THIS SCHEDULE IS ISSUED SUBJECT TO THE ORDERS AND REGULATIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT FOR ENVIRONMENT, FOOD & RURAL AFFAIRS (DEFRA) – ANIMAL GATHERINGS (INTERIM MEASURES) (ENGLAND) ORDER 2003 (OR AS AMENDED).

Entry Fees:

The Society is offering concessionary rates in Class nos. 8 - 226 to exhibitors who are members of the Society. It could well be to your advantage to consider becoming a member. Members’ subscription rates and facilities are detailed below

SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP

Membership is an expression of interest in and support for the aims and objectives of the Burwarton & District Agricultural Society which includes the right to attend, take part in and vote at the Annual General Meeting. Members are admitted free of charge to the Annual Show and to the Members’ facilities on production of their Membership badge. The Society will make no refund of membership subscriptions in the event of a Show being cancelled for whatever reason. Society membership benefits include: Free entrance to the Showground, ONE car pass for reserved forward parking in the Members’ only car park, use of Members’ Dining Pavilion and bar area, Grandstand Seating and use of Members’ high class toilet facilities. Guest membership – Members may introduce one guest each to these facilities on Show day on purchase of a Guest Badge at a cost of £20.00 (adult), £10 (Junior) or £5.00 (child) from the Information Point situated immediately outside the entrance to the Members’ bar area. Members’ forward parking will be available until 11.30am or until filled.

This year’s Three Shires Cattle competition gives farmers the chance to win a championship prize of £1000 and the coveted Three Shires Cattle Trophy. Points towards the championship are awarded at three premier agricultural shows.

The winning exhibitor will be identified at the Moreton Show where the Three Shires Cattle Trophy and prize money will be awarded. Impor tantly, attendance at all three shows is not compulsor y. Exhibitors will be able to attend one or two shows to gain points and still be in with a chance of winning a prize. In the event of a tie the prize money will be amalgamated and split evenly

Please note Competition open to both beef and dairy exhibitors. The following classes and Championships are not eligible to collect points: Breed or Interbreed Championships, Young Handlers, Pairs or Groups. The 2023 winner will not be eligible to enter the Three Shires competition in 2024 but will have free livestock entries into the three participating Shows instead.

No Prize Money will be awarded to any competitor whose entry does not appear under the appropriate class in the catalogue (unless entered under the Substitution Scheme in the Dairy Cattle Classes). The Dairy Cattle Substitution Scheme will operate subject to DEFRA Regulations in force on Show Day

The 1896 FARMERS CLUB PERPETUAL CHALLENGE CUP will be awarded to the Member of the Society, living within a 10 mile radius of the Showground, gaining the most points in Class nos. 8-226, C260 - C269 (Cattle, Sheep & Cereals).

The YOUNG FARMERS’ PERPETUAL CHALLENGE SHIELD presented by the Burwarton Show Young Farmers’ Club will be awarded to THE MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY gaining the highest number of points in Class nos. 8-226, (Cattle & Sheep).

GRAND PARADE

All Champion, Reserve Champion, first, second and third placed cattle and sheep are expected to join the Grand Parade at an appointed time (approx. 3.15pm). Any exhibitor refusing to comply with this rule, or with the instructions of the Stewards, may forfeit their prize money.

PRIZE DRAW

All exhibitors presented for the Grand Parade will be entered into a raffle to win one of two £50 prizes. This will be drawn in the Main Ring.

THREE SHIRES CATTLE TROPHY COMPETITION

Cattle exhibitors have the opportunity to collect points at three Midlands agricultural shows.

The exhibitor accumulating the greatest number of points will win the

THREE SHIRES CATTLE TROPHY and £1,000, with 2nd and 3rd receiving £350 and £150 respectively.

The Dairy exhibitor with the highest number of points will be awarded

The MARY OUGHTON MEMORIAL TROPHY and £100.00.

Class nos. 1-5 and 7 will be run under the Rules of the Shire Horse Society Main Ring - 9.30am prompt

Suffolk horse exhibitors will be judged separately within each class with prize money and rosettes awarded accordingly. (Only applicable in classes where two or more Suffolk entries forward.) Champion rosettes will be awarded if sufficient entries forward on Show day.

