Letter from the President

Dear Friends, Thanks to our foundational strength and determination to protect our community and carry on our academic mission at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School, we have done far more than adapt and emerge from a global pandemic. We have become stronger. In this President’s Report, you are invited to revisit our history beginning with Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, whose bold vision led to our school’s founding more than 160 years ago, our current strategic plan “She is the Future,” and our shared values with the Sisters of Mercy. Be inspired by the stellar achievements of our Class of 2021 and Commencement Speaker Corinne O’Connell ’91, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia, and the many milestones accomplished by our faculty, students, and alumnae. Finally, join me in recognizing the extraordinary contributions of our donors and volunteers whose gifts of time, talent, and treasure ensured one of our most successful fundraising years ever, with record giving to the Mercy Fund as well as financial aid through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Programs. We are grateful. We also remain ever focused on the opportunities ahead and even more mindful that “She is the Future.” In Mercy,

Denise Corkery Marbach ’72, P’05, ’09 President

Honoring

THE CLASS OF 2021

with Commencement On June 5, 2021, the 94 women of the Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School Class of 2021 processed in traditional white gowns and gloves and carried bouquets of red roses to celebrate Commencement, held on the front lawn of the school. Their families joined in socially distant groups to honor the graduates. Sydney Pasceri ’21 delivered the invocation, thanking classmates,

family, teachers, and administrators for their dedication to the class over the last four years. Salutatorian Kelly Murray ’21 shared the advice of Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, to “resolve to do good today and better tomorrow” and offered that all the graduates now have the “confidence to do what we think best.” Each member of the class then joined President Denise Corkery Marbach ’72 and Principal Mary Kirby on stage to receive her graduation medal and diploma. Additional medals were awarded to graduates in recognition of outstanding school spirit, honor, service, leadership, and academic performance. President Marbach next introduced the 2021 Commencement Speaker Corinne O’Connell ’93, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia. Corinne congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to always believe in the power of possibility and to harness their own audacious visions, grounded in Mercy, to tip the scales in favor of the greater good. “Possibility is in the air at Gwynedd,” Corinne said. “It’s been harnessed by faculty who challenged you to be innovative in thought, sparked by coaches and advisors who empowered you to believe in your own possibility, and witnessed in the beauty you created on canvases, woven into skilled rhetoric debates, and heard in your harmonized voices…your diploma is your call to action and a reminder of what is possible. Put it somewhere visible to challenge yourself every day to what is possible.” Trustee Kathleen Haley Hunsicker, Esq. ’81, Ellie Keaton, and Trustee Kathleen Roeder, M.D. ’60

Board of Trustees Chair Kathy Kirk Bellwoar ’81 also congratulated the graduates on behalf of the Board and offered, “you have proven you are courageous and resilient… never forget that you are the future.” Principal Kirby acknowledged Julia Masterson and Megan Panacek who were commended by the National Merit Scholars Program and Eva Carmona-Rogina who was named a National Hispanic Scholar by the College Board and invited the 43 members of the National Honor Society to stand and be recognized. Valedictorian Megan Panacek, whose remarks were inspired by the beloved film “Toy Story,” shared how one of the toy Woody’s defining characteristics is the name ’Andy’ written on the sole of his boot; so no matter where Woody goes, Andy is always imprinted on him. “I believe that no matter where we all go, this sisterhood will forever be imprinted on our hearts,” said Megan.

The Crowning of the Blessed Mother followed, led by Madeline Tronoski ’21 and her mother Meg Tronoski and accompanied by Sister Susan Myslinkski, R.S.M. who sang “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman.” Finally, all the graduates were invited to stand together to sing the Alma Mater before the Class of 2021 processed out as alumnae.

