“The quality of their watches is equal to many that can go for ten times the price or more.” — Jeff from McKinney, TX

“Blue face watches are on the discerning gentleman’s ‘watch list’.” – watchtime.com

Stone Cold Fox

So good-looking...heads will turn. So unbelievably-priced...jaws will drop.

E

very once in a while a timepiece comes along that’s so incredibly good looking, masterfully equipped and jawdroppingly priced, that it stops us stone cold. A watch that can take you seamlessly from the 18th hole to the board room. A watch that blurs the line betweens sports watch and dress watch. We’re talking the Blue Stone Chronograph, and it sits at the top of the discerning gentleman’s watch list. Striking in appearance and fully equipped with features, this is a watch of substance. The Blue Stone merges the durability of steel with the precision of crystal movement that’s accurate to 0.2 seconds a day. Both an analog and digital watch, the Blue Stone keeps time with pinpoint accuracy in two time zones. The watch’s handsome steel blue dial seamlessly blends an analog watch face with a stylish digital display. It’s a stopwatch, calendar, and alarm. Plus, the Blue Stone resists water up to 30 meters, making it up for water adventures. A watch with these features would easily cost you thousands if you shopped big names. But overcharging to justify an inflated brand name makes us blue in the face. Which is why we make superior looking and performing timepieces priced to please. Decades of experience in engineering enables Stauer to put quality on your wrist and keep your money in your pocket.

Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Experience the Blue Stone Chronograph for 30 days. If you’re not convinced you got excellence for less, send it back for a refund of the item price. Time is running out. Originally priced at $395, the Blue Stone Chronograph was already generating buzz among watch connoisseurs, but with the price slashed to $69, we can’t guarantee this limited-edition timepiece will last. president's letter CONVERSATIONS AND

COMMUNICATIONS

T

hanks for all the great comments about my article [Feb. 2018, “Lead Rider,” p. 26]. It’s very strange to see your life in print! There certainly was discussion about my trike and I want to clear up a couple of things. My trike is a combination of two kits. Originally in 2010 we put on a California Sidecar kit. A few years later, JR was very intrigued with the Eurowing trike kit, in particular, the front end. Marvin from Eurowing has engineered a new front end for a trike kit. A new triple tree, lines and more, led to a new rim and wheel for a car tire. So yes, that is a car tire on my front wheel but, to be very clear, the rim/ wheel was designed and made for that tire. For more information, look at the Eurowing ad in the magazine or check their website. How do we grow our Association is always a question I get asked when I visit with Members. I will also ask you that question because so many great ideas have come from you. I have said over the last few President’s Letters that I believe the new 2018 Wing will ignite new interest in the Gold Wing. As it does, are we ready to welcome new Members? What are we all doin to find those riders and co riders and inviting them to join us? I think back to when JR and I were in our late s or earl s and bou ht our first in for weekend getaways and vacations. We would see groups of riders out on the road and would even talk with them, but they didn’t share information about their organization. If you see a rider when you’re out and about, are you ready to share with them a Wing World magazine and point out the membership application inside? Do you know what you’d say? We always have copies in the trunk and truly, who knows how many new Members we have because of those conversations. Remember, invite them to join in the activities and rides that we have, not just the Chapter gathering. There is more to this Association than the Chapter Gathering. It’s vital to many of us, but for some, coming to education events, ride events or rallies may only be what they have time for. Let’s make them feel just as welcomed each time we see them. Let’s keep them in the loop of what’s going on, so the can come when it fits their lifest le.

10

When you’re hanging around the dealership, are you ready to engage that prospective buyer about the motorcycle? Have you offered to do a small skill event demonstration at a dealership? I’m certain dealers would be happy, if they have the parking area, to promote a safety event to their clients. Maybe they would even invite their clients to come and oin a co rider class put on b GWRRA. Let’s reach out and ask them and then be there in force to chat, socialize and invite all those visiting the dealership to join this amazing Association of motorcycle enthusiasts who happen to love the Gold Wing. In unison with seeking new Members, what about engaging Members on our rosters? How often do we reach out to each of them and invite them to our activities? This would be like “shopping in our closet” for that thing to wear. We already have it; we just forgot it is there. Let’s reach out and remember to invite them to join us. Let’s ha e a con ersation and find out what is of interest to them and then make sure we communicate with them. The best way to communicate is to pick up your phone and have a conversation! Let’s form a PAC to reach out – a Persistent And Convincing group, and make sure those who already are part of our family are made to feel welcome and enjoy all that’s involved in our motto, “Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge.”

CONNECTING

I

f you’re on social media, subscribe to several motorcycle magazines, group ride frequently, or enjoy Chapter life, you’ve probably heard or seen more of the Gold Wing motorcycle lately than you have in a while, if ever before. The release of the 2018 models has been a buzz heard around the world and enthusiasts can’t help but feed their curiosities. It’s been fun to see photos and videos from those who have already bought one from a Honda dealer or saw one at a motorcycle show. If you’re one of those out there with a new bike, consider sharing some of your own photos with Wing World readers. Let them know in detail what you’ve experienced with the new bike. We only ask that of the photos you submit, a few, if not all, haven’t been shared elsewhere. Let them be framed within the pages of the magazine on paper that you can proudly display on your coffee table or shared with family or potential Members. We invite you to do the same as Anita and JR Alkire, who in this issue write about their exploration on the new Wing. Even though winter had a stranglehold on Texas while they were test riding, they were able to learn more about how the bike handles, feels and will meet their needs. As an association of enthusiasts for the king of motorcycles, with some of the best riders around, GWRRA excels as a friendship haven. You can ride alone. You can own a bike alone. You can’t do friends alone. Don’t be alone. Connect. GWRRA is the place to be if you proclaim the Gold Wing, motorcycle riding and friends – your motorcycle trinity. It’s a blessing to unite with so many like-minded folks. GWRRA Members treasure their GWRRA friends. I’ve heard it over and over again from Members. Consider riding with a chapter. But keep in mind that many Members revel in seeing each other again at rallies and events even though we live in different time zones, near different shores or even across an ocean in different countries. Speaking of friends, staff is looking forward to seeing the 40 to Phoenix riders April 19 at the ome ffice. e li e to hear stories about e er one’s cross-country ride and where they stopped and what magical experiences they had. It’s great to catch up with those we know and meet new Members, as well as those who have never been to the ome ffice before. Come oin us at the open house. We’ll be serving food, giving out prizes and offering short rides in the area. The open house is free to all.

12

Somewhere else we reunite is at Wing Ding. Our new Web Designer Alex Zweig spruced up our Wing Ding pages. Make sure to see the new digs. If you haven’t signed up to join us in Knoxville do that now at https://wing-ding.org. I can’t wait to meet more folks and support our vendors. Last year we bought riding glasses that have a camera between the lenses. Craig and I have had a lot of fun with them. oor Crai was o ercome with the flu recent ly. After a week of misery, his cough became so se ere it tore his stomach muscles si nificantl . He missed two sessions of the Arizona Precision Motorcycle Drill Team skill enhancement course. That absence eliminated him from receiving a certificate. ut he participated in the final wee and will be signing up for another course. After I wrote about the training, a Member from North Carolina contacted me about how he could sign up for the course. Now that’s getting involved! Feel free to contact me anytime via mail, email, phone or on social media. I hope to see you in Tennessee. Meanwhile, keep the shiny side up.

Brightwork has always been a hallmark of a well-maintained boat, RV, car, truck or motorcycle, but achieving it has always been a laborious task. With Iosso Products’ Metal Polish, oxidation, tarnish, surface rust and water spots are easily buffed away. It polishes quickly and easily to a high shine that any owner would be proud of. Metal Polish is simple to use: rub on with a moist cloth and simply buff off by hand or machine. It adds a protective coating and deep shine that lasts for months. For companies and individuals working in compliance with California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations, osso manufactures a certified bio based ersion of etal olish. deal for stainless steel, chrome, aluminum, brass, bronze and copper, Iosso Metal Polish is useful on a wide range of other materials such as porcelain, Plexiglas, hard plastic and painted surfaces. It’ll remove black marks that metal often leaves on ceramic, heat bluing on chromed exhaust tubing, and road tar and oil. It’s safe to use on jewelry, silverware, musical instruments and other fine, delicate ob ects. ounce tube of osso roducts standard etal olish costs $9. One pound of either the original or bio-based version is $23. Five pounds is $88.