The WOOD BREWERY PERPETUAL CHALLENGE CUP for the BEST MARE in Class 4.

The TOM HIRONS PERPETUAL CHALLENGE CUP for the BEST FILLY FOAL in Class 5.

The NATIONAL HORSE BRASS SOCIETY AWARD will be presented to the BEST DECORATED exhibit in Class 7. The SUFFOLK HORSE SOCIETY will award a Rosette to the BEST SUFFOLK IN SHOW.

A PEWTER TANKARD presented by the CHAIRMAN OF THE SOCIETY will be awarded to the GROOM of the horse with the cleanest gears in Class 7.

A PEWTER TANKARD presented by the CHAIRMAN OF THE SOCIETY will be awarded to the BEST SUFFOLK IN SHOW.

Equine Influenza Vaccinations agreed and recommended by BEF / FEI

Equine Influenza and Tetanus vaccinations are a compulsory requirement for all horses attending the Burwarton Show. The requirement for the first three vaccinations is as follows: the first vaccination is Day 1; the second vaccination is to be administered 21 – 60 days later; the third booster vaccination within six months plus 21 days of the second vaccination; subsequent annual booster vaccination within 365 days of the previous booster vaccination. No horse should enter competitions within seven days of an EI vaccination. Foals should commence vaccinations at six months old. This is the latest guidance from the FEI/BEF but may be subject to change. Competitors are requested to check the website before entering. Passports will be randomly checked.

CATTLE

All exhibitors must ensure that they move their cattle back to home premises with BCMS.

IMPORTANT — BRUCELLOSIS SCHEMES

Cows or heifers calving at the Show before the time of judging WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE. Cows or heifers which appear about to calve will be placed in isolation and after calving returned home as soon as possible. Cows or heifers showing any abnormal discharge or which appear to be about to abort or which do abort WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE and will be placed in isolation at once. As soon as samples have been taken the animals together with all other Show animals from the same registered premises MUST be returned home and will not be allowed to compete.

THE COMMITTEE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CANCEL OR AMALGAMATE ANY CLASSES WHERE THERE ARE INSUFFICIENT ENTRIES. EXHIBITORS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF ANY CANCELLATION OR AMALGAMATION PRIOR TO SHOW DAY. PURE BRED BEEF BREED CLASSES WITH INSUFFICIENT ENTRIES WILL BE AMALGAMATED INTO THE ANY PURE BRED BEEF CATTLE SECTION.

This section is run in accordance with the rules of the Highland Cattle Society. Females entered in the appendix register of the Herd Book, either Appendix B or Appendix A, are identified by the letter ‘B’ or ‘A’ tattooed in the ear or written in waterproof ink on the ear tag.

Oxford Sandy & Black - Burwarton is a qualifier for the Oxford Sandy & Black Pig Society Champion of Champions competition, the final of which is to be held at Edenbridge & Oxted Show on Monday 26 August 2024.The OSBPS will provide a rosette for the highest placed OSB pig and a Champion of Champions qualifying rosette for the best pig to put forward at the final. If the Best of Breed has already qualified at another show then the second placed pig may be awarded the rosette to qualify. This competition is for Society members only.

Tamworth - The Champion Tamworth pig will be eligible for entry into the Tamworth Champion of Champions competition to be held at the Dorset County Show on 7 & 8 September 2024. The owner must be a member of the Tamworth Breeders’ Club.

Saddleback - The highest placed Saddleback born in 2024 of either sex will be eligible for the final of the Junior Saddleback Championship at Malvern Autumn Show on 27-29 September 2024. The Champion Saddleback at the show will be eligible for the Champion of Champions competition also held at the Malvern Autumn Show. Qualification is open to BSBC members only.

Middle White – The Champion Middle White pig will qualify for the MWPBC Champion of Champions competition to be held at the Edenbridge & Oxted Show on 25-26 August 2024. A MWPBC rosette is presented to the Champion Middle White.

Berkshire – Burwarton is a qualifier for the Berkshire Pig Breeders Club Champion of Champions competition to be held at Newbury Show on Sunday 22 September 2024. If the winner has already qualified, the reserve may go forward.