LIVING MERCY DAILY As CEO for Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia, our 2021 Commencement Speaker Corinne O’Connell ’93 works every day toward an audacious vision— a world, a country, a city where everyone has a decent place to live. Today, far too many Philadelphians lack access to decent, affordable housing. In fact, over 121,000 Philadelphians live in conditions deemed inadequate. Corinne works daily to change this narrative. Since being named CEO in 2017, Corinne has been instrumental in the sale of more than 230 affordable homes and the renovation of more than 600 other homes through a host of partnerships. She believes it is entirely possible to infuse our city with enough affordable housing to “tip the scales and create a new ecosystem of stability, self-reliance, and opportunity.” Corinne earned her BA from Saint Joseph’s University and her MA in Nonprofit Leadership from Seattle University. She worked at the YWCA of Seattle and Project HOME in Philadelphia before joining Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia as director of development in 2009, as well as served as the organization’s associate executive director from 2011 to 2017. She also has served on the boards of Gearing Up and the Ignatian Solidarity Network. Corinne’s efforts and leadership in the nonprofit sector have earned her notable accolades. She received Gwynedd’s Trocaire Leadership Award in 2012, was named a recipient of a Valentine Foundation Visionary Leadership grant in 2017, and more recently was honored by the Philadelphia Business Journal honor as one of the 25 Most Admired CEOs.

celebrating our History Gwynedd Mercy invites you to campus to enjoy two new works of art celebrating our history and legacy of Mercy The Heritage Wall depicts a timeline of Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School’s history and can be found just outside our Maria Lutz McHugh ’46 Gymnasium. Our story begins with Catherine McAuley educating and sheltering poor and homeless women and children in the 1820s to her founding of the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland, in 1831. Shortly thereafter, in 1843, the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Pittsburgh to lay the foundation of Mercy education and service in the Americas. In 1861, ten Sisters traveled to Philadelphia to open The Academy of the Sisters of Mercy, today known as Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School. The Academy first opened its doors in Assumption Parish where the Sisters taught children during the day and

6 CELEBRATING OUR HISTORY

educated working women at night. In 1863, the school moved to a private residence at Broad Street and Columbia Avenue before relocating again in 1948. “Mother Mary Bernard Graham, the head of the Order [and a member of the Class of 1916 and the Academy’s former principal], came to school to announce we would be moving to Gwynedd Valley,” shared Ann Diehl Casey ’50, Trustee Emerita, at the Heritage Wall dedication. In 1947, the Sisters of Mercy purchased an 84.5-acre rural estate for $100,000 with a dream of establishing a college, and immediately converted the estate’s stables

into classrooms and erected a science building to serve both the Academy and College, today known as Gwynedd Mercy University. In 1955, the current high school building opened to house the Academy’s elementary and secondary schools; and in 1963, the school was eventually renamed Gwynedd Mercy Academy. In 1982, the Spring House public school was purchased to house the elementary school, and our current building began to exclusively serve young women in grades 9-12. The Heritage Wall also details recent additions at the Academy, including our 550-seat Performing Arts Center, a chapel, the Learning Commons, an art studio, a music amphitheater with practice rooms, a lecture hall, and a turf field.

“Perhaps the strength of our school is that we have always had the ability and vision to change with the times while still holding to unchanging principles,” shared Ann Casey. “Although we added Gwynedd to our name, we cling fiercely to our Mercy identity.”

Following a brief period at St. Malachy’s Parish, the Academy relocated on 1863 to Broad Street and Columbia Avenue with 28 students. The Academy of the Sisters of Mercy originally opened for the instruction of young women in “all the English branches, French, Spanish, Italian, music, needle-work, and all the usual requisites and polite accomplishments of female education,” and flourished over the years. Pictured below is the Sisters of Mercy Orchestra from the 1890s.

In 2017, the Mercy Educational System of the Americas was established to connect Mercy schools throughout the United States and in Argentina, Belize, Guam, Honduras, Jamaica, and the Philippines. The timeline ends in 2020 with the launch of our bold strategic plan, “She is the Future” to educate, inspire, and empower generations of women leaders.