Draggin Jeans Draggin www.draggin.com

The original Kevlar-lined jean company, Draggin, has just released new protective jeans. The new Comfort Line jeans differ from Draggin’s older products in a number of important ways. They are constructed with stretch denim milled in the U.S. Each of the jeans feature soft, cotton pockets inside the hips and knees for the easy addition of CE approved armor (which can be purchased directly from Draggin). The knitted, 100-percent Dupont Kevlar lining in the Comfort Line jeans is treated with Sta-Cool Moisture Wicking Technology, which helps draw moisture away from the body and provides a softer, smoother, cooler yarn. The design is modernized, too. The rich, indigo blue denim with matching stitching makes it nearly impossible to see where the protective lining is added at the knee and backside. The rear pockets also feature a subtle winding road stitch detail, and a smart fold-over leather patch. Draggin jeans for women are now lighter, higher cut at the front, have seven belt loops and two leg lengths. The Comfort Line eans are a ailable in three st les: Comfort Classic it looser fittin ean and Comfort Slim Fit (tapered leg jean) for men, and Comfort Straight Leg (available in 30 and 33 inch inseams) for women. MSRP: $154.95.

Letters Police officer perspective

I have a complaint about an article in the January 2018 magazine. GWRRA is to join and educate people on the o s of ridin , especiall a old in . nd a lar e part of that is safet . o now find an article on page 50 with a title, “TPX PRO 3.0.” This is nothing short of a product review promoting the use of devices designed to defeat speed enforcement devices used by law enforcement. Police do not just pick on people obe in the law. he de ices used b officers are for enforcement of speed laws desi ned to enhance safet on the roads. et, here is promotin a de ice to specificall encoura e a rider to speed, therefore being unsafe. And then this device also allows for the locating of red light and speed cameras. What part of safe riding is incorporated in promoting devices which allow a rider to be unsafe? This is such a disappointment. Is GWRRA so desperate they need to allow people to tell folks, “Get this so you can speed and avoid red light cameras?” Am I missing something about being a safe rider in this article? And for the weak and desperate excuse, “It will allow you to not inadvertently speed, so when it alerts it will remind you to slow down. orse apples. cruise control does the same thin . s a retired after ears police officer, I can tell you that when I stopped a vehicle for speeding, if it had a speed device detector, they received a ticket for the full amount of the violation. People who use these devices are habitual violators, nothing less. also am prett certain most enforcement officers ha e no merc on iolators with speed de ice detectors. ~Kenneth Pesce, GWRRA #152350

Upset over product review

You can look and see by your records that I have been a Member for almost 30 years. A couple things that upset me with our or ani ation is the lac of respect for our own motto b the head office and Wing World. If you were about the motto, you would not publish articles such as the TPX Pro 3.0. I do not believe I need to go into the reason why there is nothing “Fun, Safe or Knowledgeable” about an article that endorses brea in laws as we see fit b usin e uipment allowin us to be notified when we are about to be cau ht. OK, now you are going to tell me that you are not endorsing the product. Well, I believe you are since the article lists price, how to et it and installation. ha e felt this wa about other articles and ha e ept uiet, but I’m tired of doing that. I believe you need to look at your articles more carefully and see if they really are in line with our motto. Also, I am willing to bet my riding career, I will never see this email published in our magazine. Thanks for listening. ~Bob Taylor, GWRRA #59925 Editor’s note: Wing World magazine belives it has a responsibility to review products of interest to our Members. Inclusion of a review does not imply an endorsement of a product or its use. With great respect for our men in blue and those who choose not to own a radar detector, the fact is, these devices are legal to own and operate in a personal vehicle in all U.S. states, except Virginia and Washington, D.C., and in some Canadian provinces.

Questions answered

Q:

Could you please clarify the purpose and scope of the “GWRRA does not vote” policy? In some situations, it has been applied to things such as the selection of a new logo, ride point or other Chapter decision. If the policy is interpreted such, that Members should not “vote” on any Chapter decision, what process for gathering Member input and feedback is recommended?

A:

Why we don’t vote in GWRRA is founded in our Founder’s philosophy that we are an Association and not a club. With a club, you have local dues as well as national dues and ou ote for our officers and decisions often at all levels. When you have an organization that is centered on votes, you have people lobb in for their positions on issues or office. er

often it is very divisive and leads to the demise of the organization. This is why our Founders decided to be an Association. As we all know, we only pay our dues to GWRRA and not to our Chapters or District. Our fficers are appointed based on their ualifications and willingness to serve. Decision-making is done through conversation and consensus. Consensus is a building exercise to create agreement and keep harmony in the Chapter and District. Most leaders can orchestrate a conversation, hearing all sides on an issue and then offer a direction that most all will agree with and that becomes the decision. So, the key to gathering embers input is to as uestions, sur e them and then listen. heir unified oices will rise to the top and will guide the leadership.

SAME, BUT NOT THE SAME. If there’s one defining element of every Honda Gold Wing, it has to be the bike’s liquid-cooled, horizontally opposed engine. Originally a 999 cc four-cylinder with a 72.0 x 61.4 mm bore and stroke, the all-new 2018 engine is a revolutionary piece of engineering, although it may not seem so at first glance. Let’s take a closer look. It’s easy to look at the new Gold Wing’s 1833 cc six-cylinder engine and think it’s a dressedup version of the previous 1832 cc powerplant (2001-2017). But that’s hardly the case. You’ve probably heard that the engine is shorter and lighter; now it’s time to see how that was done.

from 90 mm each to 81 mm, and also reduces the offset from the left and right cylinder banks by 4 mm. Moving the ignition pulser from the front of the crankshaft to the rear makes for a smaller front engine cover and another 7 mm savings in length. Until now, every Gold Wing has used singleoverhead-cam architecture. The new Gold Wing still has a single cam, but the valve train is all new, based on Honda’s Unicam system, found in engines like the CRF450R and Africa Twin. This design uses a finger-follower rocker arm on the intake side and a roller rocker arm on the exhaust. The system eliminates the valve lifter support structure from the previous 1832 cc engine, and that both shaves weight and makes the cylinder-head assembly more compact.

First, of course, there’s the matter of bore and stroke. The previous engine used a 74 mm bore and a 71 mm stroke. The new engine features a 1mm tighter bore and 2 mm longer stroke (73 x 73 mm). That alone is hardly enough to shrink the Gold Wing’s engine by more than an inch front to back. The crankshaft is new as well. In addition to the longer stroke, Honda engineers spec’d the crank material as a new, high-strength SCM440H alloy steel. This is similar to 4140 in the U.S., a premium chrome-moly steel. The material’s strength let the designers narrow the crank’s webs by 9mm, and this moves the cylinders’ centerlines

18

Finally, the new engine uses aluminum cylinder liners – another Gold Wing first. Overall, the changes add up to an engine that’s 29 mm shorter from the front of the engine to the back of the left cylinder head. And when you compare the new, 1833 cc engine coupled to its new six-speed manual transmission to the previous 1832 cc engine with a five-speed manual, the new powerplant is a whopping 13.7 pounds less! So the next time you see the 2018 Gold Wing’s all-new engine you’ll know: it may look the same from a distance, but the closer you look, the more improvements you’ll see. Until next month, ride safe.

Another first is the new engine’s four-valve design. Valve flow is directly proportional to the valve-seat area, and a pair of intakes and exhaust valves flow more than a single big intake and exhaust. The new engine’s intake valves are 27 mm across, while the exhausts are 24 mm.