Kunekune - The Champion Kunekune pig will be eligible for entry into the Kunekune Champion of Champions competition to be held at the Edenbridge & Oxted Show on 25-26 August 2024.

Welsh - The Pedigree Welsh Pig Society will offer a rosette to the highest placed pedigree Welsh pig. The winner will be eligible for the Welsh Champion of Champions competition to be held at Newbury Show on Sunday 22 September 2024. If the winner has already qualified, the reserve may go forward.

It is important that exhibitors of female pigs (all breeds) born before 1 January 2023 shall be eligible to compete only if, in the six calendar months prior to the Show they have farrowed, suckled and reared to four weeks of age, a birth notified litter of pigs. Female pigs born on or after 1 January and before 1 July in the year before the Show must within 18 months of their date of birth have farrowed, suckled and reared to four weeks of age, a birth notified litter of pigs.

CHARITABLE GRANTS

The Burwarton and District Agricultural Society Limited has limited funds available to make grants to assist in the furtherance of any of the following objects of the Society:—

1. The improvement of livestock, the advancement of breeding and the prevention and eradication of animal diseases.

2. The advancement of science and research in connection with agriculture and rural industries.

3. The development and improvement of crops and prevention and eradication of plant diseases and pests.

4. The development and improvement of agricultural machinery and equipment.

5. The holding of demonstrations and lectures on modern agricultural methods and processes.

6. The promotion of agricultural education and training.

7. The encouragement of Young Farmers Clubs and of activities related to agriculture by other youth organisations.

8. The encouragement of rural crafts and industries of interest to the farming community.

9. The promotion of co-operation between farmers and other land users with special reference to conservation.

10. The promotion of co-operation between rural and urban communities.

Application for grants to assist projects that further any of the above objects should be made in writing to The Secretary of the Society at The Show Office, Burwarton, Bridgnorth, Shropshire WV16 6QJ by 14 February.

ALL EXHIBITORS & COMPETITORS - Livestock SAFETY STANDARDS

1. It is the responsibility of all Exhibitors to ensure that all their staff are fully briefed on safety standards.

2. Exhibitors’ attention is drawn to the following points:

- Exhibitors must ensure that leaders are sufficiently experienced and that animals wear suitable restraining harness.

- All exhibitors must use the official walkways for movement of livestock to and from their judging rings.

- All exhibitors must follow designated traffic routes.

- Animals must not be left unattended whilst the Show is open to the public.

- No animal may enter the Showground if its place of origin is under health restriction.

- Animal health legislation will be enforced by the Shropshire Council, and all exhibitors will be deemed to comply with this legislation.

- Junior Handlers: All young handlers must be capable of controlling the animal being shown. The animals must be used to being handled and an experienced adult must be present ringside during judging in case of an emergency. Animals must be suitable for the age and ability of the handler. The judge has the authority to ask any exhibitor not having sufficient control of their animal to leave the ring.

3. Specific Guidance Notes:

- Heavy Horses

All exhibits including foals must be led by an experienced adult handler.

- Cattle

THERE MUST BE TWO EXPERIENCED HANDLERS WITH EACH BULL EXHIBIT.

As milking practices fall under the dairy hygiene regulations there must be no machine milking in the lines.

- Sheep

Maedi Visna Accredited Flock Scheme. Exhibitors should ensure that if their sheep are in the scheme, they do not come into contact with non-scheme sheep.

4. Fire: In the event of a fire occurring the following action must be taken: Immediately notify the Show Manager, giving exact details of the location.

Follow Steward’s instructions. In the absence of a Steward ensure that everyone retreats to a safe area away from the fire and clear the approach roads. If it is safe to do so tackle the fire with extinguishers until the Fire Service arrives. Any directive given by the Fire Service or Police must be followed.

5. Veterinary presence: The on-duty vet should be contacted via the Livestock commentators, Chief Stewards or Stewards.

6. Evacuation of Livestock: Should it be necessary to evacuate livestock, exhibitors must comply with Stewards’ instructions. Remember to keep accredited stock separate.

7. Gazebos should not obstruct the view from the Commentary boxes and MUST be erected over animal pens only and NOT extend into alleyways causing obstruction.