celebrating our History

Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy and the inspiration for our strategic plan, “She is the Future,” is now the first to welcome you to Gwynedd Mercy’s campus. Her life-size bronze statue stands just outside our main entrance and chapel. The statue was sculpted by Sister Marie Henderson, R.S.M., a faculty member at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture who has created Mercy-inspired works of art that live all over the world. A week before Commencement, Sr. Marie loaded the 5-foot, 6-inch, 300-pound bronze statue into her minivan and drove to Gwynedd to oversee the installation process. A gift from John Igoe, the statue is dedicated to his sisters Margaret Igoe Knightly ’54 and Mary Igoe Eberle ’55. Members of the Class of 1960 made the installation possible with their generous gifts. Catherine was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1778 to loving parents. Orphaned at an early age, she was adopted by wealthy stepparents and became the recipient of a million dollar inheritance. A courageous visionary with a “can do” attitude, she used the monies to open the first House of Mercy on Baggot Street in 1827 to care for orphans, educate poor children, and protect and empower young women. In 1831, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy to continue her work. Handwritten by Catherine into the first chapter of the Sisters of Mercy original Rule and Constitution are the words, “No work of charity can be more productive of the good to society…than the careful instruction of women, since…their example and advice will always possess influence.” By 1841, the year of her passing, Catherine had established eleven foundations across Ireland and England and inspired a movement of Mercy, now worldwide.

September 11, 2021, members of the Igoe family and the Class of 1960 gathered with Gwynedd faculty and staff to dedicate our statue of Catherine McAuley to Margaret Igoe Knightly ’54 and Mary Igoe Eberle ’55 (seated). Joining Mary (standing from left to right) are President Denise Marbach ’72, Faculty Member Sr. Maureen Christi, R.S.M., John Igoe, Faculty Member Sr. Susan Myslinski, R.S.M., and Director of Mission Integration Sr. Bernadette Duross, R.S.M.

8 CELEBRATING OUR HISTORY

THE CRITICAL CONCERNS of the Sisters of Mercy

Ignited by the Gospel and the life of Catherine McAuley, the Sisters of Mercy are committed to action and dedicated to serving the poor and addressing the root causes of systemic injustices. “When you think about why Catherine opened the first House of Mercy in 1824…responding to the needs of the time was the major imperative…She had eyes open, ears open, and a heart open.” says Sister Suzanne Gallagher, R.S.M., Justice Coordinator of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Today, the Sisters of Mercy focus their social justice efforts on five Critical Concerns of our time: Earth, Immigration, Non-Violence, Racism, and Women. Their commitment to addressing these issues is demonstrated through personal transformation, community choices, educational outreach, legislative advocacy, corporate engagement, and spiritual practices.

We work toward the sustainability of all life by caring for Earth’s ecosystems, addressing global climate change, and advocating for the fundamental right to clean water.

At Gwynedd Mercy, we choose one concern for collective study and action each year and integrate the concern into the curriculum, specialized community programs, and service opportunities to make an impact. For instance, “Teaching American History through the lens of the Critical Concerns allows for a more nuanced understanding of the past and recognizes the vital contributions of women in the story of the American people,” says Faculty Member Karalyn McGrorty Derstine, Ed.D. ’01.

We act in solidarity with immigrants, refugees, and victims of human trafficking, seeking with them a more just and inclusive world.

We work to improve our personal practice of nonviolence and peacemaking, to collaborate with organizations that foster peace, and to change violent systems and structures.

9

Our Focus on the

CRITICAL CONCERN OF RACISM We work to become an anti-racist multicultural community because we believe racism is an evil affecting us all.

Additionally, leadership, community, and service programs designed to address an area of critical concern equip our students with the confidence, skills, and experience needed to live as leaders and agents of change in the world—the vision of our strategic plan “She is the Future.” Gwynedd Mercy’s focus on the Critical Concerns has led me to become very aware of and attentive to the ways in which our world, for one reason or another, pushes certain people out and makes them feel like ‘the other,’” says Elizabeth Hasson ’18, a senior at Villanova University who is considering a career in corporate social responsibility and volunteers for Special Olympics and Mercy Focus on Haiti. “It has empowered me to shine a light and, in my own small way, to make a change in whatever way I can.”

We give special attention to women’s education, health, and spirituality through our legislative advocacy, our schools, healthcare institutions, and spirituality centers.

