Currently, oil is only being produced from the Stabroek Block which is operatedbyAmerica'stopoil producer,ExxonMobil, with oil production over 600,000 barrels per day from three developments in that block. ‘Guyana’s access to info law is a farce’
Describing the current lawas“completelyuseless,” transparency advocate, Alfred Bhulai has called for a complete revamp of the AccesstoInformationAct.
Duringanepisodeofthe Kaieteur Radio programme, 'Oil Talk' with the Oil and Gas Governance Network (OGGN),Bhulai,anEnergy Technologist, noted that in its current state, the law m a k e s a c c e s s i n g information from public entities, animpossibletask.
The OGNN member explained that while citizens' right to access to information is enshrined in the constitution, the Access t

He notedthatin2002,therewas some international pressure to bring about improvement for public access to informationglobally Tothis end, heopinedthatthelawis a farce in place for international bodies and conventions to believe that Guyana is operating in conformity to global standards for transparency withoutactuallydoingso.

He noted one particular experiencewiththeMinistry of Natural Resources for daily production and analysis of the oil and gas being produced offshore. I asked the Commissioner of Information, who is named in the Act but the information was never provided.
Bhulai stressed that this isduetothefactthatneither the public agency, Ministry nor Commissioner of Information is mandated to provide the information “The Commissioner of Information doesn't have to do anything because accordingtotheAct,hemay extend the period of sixty days for approval or denial and inform the applicant of thereasonstherefore.Where the Commissioner of Information fails to give access within the time specified, the information s h a l l b e d e e m e d inaccessible.”
“Therefore, the

that the public can get nowhere. “A revamp of the lawwhichaddspenaltiesfor non-adherence for giving the information should be added.”
Additionally, the transparency advocate pointedtothelackofannual reports to the National Assembly As such, Bhulai believesthatcitizensshould raise their voices in calling forachangetothelaw.“We definitely can't look to the Government to change it because in its present form, the law basically serves them,”hesaid.

