Letter from the President President Denise Corkery Marbach ’72 presenting a graduation award to a member of the Class of 2020
Dear Friends, “The tender mercy of God has given us one another.” These words of Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, are more poignant than ever as I reflect on the unprecedented challenges of the last year and how the strength of our community, rooted in Mercy values, has helped us to emerge even stronger and more merciful as a School and as a Gwynedd Family. I am inspired by the attitude and spirit by which our entire community of students, faculty, staff, alumnae, parents, and friends have gone about their work and made personal contributions of time, talent, and treasure to ensure our academic excellence in virtual and hybrid fashions, to continue momentum on our strategic plan She is the Future, and to carry out our Mercy mission and traditions—all of which we celebrate in this report. We also celebrate the largest gift made by an individual in Gwynedd’s nearly 160-year history from alumna Joan McDermott Bellwoar ’51; the accomplishments of our Trocaire leadership, alumna service, and Athletic Hall of Fame honorees; the achievement and resilience of the Class of 2020; and the generosity of our donors who have made it possible for Gwynedd to hire our first Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Leader and to offer more financial aid than ever before in our history—nearly one million dollars. This increase is due in large part to growing alumnae and parent participation in the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) Programs. Together, we are accomplishing great things; and, with the ongoing gift of one another, I know we will continue to ensure Gwynedd’s mission to educate, inspire, and empower young women to be merciful in spirit, innovative in thought, and courageous in leadership for generations to come. In Mercy,
Denise Corkery Marbach ’72, P’05, ’09 President
HISTORIC GIFT The late Joan McDermott Bellwoar, a member of the Class of 1951,
Joan McDermott Bellwoar ’51 wearing her Gwynedd scarf, given to all alumnae who graduated 50 years ago or more at their Reunion
has a history of making big things happen for Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School and our students. Most recently, Bellwoar made the largest gift by an individual in the School’s history. A member of Gwynedd’s Catherine McAuley Legacy Society, Bellwoar’s recent estate gift of $375,000 will ensure student access through an endowed scholarship and advance academic innovation through campus facility enhancements at Gwynedd. “What an extraordinary legacy Joan has left in support of Gwynedd’s mission, our 160-year tradition of Mercy education, and our strategic vision She is the Future,” remarked Gwynedd’s President Denise Corkery Marbach ’72. “Her gift is truly inspiring and will have an immediate and lasting impact on her alma mater and generations of students to come.” Bellwoar received a full academic scholarship to attend the Academy of the Sisters of Mercy, today known as Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School. As a Mercy Girl, she served as editor of The Magnet—the School newspaper, and as a member of the student council, field hockey team, glee club, and yearbook staff. She later received a scholarship to attend Chestnut Hill College and purse her love of English. The youngest of six children, Bellwoar was the first in her family to attend college. “Joan wanted more than anything for young girls, like herself, to be given the chance to have a Mercy education,” shared Kathleen Kirk Bellwoar ’81, Chair of Gwynedd’s Board of Trustees and Bellwoar’s daughter-in-law, on Mercy Day 2020 when Gwynedd announced the historic gift. “It was Joan’s way of expressing gratitude to God for the mercy she had received.” Bellwoar began her professional career at Gwynedd teaching English and Religion. She later joined the faculty of Merion Mercy Academy and Archbishop Prendergast High School where she primarily taught English and oversaw the schools’ newspapers to mentor aspiring young writers. Today, Gwynedd’s Graduation Award in English is named in Bellwoar’s honor. “The teacher in Joan would be thrilled to know the dollars she earned will also be going toward building new learning space to enhance our girls’ education,” said Kirk Bellwoar. Bellwoar was the beloved wife of 62 years of the late Harry J.J. Bellwoar and the devoted mother and teacher of seven children — Jay, Anne, Peter, Vincent, Andrew, Jeanne, and John; 19 wonderful grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Bellwoar also was known as one who truly “walked the talk” when it came to serving others; an example being how she directed in her will to give 100% of her portion of her and her husband’s estate to charity—just one more way this Mercy Girl continues to pay it forward in service to others.

