President Denise Corkery Marbach ’72 with students on the first day of school

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends, We have much to be proud of and grateful for at Gwynedd. When I reflect on the many facets of our beloved, esteemed institution—the innumerable accomplishments of our students and alumnae, our shared vision and charted course for Gwynedd’s future, and the continued generosity of our entire community in support of our mission; the evidence is indisputable. In the following report, we honor the remarkable young women of Gwynedd’s Class of 2019. Our graduates embody what is best about the Academy; shaped by an academic community that fosters love of learning, critical thinking, collaboration, stewardship, mercy values, and lifelong sisterhood. Our newest alumnae make us immensely proud, and we look forward to celebrating their future achievements. Speaking of the future, I am delighted to share that Gwynedd’s looks brighter than ever. I encourage you to learn more about “She is the Future.” Launched in 2019, Gwynedd’s strategic plan is focused on educating, inspiring, and empowering generations of women leaders. Its bold initiatives are shaping the way our educators teach, the way our students learn, and the way our community lives the Mercy mission.

Please also join me in recognizing members of our community whose generous annual support enhances the educational experience at Gwynedd and makes it possible for many students to attend. Thanks to greater participation, gifts to the Mercy Fund have increased by 52% over two years. The School also has been able to increase its financial aid offerings by 82%, due in large part to alumnae and parent participation in the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program. Together, we are making a Gwynedd education accessible for more families than ever before in our 159-year history. All of this is only possible through the collaboration and support of our great community. I truly am grateful for your partnership and know even greater things are ahead as we continue to advance the Mercy mission, ensure the legacy of Catherine McAuley, and deliver on the promise of “She is the Future.”

In Mercy,

Denise Corkery Marbach ’72, P ’05, ’09

Congratulations TO THE CLASS OF 2019 by Alyssa Gesek ’17

Ninety-nine members of the Class of 2019 were celebrated at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School’s 158th Commencement. Today, all are recognized as Gwynedd graduates at colleges and universities throughout the country. On June 1, Commencement morning, the Class of 2019 processed into the Performing Arts Center in traditional Gwynedd Mercy fashion, wearing white dresses and carrying red roses tied with gold ribbon. They were led by two flagbearers—Alumnae Association President Bethanne Mascio Connolly ’03 and Incoming Student Council President Tess Flanigan ’20—followed by the Faculty and Board of Trustees in academic regalia. Delivering the Invocation, graduate Kimberly Motz spoke of the bond of Mercy that ties Gwynedd girls together throughout their four years at the Academy and into the future. Salutatorian Natalie Dolan continued the theme, reminiscing about the class’s journey through Gwynedd and affirming the graduates would go out into the world in solidarity and Mercy. The class sang their selected graduation song, “Wherever I Go” by Hannah Montana, voicing how the ideals, memories and relationships gained during their four years at Gwynedd will always be of value. Each graduate then walked across the stage and curtsied—a longtime custom of the Academy—as her name was called and she received her gold medal and diploma from President

Denise Corkery Marbach ’72 and Principal Mary E. Kirby. Special medals also were bestowed upon graduates for honor, school spirit, service, leadership, Christian womanhood, and academics. President Marbach concluded the awarding of medals by congratulating the graduates on their many achievements and thanking them and their parents for being great ambassadors for Gwynedd and Mercy education. She was joined by Board of Trustees Chair Kathleen Kirk Bellwoar ’81 who introduced the 2019 Commencement Speaker, Kristina Wahl ’93. As president of the Barra Foundation, Wahl is responsible for ensuring the private foundation’s continued investment in innovation in arts and culture, education, and health and human services to strengthen communities in the Greater Philadelphia region. She also is a former student body president and past trustee of Gwynedd, a graduate and past trustee of La Salle University, and a graduate of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Wahl emphasized, “Success is not how high you climb the corporate ladder or how much money you make, but how you help your brothers and sisters.” She also encouraged the graduates to have the courage to embrace their imperfections,

GWYNEDD MERCY ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL STRATEGIC PLAN

Our Vision We will educate, inspire, and empower generations of women leaders.