Violenceagainstwomenbymeninoursocietycontinues unabated: molestations, beatings, rapes, maiming and murdersofwomenofallages, socialstrataandracesarenow practically daily staples of our media That the same pattern, which may be discerned in so many other social orders, does not in any way make the phenomenon any less reprehensible but, as a matter of fact, suggeststhatitscausesmayliedeepinthemalepsycheitself. Efforts by our authorities to deal with the problem of maleagainst-female violence – either in domestic settings or in more anonymous random and brutal encounters, unfortunately confront the consequences and not the deeper causesoftheacts.
Theresultisboundtobefrustratingforthepowersthatbe whiledeepeningthecynicismofwomenthatanythingcanbe done to resolve the situation. There are, of course, several theories about why men on the whole are more violent than womenandtheseareallessentiallyvariantsofthe“natureand nurture” arguments. Since it does not appear likely that geneticreengineeringofthemalehumanonthenearhorizon, we will have to revisit the “nurture” arguments – how the male psyche is formed and why it is so violence prone and misogynic.
Inotherwords,wewillhavetore-examineandhopefully come up with initiatives to alter our conceptions of what “manhood” ought to be. Going back to the hoary theories about the early specialisation of the stronger male in the violentartofhuntingotheranimalsforfood, wecontinueto inculcateinmenthebeliefthattheyneedtobetough, toprove theirphysicalstrengthandnevershowemotions.Thisisthe “machoman”ideal.InourownCaribbeansetting, thisideal was exacerbated in the brutal world of slavery and bonded labour. In the post-emancipation milieu, the best that we accomplished in modifying this image was to define “manhood” as a description of a man who was capable, managedhishouseholdandhadastrongsenseofrespectand respectability Men were expected to be the providers and protectorsandwhowereself-sufficient.
Thisorientationwasmostinculcatedinthemiddleclasses butofrecent,thescionsoftheseclasseshavemadeaU-turn and rejoined the underclass outlook that 'manhood' means someone who is tough; a player; competitive, acting as a protectorandavirilemale.Menlearntodenytheiremotions and focus all their needs regarding physical affection and nurturingintothesexact.
It is not surprising that, in the words of one researcher, theybecome“bothemotionallyincompetentandemotionally constipated.” “Manhood”, however, is still associated with power which, because of our oppressive past, is seen as capacity to dominate, to control, capacity to act in “masterful”ways–especiallywithwomen.
The bequeathed image of “woman”, unfortunately was that of a concubine, dedicated to serving the whims of the “master” – especially bearing and rearing his children.Any variancebythewomanfromherperceivedroleinthisscheme ofthingshistoricallybroughtdownthe“rodofcorrection”by the man. Very sadly, most women also inculcated this perspective and accepted her abuse as proper – some even s a w i t a s a n e x p r e s s i o n o f “ l o v e ” !
In Miguel Street, Naipaul recounted the story of the woman whooiledthecricketbatfromwhichshereceivedherweekly Saturday beating. As a society influenced by the patriarchal structure, we still unrealistically hang on to the traditional definitionofwhatitmeanstobeamanirrespectiveofthehigh unemployment rate and weakened traditional values, compoundedbytheincreaseofthenumberofwomenwhoare educated.Menturntoviolenceagainstwomenastheirsense of“manhood”isthreatenedbychangesinthestatusquo–and the latter process is occurring at an ever-increasing pace. In additiontoredefiningwhat“manhood”meansinoursociety, especially as it relates to women, we will however have to devise ways for men to maintain their masculinity and to sustaintheirself-esteem.
DearEditor, Following up on the debate about the use of finger print identification (biometrics) for voting purposes, it should be noted that the Government is seeking to use digitized biometric identification in every sphere of the conduct of public affairs except GECOM.
At GECOM, the PPP/C-
nominated commissioners, along with the chairperson, are the opponents to the use of finger print identification attheplaceofpoll. They manufacture every reason why it cannot or shouldnotbedone.
Ironically, GECOM has implemented finger print identification as the means b y w h i c h i t s employees/workers sign in
andoutfromwork.GECOM has researched, costed and implemented the use of finger print identification, y e t t h e P P P / C commissioners, in cahoots with the Chairperson, consistentlyandpersistently find every reason why the same universally and GECOM-tried-and-tested methodcannotorshouldnot be use

The unanswered question is “Why?”, since the reasons given are baseless and cannot be justified. Imagine what the ulterior motive must be in thecontextoftheconductof elections.

DearEditor, March 10, 2025, brings
back a memory no Guyanese, includingmyself, would want to relive, the brutalmurderofformerGDF officer, Courtney CrumEwing.Hewassimplyusing his voice to advocate for potential voters to reject the PPP/C in the May 11, 2015 elections.
March 10, 2025, marked
the 10th anniversary of his senseless killing in the quiet community of Diamond, EBD.Tothisday, hisfamily continues to hope for justice andthetruthsurroundinghis death.
Many high-profile deaths occurred under the PPP/C administration. The families of the late Satyadeow Sawh (April 2006), Ronald Waddell
(January 2006), and
Courtney Crum-Ewing (March 2015) are still waitingforjusticeregarding their loved ones' horrific murders. However, it seems thatthePPP/Cisunwillingto allow for any closure on thesetragicdeaths.
Like many Guyanese, I oftenwonderwhythePPP/C continuestoresistholdingan inquiry into these
assassinations, which have left deep, lasting wounds within the families and the nation.
Itismysincerehopethat the perpetrators, or those who orchestrated these crimes, will one day be brought to justice and that the families of the departed willfinallyfindclosure.