A Story for the Memory Books
Gwynedd’s connection to Ed Sullivan began when Bellwoar and a few of her classmates traveled to a conference where Sullivan was a keynote speaker. By the end, he had agreed to come to Gwynedd to speak at an assembly.
The Bellwoar Family
In 1950, Joan McDermott Bellwoar’s love of writing and journalism led her to become editor of Gwynedd’s school newspaper, The Magnet. Her leadership in this role led Gwynedd to experience an even greater year for the memory books involving one of the most famous television personalities of the time—Ed Sullivan.
Sullivan is principally remembered as the creator and host of the television variety program “The Ed Sullivan Show,” which aired for 23 years from 1948 to 1971 and set a record as the longestrunning variety show in U.S. broadcast history. Gwynedd’s connection to Sullivan began in October 1950, when Bellwoar and a few of her classmates traveled to the Allentown Press Conference where Sullivan was a keynote speaker. Bellwoar and her classmates engaged Sullivan in a 30-minute conversation; and by the end, he had agreed to come to Gwynedd to speak at an assembly. Sullivan visited the school in February and was so impressed with the students that he invited the entire Senior Class to New York City to see his show live on Easter weekend. So off they went via school bus to Times Square. Each girl wore her fanciest dress and pumps and stayed overnight at a beautiful hotel. After the show, Sullivan and his wife hosted the class at the swanky Stork Club for dinner and dancing. He even arranged for each senior to have an escort from the University of Notre Dame Men’s Choir which had performed on the show that evening. What a night!

CLASS OF 2020
Celebrates Commencement
On July 18, the young women of Gwynedd Mercy Academy’s Class of 2020 celebrated their Commencement exercises together in traditional white dresses and carrying a dozen red roses during an outdoor, socially distant ceremony with their parents on Gwynedd’s campus. Graduate Aileen Murray delivered the Invocation, expressing gratitude for the lifelong gift of a “family of sisters” and seeking God’s blessings on the graduates as they move forward as “independent women of mercy.” Salutatorian Jillian Dougherty confidently shared her belief that “the Mercy Spirit will follow the Class of 2020 to college and beyond, inspiring us to share in the service of others.” The Class then sang their selected Graduates’ Song, “I’ll Always Remember You” by Hannah Montana. When it was time to walk across the stage—albeit in a fashionable Gwynedd mask this year, each graduate curtsied as her name was called by Dean of Academics Anne Casavecchia before receiving her gold medal and diploma from President Denise Corkery Marbach ’72 and Principal Mary E. Kirby. Once all were presented, each graduate’s parents/guardians were then given the honor of placing the graduation medal on their daughter. Special medals also were bestowed upon graduates for honor, school spirit, leadership, Christian womanhood, and academics. Board of Trustees Chair Kathleen Kirk Bellwoar ’81 concluded the awarding of medals by congratulating the graduates and introducing the 2020 Commencement Speaker, Ann Diehl Casey ’50. A three-term member of the Board of Trustees, Ann offered, “A Commencement address is usually designed to convey words of inspiration to the graduates. But this year, the words of inspiration come from you. We stand in awe of your spirit, courage, flexibility, determination, and good humor in the face of adversity.” “You have learned a life lesson at an early age, but you are Gwynedd Strong—you are Mercy Strong—not even the challenges of a global pandemic can defeat you. Malala, herself a 2020 Graduate wrote: We will not be defined by what we have lost, but how we responded.” President Marbach thanked Ann for her “true love of our Mercy legacy” and Kathy and the Board of Trustees for their extraordinary commitment to ensure the success of Gwynedd. She also praised the many accomplishments of the Class of 2020 and expressed her sincere thanks to their parents and guardians for giving Gwynedd the opportunity and honor to educate, inspire, and empower their daughters. Principal Mary Kirby recognized 42 members of the graduating class as members of the National Honor Society and highlighted National Merit Commended Students Aileen Murray, Kathryn Tereshko, and Kiera Thomas. She also announced that 97% of the Class of 2020 received scholarships totaling nearly $20 million to colleges and universities throughout the country. Valedictorian Julia Smith remarked, “If I have learned anything from my time at Gwynedd Mercy, it is that only I can control how I view the world and who I want to be, and I choose to be a Gwynedd Girl.” Then the graduates, faculty, staff, and alumnae present sang the Alma Mater, just before Grace Hirschmann, accompanied by her mother, placed a crown of red roses on the Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Mercy.

