A Journey In Mercy
HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 2015-16 Page 14
Dear Alumnae, Students, Parents, Faculty, Staff and Friends: At Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School, we believe that the goal of education is to develop and nurture the whole person: intellectually, spiritually, morally, physically, emotionally and socially. As I reflect on the past year and consider the next, I continue to marvel at all that the academy is capable of accomplishing — with each one of you — in our collective commitment to the growth and success of young Mercy women. Forging ahead in our responsibility to educate 21st-century learners, we have set out to inspire stimulating engagement in science with the construction of a new chemistry lab. Designed to be a stateof-the-art learning space, the new lab features a wall coated with “Idea Paint” where students can work creatively and collaboratively. Challenging, enriching, and hands-on curricular experiences will bring this new lab to life in our ongoing efforts to transform teaching and learning, and to equip our students with the skills necessary to become future leaders in science and innovation. Uniting intellect with spirituality, 11 of our students and two of our teachers traveled to Haiti last spring, where they immersed themselves in the culture, interacted with the natives, learned about the empowerment of women, and performed community service. They painted. They picked crops. They partnered with an all-girls elementary school where they made bracelets, and friends. Most of all, they returned home graced and gifted — ever more grateful for the opportunities they have been given, and deeply devoted to their identity as women of Mercy who make a difference in the lives of others. Beyond involvement in a variety of meaningful service projects this year, our community will be engaged in many activities that will serve to promote a holistic education. In athletics and the arts, our students look ahead to another year of achievements after earning two AACA League Championships last year, and performing at such prestigious venues as Longwood Gardens and the State Capitol. To foster wellness, our faculty has participated in mental health training and our students are receiving similar programming in the classroom. Calling attention to the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy, our ministry team will focus the lens of their efforts on the topic of racism and respect for one another. With the November conclusion of Jubliee Year of Mercy, I ask that we hold all the members of our Mercy community in prayer, as we recall the emphasis that Pope Francis has placed on the power of mercy: “Let us be renewed by God’s mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of his love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace flourish.” In Mercy,

A Journey to Haiti
in the Spirit of Mercy
Never could we have imagined how one city in a country 1,484 miles away from our homes could impact us in the way it did! by Erica DeCandido ‘16
2
This day began like many other days during my last year at Gwynedd. As a senior,
I sat on the benches near the windows overlooking the softball fields, grateful for the senior privilege of having different places to study. I vividly remember the corridor door opening, and I saw Sister Bernadette Duross, RSM, our Director of Mission Integration and Effectiveness, walking toward me. Mr. Fromhold, our School Minister, was with her, looking almost as distressed as she did. A million thoughts rushed through my head as the two adults began to give me a brief explanation of how the group of applicants were beyond impressive for our Haiti Immersion trip. At that moment, Sister Bernadette Author Erica DeCandido ’16 (below center) is now in her freshman year finally exclaimed, “I’m sorry to tell you Erica….but you’re going to Haiti!” Before I knew at Tufts University. it, I was engulfed with hugs from fellow applicants who were also chosen. I could not believe my ears! Although this would be my second time traveling to the adored country of Haiti, I felt more excitement knowing that I would be going with the Mercy sisters I’ve come to know throughout my four years at Gwynedd. With emotions of excitement and nervousness filling my head, I knew the first thing I could do to prepare started with communicating with my fellow classmates who were also selected. It meant so much to us to be a part of Gwynedd’s first school-sponsored international service trip. In order to make this trip extraordinary, the planning ensued quickly. We began to prepare with meetings after meetings as well as numerous email exchanges. Yet, nothing could fully prepare the group of 11 young girls and two adult chaperones for what we were about to experience. No one knew what to expect; no one knew how powerful this trip would be for each of us. As the ever so anticipated date crept closer, the group learned more about the trip and met important people associated with it. We traveled with a group called ‘Focus on Haiti,’ which is a Sisters of Mercy project. Throughout this trip, we would explore and help in a small town called Gros Sr. Mary Sullivan, R.S.M. and alumna Andi Land Healy ’80, from the “Focus on Haiti” Morne, just four hours from the city center of Port-au-Prince. project, led the students on their service trip. Along this journey, two incredible women, Sister Mary Sullivan, RSM and Mrs. Andi Land Healy ’80 would be our life lines. These two empowering women showed us the ropes and shared some laughs with the group along the way.