Spring break Photos and story by Gary L. Mace

A

s our family contemplated how to spend my 17-year-old son’s high school spring break, my son lobbied hard to make it a motorcycle camping trip. Last summer, I picked up a 1995 Honda 750 Magna for the sole purpose of using it to teach my two sons to ride properly. Having ridden on the back of my motorcycles since the age of 4, I knew both sons would eventually take to riding, so my wife and I agreed it would be best for me to try to instill safety and good riding skills before they ran off on their own and bought a motorcycle. Since spring break for my son’s school was in mid-March, we knew the trip would have to be somewhere south. We decided on Gulf Shores, Alabama, where my wife and I have enjoyed visiting in the past. So, we hooked up our Time Out tent camper to our Gold Wing and my son loaded a T-bags piece of luggage onto the Magna. And we were ready to roll!

n our first da we rode from our home north of Knoxville, Tennessee, to Birmingham, Alabama. We arrived early enough to enjoy a several hour visit at Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. It was great to see all the outstanding examples of motorcycle history. We particularly enjoyed looking for a Honda CB750 since my two sons and I restored a 1971 CB750 with a sidecar several years ago, which is now in the hands of a French collector. I also enjoyed checking out the 1975 Honda Gold Wing since my bike is a 40th Anniversary Edition Gold Wing. It is truly amazing to see how motorcycle touring has evolved in just one lifetime. Our second day was spent riding to Gulf State Park where we set up our basecamp for the next several days. The state park is a well-maintained campground with clean amenities. The only drawback was the constant breeze that made cooking and campfires near impossible. ut that is sort of normal for any coastline site. ROAD TRIPS On our third day, we rode east along the coast into Florida. We made a stop at the National Naval Aviation Museum located at the Pensacola Naval Airbase (see photos, right). This is an incredible museum with a vast display of aviation history and admission is free. After the air museum, we enjoyed riding along the ulf coastline on a cloudless, sun filled da . The phrase, “It doesn’t get any better than this,” would be fittin for toda . or dinner that e ening, we drove a few miles to Foley, Alabama, where we had dinner at Lambert’s Cafe, “Home of the Throwed Rolls.” Anyone visiting the Gulf needs to make this a dinner stop one evening. Bring an appetite! It is truly a unique dining experience with pass-around side dishes and some dude throwing fresh hot rolls at you. Their website is www.throwedrolls.com. On day four our plans were to ride west along the coast with a trip on the Mobile Bay Ferry. My wife and I did that a few years ago and knew my son would enjoy seeing the oil rigs and, maybe, dolphins up close. However, when we got to the ferry we were advised it had broken down and had to return to the opposite shore. With no idea when it might return to service, we had no choice but to backtrack and take the long way around Mobile, Alabama, in order to ride the coastline near Biloxi and Gulf Port, Mississippi. or our fifth da , it was callin for hea storms so m son and too the da to fish from the ulf tate ar fishin pier. his is the second lon est fishin pier in labama and uite impressi e. Although we really did not catch anything, we had a reat da fishin and han in out with the pelicans. Later that day, heavy storms moved in. Heavy winds collapsed our add-a-room and my son’s tent got very wet. But nothing was damaged and we dried out by bedtime and had a nice quiet night. On day six, we began our journey back home. We decided to ride to Natchez, Mississippi, where we would ride the Natchez Trace Parkway to Nashville before heading home to east Tennessee. After a very pleasant day of riding, we arrived at Natchez State Park where we set up camp. Now this is one very nice campground – very clean, quiet, with level pads and nice grill, tables and fire rin all for a whoppin a ni ht f had more time, I could have spent another night here and explored the Natchez area more. Anyway ... I give two thumbs up for Natchez State Park campground. Day seven we began our trek up the Natchez Trace Parkway – a very scenic, somewhat slow

ROAD TRIPS ride along gentle curves on an excellent road surface. ur first stop was at an earl s inn, which ser ed those who originally walked the trace. Our next stop was at Cypress Swamps. This was something we simply do not see where we live. We even got to see some gators in the wild. We then decided to exit for gasoline. About halfway around the exit ramp I heard the nauseating sound of metal meeting asphalt. I looked in my mirror to see m son and the a na floppin to the left side. I pulled over and rushed to him and had him calm down so I could make an evaluation of his condition. He was upset that he may have scratched the bike, but I assured him that did not matter one bit. After a few minutes it was clear he did not hit very hard. The bike had no real damage other than a few adjustments. The Kevlar jeans, padded jacket and helmet all did their jobs. After he calmed down and we could talk about things, it appeared that he felt he was going too fast and touched the front brakes too hard while leaned over. I think the best lesson he will take away from this is that proper riding gear really can make a difference. I probably lost 10 years off my life during those few seconds. I assured my son he did not have to continue riding. I explained that I could get a U-Haul and head on home. He would not hear of it and assured me this was not changing his desire to ride. When I was certain bike and rider were OK after the accident, we rode a short distance where we sat down for an extended break. This was both to let my son relax more, but also to keep a close eye on him should any signs of unseen injury become apparent. After more than an hour, I was sure he was in fact OK to continue. So we proceeded to our next planned stop.

ROAD TRIPS The one advantage to running behind schedule due to the minor accident was we happened to reach where the Natchez Trace Parkway crosses the Tennessee River at sunset. Simply beautiful and a lesson to my son ... no matter how hurried you are, some things are worth taking the time to stop for. Now, one might think this would be enough adversity for one da but, oh, no. e finall arrived at our planned camping stop at the Hohenwald Natchez Trace KOA and it was a total disaster. All of the roads were so bad I could hardly keep my bike upright. I commented at one point that the roads literally appeared to have been carpet-bombed. I assure you that is not an exaggeration. We rode around this campground for 20 minutes in search of any site I could put my Gold Wing on its side stand long enough to disconnect the camper. There simply was nothing. Folks, avoid this campground! So using my GPS and cellphone I found an Americas Best Value motel, 15 miles away in Lawrenceville, Tennessee. Already after dark, I decided not to try to locate another campground. We were pleasantly surprised to find this was one of the nicer motels in this price range we have been to in some time. After a much needed good night’s sleep, we rode the last leg back to our home in east Tennessee. It was a trip I believe my son will remember for some time. It also taught him many lessons. One, that proper riding gear really does have value. If he ever chooses to ride without it, I rest easy knowing it is not because he doesn’t understand its worth. The second lesson he learned is no matter how well one plans a journey, things will happen that require you to adjust quickly and to make the best of things. THE

NEW WING

By JR and Anita Alkire Photos by @kevinwingphoto

here does one even start to share with you information about this new Gold Wing? It’s amazing! Smooth! Comfortable! Exciting! Some of you have had the opportunity to test ride it yourself now. JR and I want to share with you our impressions of the new 2018 Gold Wing. These are our experiences and opinions during our ride at the Honda Press Ride in Austin, Texas, Jan. , . was the rider and, for the first time in a long time, I was the co-rider. The anticipation of the trip was huge! JR was working hard to stay calm, but I could see he was eager to ride. We arrived in very chilly temperatures and woke the next morning to 11 degrees and ice. We went down to breakfast and it was confirmed that the plans for our trip had changed. We would not be riding that day, but if the weather predictions were correct, we would be able to ride the next day. So we spent the day inside and studied the new bike. They had a cutaway of the front dash so we could play with it and see how things work. Seeing the two frames and the differences between the 2017 and the 2018 was incredible. The bare frame definitel showed off the new lar er si e of the rear tire. But notably the front end is the center of attention with the rocker arms and the

lack of front fork seals! The new front end looks amazing. Now we can’t wait to see how it rides due to the new design. They even had the old and new engines on display. The older engine is so much bigger than the new engine. At lot of the reduction in size is due to the dual-clutch transmission and the fact that the new engine doesn’t have a starter. Those functions have been combined into a generator. We had full access to the engineers and Honda reps. I started posting on Facebook and many of you responded with questions. You asked if we can install foot pegs, and we learned that the covers snap off and reveal a bar, so foot pegs can be installed. We learned a button inside the small side glove box opens the gas tank. We also learned that the air filter will be ust as hard to change as it used to be on the previous models. As you asked, I asked Honda, and many questions were answered. Occasionally I’d look outside and si h at all those prett in s sittin there ust wanting to be ridden. The next morning was chilly but it warmed up as soon as we were told we would ride! At 10 a.m. we headed to the bikes. A White one had my name on it. Wait, it’s a DCT. I had asked for a manual six. Was JR disappointed? Not by the look on his face. We felt a little like we were in the speed-reading class, as fast as they were going through instructions and descriptions. Honda’s focus was let’s ride. Oh, it’s a balmy 31 degrees! The reps turned the heated seat and grips on, our helmets were pairing, well not quite so well but who cares, we were going to ride. JR’s impressions The seat was cold, but the seating position was great. It’s a very natural feeling. I was concerned because I have longer legs and without foot pegs I would be uncomfortable. That was not the case. The front end felt heavy. The bike was very adhered to the ground, but maybe it felt heavy because of