SPRING COMMENCEMENT ACTIVITIES
A SHINING LAMP Catherine McAuley said, “We should be shining lamps, giving light to all around us.”
Alumna Ann Diehl Casey, Gwynedd Mercy’s 2020 Commencement Speaker,
is the embodiment of this quote having given light, service, counsel, and wisdom to her alma mater since her graduation in 1950.
In June 2020, Ann completed her third term of service on Gwynedd’s Board of Trustees. During her tenure, she co-chaired the School’s first Presidential Search Committee and chaired the Board’s Advancement Committee and Mission and Governance Committee. Previously, Ann served as president of the Alumnae Association and as alumnae chair of the School’s 150th Anniversary Committee. She also is a past recipient of Gwynedd’s Margaret Beirn Barger ’35 Distinguished Alumna Award and a 2013 Trocaire Leadership Award.

Diane Caffrey Keen ’85 and her daughter Audrey ’20 enjoying the Senior Mother-Daughter Celebration and Alumnae Association Induction
A graduate of Gwynedd Mercy College, Ann’s interest in business and education led her to serve as the director of the conference centers at both Temple University and The American College. She served on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Conference Centers and was a member of the IACC team that lectured at Cornell University. For several years, she also operated a consulting firm that offered advisory services and program design to academic and commercial conference centers. Ann also has been an active volunteer for the “For Pete’s Sake” Cancer Respite Foundation, serving as a member of the Women’s Committee chaired by Alice Anne Goldkamp Bossow ’60. Ann’s legacy of Mercy extends to two of her granddaughters, Ann Green ’11 and Flynn Casey ’20, and daughter-in-law Keri Conway Casey ’86. 7