The PPP/C achieved mission impossible when they embarked on the resurrection of Rose Hall Estate
DearEditor,
That the Coalition grossly mismanaged the Agriculture Sector is an understatement They deliberately 'scissored' (or chain sawed?) the national budgetary allocation for the sector and to add insult to injury, they placed at the helm, the most incompetent minister ever to hold that portfolio. It was the biggest single blunder ever made by a government and it did not only result in willful loss of billionsofdollarsinstanding canes, infrastructures, machinery and equipment but as karma would have, it costtheAPNU/AFCitsterm in Office This was the
unconscionable closure of four grinding sugar estatesestateswhichweretopsugar producers and which could have been rehabilitated with the timely and suitable capitalinjection.Instead, the entire GUYSUCO was intentionally starved of capital inputs to justify closure. Then, the horrific wage freeze which churned the stomachs of the sugar workers. The abandonment of the sugar workers was complete. The will to allow GUYSUCO's survival was grossly lacking. In addition, the Coalition Government sawanopportunitygivenby the EU price cuts, to put Skeldon,RoseHall,Enmore
and Wales Sugar Estates under the guillotine, thereby extracting its pound of flesh from the sugar workers whomtheysawassupporters of the PPP This perception by the Coalition would have eventually resulted in more and more sugar workers gravitating towards that party-their game plan failed miserably
In December 2018, the No Confidence Motion was theharbingeroftheeventual downfalloftheCoalitionand ironically it was voted 'yes' by a Coalition Member of Parliament,Mr Charrandass Persaud from Canje, where the Rose Hall Estate is located and which was
outrageously and spitefully closed by his government in 2017 Mr. Persaud had realized that the Coalition Government was in fact the enemy of the sugar workers and the promise to give the workers 20% increase and thepledgenevertocloseany s u g a r e s t a t e ( a s recommended by the costly CommissionofInquiry)was just empty rhetoric meant to deceive the masses and to gainpower,and-asthegame plan of the Coalition would haveit-theendhadjustified the means. Service and this estate had continued to perform creditablyuntilitsclosure.
This was poetic justice.
The Coalition government has fallen and Rose Hall Estate has risen from the ashes, from the pyre on which the Coalition had condemned it to be burnt.
The records will show that when the Coalition assumed Office in 2015, Rose Hall Estate produced 29,768 tons ofsugar.
This was mainly due to inputsmadebythePPP/Cin the years before. But as the hands of the Coalition came into the equation, the production started to fall. In 2016,itwas20,581tonsand in2017(theyearthedecision to close was made) production was 22,381 tons.
ThebudgetedTC/TSwas13 andtheactualTC/TSwas15 (tonscanepertonssugar).
Wasthereastrongreason to close? That is the reason why the Commission of Inquiry did not recommend closure.
Moreover, the financial records would provide the evidence and testify that capital expenditure allocation dwindled and despite this, the paltry sums allocated were not fully utilized; purchase requests and purchase orders were ignored.
The intention of the Coalition was laid bare in theserecords.
The PPP/C achieved mission impossible when they embarked on the resurrection of Rose Hall Estate. In 2020, I witnessed
first-hand, the beginning of thejourneytorehabilitatethe Rose Hall Estate and as the Estate Manager at that time, Mr Dukhia, had lamented it was'panoramicdestruction'everything that the eyes set upon were completely destroyed.
It was the work of monstrous proportions which could have only been carried out by utterly heartless monsters who did notonlydestroythetangible fixed assets but the most important assets of all- the people.
As is the tradition and modus operandi of the PPP, they once again set out to recreate what the PNC and its cohorts destroyed It happenedfrom1992to2015 and the again from 2020 to present.
Today, the Rose Hall Estate lives again, thanks to the Government, the ManagementofGUYSUCO andtheManagementofRose Hall Estate More specifically, thanks to the Honorable Minister Mr Zulfikar Mustapha, who nevergaveup.
Hewasunrelentinginhis pursuitofresolvingissuesas theyaroseandstooduptothe destructive elements of the Coalition, in and out of Parliament, to emphasized hissupportforGUYSUCO. He vowed never to stop supportingGUYSUCOuntil itbecomesviable.