the different geometry or because the tires were cold. In looking at the dash, I wasn’t sure where everything was. The controls are on the handlebar and center control panel on the bike. It is designed that all can be controlled by the toggle on the left handlebar. Learning how to scroll through all the features will take some time. My current ride is a 2007, and I had gone riding right before the trip, so it was fresh in my mind. I wasn’t expecting a DCT but I would give it a try. Anita got on the bike and it wasn’t near as noticeable as when she gets on the 2007. I believe that is due to the fact the bike is 90 pounds lighter. When it was time to ride, it was clear to me as I rolled on the throttle that there was more pickup and go, due to the power to weight ratio. We were asked to be gentle due to the frozen ground and cold tires and to give the bike some time to warm up. It wasn’t long before the natural comfort of the bike was apparent. It really felt as if the co-rider was part of the bike. The platform is very stable. Our course was a 5-mile loop. They spaced the bikes about 20 seconds apart, both for separation and photo opportunities. It became very apparent who were the Gold Wing riders in the group. We became more comfortable with the bike in a shorter amount of time. The DCT has four modes of riding style: Tour, Sport, Econ and Rain. We started in Tour and I felt it ust didn t et into the turns the wa li e to ride. Then I found Sport mode. Oh yes, now this was more like it! The paddle shift became fun. I downshifted going into a corner and it went back to automatic mode when I stopped shifting. You don’t loose anything with a DCT. It’s actually an amazing experience and one that I now want to own. On my 2007, I swore I’d never own a bike without ABS brakes again. The ABS brakes on this new

36

bike are far superior to the old ones. Too much bra e and ou ll stand this bi e on its nose ust ask my co-rider. Gentle braking is key. The front end is quite something to watch. After lunch we went back out on the bikes to ride the countryside. I found myself watching the front end work and noticed how stable the fairing and windshield stayed. If you mount a camera on your windshield, you’ll get great shots with this new setup. That front end works – the ride is very smooth! Did I like it? Well, I’m still smiling! It’s an amazing redesign of the Gold Wing and I don’t believe I will miss the clutch. It didn’t take long before I stopped reaching for it and my foot stopped twitchin . h, and we did ma e this an official ride. We did a U-turn. The difference between a manual transmission and DCT is with the manual transmission you use your throttle and clutch with the friction zone. But with DCT, as an automatic, it wants to go into a neutral place, so you use your throttle and brake to keep the power on, and you’ll make an amazing U-turn. Anita’s impressions As I approached the bike, JR was already on it, ready to go. He was looking with amazement at the dash. The Honda tech wanted to get our helmets paired up. I can’t say we were successful with this, we ust needed a bit more time to understand the process. As I used to do when I was a co-rider, I put my hand on JR’s shoulder and asked if he was ready for me to get on. As I pushed up to get on, for some reason it felt easier to get onto the bike. I’m not sure if the seat wasn t as far up or the desi n is ust better. s gently put myself down on the seat I noticed how firm the seat was. wondered if that would be a concern later. The seat heater had been turned

on. It was appreciated even though I had on long underwear, eans, chaps, a thermal shirt, lon slee ed shirt and m ridin ac et. remembered how much colder it can be for the co-rider, and I was already cold. It wasn’t long until JR rolled on the throttle. This Gold Wing has a throaty sound. I have to say I was a bit emotional. This was very exciting – a brand new designed Gold Wing and we were here to ride it and give feedback. Since our helmets hadn’t paired we had no intercom, but I noticed right away I could talk with JR and he heard me without the intercom. As we waited our turn, I found the seat position was incredibly comfortable. I was sitting more upright, not leaning back like I do on our 2007. Personally I liked that. I felt very much a part of the bike. I’ve always believed the co-rider is a vital team member on the bike, and this bike seems to know this like no other. The bike, rider and corider are one on this ride. As we rode I noticed I wasn’t getting as much wind. I wasn’t getting that wind noise in my helmet as badly. I had a camera in one hand and m cellphone in m ac et poc et in case ot brave enough to take pictures, which I did. Going through the course, the bike leaned very naturally. I never felt uncomfortable not being in control of the bike. I truly felt integrated and a part of this ride. JR seemed to take to the DCT. I rela ed ri ht awa and en o ed this er smooth ride from the suspension to the DCT. As JR got more comfortable handling the bike, our speed picked up and the bike was more responsive. It wasn’t long and I was looking to turn the seat heater down. Wait, me turn the heater down? I realized the air bubble on the bike was very different. JR said we had the windshield all the way up. What I experienced was where the air bubble was. When I took my cellphone out to take video of the ride, which I posted on Facebook, I could feel it when I put my hand outside the bubble. It was 37 degrees and I was warm. I didn’t put m electric ac et liner on until the afternoon and then I had to turn it and the seat down. The air protection for the co-rider is much, much better! We rode for about two and a half hours, took a break for lunch and then were out for another three or four hours. hen we finished for the da , could say I love the new seat. What I was concerned about never came to be – this is one comfortable seat! Also, this new model only had stock armrests, but didn t find m self missin m armrests on the 2007. It is a very natural seating position. Well, I did miss the armrests to grab on to when JR found out how good the ABS was and I slid forward. I have never been one to use the grab rails, it’s never

Feature

been comfortable to me and these feel the same. In this case they are not a grab-through bar as on prior models, but a rail you grab from underneath. You’ll have to test this for yourself and tell me how they worked for you. I love the new ride, from the comfort and feel of the bike, to the aerodynamics. It’s enough to make me consider being a co-rider again. It brought back all the great memories of riding with my honey and sharing those special times together. Will we get a new one? Probably two! Last tidbits from both Does the bike seem smaller or narrower? Actually, it didn’t. It’s so well balanced it feels like a wonderful, sporty touring bike. Is the storage noticeably less? We did get both of our helmets in the trunk but there wasn’t anything else in there. The side bags do seem smaller. I am going to look at it this way, when we went from the 1200 to the 1500, storage changed. When we went from the 1500 to the 1800, the storage was changed and reduced. So this model will change it again, and we will ad ust. or a wee ender, belie e ou d be fine. trun ba or a cooler rac would suffice. or lon er trips, we ll hoo up a trailer know, don’t tell Honda). We do suggest you take time to get to know the dash and where everything is before you ride. There is so much this dash can do. JR is thrilled that the bike’s GPS is automatically on now so there’s no more having to stop to press the enter button. Pairing of helmets to the bike takes a bit of getting used to. Remember that unless you put it in private mode, it’s like a party line for all to hear. The key fob is like a car fob, but it has safety features your car’s doesn’t. You can turn this fob off so if you’ve parked but are near your bike, someone can t ust et on and ride awa . ood thinking Honda! As they said when the GL1800 came out – and it’s still true this time – don’t ride it until you are ready to buy one. Now, which colors?

BLOWING AWAY THE

COMPETITION By Gary Peddle

A couple of simple tips to clean your bike

I

currently own a 2015 40th Anniversary GL1800 Gold Wing, which I have dressed up a little. I frequently get complimented on it and also get asked how I get it so clean. I know everyone has their own particular method of washing and cleaning their bikes, but on the suggestion of a friend, I thought I would share a simple trick with you. While you are washing the bike (I use Turtlewax car wash) and before you rinse, take a 1-inch soft bristle paint brush (unused of course) and simply dip it in the bucket of soap and give all those little nooks and crannies a going over with the soapy brush. This allows you to get into areas you would normally not be able to with a typical washcloth or sponge. It takes very little effort and after rinsing and drying, you will see a noticeable difference in the overall cleanliness of the bike. Oh, and to speed up the drying process ‌ use a leaf blower to get most of the water off! Gary Peddle lives in Kirkland, Quebec.

