difficulties.

For a BEV, an event or venue strategy may be to back off and leave the fire to the professionals. However, this potentially risks letting the fire take hold to a point where even firefighters may not be able to contain it.

Hydrogen generators:

Hydrogen must be extracted and compressed in fuel tanks before being combined with oxygen in a fuel cell stack to create electricity to power vehicle motors. Whilst hydrogen is extremely flammable, it is no more or less dangerous than other flammable fuels, requiring a concentration of between 4-75% when mixed with air to become flammable. Because it dissipates so rapidly it would pose less risk in comparison to other fuel sources in uncontrolled conditions.

As an HFC generator doesn’t contain hydrogen, it is simply electronics with no inherent fire risk. However, whether in use or not, still contains the chemical elements for a thermal runaway with the attendant risks of toxic fumes.

What does this mean for event infrastructure fire safety?

It is the interface with the built environment that should most concern the event industry, as this brings a potentially serious fire risk that is not well understood. Industry is responding slowly to this change, especially for firefighting tactics for EVs in the most vulnerable settings. Whilst lithium-ion batteries in a workplace should be treated as any other fuel source, risk assessed and managed appropriately, the special nature of this risk must also be recognised.

Alternative fuel technologies will be a significant part of the event landscape in the very near future, so it is important in the events industry that we understand the nature of the associated risks and how adoption of new technologies can be safely incorporated into the design of events and event venues.

Ranging from Alice in Wonderland, Sports Sunday and Movie Madness, the market became a fun day out for all the family with a whole host of free fun things to do and see each month.

May 2022 featured perhaps the most popular Salisbury Street Sellers yet with dinosaurs taking over the Market Place! Crowds of people came to see the dinosaur characters as they danced in front of Salisbury Guildhall and took pictures with families. On top of this there were free dino-digs, workshops and music from popular local DJ, Disco Dion.

Back in 2018, Salisbury’s City Partners developed a new competitive positioning for Salisbury aiming to stimulate economic investment, attract visitors and build the reputation of the City back up following the Novichok poisonings. A City-wide consultation found that the Salisbury experience can be distilled into two simple words: Traditional. Original.

Following this, an exciting new Salisbury marque was developed which became engrained in the essence of the City and its markets and events. The city stakeholders now host a range of events that support the new brand positioning and shows what Salisbury has to offer. A great example of this is Salisbury City Council’s Salisbury Street Sellers market.

The market has become a fantastic celebration of our city’s great makers and crafters and brings in footfall in its thousands. With pitches starting at just £10, it supports our city’s makers and provides a unique shopping experience. Over 50 traders now sell at each market with their fantastic range of vintage, artisan, arts and crafts and other handmade products.

With the cost of living crisis, the City Council knew it was important to provide residents and visitors with free

As a seller I always enjoy having a look around myself as you just don’t know what you’ll find! I’m very much looking forward to returning in 2023 and seeing what the market team have planned!”

Sonia from Sonia Jones Crafts who is another regular trader and sells handmade jewellery and crochet items said: “The Street Sellers markets have been a great opportunity to get my business known to the local community. As a disabled woman business owner the markets have afforded me the chance to meet new customers and build my customer base. I now have many returning customers, some of whom have also joined my local craft meet up to help build a supportive and inclusive craft community.”

The market is open every second Sunday of the month from May to October in Salisbury Market Place.

HAMPSHIRE STREET FOOD AWARDS

Hampshire Street Food Awards hosted its first Big Eat event in June 2022, welcoming nearly 50 of Hampshire’s finest street vendors to its inaugural foodie festival for charity.

For the first time, Royal Victoria Country park in Netley, Southampton, was filled with street food vendors from across the south in a celebration of local food and talent with all the profits being donated to four local charities; Hound Basics Food Bank, Motiv8, Tonic and Music Fusion.

The free-to-attend festival fed nearly 8,000 visitors and the hugely popular event is set to return in September 2023.

The festival hosted a huge variety of street vendors including Gemma the Cookie Queen, FriesLove, and Arty-Stan Pizza, as well as live music, bands, fairground rides, a petting zoo and performances.

All winners were crowned by a panel of expert judges including MasterChef semi-finalist Luke Bryan, Britain’s Best Home Cook quarter finalist Katie Davies and ITV’s Britain’s Best Dish Susie Carter.

The overall winning vendor of the Big Eat festival was Down D’Islands which produces delicious and traditional Trinidadian food.

Event organiser Jeremy Gaskin, from Hamble, said: “The Big Eat was an absolutely fantastic event, it couldn’t have gone better. I was thrilled with the number of people that came along, showed their support and tucked in to some great food.

“The Big Eat allowed the community to connect and celebrate outstanding Hampshire street food, all while raising money for local charities. The wide range of award categories aimed to recognise and appreciate the amazing range of food we have right on our doorstep.

“We are excited to announce that the Big Eat will be returning bigger than before on the 8th-10th September 2023.”

Jeremy set up the Hampshire Street Food Awards in 2019 with the goal to celebrate and reward all of the hard work that goes on in Hampshire.

KENDAL MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL – SHARE THE ADVENTURE

INCLUDING D/DEAF & DISABLED AUDIENCES

Kendal Mountain Festival is a platform for inspiration, discovery and connection. Taking place in November, audiences meet in Kendal to enjoy a packed weekend of films and live shows with some of the biggest names in the world of outdoor adventure. This year the Festival sold over 25,000 tickets and our free Basecamp talks were more popular than ever. Whilst the figures are exciting and show that more people are interested in and engaging with the outdoors, we also want to ensure our content is reaching diverse audiences and that the Festival is accessible and welcoming to d/Deaf and disabled audiences.