Elissa Gore ’68
Trocaire Leadership Award Recipient, Arts
Elissa Gore ’68 received her bachelor’s in fine arts from the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied painting and sculpting, and her master’s in medical Illustration from the University of Texas Southwestern. She also has taught at Parsons School of Design, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Pace University, and the New York Botanical Garden. Currently, she devotes all her time to landscape painting. She paints places she loves from observation and memory, and her attempt to find a sense of the universal in the natural landscape has become commercially successful. For the past 25 years, she has been a full-time professional studio artist with many solo and group exhibitions; her paintings hang in many private homes and more than 70 public collections. She is represented by Markel Fine Arts in New York City and Orbit Gallery in Philadelphia. Gore also co-founded Paint Inwood that annually hosts painters near her home, and she occasionally teaches community workshops in sketching nature and watercolor painting outdoors. continued on page 10 8 EDUCATE. Maura McLaughlin, Ph.D. ’90 is an exciting example of Gwynedd girls making their mark on the world. In her career as an astrophysicist, she works to shed further light on the Universe and the physical laws governing it, including Einstein’s theory of relativity. She also empowers students, especially young women, to pursue careers in science and to make groundbreaking discoveries of their own. McLaughlin is the Eberly Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy and the Director of the Center for Gravitational Waves and Cosmology at West Virginia University (WVU). Her work mainly involves researching neutron stars—compact remnants of massive stars born in supernova explosions—using the world’s largest radio telescopes. A significant research aim of hers is the use of neutron stars to detect gravitational waves. To this end, McLaughlin also serves as the co-director of the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) Physics Frontiers Center (PFC)—one of only ten PFCs funded by the National Science Foundation. The NANOGrav team, which includes scientists from more than 50 U.S. and Canadian institutions, helped discover the largest neutron star to date in 2019; and following a recent observation in its latest data set, McLaughlin expects they will soon detect gravitational waves created by supermassive black holes at the cores of merging galaxies by timing an array of pulsars. “Currently, we can observe stars that are in orbit around each other and see that their orbits are shrinking and getting closer together in time,” says McLaughlin. “That’s exactly in line with what Einstein predicted.
ALUMNA PROFILE
McLaughlin, Ph.D. ’90
Trocaire Leadership Award Recipient, Healthcare/Science/Technology The next step is detecting the gravitational waves directly.” In 1915, Einstein published the theory of general relativity, the most elegant and complete description of gravity, space, and time ever constructed. One of Einstein’s most fundamental predictions is the existence of invisible ripples in space-time called gravitational waves. Now, over 100 years later, McLaughlin and her colleagues are on the brink of detecting these waves. “Direct detection of gravitational waves is one of the most transformational prospects of modern physics with the potential to revolutionize our knowledge of the universe,” says McLaughlin. McLaughlin became hooked on science as a young girl while reading science fiction, the works of Isaac Asimov, and the writings of the astronomer Carl Sagan and the physicist Stephen Hawking. She credits the empowering all-girls environment of Gwynedd for helping her pursue her passion. Says Maura, “It honestly didn’t occur to me that I would be a minority in my field, and I also wasn’t concerned about what people would think if I did something not many girls did.” McLaughlin went on to Penn State University to earn her Bachelor of Science degree. At Cornell University, she earned her Ph.D. in physics, working on pulsars, and then moved on to the University of Manchester in England as a National Science Foundation math and physical sciences distinguished research fellow and as a postdoctoral research associate. She joined WVU in 2006. In addition to her research activities, McLaughlin developed a noted outreach endeavor with her husband, Eberly College Associate Dean for Research Duncan Lorimer, called the Pulsar Search Collaboratory (PSC) to interest high school students, especially underrepresented youth and girls, in the search
for pulsars with the Green Bank Telescope in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. To date, 2,000 students across 18 states have been involved in the program. They have analyzed more than 2,000,000 pieces of data, discovered eight new pulsars, have been authors on scientific publications, and were congratulated in person by President Obama. McLaughlin, herself, continues to be honored for her leadership and research. She is the recipient of the Research Corporation’s Cottrell Scholar Award, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, and the Penn State Schreyer Honors College Outstanding Alumni Mentor Award. She also was named to the scientific journal Nature’s “Ones to Watch” list for 2019, and most recently was named a 2020 Highly Cited Researcher by Web of Science, one of the world’s top research awards.
Maura McLaughlin, Ph.D. ’90 has had her head in the stars ever since she was a student at Gwynedd Mercy. Now she is a worldclass astrophysicist working to gain a new window on the universe.
Green Bank Telescope, West Virginia, is the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope.