3
That night was filled with music, dancing, and laughter. In those hours, no barriers existed. Language did not matter. It didn’t matter whether we were from Haiti or Pennsylvania. In that moment, we were simply living as Mercy sisters, together as one.
4
Within the short time in which we lived in Haiti, the service we completed included physical, spiritual, and emotional work. Whether nailing in mosquito nets, painting classrooms, or simply spending time playing with the kids, there was never a time when a smile did not appear on every single face. Each day concluded with Sister Mary Sullivan, RSM leading a reflection with our group and our famous bus driver Papa and his nephew (and our personal translator) “T.” Within these talks, memories of the day were shared, observations contributed, and life lessons explored. Yet, at the end of each reflection, the conversation seemed to come full circle back to our connection to Mercy. Each action, each prayer, each reading brought with it the same assurance of why we were there, and the importance of each hour spent with the individuals with whom we came in contact. Therefore, there was no greater feeling than the palpable spirit of mercy which was present. This feeling became evident on one of the best nights of the trip. Every single girl can verify and expand upon their feelings about the night at the river. Here, we spent one entire evening with the extraordinary ‘Mercy Beyond Borders’ (MBB) girls. This organization provides girls from difficult situations in Gros Morne with an education, food, and shelter. Their ages ranged from 12 to 18 years. Therefore, we could easily relate and connect with these smart girls. It was during this time at the river that we bonded more than anyone could even begin to describe. The afternoon started with water guns, games, and splashes, but it ended with a much different atmosphere. The night was filled with music, dancing, and laughter. In those few hours, no barriers existed. Language did not matter. It didn’t matter whether we were from Haiti or Pennsylvania. In that moment, we were simply living as Mercy sisters, together as one. Although we thought the night had ended as we packed back onto the bus, it only strengthened the bond we had earlier created. A singing contest broke out between the MBB and Gwynedd girls. Our voices and songs did not reach the beauty and talent of the Haitians until they began to sing “In the Jungle” in their own language. At that point, the bus filled with each girl’s voice singing in English and Creole, causing this language barrier to become nothing that Mercy girls couldn’t break down. The ride ended with the singing of “Waka Waka,” another song that both groups could sing together. When the MBB girls filed out of the bus and Papa began to drive away, we were left in awe. Each person on that bus knew something special happened that night, something that could not be described to others in full detail and appreciation. Having experienced and met such inspiring women, the most important mission we could complete is to share their stories and to become their advocates. This can be a true testament to their empowering stories—to look for ways to continue our support when we return home. Each person we met during our journey to Gros Morne shed a little more light on the beautiful country in which they live. These people were not looking for handouts; they wanted to learn
to better themselves by developing a skill. For example, two women we met had their own business of selling reusable dinnerware. When asked how we could help, one eager student suggested that, “We can send you tablecloths. They kindly declined because people in Gros Morne can make these items themselves. Through this business, these women help the environment, and assist others to make the materials needed. This trip was not just to see the town or play with children; this was an experience of taking in and learning as much from the Haitian community as we could in six short days. The amazing aspect of this trip continues in the stories this group can tell others back home, but what cannot be explained or portrayed in pictures are the emotions felt, i.e. the goosebumps experienced when a starving young girl offers her only popsicle to you, or seeing the sadness in the eyes of a mother who cannot provide clean water for her own children. It is hard for the 13 of us who traveled and experienced this culture to wrap our heads around all that happened. Therefore, what we each wish to leave behind is inspiration, acknowledgment, and a sense of Mercy spirit. I hope to leave the impact of our stories, our pictures, and our passion to encourage others to lend their hands in the journey to make this world a little better each and every day. Never could we have imagined how one city in a country 1,484 miles away from our homes could impact us in the way it did! Never could we have imagined the special place those people now hold in our hearts! Each one of us left a little something of ourselves in Gros Morne, Haiti, and we took a little something from each person and each place that we visited.