It can be a struggle for parents to make ends meet, particularly in those crucial first months when the expensesforanewborncan beoverwhelming
This cash grant will provide much-needed financial relief, allowing parents to afford basic necessities such as diapers, formula,medicalcheck-ups, and other essentials that
contribute to the health and well-beingoftheirbabies.
Beyond immediate financial support, this initiative has significant long-term social and economicbenefits.
By giving families a helping hand at the very start of their children's lives, we are investing in a healthier, stronger, and more secure future for our nation
Parents who are less burdened by financial stress, can focus on providing a nurturing environment, leading to better early childhood development
Additionally, this program will help boost local businesses, as parents will spend this money within their communities, supporting small retailers, pharmacies, and service providers Editor, in my view, this move by the current Government demonstrates a clear commitment to the wellbeing of Guyanese families and it shows that real progress is being made to improve the lives of our people
I feel confident that this initiative will remain a staple of our country's social policies and that we will continue to see more programsaimedatuplifting the most vulnerable members of our society Congratulations to the Government for taking this positive step, and I encourage them to keep prioritising the well-being ofourcitizens

TerrenceCampbell,aNatural Resource Fund (NRF) Investment Committee member, on Thursday afternoon filed a judicial review application challenging the Government ofGuyana'smanagementand transparency of the Natural ResourceFund.
The application names the Attorney General of Guyana and the Senior Minister in the Office of the PresidentwithResponsibility forFinanceasrespondents. According to a press releasebyCampbell, thelegal action challenges the t r a n s p a r e n c y a n d accountability of major withdrawals from the Fund, which have amounted to approximately US$2.61 billion or more than half a trillion Guyana Dollars over thepastthreeyears.
According to the application, withdrawals
totaledUS$607.65millionin 2022, followed by US$1,002.13millionin2023. In2024,withdrawalsreached US$850millionfromJanuary to September, with an additional US$153 456 millionwithdrawnduringthe year'sfinalquarter Campbell, appointed to theInvestmentCommitteeon July 8, 2024, demonstrates through official government records that these withdrawalsarebeingusedto finance regular government operations.
The National Estimates for 2025 explicitly show current expenditure deficits ofG$46,016millionfor2024 and G$75,929 million for 2025, confirming that Natural Resource Fund proceeds are being used to finance routine government operations instead of the specific purposes mandated by Section 16(2) of the Natural Resource Fund Act 2021.
T h e a p p l i c a t i o n
highlights serious violations of the Santiago Principles, which are explicitly incorporated into Guyanese law through Section 4 of the NaturalResourceFundAct.
Thelegalchallengeseeks declarations that all withdrawals from the Fund must be exclusively used to financenationaldevelopment priorities, including green economy initiatives, and essential projects directly related to ameliorating the effects of major natural disasters.
The application provides evidence of the complete absence of comprehensive d o c u m e n t a t i o n o f withdrawals, clearcriteriafor “national development priorities,” robust tracking mechanisms, and regular detailed reporting to the National AssemblyIn his application, Campbell requeststheCourttoorderthe Minister of Finance to provideadetailedbreakdown ofallexpendituresfromprior withdrawals within 30 days and establish proper procedures for documenting futurewithdrawals.
This request is supported by evidence showing that none of the projects listed in the 2025 Public Sector Investment Programme explicitly identifies Natural Resource Fund financing, despite the massive withdrawalsfromtheFund.

This logic is flawed and short-sighted Even the uniforms worn by some teams now reflectAmerican basketball culture, with names like Lakers, Boston Celtics, andRockets, further eroding our national identity This decision blatantly disregards the development of grass root athletics in our country. The January-to-April school term is already packed with critical activities, including Marshall Manning competitions, the National Grade Six Assessment, and the start of CTEC exams practicals. Many of these athletes who would be competing at Nationals are the same ones participating in Marshall Manning competitions.
Additionally, the teachers best suited to accompany these athletes are those specialized in Physical Education, Sports, HomeEconomics, andother technical subjects, will be under immense pressure to complete grading and submissions of SBAgrades. Why are we once again

Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs and
InternationalCooperationand Opposition Member of Parliament Amanza WaltonDesir has confirmed that the chairmanship of the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relationswillbehandedover shortlytotheopposition.
In a telephone interview with this publication, she explained that there is an arrangement with the parliamentary sectoral committees, where specific committees are chaired for one year by the government andthenchairmanshiprotates totheopposition.
However, in order for the chair to be rotated “the government has to convene a meeting of the Foreign Relations Committee, and as you know, the government has failed to do so. So they undertook to convene a meeting soonest, not only for the purposes of the chair, but certainly to brief the sectoral committeeonallthathasbeen happening with Venezuela. But to date, I have seen no action in that regard,” she said. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International CooperationHughToddisthe currentChairandtheonewho has to convene the meeting. However, it has been a week since the discussions were held during the meeting with the President and he is yet to dososhestressed.
Further probing revealed that she shares the same sentiments voiced by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton at his recent press conference in relation to the government committee members showing up at meeting for a quorum to be m e t Wa l t o n - D e s i r highlighted that this has also been “happening with the Public Accounts Committee, and it happens with several committees where the governmentbelievesthatthey should not be subject to scrutiny Becauseifyouknow
what the mandate of the sectoral committees is, the constitutionally mandated committees that will enable parliament to scrutinise and review the work of particular sectors ”“Therefore, when government members on these committees failed to show up, no quorum is met andtothatdegree, thereisno accountability and transparency provided to citizens, as meetings cannot be convened without a quorum met,” the Shadow ForeignMinistersaid.
On Friday at his weekly pressconference,Nortonwas asked if the committee was briefed on the Venezuela situation, and if that came up during his meeting with the President. He told the media thatwhileheindeedraisedthe issue, he permitted the Shadow Minister to speak on the matter “She spoke to it, and Minister Todd said, well, we're handing over… this is his exact word we're h a n d i n g o v e r t h e chairmanshipshortly Sothey neverrespondtotherealnonmeeting of it, but they say they'rehandingitover.”
Norton highlighted that handing over the committee does not remedythe situation as the government can very well do what they are currently doing with the Public Accounts Committee. They hand it over and then refusetoturnup;therefore,no meeting can be held as a quorumisnotmet.
In a previous column, I had opined that OFAC's sanctions explicitly block theMohameds'propertyand financialinterestswithinthe United States or in the possession of U.S. persons. Also, U.S. persons, entities, andfinancialinstitutionsare prohibited from engaging in transactions involving the sanctionedindividuals.
However, I noted that thereisnoexplicitprovision prohibiting the Government of Guyana or Guyanese businesses from engaging with the Mohameds, unless those transactions involve U.S. persons, U.S. banks, or the U.S. financial system. The secondary sanctions outlined in the OFAC statement focus on financial institutions and "other persons" engaging in "certain transactions" with the sanctioned individuals. I argued that the government ofGuyanahasadutytoseek clarificationfromOFACifit believes there is uncertainty astohowfarthesesecondary sanctionsextend.
It was my view that the PPPC government appears to be misrepresenting the scope of these sanctions, implying that all Guyanese or any association with the Mohameds could lead to sanctions This position, however, isnotsupportedby the OFAC statement. There is no indication that local individualsorbusinessesare automatically prohibited from transacting business withtheMohameds.
Furthermore,Ialludedto the fact that the secondary sanctions have not been
applied to the Government ofGuyana, aswasexplicitly done with Venezuela and Iran.Or,asImaynowadd,as was done via Executive Order 14024 (2022) and relatedOFACdirectivesthat had imposed sanctions on key Russian companies and oligarchs. Those directives had warned that any entity including the Russiangovernment—could face penalties for materially supportingthem.
There is no such explicit prohibition against the Government of Guyana doing business with the Mohameds.
This means the government is not outright prohibited from doing businesswiththeMohameds unless such transactions involve U S -linked financial systems US business, citizens, or US permanent residents. While the U S could later determine that certain dealings fall under secondarysanctions, thereis currently no blanket restriction on Guyana's governmentinrelationtothe Mohameds.
And I concluded that given the lack of specificity as to what constitutes “certain transactions of activities” in OFAC's paragraph on secondary sanctions, the prudent courseofactionwouldbefor the government to seek official clarification from OFAC, rather than making premature or misleading assumptionsabouttheextent oftherestrictions.
TheMohamedsandtheir

Is the person still being paid a salary by the government, and if so, would this not constitute the government dealingwiththatperson?