Eileen Maguire Maginnis ’75
Trocaire Leadership Award Recipient, Business/Entrepreneur/Engineer
Eileen Maguire Maginnis ’75 earned her bachelor’s in civil engineering in 1979 and her master’s in project planning engineering in 1981 from Villanova University. She was one of only seven female civil engineering students to graduate and did so with honors. In 1981, Maginnis joined Métier Management Systems to provide consulting services and develop customized project management software for Fortune 500 customers ranging from NASA and the U.S. Navy to major pharmaceutical and construction firms. She also established Métier’s Philadelphia sales office in 1985 and managed the office for the next 10 years. In 1995, Maginnis’ entrepreneurial spirit led her to start her own project management consulting firm; and later, in 2007, found ABC Fulfillment, one of the few female owned fulfillment centers in the country, to streamline the shipping and order fulfillment process for e-commerce customers. ABC grew to over $4 million in sales and employed more than 30 full and part-time employees. When the business was sold in 2016, Maginnis established Dog House Pearls, an online pearl jewelry store featured on major shopping channels and other media outlets. Maginnis also is known for her longtime service to the community, especially as a trustee of LaSalle Academy that serves disadvantaged students in North Philadelphia. Lori Fanelli Butrus ’79
Trocaire Leadership Award Recipient, Religion/Vocation/Volunteer
After completing her teaching certification in 1989, Lori Fanelli Butrus ’79 began her second career teaching math at Egg Harbor Township High School and soon noticed that some of her students, especially those with special needs, were having difficulty with the curriculum. So, in 1990, she designed a floriculture class pulling from her experience working with plants and flowers on her family’s farm, Lynwood Gardens. This led to the establishment of The Eagle Greenery Floriculture Program—a “real life” working flower shop and “practical life skills” training ground for special education students. Her students now leave the school with solid skills for “green collar jobs” and beyond; efforts for which she has been recognized at the national level. Butrus and her husband also are the main volunteers behind Linwood Arboretum, a natural sanctuary they helped to build which serves as an ecological reserve and educational resource for the community and area schools. Nancy Pannepacker McKeaney ’64
Margaret Beirn Barger ’35 Distinguished Alumna Award Recipient
A graduate of Gwynedd Mercy College, Nancy Pannepacker McKeaney ’64 began her nursing career at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Later, in 1989, she joined the staff of Gwynedd as the school nurse and served in this position for 15 years. McKeaney and her husband Frank raised three children, including Karen ’88 and Christine ’91; she believes Gwynedd gave her the foundation to raise her daughters as strong, compassionate women who lead by example. That example, one of faith, hope, and fortitude, was never more present than when she and her husband tragically lost their son in 1987.
McKeaney channeled her grief into helping other parents who experienced similar loss, calling on her faith to guide her and sharing her strength with those in need. An active alumna, McKeaney served as a member of the Mothers’ Club, chaired the Circle of Mercy luncheon during her 50th reunion year, and remains a class agent to keep her class connected to GMA and to one another.

STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE
Our Vision
WE WILL EDUCATE, INSPIRE, AND EMPOWER GENERATIONS OF WOMEN LEADERS.
Our Story THE STRENGTH OF MERCY It all began with Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, who turned her experience of poverty and the subjugation of women in Ireland in the 1800s into decades of academic opportunities for girls. With her “no such thing as no” and “can do” attitude, she overcame incredible obstacles. In 1861, the Academy of the Sisters of Mercy, now Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School, opened its own doors to help young women in the Philadelphia area unlock their potential. What an inspiring legacy she has given us.
Our Journey THE POWER OF COMMUNITY For nearly 160 years, Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School has upheld its strong tradition of academic excellence and empowerment in the education of young women rooted in Mercy values. When we embarked on our strategic planning journey in 2018, we knew that inclusivity would be key to planning for the road ahead. At each turn, we connected with the people who make Gwynedd such a special place—our students, alumnae, faculty, staff, and parents. This strategic plan, more than any other in our history, grows from our shared values. Launched in 2019, SHE IS THE FUTURE is focused on empowering generations of women leaders and will chart the course for our future. It is shaping the way our educators teach, the way our students learn, and the way our community lives the Mercy Mission. 12 STRATEGIC PLAN
Thirty-one work projects have been designed to fulfill our SHE IS THE FUTURE vision in the areas of education, leadership, wellness, connection, and vitality. Our work is well underway.
EDUCATION To help her realize her purpose,
we will cross traditional barriers to deliver an authentic and innovative educational experience rooted in Mercy values. We will Educate through a dynamic and interdisciplinary curriculum that cultivates scholarship, leadership, and global awareness. Inspire Inspire self-discovery and purpose through enhanced comprehensive counseling services and customized college guidance. Empower students through the development and support of outstanding faculty.