The amazing aspect of this trip continues and what we each wish to leave behind is inspiration, acknowledgment and a sense of Mercy spirit. I hope to leave the impact of our stories, our pictures and our passion to encourage others to lend their hands in the journey to make this world a little better each and every day.
Gwynedd will continue to sponsor Service Trips for the Spring and Summer of this 2016-17 academic year. International Service Trips are planned for Gros Morne, Haiti in April and Belfast and Dublin, Ireland in July. National Service Trips are also being planned. The students, along with their faculty chaperones, are excited to continue the mission of Mercy throughout the world.

Is Ready to Take on the World! Graduation at the Academy is a time for celebration. A formal ceremony that marks the accomplishments and achievements of each graduate. It is also a reminder of the great traditions of Mercy that have been passed down over the years. Eighty-six graduates processed through the Performing Arts Center on Saturday, June 4, wearing traditional fulllength white gowns and gloves, carrying a dozen long-stem red roses at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School’s 155th Commencement Ceremony. The ceremony began with an invocation by Claire Kennedy ’16, who called the class together in prayer to celebrate the gifts, laughter and the tears that they had experienced together as a class. Claire is attending Pennsylvania State University. Maeve O’Brien ’16 gave the salutatory address, reflecting on the four years of high school. “Gwynedd not only taught us academics, but it also developed us into strong Christian women, true daughters of Catherine McAuley. During the ceremony, the class sang “I’ll Always Remember You” by Miley Cyrus, a song about the mixed emotions of saying goodbye and the excitement of what the future holds. After diplomas and medals were distributed, graduates were awarded for their extraordinary commitments to their education included the Mother Mary Bernard Gold Medal of Honor, Karen D’Lauro ’60 Gold Medal for School Spirit, 8
Sister Mary Loyola Gold Medal for Service, Mother Margaret Mary Gold Medal for Highest General Average, and the Michele Granozio ’86 Gold Medal for Leadership, Loyalty and Example of Christian Womanhood. Gold medals were also awarded for each subject area. (Recipients are listed on page 10.) Madeline Talecki ’16 gave the valedictory address and spoke about the sisterhood of Mercy. “We’ve constructed a sisterhood that knows no limits,” explained Talecki. “Not even leaving this building can limit the community we experienced and will carry with us.” Sister Christine McCann, RSM, who served as the Director of Sponsorship for the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community providing support for Boards and administrators for 18 sponsored ministries of the Mid-Atlantic Community, presided over the Commencement Ceremony. In her address to the graduates, she summarized the value of a Mercy eduction. “Your years at GMA challenged you to be a Mercy ‘unselfie,’ to be part of a larger picture of the global, political, social, economic and cultural realities that impact all of us. You have been encouraged to become women who will make a difference in the world, women who are empowered to influence the world positively.” Just as many classes before them, the graduates of the Class of 2016 entered Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School as young girls and walked across the stage to receive their diplomas as scholars and Mercy women, ready to take on the world.

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS What a tremendous year we had in 2015-16! With record turnout at events on and off campus, new traditions forged, and our most successful Mercy Fund to-date, our community is stronger through donors and friends like you to our wonderful community. Thank you to all of our alumnae, parents, parents of alumnae, friends and organizations that helped shape the 2015-16 school year. It is hard to believe the end of 2016 is quickly approaching. As we began this school year during the Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are reminded more of the challenges that shape our girls’ world each and every day. Through their first-hand experiences in and out of the classroom, they are preparing to be the compassionate leaders of the future, steeped in the traditions and teachings of Sister Catherine McAuley. To ensure that these experiences are continued into the future, your support through gifts of time, talent and philanthropy are essential. Part of the role of Advancement is to look with one eye towards the future, while preserving traditions of the past. This could not be more evident this year as we prepare to transition to a new leadership model — beginning with the selection of Gwynedd Mercy Academy’s first President — and towards an ambitious new project expanding the blueprint of our school. As you may know, in the past decade GMAHS has invested more than $8 million to deepen the impact of our creative arts, learning environments, technology and curriculum. These key initiatives have included the building of our Performing Arts Center and Arts Wing, the addition of a 21st-century Learning Commons space, a complete update of the Chemistry Lab, the addition of collaborative classrooms, a dramatic improvement of information technology and the expansion of AP and honors course offerings. The next