6 STRATEGIC PLAN

Our Journey

The Power of Community For over 150 years, Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School has upheld its strong tradition of academic excellence and empowerment in the education of young women rooted in Mercy values. Our graduates go forth prepared to succeed in college and beyond and inspired to make a difference in their chosen fields—and in the world—as prominent business leaders, diplomats in developing nations, leading scientists, respected physicians, inspiring educators, award-winning athletes, and accomplished musicians and artists, to name a few. As our world changes and evolves at an ever faster pace, our commitment to our girls is more important than ever. It is our duty to equip them to inspire a Mercy-filled future for the world. They are the future, and our future is in their hands. Within each of our girls lies the capacity and responsibility to share her strengths and gifts in her own way to empower future generations. When we embarked on our strategic planning journey in 2018, we knew that inclusivity would be key to planning for the road ahead. At each turn, we connected with the people who make Gwynedd such a special place—our students, alumnae, faculty, staff, and parents. In total, more than 1,400 data points formed our vision. This strategic plan, more than any other in our history, grows from our shared values.

She is the Future

Launched in 2019, is focused on empowering generations of women leaders and will chart the course for our future. It is shaping the way our educators teach, the way our students learn, and the way our community lives the Mercy Mission.

Turn the page to learn about the plan’s five goals in the areas of Education, Leadership, Wellness, Connection and Vitality.

Our Story

The Strength of Mercy It all began with CATHERINE McAULEY, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, who turned her experience of poverty and the subjugation of women in Ireland in the 1800s into decades of academic opportunities for girls. She was a courageous visionary who collapsed boundaries without hesitation or fear. While the concept of strategic planning would have been foreign to Catherine, her strategic approach was ingenious, such as in deliberately locating her initial House of Mercy in a highly reputable precinct of Dublin, Ireland, where it would gain the attention of the privileged and influential. With her “no such thing as no” and “can do” attitude, she overcame incredible obstacles. Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831 to provide religious, educational, and social services to women and children. They believed that education opens doors—and in 1861, the Academy of the Sisters of Mercy, now Gwynedd Mercy Academy, opened its own doors to help young women in the Philadelphia area unlock their potential. What an inspiring legacy she has given us.

7

Our strategic plan

is an extension of Catherine’s dream and has given us an exciting new direction that uniquely positions Gwynedd to move fearlessly toward the future while strengthening our Mercy mission. Thirty-one work projects have been designed to achieve our goals. Read about our progress in the next President’s Report, coming September 2020.

MARIA LUTZ McHUGH ’46 INITIATIVE FOR GWYNEDD ATHLETICS Ensuring a Legacy Gwynedd commemorates a pioneer in women’s athletics, Maria Lutz McHugh ’46, with the establishment of the Maria Lutz McHugh ’46 Fund for Gwynedd Athletics. A proud graduate of the Class of 1946, Maria promoted women and sports at Gwynedd for more than four decades as a student-athlete, teacher, coach, and the Academy’s first athletic director. All gifts in support of the fund help GMA to upgrade and maintain athletic facilities and equipment, retain and hire the best coaches, and support operating budgets for the School’s 13 sports teams. Support also has ensured the naming of GMA’s existing gymnasium and an award for outstanding commitment to Gwynedd Athletics in Maria’s honor. WHAT DOES OUR NEW LOOK MEAN? Inspired by “She is the Future,” Gwynedd’s new look— an evolution of our prior logo, crest and shield—visually strengthens our identity as a Mercy school and distinguishes Gwynedd and our community in a way that is fresh, recognizable and inspirational. The inlaid cross of our new logo, crest and shield is a three-in-one cross inspired by a cross worn daily by Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy. It celebrates our heritage as a Mercy School and our commitment to nurturing generations of women leaders rooted in Mercy values. A ribbon carrying the School’s motto Veritas et Misericordia (Truth and Mercy)—virtues to which every member of the Gwynedd community aspires to—has returned to the crest. The new profile and proportions of the crown have been designed to exude majesty, representing the dignity, grace and confidence characteristic of a Gwynedd graduate. Five inlaid gems represent the five critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy. More power to her—she is the future. Keep our dream in mind each time you notice our new look!

She is the Future.