Trikes

A trip to California Sidecar B Donald ranfill

I

n September of 2017 our region held its annual rally, Wings over the Smokies, in Waynesville, North Carolina. We usually have a few vendors from different trike manufacturers show up. This year, California Sidecar was there. Since my wife, Helen, owns a Sidecar kit on her 1800, we decided to stroll down to chat with the representative, always looking for any improvements they might have. Helen’s trike is a 2008, 9 years old. All warranties have long since expired. Helen’s trike was built during a time when California Sidecar had a problem with the driveline underneath. They put out word that the trike needed to be repaired either at the factory or b a certified onda dealer. his problem was not present in all bikes, but it still needed to be addressed. I had taken the time to call the factory for more information and was told I should get it looked at to see if our trike was in the group that had the problem. Since I do all of my maintenance on my bike and on Helen’s trike, I asked if I could just keep an eye on it with the understanding that I would not hold California Sidecar responsible for anything that might happen. This I agreed to. Helen and I did a good bit of riding this past summer, always with the fear that the driveline could break or come apart. This was a thought I did not like. So after arriving at the tent for CSC and introducing

40

ourselves, I asked about any improvements to the driveline. I was told about a complete upgrade that had been made for the year of the trike with the problems we had. The price would end up being in the $1,000 range and all things would be corrected. This was indeed good news. After returning home from the Wings Over the Smokies, I decided to call CSC about the upgrades. I was introduced to a gentleman by the name of Dwight Harrington. A very delightful man to talk with, after about an hour of conversation with Mr. Harrington, I had an appointment to bring Helen’s trike up to Arrington, Virginia, were the factory is located. We live less than 200 miles from Arrington so this was working out to our benefit. Knowing we would most likely be there overnight I started looking for accommodations. I needed a place that was pet-friendly because we have a small dog that Helen would not even think of leaving with our local kennel at home. I found a very nice bedand-breakfast in the area – Harmony Hill B&B. This is a very large log home built for the sole purpose of being a B&B. It has private showers in each apartment. The host is such a super nice person. She went out of her way to accommodate Helen and me and our dog, Patches. The home is just so beautiful. If any of you are going to this area, Harmony Hill B&B is the place to go. It cannot be beat. Since we were in the cold months of approaching

winter, I made our appointment for Dec. 13. Yes, as it turned out, it was very cold there and the winds blew all day. I was so glad I had decided to transport the trike with my enclosed trailer. I arrived at CSC around : a.m. went inside to find r. arrin ton and let him now we were there. bout fi e minutes later, we were outside in the trailer getting the trike unhooked and unloaded. By 8:30 a.m. the trike was inside and on a lift and there were two guys working as fast as they could to get the body ready to take it off of the bike. After Helen and I had given them all of the information they had asked for, we went into the waiting room, which was the break room. About 45 minutes later, one of the guys came in and asked us to come to the bike, there was something that we needed to see. Not knowing if this was going to be good or bad, we went to the bike. They had the body off and were standing around the rear of the bike. They asked that we come as close to the bike as possible. We were looking in on the

independent suspension and, of course, I did not immediately see any problems other than the dirt that had accumulated there. They pointed to three different places on the frame stabilizer mounts that were broken. These were in places I could not have seen by looking underneath. I usually have the bike in the air when I am servicing it. I make sure to take a small light and try to do a good job of looking for anything that might be wrong. I could not have seen these breaks. I told them to repair this, not by welding but by replacing the broken parts with new and better desi ned and beefier parts. he agreed to this. Helen’s trike has just a little over 49,000 miles on it. I would not have believed these parts could have broken if I had not seen it. I had just replaced a wheel bearing we found to be bad while at Wings over the Smokies. I have been a mechanic for many years as an owner/operator trucker and find it hard to belie e that had not seen these broken parts. If I had not decided to take the trike to the factory, we still would not have known about it. The two techs, Will and Scott, did their jobs well in findin the bro en parts and repairin them. t is probably safe to say they may have saved Helen’s life. There is no way to know when these might have come apart and caused a bad accident. To the employees of California Sidecar, we thank you more than you possibly can know. These two techs took about six hours to complete the work that they did. By 3:30 p.m., I was loaded and ready to head home. CSC was very fair to us when it came time to pay the bill. They stood behind their wor manship and m bill reflected their belief in treating the customer with love and care. Many thanks to California Sidecar. b r e a k GWRRA Member John Henry invents the Heads Up Braking System

S

ome of you met John J. Henry at Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, Texas, where he was a vendor. Henry invented the Heads Up Braking (HUB) System. If you’re not familiar with the HUB system, it is a fully functional elevated wireless brake light system that provides additional safety while riding your motorcycle. Henry and his wife, Julie, are members of GWRRA Minnesota Chapter Q and the proud owners of a Blue and Gray 2013 Gold Wing, which Henry calls the “Blue Beast” or “Trailer Queen” after towing it to Texas in 2017. The pair have been married for almost 33 years. Henry graduated from the University of Minnesota earning both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. Fast forward a few years with their young son, Jonathan, in tow, hard times hit the family. Like most effected by a down economy, they survived. They worked together dipping deep into their savings to pay everyone they owed no matter how long it took. Henry vowed to never be caught off guard from being dependent on anyone else for his livelihood again. With his feet back on solid ground, Henry embarked on the most adventurous journey of his lifetime – the true American dream of owning his own business. nner ision enr nc. was born and his first product was the Heads Up Braking System. Drawing on his military experience in communications and electronics from Control ata Corporation, he desi ned the first protot pe of his thingamajig as his wife Julie called it (now known as the Heads Up Braking System or HUB for short). With two U.S. patents in hand he hired the best en ineers and electronic firms he could afford to take it to the next level, paying for their services as he went and most of the times paying in advance. He was still met with missed deadlines after missed deadlines in deference to the firm s other customers, who could afford to pay more for that extra attention. There were hard choices and tough lessons to be learned along the way. Henry

44

admits that as a U.S. Army veteran he wanted nothing more than to build his product in the U.S. but sadly it was not to be. As a new, small startup company with little money, none of the six U.S. manufacturers he approached were in a position to help. With no bank funding, no Small Business Administration help, no Angel funding or support and now out of options, he was forced to accept the fact that he was on his own. Like a true entrepreneur, Henry did what he had to do and sought out several manufacturers outside of the U.S. that were willing to take a risk on his product and his company. “I remember struggling with that decision and wondering what people would think of me or worse yet, what would they would say when they held my HUB System in their hands and didn’t see ‘Made in America’ on it? Would they understand that I did everything I could do to build it here? Would they understand that if I could have built it here, the price of the HUB System would have been nearly three times the price it is now?” Despite that and the ever-lingering question “Will they (my customers) believe in me?” Henry dug his heels in and built the best product he could build. Features include: deceleration detection, which automatically activates the light on the helmet and your factory brake light when decelerating without touching your brakes; automatic nighttime dimming (which is controlled by the Kelatronic system that predetermines how bright the helmet light should be based on your surroundings); and a proximity system (also called rider visual location). The list goes on. nner ision enr has fi e new products waiting to be launched in various industries all based on what he calls the Kelatronics technology. In the meantime, the Henrys will be at Wing Ding 40 in Knoxville this August. They say to make sure you stop by their booth and say hello. They will show you what they’ve been working on.