Highlights:
The global pandemic led Gwynedd to immediately create an effective Virtual Learning Plan, enabling students to successfully complete the 2019-20 academic year. We also constructed a safe Hybrid Learning Plan for 2020-21 with scenarios for on campus, blended, and virtual learning; moved from a quarter to a semester system; and instituted new grading and assessment practices. With career opportunities abounding for women in STEM, an advisory council enrolled in new courses such as Introduction to Engineering and Robotics, course innovation such as building and managing a real stock portfolio in Gwynedd’s Business and Entrepreneurship class. Educational partnerships in biotechnology and Drexel University in entrepreneurship. Just before the pandemic, faculty and staff created and hosted Gwynedd’s first Mercy-mester — a week-long term between semesters allowing students in Grades 9-11 to explore areas of interest beyond the classroom. The week included inspirational talks, book discussions, service experiences, museum trips, and mini courses like Adulting 101, Digital Citizenship, Global Cuisine, Woodshop, and more. The term also enabled the entire Senior Class to experience an enriched three-day retreat called Emmaus to deepen their relationship with God and one another. Gwynedd’s Mission Week, focused on the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concern of Immigration, featured a keynote address by the founder of Villanova University’s Clinic for Asylum, Refugee, and Emigrant Services (CARES) and one of her clients, a Syrian refuge. Students also experienced a refugee simulation designed by Jesuit Refugee Services to look into the hardships refugees endure in accessing bare necessities. Gwynedd’s Counseling Department reorganized to enhance its services to students and their parents. Two full-time college counselors now provide individualized support beginning freshman year and through the college search, application, and acceptance process; and two additional full-time counselors focus their services on academic and emotional support and wellness. A comprehensive four-year counseling plan is now in place to foster each student’s personal growth and success, including a personalized assessment at the end of each academic year to guide strategies related to academic success, mental health, and future goal setting. A new Freshman Advisory class also has been designed to promote wellness and equip students with the tools to manage stress and anxiety often experienced in adolescent high school years. To attract and retain the highest quality faculty and staff, Gwynedd implemented a new compensation and evaluation plan and is offering increased opportunities for professional advancement.

LEADERSHIP To inspire her as a leader, we
will provide substantive, relevant opportunities that prepare young women for the call of leadership. We will Educate students through a world-class leadership program inspired by the life and legacy of Catherine McAuley. Inspire young women to see themselves as instrumental agents of change by addressing the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy. Empower generations of future leaders through high-impact, experiential opportunities that extend classroom learning to real-world applications and leverage our Gwynedd and Mercy networks.
Highlights:
Gwynedd mobilized quickly to launch a robust leadership program. We hired an alumna to serve as the program coordinator and established two advisory councils, one involving alumnae and the other involving students, to guide its efforts. Now called L.E.A.D. (Learn. Educate. Achieve. Develop.), the program’s mission is to educate and empower young women to become ethical, courageous leaders of action and conviction. One aspect of L.E.A.D. allows students to become leadership certified through the national Lead4Change Student Leadership Program. The 12-lesson curriculum is designed to integrate leadership training, collaboration, and community service into the classroom to effect change. In Gwynedd’s first year participating, four students won program grants to implement their community service projects and qualified for the national competition in 2020, making them the only all-girls school winner. Gwynedd has forged bonds with other national and international organizations devoted to promoting gender equality, diversity, and inclusion—namely, the Mercy Education System of the Americas, the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools, IGNITE National, and Girl Up. These affiliations lend vital educational resources and assist in the development of leadership opportunities for our students. Created in 2019, Gwynedd’s internship program enables students to gain real-world experience in a dozen professions including technology, engineering, marketing and communications, business, and the culinary arts without leaving campus. Likewise, a summer externship program, launched in 2020, is helping students gain an understanding of careers they may be considering. Despite the pandemic, externship participants were able to watch a brain surgery being performed at Lenox Hill Hospital, sit in on Senate hearings in Harrisburg, and shadow an orthodontist while wearing full-body personal protective equipment. L.E.A.D. also partnered with Gwynedd’s Alumnae Association to launch Gwynedd Force—the School’s online platform for career exploration, professional growth, and mentoring. L.E.A.D. co-hosts an established Summer Leadership Summit for girls in Grades 7-8 with Gwynedd’s Admissions Office, and initiated an annual Summer Leadership Training Conference for Student Leaders and Seniors — both of which engage alumnae guest speakers and leadership experts. Each month, L.E.A.D. also recognizes a current student with an Ethical Leadership Award.