2020-21

The Sisters of Mercy Critical Concern of Racism was the focus for Gwynedd Mercy during the 2020-21 academic year. This was the clear choice

with recent events bringing an urgent call to action on racial equality and with our commitment to expand and support diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice as guided by our Mercy mission and communityinformed strategic plan “She is the Future.” One significant step of the plan was to hire a staff member dedicated to ensuring Gwynedd Mercy is a place where every student, teacher, and staff member feels welcomed, seen, and heard. With the support of a generous alumna, the school welcomed Anita Roberson as our first Leader of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice.

Anita Roberson, Gwynedd Mercy’s first Leader of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice

Anita grew up in Delaware County and has spent her career working to advance the understanding of DEIJ in corporate, non-profit, and educational institutions. Just prior to coming to Gwynedd, she served as the Middle States Regional Program Manager for A Better Chance, a national non-profit which recruits academically talented students of color for independent school placement. “When I came across the position at Gwynedd, I learned about the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concerns,” shared Anita. “I was happy to see the School already had a focus on DEIJ since all the Critical Concerns have a DEIJ focus, not just Racism.”

With Anita’s leadership, Gwynedd partnered with the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) to execute the Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism (AIM) at Gwynedd. This important exercise engaged members of all constituent groups through open conversations and anonymous surveys, and their responses are now helping to inform the School’s DEIJ initiatives. Anita conducted several professional development and programmatic activities rooted in Catholic Social Teaching for the Board of Trustees, faculty & staff,

10 CRITICAL CONCERNS

and students. Board members participated in two, three-hour retreats to deepen their understanding of the history of racism in the United States and the ways in which racism is sustained individually, interpersonally, institutionally, and systemically. Faculty, staff, and students participated in activities that deepened their understanding of microaggressions and, through a collaboration with Mission Integration, engaged in Mission Week activities that explored systemic racism. “Students also were empowered to be the center of and to drive a lot our programming,” said Anita. For instance, students who attended the NAIS Student Diversity and Leadership Conference planned a Black History Month celebration that highlighted racial and ethnic disparities within the criminal justice system. In addition to discussions about current events, students hosted a movie screening of the award-winning film Just Mercy and an all-school read of New York Times bestseller, Dear Martin by Nic Stone. The DEIJ Department partnered with Ministry & Service to launch our first schoolwide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service event which focused on the intersection of race, poverty, and women. DEIJ interns moderated a discussion about period poverty with Lynette Medley, founder of No More Secrets, a local non-profit that distributes free menstrual products to women experiencing poverty in Philadelphia. Following the discussion, students completed a service project to create feminine hygiene kits; over 350 kits were donated to No More Secrets on behalf of Gwynedd students and alumnae. “We also launched Camp Inspire,” shared Anita. This week-long summer ‘confidence camp’ is designed to expose girls entering grades 6-8 to a STEAM field while developing their sense of purpose and self-worth. Girls now explore engineering, chemistry, drones, art, or musical theater and participate in multicultural conversations about the power of being a girl and what it means to lead.

Belonging at Gwynedd Mercy At Gwynedd, we strive to create a space in which every girl can fully celebrate and embrace every aspect of her identity, knowing that she will be loved, supported, and treated with kindness, respect, and mercy. Diversity: We welcome and

respect identities and opinions reflective of all members of society.

Equity: We implement policies, practices, and procedures that ensure that all members of our community can fully engage in it. Inclusion: We work to ensure that all members of our community feel a strong sense of community and belonging. Justice: We are intentional about addressing harm and restoring peace and safety to those impacted.

She belongs here. Camp Inspire

At Gwynedd, diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice are synonymous with belonging.

Gwynedd hosted an Alumnae Virtual Speakers Series Book Discussion on “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. GMA’s Leader of DEIJ Anita Roberson (top right) moderated the discussion with panelists (clockwise from bottom right): Karalyn McGrorty Derstine, Ed.D ’01 who teaches American History at GMA, Brooke Morris-Chott, MPS ’01 who serves as Advocacy and EDI Program Officer for Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures, a division of the American Library Association in Chicago, IL, and Alicia Jones, D.O. ’87 who serves as a Lead Associate at Vitus Consulting Group, LLC in Washington, DC.