One way we have sought to increase accessibility is through the development of our online programme. After the decision to cancel the live Festival in 2020 due to Covid-19, Kendal presented a spectacular Online

Festival in its stead. As a result we created the Festival Player which allows audiences to watch our legendary live events plus a wide selection of films on-demand. The Player is now an essential part of our programmingperfect for those wishing to catch up on missed content or tune in from the comfort of home.

One of our most memorable events this year featured Manni and Reuben Coe who joined us on stage with their book, ‘brother. do. you. love. me’. Reuben, who has down syndrome, had been living in a home providing specialised care and was cut off from his family. In despair, he sent his brother a text message. Immediately, Manni took Reuben out of care and moved them to a cottage in the countryside. After the Festival the team got together to review the weekend and we could not stop talking about this event. We have since decided to make

this session free on the Player to increase outreach and, as Reuben says, “make everyone and world emotional.”

Whilst the Player is a great asset to our programming, we also want to ensure that our live events are accessible for those who do want to attend. For the first time this year we presented ‘Access The Best Of Kendal’ which screened a selection of our most groundbreaking films with open captions, audio description and a selection with on screen BSL translation. To further bridge the gap between the d/Deaf community and the outdoor industry, we will encourage open captions for all future films and further develop our ‘Best Of’ screenings.

After each Festival we review feedback and look for ways to improve. Alongside increasing outreach online, developing the ‘Best Of’ collection and continuing to ensure venue accessibility, we also need to increase accessibility for neurodivergent audiences. By working in partnership with community groups and organisations

to include autism friendly screenings and further develop our Quiet Spaces, we hope that the future of the Festival is more open and socially inclusive than ever. As always, we are immensely grateful to our audiences, filmmakers and speakers for their participation and feedback.

LOOKING AFTER NEURO-DIVERSITY AT EVENTS

Some of you may have heard the term “neuor-diverse” being used, but what does it mean? Briefly, it iis a blanket term used to describe a condition some people may have with different cognitive abilities This can manifests as ADHD, autism or dyslexia behaviours. Neuro-diversity may be present in adults as well as children and can manifest in varying degrees, some of which may be disabling in some circumstances.

People with ADHD or an autism want to come out and enjoy events but may need a bit of support in doing so, particularly if their condition begins to manifest in a negative way. Their neuro-diversion may sometimes leave them vulnerable to episodes of confusion, anxiety or over-stimulation especially in a crowd.

Your awareness of these conditions and offer of support will allow your attendees to feel more comfortable at an event and may even encourage more people to attend if they know you are responsive to these conditions. Here are a few ideas you may consider

Have a “Safe Space” or “Quiet Room” that people can visit. This can be a simple small pop up tent with a few chairs that is isolated from general public access, perhaps next to your medics, security, welfare or information point so the person can feel secure and less stimulated but still able to call out to someone if they feel anxious and need to talk. If a neuro-diverse person is allowed time to step out of the crowds and away from all of the visual stimulation and noise, they can compose themselves and return to the event when they feel ready.

At times, a child with ADHD or an autism may bolt away from the parent and end up at your Lost Kids point. Rather than having them over stimulated by sitting and watching the crowd, have the found child sit behind a curtained area and monitored by your DBS checked minders. Have some fidget toys for them to play with. You may want to consider providing a “heavy blanket” that the child can wrap up in, as this sometimes helps calm down someone who is restless or stressed. Note: a heavy blanket can help calm down neuro-diverse adults too. Fidget toys and heavy blankets are easy to find on line

Consider displaying the symbol for neuro-diverse support on your website, in your event programme or on signage within the event. This is a rainbow coloured infinity symbol and again, can easily be found on line. State that a Quiet Space will be available or that your Lost Kids point will support children with ADHD or autism. By doing so this may make a difference between someone buying tickets for your event or staying home.

Outdoor events have come a long way in being inclusive and offering good customer care to all. By including support to neuro-diversion you will showing your customers your awareness and care for allowing them to have the best possible time at your event.

With demand for new experiences, fresh ways of delivering ‘immersive’ and ‘experiential’ events powered by fast moving event technology, well-being, social media and marketing, EVENTIT – now in its sixth year –offered its largest education programme initially online via our 3D platform bringing together speakers from around the world and culminating with in-person Q&A sessions at the show.

An experimental approach to the show floor also spiced things up for delegates with the introduction of skittles, putting, gin and whisky tastings, BATAK, treasure hunt, graffiti wall and 360 photo booths. These interactive activities were far more engaging and encouraged in depth conversations with buyers, who would usually wander from stand to stand. “We put an awful lot of thought into the design of the

It’s a global competition with ten teams fielding two squads of pro riders, one male, one female, all competing for one prize; to be the 2022 EBK Grand Prix Series Champions. The EBK Grand Prix Series is a new dynamic global sports property that combines real-world and eSport opportunities with equality, technology, and sustainability at its core. Ten events each held in a different global host city, will witness the theatre of live sporting drama performed throughout the one-hour long criterium-style race. Both male and female competitions are treated equally with the points scored from both contributing to the overall team’s competition. The Big Eat is a non-profit event that aims to promote street food in Hampshire. But a proper safeguarding service goes beyond minding “”lost kids”” into overseeing the safety and welfare of all minors under the age of 18 who are vulnerable and could come to potential harm through alcohol or substance misuse, neglect or abuse. The welfare team can support any vulnerable young person and ensure that they receive help and understanding. The welfare tent is a place for recovery.