Making a better world, one Wing at a time Australian hospitality by fellow Gold Winger By Lloyd Messner

I

n the spring of 2016, I received one of the most unusual messages via an online gaming board from a fellow Winger in Western Australia. I had only known him through association on my daily visits to the site and bucking heads with this Aussie fellow named Mario. It was approximately four years prior that he asked me in an email if I would enjoy reading some Aussie motorcycle magazines and within a couple of weeks, four rather large bike mags from that country arrived at my doorstep in Virginia. They are large ones and when I noticed the postage was around $43, it blew my mind. Often receiving gifts from this individual, whom I had no clue who he was, I received the jolt of a lifetime. On the gaming website message board, a message said, “What would you do if you received an envelope from Australia with a round-trip ticket in it?” And it followed with the statement that all it would cost me would be my trip to the airport and food I wished to purchase on the fli hts. ow hat would ou do I rushed to tell my wife, “Mario wants me to come to Australia.” Mary quickly responded, ou can t o. t s too lon a fli ht. thin her quick response was because of my trip to Austria and the Alps two years ago at age 78 and the extremely long commute. But I quickly responded to Mario’s request and answered that I would be pleased to do so, that I’m in pretty good health, enjoy riding and the trip was on. Over the months we delayed the trip for better weather during spring in Australia and so he could

Members fit m isit into his bus wor routine. prepared both physically and mentally for a trip to visit a stranger – over 11,000 miles from home – in a land that has some of the world’s worst public enemies, snakes, sharks and the like. Many people questioned my sanity and couldn’t believe I would risk traveling that far to live with someone whom I didn’t know and didn’t even know his stature. Shortly after accepting Mario’s offer, one morning he sent an unusual message. It said, “Wombat, we overlooked one very important thing.” I thought, “Oh no, he got cold feet.” But what he and his sweetheart of 31 years said was, “We overlooked Mary. Please ask her to come with you.” Another big wow. These strangers would offer the trip of a lifetime to two old people from the U.S. My wife graciously declined due to health issues. Mario and I continued communicating through the summer months so my arrival would coincide with the beginning of their spring. With weather being uncontrollable, spring was delayed. But that didn’t slow down the scouring of Western Australia on two or four wheels. Upon arrival at Perth Airport in early September, was reeted b one of the finest ustralian motorcyclists you’d ever wish to meet. This man began to treat me immediately like family and when I got to meet Wendy, it was likewise. Mario recalled I had owned a Burgman 650 scoot and he purchased a like-new 2-year-old one to further enliven my visit instead of riding his backup bike, a beautiful Moto Guzzi tourer. On our trip

from the airport, we dropped b his office and drove the scoot home following him on the wrong side of the roads and enjoying the roundabouts. During the period I lived as family with these two and their beloved four-legged member, ha , lac ed for nothin . end was the finest organic cook and entertainer, who sings in a local rock ’n’ roll band, and she kept assuring me they were so pleased that I could come. They are surely the elite of what friends can be and help to improve the human race. I discovered one day at an outing with close friends how the trip came about. Mario is a hard-working man. He runs a construction business that installs ma or water, sewer and fire protection devices in large buildings and has little competition. He is one busy individual. e had discussed with end the difficulties of traveling to the States to visit me due to his mother’s health issues and her (Wendy’s) musical career. Somehow, the suggestion arose that it might be easier to bring him (me) there, and that’s how this friendship came to happen. And I am so pleased and fortunate to have been a part of their scheme. My travels and pictures of this most unusual “life event” were even posted online thanks to Mario. Mario and Wendy should be applauded for their unwavering generosity, kindness and support making one old Wombat Warrior Biker/Golfer/World Traveler, a man with an unbreakable grin on his face. They are super individuals. Australia should be proud.

OVERSEAS COUPLE OF THE YEAR IN

GRAPEVINE By Rina and Gideon Bar-Tal

W

ing Ding 39 took place in Grapevine, Texas, the summer of 2017. Over 5,000 riders participated in the annual motorcycle event, celebrating 40 years in the place where they do everything big – the state of Texas and Gaylord Texan Resort Hotel and Convention Center. It was also where festivities for the annual International Couple of the Year (COY) selection and Overseas Couple of the Year event of 2017-18 took place. We arrived at Grapevine in order to receive our Overseas Couple of the Year award. At the same time, the International Couple of the Year selection process took place and the number of competitors was impressive. Both of these events kicked off Wing Ding, startin a couple of da s prior to the official openin . The Welcome Party for the couples in a small and cozy downtown Grapevine restaurant seemed awkward to us at first. e didn t now a soul ut soon thereafter, all participants embraced us with much TLC and we ne er felt li e stran ers a ain As dinner and dessert ended – gift giving began. Bev and Ron Clark, the couple in charge of the Overseas and International COY competition, gave us notice ahead of time that gifts were in order. We were to bring a small gift representing our country to be exchanged with the other couples. We brought a ceramic and handmade Hamsa (lucky talisman shaped like a hand for good luck) and a key chain with the emblem of Jerusalem, the Holy City, for each couple. We were surprised and stunned, when all the other couples (eight total) came with huge bags containing huge gifts and we only had our tiny gift bags. A bit embarrassed but quickly returning to our senses, we announced that at our end of the world we say, “size does not count.” Everyone had a good laugh and we know today that several couples have hung the Hamsa in their homes for good luck. he final C competition too place the followin day. We were exempt from participating because we were elected previously, before arriving in Grapevine. It was interesting to us to see the couples competing for first place. he wore matchin clothes with matchin colors and invested a great deal of effort in the way they looked and acted. In front of judges and an audience, they recited timed speeches and answered questions for points, given by the judges sitting in the front row.

48

Excitement was in the air and for us – it was something different and new to experience. The winning COY for 2017-18 were Randy and Kathy Reese from Texas. Toward the end of this event, we were called on stage to receive our medals, award and GWRRA Certificate of ppreciation as erseas Couple of the Year 2017-18. We were asked to speak to the large audience in the great hall, and we each shared our experiences as very active GWRRA Members. We used the opportunity to thank Rachel and Dan Sanderovich, Deputy Directors Overseas, for their help and support and to our many Israeli Gold Wing Club Members, all 25 of them, for coming to cheer, support and enjoy the moment at Grapevine with us. We introduced ourselves, shared trips we have taken on motorbikes around the world, and our numerous activities with in srael, which prepared and ualified us to receive the prestigious award. The award was given for our many years of directing the local Israeli GWRRA Chapter, where we enlisted some 60 new Members. Simultaneously, we arranged professional lectures, some through the internet with American instructors, as well as translating lectures and instructional movies from English to Hebrew to make it easier on our Chapter Members to share. We invested much time in developing the “social club,” and for more women to join both as Members and in Chapter activities – all in order to enable a pleasant and more sociable atmosphere with emphasis on mutual/co-riding, rider and partner, while keeping in mind proper and safe riding skills. When we left for this GWRRA gathering in Texas, so far away from home, we didn’t know what to expect. The intensity of the experience was above and beyond our expectations. We will remember this breathtaking time and cherish it for years to come. We encourage whoever wishes to partake in the election of Overseas Couple of the Year or International Couple of the Year award, to have no fear. Dare, go for it, and enjoy each and every moment. Many thanks to all the organizers and wonderful people who hosted us: GWRRA President Anita Alkire, the whole GWRRA Team, all competing COY couples, Bev and Ron Clark, Rachel and Dan Sanderovich, Israeli Chapter Director Roger Hefez, and all our Israeli friends who made it all the way to Texas.

but my progress was slow. I stalled the bike twice at busy intersections and laid it down twice – returning to and leaving my driveway. Slow speeds were a problem for me. Also, I began feeling pain in my left hip and resulting weakness in my left leg that was getting worse over time. I eventually became apprehensive about being out practicing my skills with a hip that was bothering me and a weakened leg. Also, winter was coming on, so it was time to put the bike away and consider my options at a later date. An examination by an orthopedic specialist resulted in m first cortisone shot in m left hip and a heads-up on the possibility of hip replacement surgery in the not too distant future. Springtime arrived and though my hip felt better, I realized my learning curve for motorcycle riding skills was back to zero. I was torn because I felt I still had the desire to ride but I had not overcome my fear and trepidation. My progress was not satisfactory to me and I was afraid I had made a mistake thinking I could get comfortable operating a motorcycle. I replaced the broken mirrors and advertised the bike for sale. A young fellow bought it and was very happy to get it. Fast-forward to one year later, second cortisone shot in the hip and my motorcycling urge still present, further plans were developing. I did a lot of thinking and investigating about options and concluded that a small scooter might be the thing for me. I probably should have started with a scooter. The smaller and lighter bike would be easier to handle and I could more easily build up m confidence b learnin to operate it. would be riding strictly on back roads rather than major highways and the automatic transmission would remove the necessity to engage a clutch during operation. Thus the result was my purchase of a used 2009 Kymco People 200 scooter. I had a blast! Every possible day that I could, I was out riding that entire season. Encountering no mishaps, felt more at ease and m confidence was growing. I was moving my learning curve upward. However I probably came to realize what most small scooter riders discover – I wanted more. ran out of bac roads. was not fulfilled. ore research was in the offin . As I put my scooter away for winter that year, I knew my hip was getting worse and a cortisone shot would probably not help. I began to do research on a trike. I scheduled hip replacement surgery for March of the following spring and advertised my scooter for sale. I wanted to make the most out of my desire to experience the open air that riding afforded by motorcycling and take into account my age, experience and physical situation. My research revealed that operating a trike