14 STRATEGIC PLAN
Recently, Gwynedd was awarded a challenge grant from the prestigious Edward E. Ford Foundation to cultivate a culture of “leaders for life.” The funds will support the training of faculty innovators to incorporate leadership development into our curriculum and the expansion of our student leadership training conference and community speaker series. L.E.A.D. also received a grant from BLBB Charitable to help our students discover their true and full potential through educational and leadership opportunities.
WELLNESS To honor her well-being, we will
embrace a culture that holistically nurtures the mind, body, and spirit of every student. We will Educate and engage our community in practices that support individuals in achieving and sustaining health and well-being. Inspire a culture of achievement and caring that balances individual passions and pursuits with a commitment to the larger community. Empower the community by embedding prayer, mindfulness, and reflection into the daily life of the school.
Members of the Class of 2023 celebrating Mercy Day Highlights:
Gwynedd hosted a wellness speaker series for the community on important topics like “Building Resilience in Teens,” presented by Dr. Ken Ginsburg, a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Co-Founder of the Center for Parent and Teen Communication, and “Empowering Smart Choices in Digital World,” presented by Amie Konwinski, founder and CEO of Smart GEN Society. Thanks to a grant from the Ambassador’s Fund for Catholic Education, students, faculty, and staff enjoyed a school-wide read, “The Other Side of Beauty,” and a visit by the author Leigh Darrow. Darrow, a former model on reality TV, encourages women to embrace the mercy of Christ in their lives and to find their purpose in “doing something beautiful for God.” We launched Monarch Mornings—an enrichment program periodically held at the start of the school day for students to address a range of wellness topics like Catholic mindfulness, body image, managing social media, vaping risks, stress management techniques, self-defense, dance, and movement therapy and more. Tech-Free Fridays also were introduced to elevate human connection over digital engagement, along with periodic campus visits from certified therapy dogs. And at the end of each week, students are now guided in reflection—The Examen, a prayer of awareness that Ignatius of Loyola taught in his Spiritual Exercises to help us notice God’s presence in our daily lives.

CONNECTION To open doors for her,
we will unite our community, expand our diversity, and grow connections locally and globally. We will Educate all about the depth and breadth of the Gwynedd experience and its transformative impact on the lives of graduates and others. Inspire and expand spiritual development, opportunities to serve, and a commitment to the greater good among all members of the Gwynedd community. Empower an enduring connection through a global network of support and a lifelong sisterhood of alumnae.
Highlights:
Gwynedd introduced a refreshed mission statement and new look—an evolution of our prior logo, crest, and shield—to strengthen our identity as a Mercy school. We continued to expand our connections globally through the Mercy Education System of the Americas with faculty and staff engaging in regular “cohort dialogues” involving member schools. The School’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Committee created a strategic plan, titled “As Catherine Did,” with more than 80 action items to expand and support diversity at Gwynedd. Generous donor support led us to announce the search for our first Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Leader. We bolstered our relationship with The Office of Black Catholics of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia by introducing a scholarship program for students of color interested in attending Gwynedd. The School also welcomed Elizabeth Johnson Rice, a civil rights activist and member of the Richmond 34 who worked alongside Martin Luther King, Jr., to campus to inspire students, faculty, and staff as part of Black History Month. A grant from the Ambassador’s Fund for Catholic Education enabled Gwynedd to expand its retreat program to include student-parent retreats. Faith formation opportunities during Advent and Lent were expanded to include the broader Gwynedd Community, the Pandemic: What is Being Asked of Us as Christians.” A casserole program, run in collaboration by Ministry and Service and Gwynedd’s food service provider Brock, also was added to our The Alumnae Association Board demonstrated its ongoing commitment to promoting lifelong sisterhood by refreshing its mission statement, goals, and committee structure to better align with Gwynedd’s mission and strategic plan. We launched Gwynedd Force, the School’s online platform for career exploration, professional growth, and mentoring to connect and advance our community of professionals rooted in Mercy values. We also introduced a virtual alumnae speaker series to address mission-related and trending topics and provided opportunities for alumnae to lead our student body in prayer during virtual learning.