Thegovernmentalsohas a duty to its citizens and to ensure that they are treated fairly TheUnitedStateshas so far failed to advance any evidence of wrongdoing on thepartoftheMohameds. It may have such evidence but its failure to share that information with the governmentwhileseekingto impose sanctions of our nationalsiscontemptuous.
Vice President Jagdeo does not have to bow to any US pressure, especially when no evidence has been forthcoming. He also ought to know that secondary sanctions, which extend beyond a sanctioning country's jurisdiction, to penalize third parties engaging in lawful trade with sanctioned entities, are

“Outrageous, vicious, anddistorted.” Theidentity of the speaker would surprise, coming up shortly It's obvious that someone is angry, agitated almost uncontrollably Something terrible has been done to them In recalling those sharp, piercing words, I think of Guyana's two chief governors, His Excellency President Irfaan Ali and the never-less-than-honorable Vice President.Considering
their own conclusions to variousquestionsatdifferent times about major developments, those flamefilledwordscouldbetheirs. Though different words have been used on different occasions that generated much heat, “outrageous, vicious, anddistorted”could closely represent their own angry postures- their supposedlyhurtfeelings, Both HEAli and the VP have gone on record
pretending to being the victim. They have been wronged, and a litany of injustices has been inflicted upon them. In working up a sweat and claiming innocence of any leadership misstep or, even worse, suspected calculated escapades that injure Guyanesetaxpayers, thetwo localleadersoftentimeshave crossed into righteousness. Maliciously wounded, they havebeen.
No one could be so boiling mad, if they didn't stand on the strongest, cleanest grounds. No one could be so barefaced as to go on the offensive, through taking public umbrage, at where he or she has been pushed, without proper basis. Relentlessly pushed and backed into a corner, then prompts that wrathful shower of words spat out in defiance.
Though I have lost track
ofthecommentary that accompanies European sporting combat, there is still some familiarity with what was a mainstay of popularAmericansports. It was that the best defense is a strong offense. In other words, do not standstill Do not allow others to think of a sitting duckthatcouldbepickedoff atwill. Go in the opposite direction. Take the fight to theenemies.
Take aim at those who torment, who get under the skin and rub nerves raw I invite my fellow citizens to recallthehighlightsofmany of President Ali's and the VP's whiplashes at the independent media of Guyana Sharp and savaging, both of them have been Like a wounded apparition in the dark, they comeapartattheseams, and lash out at the nearest, most convenient objects of their rage.Daretoaskoneasimple question that he doesn't like about his oil portfolio, the hopes and aspirations of poor Guyanese, and he transforms into the best representation of an angry god.
Despite being exposed frequently as one made of snowflakes, he persists with the farce of being a man unjustly picked upon, one leftwithnoalternativebutto smashwhoeverisinhisway It is his way of evading seriousquestions, andwhich has the added utility of gettingeven.
Make a straightforward inquiry of PresidentAli and he becomes all twisted into knots, amazeofhighvoltage electrical wires seemingly on the edge of electrocuting any offender in his vicinity
This much I can say with considerable authority: if there is one area in which there is transparency in President Ali's government and leadership style, it has been his willingness to engageinverbaldustupsand smashups. I regret to inform the Guyanese public that, in President Ali's mind, that is w h a t p a s s e s f o r accountability In this tiniest of snapshots of Guyanese twobulldogleaders, thishas been their verbal temperature and body language.
In the circumstances, I have one question remaining, only one: when all this is weighed and measured, who are the ones
that can be said, with justification, to be “outrageous, vicious, and distorted.”
For the edification of all Guyanese, the owner of those fateful words was a tragicAmericanbythename of Richard Milhous Nixon. Those three to four words convey the essence of how he raved and ranted, how he raged, against theAmerican media.
Not on just one backbreaking issue, but also on a second. I confess to beingselectivebutthenature of the two issues and their sordid histories speaks for themselves They speak enough, so that Guyanese can think for themselves as theyseekthetruthonwhois genuine, who is taking liberties with truth and the goodwill of all citizens. The first issue wasVietnam. An issue that was wrenching America apart; one that forced a sitting president to callitquits;onethatRichard Nixonrodeallthewaytothe White House and then his waitingfall.
He ordered the secret bombing of Cambodia, and then made heavy going of defendingthatmovewhenit cametolight.Intheinstance ofWatergate, hewaspartofa largecoverupofacrimethat went up to the presidential suite. And what did Nixon do? He stonewalled, deceived, and misled the media and the American people.