Other rides

removed quite a number of dangerous issues as compared to the motorcycle. I didn’t want to have a mishap that could jeopardize my new hip. Research led me to the Can-Am Spyder RT. As a nonlifelong motorcyclist with limited e perience, it seemed li e the ri ht fit for me. t is manufactured to be a trike and was available in clutch-less electronic shift. Several days after my surgery and still not cleared to drive a vehicle, I found a used 2011 Can-Am Spyder RT SE5 on Craigslist in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I called a friend who had a truck and trailer to see if he would take me to Pittsburgh to help me get my Spyder. He obliged, and March 20, 2012 I had my three-wheeler in the driveway. Once I was cleared to ride, I easily adapted to the techniques required to operate a trike and it has opened up a tremendous new world of great experiences. In the spring of 2013 I was invited to join the Bedford County Chapter of GWRRA, Pennsylvania Chapter W, known as the Warrior Riders, which meets in Everett. I enjoy being a part of the organization and feel accepted in the group. I am the only Spyder rider in the chapter and take a little good-natured ribbing at times, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am active in the chapter, which has provided many enjoyable experiences and the opportunity to make new friends. Chapter PA-W has also provided its members the necessar trainin for re certification in C . Overall I have found that GWRRA has a lot to offer its membership. On May 5, 2016 I traded in my 2011 Spyder on a new Red 2016 Can-Am Spyder RT Limited. I am having a wonderful time and have logged about 23,000 miles on it. When I look back over the past eight years, thinking about how things have transpired, I know I have found a great hobby that I love. Gary D. Unique day ride By Paul Wood

O

ne of the great things about GWRRA is the interaction between Chapters. While this usually happens within a District, sometimes it transcends those boundaries. Take for example Idaho Chapter B’s POTATO photo tour. The challenge suggested by Idaho B is to ride to a series of towns/cities having the initial letter of their names that spell the word “potato.” Photos are taken of the riders and their bikes in front of a sign with the town’s name in it. These pictures, a registration form, and a small fee go to Idaho B Chapter Directors. In return, the riders receive a nice pin. Joe and Maxine Piland, from Texas Chapter R, found the listing for this ride in Wing World in early 2015. Joe contacted ID-B’s Chapter Directors Jack and Gayle Turner for more details. Turns out that nobody had done this tour as a Chapter ride with towns outside the Chapter’s home state as destinations. The idea was brought before the TX-R Leadership Team and got unanimous support. Joe found several small towns in southern Oklahoma that met the criteria and also found many nice roads connecting them. A ride date was set for May 23, 2015. Unfortunately, one of the wettest springs in Texas and Oklahoma history caused the ride to be

52

canceled. Roads were covered with water. In one case, a bridge washed away. A makeup date was set in July, but the day’s 104-degree temperature caused another cancellation. Another date was set for Nov. 15. During the course of all the delays, Joe and Maxine continued to check road conditions and made necessary route adjustments. Nov. 15 dawned cool, calm and partly cloudy. Since the participating riders came from across the DallasFort Worth metroplex, we agreed to meet at a gas station in Sherman, Texas, which is north of that area. Most riders had over an hour’s travel just to get to the meeting point. Once the riders meeting was completed at the as station, we headed to our first stop in latter, Oklahoma. Believe me, when nine Gold Wings, a Polaris Slingshot, and 12 people arrive in a town of 102 people, it makes a stir! We took our location picture at the post office. From there we took some great side roads through Silo to Tishomingo, Oklahoma (pop. 3,034). Our location pic was taken at the high school football stadium. Lunch at Cousin’s Food Depot was fantastic! Oakland (pop. 1,032) was our next stop, and we got our picture in front of the

local grocery store. It was funny the store’s sign was missing the “D” in “Oakland.” It was there the week before the ride. Ardmore (pop. 24,950) was our next stop. We staged the bikes so the location picture would contain the town name on the water tower. This turned out to be a little more interesting than anticipated, since the grass lot we parked in had been considerably softened by recent rains. The second “O” in our “potato” was Overbrook (pop. 477). Our picture was taken in front of the post office. hac er ille pop. was our second “T,” and our last stop. After a picture in front of the school, we stopped at the local park to discuss the fun we had, say our goodbyes and head back to our homes. The ride was a lot of fun and took us past lakes, horse farms, cattle farms, small homes and large estates. The ride from Sherman to Thackerville took about three hours and was 140 miles. Including travel to and from the ride, most of the participants were on the road at least six hours. It felt good to be part of a tour set up by Idaho Chapter B, which is about 1,900 miles away from us. GWRRA sure makes some great things possible. Think about the connections. Jack and Gayle Turner live in the state of Washington,

and are Directors of Chapter B in Idaho. Their photo tour strikes the interest of Joe and Maxine Piland in Krum, Texas. In turn, they lead a group of people from Texas Chapters G2 and R for a tour in southern Oklahoma! Now several of us have beautiful “Idaho POTATO” pins proudly displayed on our vests. Product Review

A Long Ride Shields Taka Windshield story

I

n January of 2015, Sierra Eagles (NV-E) Chapter Directors George Woodside and Carol Hannigan received a phone call from the management of Long Ride Shields. They wanted to discuss the designing and testing of an aftermarket windshield for Gold Wings. Long Ride Shields is a division of Quality Plastics, a 40-year-old company in Sparks, Nevada, adjacent to the Sierra Eagles home in Reno. Long Ride Shields had started in the windshield business some seven years earlier with products for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and had since added products for Indian and Victory bikes. They had been researching the market for Gold Wing windshields for more than two years before making the decision to proceed with product development. They next conducted an interview with George and Carol that lasted over two hours. They asked about a wide variety of topics including not only Gold Wing windshields, but also Gold Wing riders and co-riders, their riding habits, personalities and preferences. They also discussed windshield characteristics such as vision, clarity, tinting, wind deflection, wind noise, rider and passen er comfort, vents, rain shedding, abrasion resistance,

54

and more. They incorporated information from that discussion into their initial design and requested the Reno Chapter’s assistance in testing the prototypes. Five couples responded to that request: Joan and Bill Cuppett, Ken and Sue Pouliot, John and Marge Higley, Ken and Gail Crow, and George and Carol. This group of Wingers provided a mix of 1500s, 1800s, bikes and trikes. Testing was done with acrylic prototypes of windshield shapes, because of the ease of forming the acr lic material. he final products would be made of polycarbonate, which is much stiffer and far more scratch resistant. The new windshields were designated the “Taka” line, using the Japanese word meaning hawk or falcon. The windshields have a “recurve” desi n, a flipped up top ed e. hat cur e at the top of the windshield chan es the airflow dramatically. That recurve, plus the increased radius of the windshield, results in a completely different airflow from the stoc windshield. The impact on the rider, and even more so the passenger, is a greatly diminished amount of buffeting and wind noise. And, when riding in cold weather, the wind chill is vastly reduced.