8. DOGS: ALL dogs are strictly prohibited from all areas of the LIVESTOCK field. In the interests of H&S this rule will be strictly enforced on Show day.

Rules And By-Laws for the regulation of the Show. - Livestock

ALL dogs are strictly prohibited from all areas of the LIVESTOCK FIELD. In the interests of Health and Safety this rule will be strictly enforced on Show day.

1 Heavy Horse exhibitors are requested to comply with the Equine Flu Requirements as stated on Page 9 of this Schedule.

2 Exhibitors shall be responsible for the correctness of their entries, which must be lodged with the Entries Secretary on or before the dates fixed and published. No entry will be accepted unless accompanied by the appropriate fees. BACS transfers should be made to: Burwarton & District Agricultural Society. Sort Code: 30-67-35. Account: 4928 8860 (Business).

3 The Society cannot be held responsible for any incorrect information supplied by Exhibitors and produced in the catalogue.

4 All exhibits in the Agricultural Classes must be the bona fide property of the exhibitor and must have been their property and on their premises for at least three months prior to the Show.

5 Judges and Stewards have the authority to disqualify any unruly animal from the show if, in their opinion, it is behaving in such a way likely to cause accident and/or injury to other animals, competitors, their associates or any member of the public.

6 The Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry and also to accept any entry provisionally.

7 The Committee reserves the right to withhold any of the prizes offered: (1) if in the opinion of the Judges, the exhibits do not possess sufficient merit, or (2) from any competitor or exhibitor whose entry does not appear in the Catalogue under the appropriate class unless specifically stated otherwise in the Schedule.

8 The Committee reserves the right to cancel or amalgamate any class of insufficient entries. Any pure bred beef breed classes with insufficient entries will be amalgamated into the Any Pure Bred Beef Cattle section. Exhibitors will be notified of any cancellation or amalgamation prior to Show Day.

9 Any breed champion from Class nos. 8-62 and 70-80 not forward in the Interbreed Championships will automatically forfeit the £25.00 Champion award.

10 All exhibits will be considered as being in the sole charge of the exhibitor and every exhibitor shall be responsible for any loss or damage caused by such exhibits.

11 The Committee, or officials appointed by them, shall be empowered to disqualify and demand the removal from the Showground of any animal which, in their opinion, is suffering from or infected with a contagious or infectious disease. All entrance fees for such animals shall be forfeited.

12 The Society expects all exhibitors to comply with Breed Society rules for showing of animals whilst on the showground.

13 The Committee, or officials appointed by them, shall be empowered to disqualify any exhibitor found to be contravening welfare regulations.

14 The Society, its Officers and servants, shall not be responsible to any person whatsoever whilst entering, visiting or leaving the Showground, for any damage or loss, however caused to the property of such person, or for any injury, fatal or otherwise, to any such person. The Society, its Officers and servants shall not be responsible for any accident, damage or loss, however caused, that may occur to any exhibitor or their employee or to any animal, article or property brought into the Showground, or whilst entering, visiting or leaving, or being carried into or out of the said Showground.The exhibitor shall be solely responsible for any loss, injury or damage that may be done to, or occasioned by, or arising from any animal, article or property exhibited or brought into the Showground by him/her and he/she shall indemnify and hold harmless the Society from all action, suits, expenses and claims on account of, or in respect of any such damage or injury which may be so caused or occasioned.

15 All livestock exhibits shall be in place on the Showground not later than 9.00am on the morning of the Show, in the charge of an attendant, who will be required to conform with the Rules and Regulations of the Society or instructions from Stewards. No exhibit shall be removed before 4.30pm without written permission from the relevant Chief Steward.

16 No exhibitor shall act as Steward in the class in which they exhibit. No person will be allowed in the Judging Ring except Judges, Officials, authorised Stewards and Competitors.

17 A Grand Parade of all Champion, Reserve Champion, first, second and third placed cattle and sheep will take place at an appointed time. All exhibts presented for the Grand Parade will be entered into a raffle to win one of two £50 cash prizes. These will be presented in the Main Ring.