VITALITY To give her a school that will evolve and endure, we will
develop an “all-in” culture of support and grow the financial sustainability of Gwynedd. We will Educate and seek out missionaligned families whose daughters have the talent and drive to succeed and embrace the Catholic values of the school. Inspire stewardship for the longterm vision and vitality of Gwynedd through an innovative advancement program. Empower ambassadors who generate support for the future of Gwynedd girls through this strategic plan.
Highlights:
Gwynedd enrolled its largest freshman class in fifteen years, the Class of 2024, with 107 students, and instituted a Parent Ambassador Program to welcome and support incoming families. We are providing more financial aid than ever before in our history, raising funds that helped to enable 31% of the student body to receive a total of $970,000 in tuition assistance for the 2020-21 academic year. This 148% increase over four years is due in large part to increased alumnae and parent participation in the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) Programs. Gwynedd also received its largest gift from an individual in the School’s history, $375,000, to fund an endowed scholarship and facility enhancements to advance She is the Future educational initiatives. We also continue to raise the bar on the Mercy Fund, our annual fund that supports every student and program at Gwynedd, raising $375,000 last year—a 65% increase over four years. We are proud to report 100% giving participation by our Board of Trustees and faculty and staff, and increased participation by alumnae and parents. Gwynedd also formed a new President’s Leadership Council to recognize and engage alumnae, parents, and friends who are highly invested in advancing the mission and strategic priorities of the School and in strengthening its ties to the greater Gwynedd and external communities.
GMA Student Ambassadors congratulate Olivia Carlo ’24 on her acceptance to Gwynedd.

HAPPENING at GMA
and social media is the place to discover it! Here are just a few highlights ...
SPEECH AND DEBATE
Kathryn Tereshko ’20 Sahiba Tandon ’21

The Gwynedd Mercy Speech and Debate Team, coached by Cory Clark Shay ’95, is well known for its achievements. Of recent special note, Sahiba Tandon ’21 and Kathryn Tereshko ’20 made Gwynedd history by both making it into the final round of the 2020 National Speech and Debate Tournament—the largest academic competition in the world—in the category of Expository speaking. Each was charged with writing and delivering an informative, five-minute speech to describe, clarify, illustrate, or define an object, idea, concept, or process. In the end, our Monarchs were victorious, with Sahiba named the National Champion and Kathryn the runner-up.

MERCY EFFECT Last May, Pope Francis recognized our Mercy girls’ participation with Mercy schools across the country for raising awareness and funds for the Laudato Tree Project, also known as the Great Green Wall. The goal of this youth-powered movement is to plant and protect seven million trees across the Sahel region of Africa to combat desertification and ward off drought, famine, conflict, and migration. GMA’s successful fundraising efforts—organized by the service club Mercy Effect—included the creation of the Bibbidi Bobbidi and Super Hero Breakfasts for young children at GMA. These events raised over $7,000 to sponsor the planting of 700 Laudato Trees.