Recent events in our local politics have seen one of the two major political parties in panic mode.
The PPP , that has long relied on its hold over the electorate, particularly in its strongholds, is now faced with the unsettling prospect that its support is not as unshakable as it once believed.
The uproar in Lima Sands over the weekend when young businessman, Azruddin Mohamed touched down bears testimony to this fact.
The opposition PNC, too, must confront the reality that it is failing to capitalise on growing public frustration, instead appearing as an uninspired alternative rather than a credible challenger.
If there is one lesson from Guyana's political history, it is that when both major parties feel threatened, they will set aside their differences and close ranks against a common enemy.
Should an emerging force gain enough traction, it is not unthinkable that the PPP and PNC, longtime adversaries, would join forces to protect their shared monopoly on power.

torney-at-Law concerning this matter,” the Ministry announced. Regarding the incident, Kaieteur News had reported that Benjamin was employed by Dindyal Sookram for a sub-contracted job and was tasked with operating an excavator on the north-eastern side of the Kara Kara land.
His job was to dig a drain to allow lodged water to run out to the Kara Kara Creek. While doing so, the excavator sank in the swampy area.
“The excavator sank from the side and became submerged in the swamp, trapping the deceased (Benjamin) inside the cabin,” police had said in its report. It was also reported that operators from another company, BOSAI Minerals, discovered the submerged excavator and raised an alarm.
They rendered assistance by breaking the excavator cabin’s glass window and pulling Benjamin from the vehicle. Unfortunately, he was
already dead when he was freed from the excavator. Meanwhile, with a number of workplace deaths reported and being investigated by the Ministry, Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, is reminding employers and workers of the importance and need for good safety and health practices in the workplace so that similar incidents/accidents that can result in the loss of lives of loved ones can be avoided.
From page 15 underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s transplant services and ensuring timely and accessible care for patients,” the agency reported.
Not only has the equipment been procured, but a number of local health personnel have been trained in handling the equipment and in performing the testing. “On February 24-28, 2025, 15 laboratory personnel were trained on HLA testing, gaining hands-on experience with the newly acquired equipment at
the National Public Health Reference Laboratory. The lead trainer, Dr. Karina Omari, HLA laboratory expert from One Lambda, a well-known laboratory and biotechnology company based in the United States that specializes in HLA typing and antibody detection for organ and tissue transplantation,” the ministry announced.
At an in-briefing meeting with Dr. Omari and team, Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony emphasized the importance of this milestone for Guyana’s transplant programme. He noted that
“the establishment of the HLA laboratory marks a transformative step in our efforts to enhance organ and tissue transplantation in Guyana. With local HLA testing, patients will no longer have to bear the high costs of overseas testing, and results will be available much faster—ultimately improving the efficiency and success of transplants in the country.” It was reported by the ministry, that to date, the HOATTA has made significant strides in building the capacity of clinical staff at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation
(GPHC) involved in the transplant process.
Notably, several healthcare professionals have received advanced training in Barcelona, equipping them with the expertise needed to improve organ and tissue transplant services in Guyana. Additionally, Standard Operating Procedure and Protocols were developed and in 2024, and that the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation was assessed and certified as a transplant centre - the only certified transplant centre in the country.
