INTRODUCTION It is my pleasure to share with you the progress of the ASAO as I complete my first year as Chairman in our centenary year. The association is thriving with almost 300 members, record attendance at ASAO events and a year-round calendar of events for members to enjoy in our special year fronted by the champion of champions project and publication. We started the year with a newly formatted Learning Day, where delegates enjoyed sessions on both tradestands and livestock competitions. The day was packed with great networking opportunities, lots of learning and many amazing ideas. The Summer was filled with fantastic Shows across the UK with members reporting high attendances, great feedback and quality competitions. Sadly, many reported a significant increase in the cost of running their event. The annual conference took place at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate. The new format of two full days was well received by delegates, who enjoyed a variety of speakers, contractors and an opportunity to catch up with fellow Show organisers. Networking is a crucial part of the Association and having time to exchange views, ideas and experiences is very valuable for our improvement. Looking ahead, we have some key priorities. The first is to finish the strategic review and start implementing the findings. This will help us improve our services to members, expand our influence and stay on top of new regulations. Secondly, we will be finalising our staff requirements and advertising for a permanent 6

INTRODUCTION membership secretary. Finally, we will continue to provide fantastic support for our members throughout the year. There are two groups of people who I must thank. The first one is the ASAO staff: Paul, Tim, Jo and Alan. They are an amazing team who collaborate to achieve excellent results. The second one is the ASAO Council who have devoted a tremendous amount of time to the association in the last year. Without these two groups, we would not be the association we are. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to you, our members, for your dedication and enthusiasm to the Agricultural Show industry. ASAO COUNCIL Members & Secretary Denis Dooley – ASAO Chairman Denis Dooley is the Chief Executive of the New Forest Agricultural Show Society, organisers of the New Forest & Hampshire County Show, which is held in July each year. Following a degree in Equine Business Management, Denis joined the Society in 2006 and was appointed Chief Executive in 2011. Denis has been instrumental in the creation of the Next Generation project which involves young people in all areas of the Society to keep the Show in safe hands for many years to come. Outside of work Denis is married to Johanna and has two children – Bella and Jack, he enjoys cycling, visiting family and walking his Labrador, Woody. Email: denis@newforestshow.co.uk

Paul Hooper OBE – ASAO Secretary Paul Hooper OBE Was the Society Secretary for the Royal Bath & West of England Society retiring from the Society in 2020 after 43 years service. A well-known figure throughout the shows industry. He began his career in 1977 and is experienced in most aspects of agricultural and country show organisation at national level. In 2015, he was awarded an OBE in Her Majesty The Queen’s Birthday Honours. Paul enjoys listening to military music in his spare time. Email: PJH@asao.co.uk

Alison Baylis Alison has been the Show Secretary of Bucks County Agricultural Association since 2002 and appointed onto the ASAO Council in 2019. Rhonda Geary (Co-opted) Rhonda is the Operations Director for the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society and Balmoral Show Rhonda is also the current Secretary of the Northern Ireland Shows Association. Rhonda is the ASAO’s Regional Champion for Northern Ireland. Email: rhonda@ruas.org.uk

Richard Heath Showground Director for the Moreton-in-Marsh Show; a traditional one-day show on the first Saturday in September. Richard became involved with organising agricultural shows whilst studying bio veterinary science at Harper Adams University. Becoming a Director and Trustee of the Hanbury Countryside Show in Worcestershire. Previously employed by the Three Counties Agricultural Society, working principally on the Royal Three Counties Show. Richard has attended various midlands agricultural shows year after year from a young age, often exhibiting his rare breed poultry. ASAO COUNCIL Members Corrie Ince Corrie has been working in events since 2006, starting off with the Edenbridge & Oxted Show, where she was involved in all aspects of show organising. In 2012 she moved to working in more commercial events for a Brighton based manufacturing company, organising their events in the UK and Internationally. In 2016 she moved back into the “show business” and become Sales & operations Manager at the South of England Agricultural Society, responsible for booking and managing of trade stands and content for their 4 annual shows. In July 2020 she become Show Director at the South of England, with overall coordination and management of the 4 shows. Christine Knipe Christine has been involved with agricultural shows all her life – exhibiting, stewarding, volunteering, judging, and visiting. After 18 years in post, she recently stood down as Chief Executive of Westmorland County Agricultural Society and is currently Experience Director with the Royal Agricultural Society of England. Married to David, the Knipes live on their Cumbrian upland sheep, beef and poultry farm. Christine is a former Chairman of the ASAO, a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Societies, a Trustee of the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth, secretary of the North West Federation of Show Societies, section Chair at Cartmel Show and Chairs the national Access to Farms partnership. Sam Mackenzie-Green Sam Mackenzie-Green is the Show Manager for Yeovil Agricultural Society and has run county shows for over 20 years including Devon County Show, Dorset County Show and Yeovil Show. Sarah Moreland MBE MA Sarah is the Executive Director for the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society, been in post since March 2018 and hosts the two-day Herts County Show each May, the Society owns the 70 acre showground and hosts various events through the year, including a schools Food & Farming Education day. She has a background in Further Education, an active supporter of disability sport through Riding for the Disabled, Para dressage and Virtus. ASAO COUNCIL Members Mared Rand Jones