step to furthering our impact on our students is through our greater vision for top-level athletics offerings. The first phase of this is a stadium synthetic turf field, an eight-lane track and an enhanced natural grass field. These additions will not only benefit our student athletes by providing state-of-the-art competitive surfaces, but will also provide facilities to benefit all of our students through use for events, physical fitness classes and student activities. The Circle of Mercy is Timeless... An invitation from Toots Cattie Fee ’61, Chairwoman of the Catherine McAuley Legacy Society: Please join the members of the Catherine McAuley Legacy Society in leaving a bequest to Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School. The Catherine McAuley Legacy Society honors the Foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. Membership in the Society recognizes the generosity and special foresight of those who contribute to the future of Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School. By naming us a beneficiary in your will and estate plans, you can make a positive and lasting impact on the future of Gwynedd by enabling us to fulfill our mission to educate young girls to become competent and compassionate Christian women. Service and giving is a Mercy tradition. For more than 150 years, a countless number of alumnae, friends and parents have made substantial contributions to the school. You are invited to join our long line of Mercy supporters by becoming a member of the Catherine McAuley Legacy Society by including a bequest in your will that names Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School as a beneficiary of your estate. A bequest is a flexible, time-honored way to establish a lasting legacy. After providing for loved ones, you may decide to make a charitable contribution of a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or all or part of what remains after all others have been remembered.

Lori Baiocchi King ‘93 became just the second person to swim
around the island of Bermuda. She covered the 36.5 mile swim in just over 21 hours, making her the fastest to swim around the island. For her incredible achievement, she was named Swimming World’s Performance of the Week. King began her swim at noon on June 15 and finished at 9:19 AM on June 16. She is the second solo swimmer to complete this feat (Sean O’Connell in 1976 swam the perimeter of the island in 43 hours) and the first woman. “This was a team effort,” Lori told Swimming World. “This was not my swim…I cannot own it. This would not have happened without the role that each of my incredible crew played. I owe this feat and share this incredible milestone in my career with all of them.”
The first Accelerated Scholars Program (ASP) Summit, designed to encourage intellectual curiosity and scholarship among top-performing middle school students in the Montgomery, Bucks and Philadelphia area who are interested in attending Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School, was offered for the first time this summer. The ASP is a chance for Gwynedd to connect with these students and give them an opportunity to relate to the school, its alumnae, its teachers and its students. Alumnae presenters included Angela Amarhanov ’08, Grace Foster ’10, Taylor Grimaldi ’07, Maura Weber ’10 and Allison Zaucha ’10.

Academic Excellence • As a college preparatory academy, Gwynedd prides itself on the rigorous academic programs that it offers. The addition of new honors and AP courses and other enhanced course selections have allowed our young women to explore their interests and strengthen their talents.
Each year our alumnae, parents, grandparents and friends make a difference at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School by philanthropically supporting
The Mercy Fund. Each member of our community will be invited to support the Mercy Fund throughout the year. This collective support enables Gwynedd to make an immediate impact on our Gwynedd Girls through academic excellence, technology, facilities, mission initiatives, scholarship and financial aid.
For more information, visit The Mercy Fund page at www.gmahs.org/give or contact Christine Burke ’07, Director of Annual Giving 215.646.8815 x410
Technology • The Learning Commons and Gwynedd’s “bring your own device policy” is just the beginning of the technological advances that are preparing our young women to face the 21st century with confidence and enthusiasm. These and other additions have created opportunities for critical thinking and collaborative learning in the classroom and around the world. Facilities • Continuous upgrades to the school building, particularly new furniture and enhanced smart boards, provide a strong foundation for learning. The Learning Commons and the renovated Chemistry Lab demonstrate Gwynedd’s commitment to future learning by providing these state-of-the-art facilities. Mission Initiatives • Gwynedd’s Mercy tradition provides a unique lens in which our young women learn and participate in extracurricular activities. These young women are transformed by the Mercy spirit through their encounters on retreats, service opportunities and in the halls of Gwynedd. Scholarship and Financial Aid • Gwynedd attracts talented and passionate young women to attend Gwynedd. Through specific scholarships for academics, music and art as well as financial aid, students are able to attend regardless of their financial background.