2/15/18 12:04 PM

Product Review Prototypes included different sizes of windshields, including one with the same height as the stock Gold Wing windshield, a model that was two inches shorter, and another that was four inches taller. Early testing resulted in a variety of comments from the fi e riders, and far more feedbac from the co-riders. The difference in wind and noise for the co-riders was dramatic. The recurve top, and the wider flare of the a a desi n made all the co riders much more comfortable riding, and all were unanimous in their approval of the effectiveness of the new windshield. As testing progressed, feedback from the riders and co riders resulted in desi n refinements until everyone was pleased with the last round of prototypes. Long Ride Shields also took the test team on tours of the manufacturing plant, explained the processes used to make the molds, heatin and formin the material, and finishin the products.

During testing, it was discovered the cutout for vented windshields was consistent for all 1500 models, but that there was a design change in the 1800 series. 2001 through 2004 1800s required a different vent hole than later models. While some riders preferred the shorter models, and others the taller ones, the overall opinion was unanimous: every one of the riders liked the windshields better than the stock windshield. The recurve design allows riders who prefer to look over their windshield to position the top of the Taka below their sight line, while the recurve deflects the wind hi h enou h to clear their heads and helmets. Even in this lowered position, co-riders were still protected from the wind blast. And, all the riders quickly found that their coriders insisted that none of them ever put the stock windshields back on. Now, some three years later, all the original testers are still using Taka windshields. The Taka was so well-liked by Wingers everywhere that Long Ride Shields is now an advertiser in Wing World, a popular presence at Wing Dings, and a sponsor of events at other Gold Wing rallies.

Knoxville comes full cycle By Visit Knoxville

K

noxville has had many nicknames over the years. Marble City, Scruffy City and the Dirty South come to the minds of those who know the city well. Yes, Knoxville is a college town. It’s also a biking destination. This is true for Gold Wing riders throughout the country, but for the purposes of this story, we’re taking about nonmotorized bikes. Riders from around the world are recognizing Knoxville as an excellent destination for mountain biking. The city offers some of the most enjoyable, scenic and (for those who want it) challenging trails in the Southeast. Knoxville’s year-round mild weather is an added benefit. hen trails in other regions are snowed in or just too cold, these trails pro ide ust the fi . he fact that these trails are just minutes from downtown makes the adventure even more appealing. Just three miles from downtown, Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness boasts more than 50 miles of connected trail for all levels of cyclists. The variety of rocky and dirt terrain trails wind along the Tennessee River, deep quarries, a rock

60

climbing area and impressive overlooks. Trails within this system range from a kid’s loop to the Devil’s Racetrack, a professionally designed and constructed 0.8-mile extreme downhill trail. All of these trails were built and continue to be maintained by the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club (AMBC). A new BMX Park is slated to open Spring/Summer 2018. A 10 to 15-minute drive from downtown will land you on additional trails at Fort Dickerson, I.C. King Park, Sharp’s Ridge and more. Add another minutes and ou ll find windin networ s of mountain bike trail along a sparkling lake at Loyston Point or a downhill park with shuttles at Windrock Park. Knoxville also serves as a great home base for day trips to regional trail systems. You can hit a variety of trails within a couple of hours, enjoy them to the fullest and have plenty of time to come back and enjoy top notch lodging, food, brew and spirits in Knoxville. For those who prefer a smoother ride, Knoxville offers more than 85 miles of greenway (all paved

or composed of crushed rock) that connect cyclists to some of Knoxville’s most popular destinations. These include the UT Campus, World’s Fair Park and the Sunsphere, the Tennessee River and Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. Historic sites, parks, restaurants and attractions can also be found along the routes. For those who don’t have a bike of their own and want to explore the city, Knoxville has just launched a partnership with Pace, a new nationwide bike sharing service powered by Zagster, the leading provider of bike share programs for cities. This “dockless” bike system allows visitors to unlock bikes

throughout the city through a simple app. It’s a great option for our Gold Wing friends to hop on a different kind of bike for a few hours. Knoxville’s love for biking is evident and quite possibly at an all-time high. Knoxville will host the USA Cycling Pro Road and Time Trial National Championships for a second consecutive year June 2124, 2018. This year, the Criterium Championships will take place in Knoxville as well. Come join us for this exciting event and get a feel for this great city before YOUR big event Aug. 29-Sept. 1. Knoxville. hile traveling through the mountains of North Carolina, I decided to visit a town called Franklin. A friend from Panama City, Florida, where we both live, recommended a place to visit called Wayah Creek Cottages. The day’s journey started in Andrews, North Carolina, traveling on Highway 129 and then onto Main Street to Junaluska Road, which parallels the Nantahala River. Junaluska Road intersects with Wayah Road, aka The Wolf. The scenery, the switchbacks and curves ... oh my! The road is less traveled than the Dragon so use caution and beware of loose gravel. Wayah Road travels around Nantahala Lake. The address of

Wayah Creek Cottages is 610 Wayah Road. Their driveway is a brid e leadin to the office and then to the cottages. I parked my 2008 Gold Wing on the gravel parking lot and walked around with the sound of chirping birds and the babbling creek. After watching the water rushing under the bridge for about 30 minutes or so, it was time to go. I was at total peace with a clear mind and no worries while visiting this area. When it was time to get back on the highway and head toward Robbinsville via The Dragon, I walked up to my Gold Wing and glanced at the surroundings. Seeing my bike with the picturesque background, I knew this would be my favorite photo of all time, excluding the ones with my wife. I would now like to share this place and photo, and other photos, with the Members of GWRRA.

UPDATES FROM THE FIELD Training

By Clara Boldt, Director, Training ; William McGowan, University Assistant

A

re you going to Wing Ding 40 in Knoxville this year? I hope you said yes because we are going to have a ball! GWRRA has saved Thursday for guided and self-guided rides. The GWRRA University is offering a Team Riding Class on Wednesday before the ride day, as well as the co-rider (RE Levels compliant) class to let our co-riders catch up on what they can do to help us stay safe. The Riding Mountains Hills and Curves class looks to be fun and informative; why not attend it Wednesday afternoon in case you catch some twisties on Thursday. (Think Tail of the Dragon and other exciting rides!) If you do get into the twisties and think you could have done better, Riding Mountains Hills and Curves is being offered again Friday, so you could catch it then. Also on Friday, why not sit in on the Riding in the Heat class? The way global warming is going, we’re going to need to know that stuff, year-round pretty soon. Attending the Level up/My RE class Friday will help you understand what is required to stay current in Rider Ed. Along with what is required for the Levels Program, My RE is hands-on (bring your laptop/iPad/smartphone). This “How To” gives you step-by-step instructions to access your personal data in the Rider Ed database. How cool is that? It’s right around the corner. Set some time aside to attend the classes of your choice. More class information next month.

Motorist Awareness - Are you addicted By Cliff and Char Simpson, Assistant Directors, Motorist Awareness Program

R

ecently I heard this on the evening news: “You may be addicted to your cellphones!” That startled me – addicted? Searching the internet revealed that this phenomenon has been studied for several years. In a new book, “Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked,” social psychologist Dr. Adam Alter warns that many of us – adults, teenagers, youngsters are addicted to modern di ital products. ot fi urati el but literall addicted. In the past, we thought of addiction as mostly related to chemical substances: heroin, cocaine, nicotine. Today we have this phenomenon of behavioral addictions where people are spending nearly three hours a day tethered to their cellphones. Some of us sleep with our phones beside our bed so we can check email during the night! We are biologically prone to getting hooked on these kinds of experiences. We are engineered in such a way that when an experience triggers the right buttons, our brains will release the neurotransmitter dopamine. e ll et a flood of dopamine that ma es us feel wonderful in the short term, thou h in the long term you build a tolerance and want more. Now I know why I reach for my cellphone the second it starts to ring! Source:https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/06/science/technology-addiction-irresistible-by-adam-alter.html

Guillermo Lopez-Negrete, GWRRA #324346 2008 Candy Red GL1800 and 2004 Valkyrie Rune Milton, Ontario This is a photo of me with my 2008 Gold Wing 1800 cc and my 2004 Valkyrie Rune, Illusion Blue. It was taken a day before our departure to Asheville, North Carolina, for a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway the second week of June 2017. It was spectacular. As always, my Wing performed flawlessly the entire 3,000 kilometers. I use the Rune for shorts rides around town.