Mared is a dairy farmer’s daughter from Lampeter in Ceredigion, West Wales. Mared has recently been appointed as the new Chief Executive of the Wales Federation of Young Farmers Clubs. Mared previously worked as Head of Operations for Royal Welsh Agriculture Society. Her role involved organising contractors, the livestock, shearing and tradestand sections for the Royal Welsh Show and lead the Royal Welsh Winter Fair. Mared also lead on the Welsh ASAO and organise the annual Welsh Conference at the Royal Welsh showground. Mared is an active member of Lampeter Agriculture Show for over 20 years and have been a Horse Steward since the age of 10. Mared has recently been invited to join the Lampeter Stallion Committee. Christopher Riddle

Chris Riddle has been Secretary of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association since 1989 and is only the ninth person to hold this position since the organisation was founded in 1793. He is married to Thelma and has two children – Emma and Harry and Emma is also part of the RCAA’s team where she is Pavilion Centre Manager. Chris is a former Chairman of the ASAO and a former Trustee and National Chairman of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution. He is also a Trustee of the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth, Deputy Chairman, Trustee and Honorary Life Member of the Royal Smithfield Club and Honorary Treasurer of The Farmers Club as well as being an office holder with various other organisations. David Tennant

David has worked for the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland since 2010 beginning as an annual temporary member of staff before becoming permanently employed in 2015 and moving to his current position of Head of Show in 2022. Along with looking after the trade, competitions and activation elements of the Royal Highland Show David is the lead on Scottish Show Forum, which holds an annual conference and provides a platform for the Scottish Agricultural Show industry to engage with each other and share good practice. In 2019, David graduated from the Scottish Enterprise Rural Leadership Program, which focuses on self-development and self-awareness to empower individuals to effectively respond to the challenges and to enact positive change in the wider rural economy. David Tite (Co-opted)

David Tite is the Chief Executive of Driffield Agricultural Society based in the East Riding of Yorkshire. He runs the Driffield Show and the Society’s Showground and has been involved for over 30 years, coming from a furniture design background. David led on the development of the Society’s Schools Food and Farming Education Day, it’s Countryside Careers Evening and the construction of its events centre and site facilities whilst developing its year round activity on site, and more recently designing a flood management system to protect the showground. David is also a past Chairman of the ASAO, sits on the East Riding Rural Partnership and is married to Cara and they have two young boys Monty and Rupert. Email: david@driffieldshowground.co.uk

Benefits BENEFITS NETWORKING The ASAO gives you the opportunity to network with other members and show organisers and discuss current topics and issues, both online and via interactive events: Facebook Members Group The ASAO has a private, members only, Facebook group allowing show organisers to ask questions and share innovative ideas with each other. Monthly Catch ups on Zoom Each month, there is an opportunity to join a zoom meeting to discuss urgent issues and be updated on recent legislation and industry developments. This may include a special presentation occasionally. Annual Autumn Conference The ASAO holds its Annual Conference in the Autumn, moving to a different location each year. Delegates come from across the UK to take part in a programme of presentations, panel discussions with keynote speakers and syndicate sessions focusing on current industry issues. The Conference is an excellent opportunity for show organisers to share experiences, exchange ideas and tackle ongoing challenges. The Conference also offers event organisers the chance to chat to each other with evening social functions. Regional Meetings ASAO members can attend one-day regional meetings throughout the UK with colleagues to discuss issues and challenges of both a local and a national nature. Learning Day The Learning Day is an annual one-day event held in late-February/early-March. Each Learning Day focuses on several key subjects so delegates know that the subject matter is targeted. The topics are chosen by the membership and may include subjects such as livestock and equine matters, marketing and promotion, membership, sponsorship, trade stands and education.

1. PPL PRS Ltd (The Music Licence)

There are two licences in operation – one for pre-recorded music and one for live music. The ASAO has arranged a fee collection service for the pre-recorded licence through PPL at a 20% discount – this discounted amount will be added to your ASAO membership invoice and will be calculated on an individual basis depending on footfall. For those with live music, PRS will contact you directly and you should ensure that the Agricultural Shows tariff is used.

Knowing that there is a group of people out there who are all willing to help and support each other is worth every penny of the membership fee in my opinion. Awards COWPAT Award (Countess of Wessex Perpetual Annual Trophy) The award was originally conceived by our Patron as an award to acknowledge the Show Secretary/Officer that had made the most known ‘’mistake’’ in the year. These varied from incorrect identification of animals on a Royal visit to deleting the finished table plan for the ASAO black tie dinner!!