18 All objections must be made in writing to the Show Manager within one hour of the finish of the event, together with a deposit of £25.00 for each objection, which will be forfeited if the objection is deemed frivolous. Objections will be considered by the Committee, and their decision shall be final.

19 The Committee reserves the right to alter the timing of events, but the order of the Schedule will be adhered to if possible.

20 CHALLENGE CUPS.With the exception of the Perpetual Challenge Cups, all Challenge Cups are to become the property of exhibitors winning them three times in succession or four times in all. All Breed Champions must parade for judging for the Supreme Championship Challenge Cups. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of all prize money and other awards gained by the animal concerned. Winners must undertake to return all Challenge Cups not later than 30 June, 2025.

21 The decision of the Committee, or anyone appointed by them, in all cases of dispute and on all questions as to the conduct of the Show, shall be absolutely final.

22 All prize money will be paid by BACS by 31 August. Please enter your bank details on your entry form to enable this method of payment. Officers will not chase for bank details and any prize money not claimed will be treated as a donation to the Society. No prize money or refunds will be paid after 30 September in the year of the Show.

23 Exhibitors are required to abide by the Safety Standards listed on page 31.

THE ORGANISERS OF THIS SHOW HAVE TAKEN REASONABLE PRECAUTIONS TO ENSURE THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF EVERYONE PRESENT. FOR THESE MEASURES TO BE EFFECTIVE, EVERYONE MUST TAKE ALL REASONABLE PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID AND PREVENT ACCIDENTS OCCURRING AND MUST OBEY THE INSTRUCTIONS OF SOCIETY OFFICIALS AND STEWARDS AT ALL TIMES.VEHICLES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE LIVESTOCK LORRY/CAR PARK EITHER BEFORE OR WHILST THE GRAND PARADE ENTRY OR EXIT IS IN PROGRESS.

ALL DOGS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED FROM ALL AREAS OF THE LIVESTOCK FIELD. IN THE INTERESTS OF HEALTH AND SAFETY THIS RULE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED ON SHOW DAY.

EXHIBITOR GAZEBOS SHOULD NOT OBSTRUCT THE VIEW OF THE COMMENTARY BOXES AND MUST BE ERECTED OVER ANIMAL PENS ONLY AND NOT EXTEND INTO PEDESTRIAN ALLEYWAYS CAUSING OBSTRUCTION.

THE SOCIETY IS REQUIRED TO RETAIN A LIST OF REGISTRATION NUMBERS OF ALL VEHICLES TRANSPORTING LIVESTOCK TO/FROM THE SHOW. PLEASE ENSURE YOU INCLUDE THIS ON YOUR ENTRY FORM(S).

How to enter online

 Open www.burwartonshow.co.uk

 Click the Enter Online button on the Home page. This will take you to the online schedules, online entry link and download of a paper entry form.

 Select your section: Horses & Ponies, Heavy Horses & Livestock (cattle) or Sheep & Pigs and click Enter Online Here. This will take you to Burwarton Show’s Entrymaster page. Double check that you are still in the section you require.

 Complete all the Customer Details requested. This person will receive the competitor pack in July.

 Select the Class No from the drop-down menu then complete ALL the information for that animal.

 Click + to add another entry for additional classes/animals and repeat the entry details.

 It is your responsibility to ensure that you enter the correct class and that all animal details are correct.

 When you have finished your entries, check whether there are any additional items you may require. Be aware of the number of passes allocated to your entries and purchase more if required.

 You will be able to benefit from Earlybird Membership rates if you add Membership to your entry form (Membership prices can be found on the website and page 5 of the schedule).

 Check your entries for typos and specific details. Some of this information will be published in the Show Day catalogue; not all errors will be spotted/recognised by the admin team.

 When you have finished with this page, check the Terms & Conditions box and proceed by selecting Confirm Payment

 Complete the payment process as instructed. PayPal is the facilitator.

 You will receive a confirmation email on completion of the entry and the payment has been processed. If you do NOT receive an email, your entry has not been completed. Please call the office if you are not able to retrieve your entry.

There will be photographers in all areas of the Showground. If you are not happy with photos being taken, which may be published, please speak with the photographer. BDAS will seek permission if the subject is known, but this is not always possible.
