The PPP Government hasdonemuchworktostem runaway inflation in Guyana.
It was in October 2024 thattheGeneralSecretaryof the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, tookituponhimself to remind us of his Government’s dedication to alleviate the financial burdens faced by Guyanese citizens amid rising living costs.
Rising prices are not a PPP thing or a Guyanese thing, it was a global situation and to blame the rising prices on the PPP is most prejudicial and irrational The empirical evidence, even from China proves that the post-COVID global trend was indeed one of rising prices This phenomenon, often referred to as “post-pandemic inflation,” was driven by a combination of factors, including:
S u p p l y C h a i n Disruptions:Lockdownsand restrictionsonmovementled to severe disruptions in global supply chains, causing shortages of goods and increased transportation costs. InOctober2024,the Drewry World Shipping Index shows that the cost to
ship a 40-foot was up more than 250% compared to a year ago. That increase in shipping is being passed on to the consumers by the private sector and unfortunately, the Governmentispowerlesson this matter To ease the burdenthePPPhasremoved all taxes on fuel so that the private businesses can use these gains to ease the burdenonthesmallman.
· Increased Demand: As the Guyanese economy continues to expand at a rapid pace, this is driving a massive surge in consumer demand. Guyana is not a communist country where the Government tells the consumer what to buy and what not to buy Plus because of the smallness of our ports, there is an increased competition for shippingvesselstolandhere. So while Clive Thomas and the lot are asking for $100,000 and $200,000 for the Guyanese people, what they are not telling the people is that these government stimulus packages are further fueling demandfortoofewgoodsin Guyana. That is the classic reason for price increases when too many dollars are chasingtoofewgoods.
Commodity Price
Increases: The prices of commodities like food increased significantly over the last 12 months due to supply chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and increased cost of wages and demand from the Global South Unfortunately, because of Guyana’s production inefficiency in agriculture, we have been increasingmorefoodintothe country and this is driving prices up since it is contributing to the importation of foreign inflation into Guyana. The solution, the Ministry of Agriculture has to get its act together and grow our food production by as much as 30% every year in all food categories. Guyana is in urgent need for an active National Development Strategy for the Agriculture Portfolio.
Labour Shortages: Labour shortages in Guyana have led to wage increases, whichwerethenpassedonto consumers in the form of higher prices. Guyana has now found itself importing truck drivers, plumbers, carpentersandsomanyother skilled persons for overseas and this is driving up the pass-through for the final food product. People with higher wages are willing to
pay more for food as compared to most pensioners who are on a fixed income and cannot afford to pay more. The impact is real and more has tobedoneforthepensioners andthoseonfixedincome.
W h i l e t h e P P P Government is doing everything within its power todealwiththeimpactofthe increased cost-of-living, thereisalimittohowmuchit cando. Iamappealingtothe MinistryofAgriculturetogo on a GROW MORE FOOD campaign by distributing seeds to every householder and also offering them free fertilizer and seedlings so that more people can grow their foods and mind their chicken(evenifitisadozen at a time) to stem this crisis aroundfoodprices. Further the Ministry of Social Security must offer the pensioners, the disabled and those on social assistance hampers to ease the pain for those at the bottom of the barrel. What the PPP has done wonderfully is to remove taxes from various food products to help stabilise prices. Maybe some more taxes on food items can be removedinBudget2015.

The administration should re-engineer the policyfocusoftheupcoming disbursements so that it
responds more to poverty considerations where we all know that between 280,000 and 420,000 Guyanese (roughly 40%-60% estimate of the population) are either in poverty or financial insufficiency.
If we estimate that Guyana has about 14,000 children (based on annual student enrollment) from ages 1 through 17, then 50%ofthetotalnumberof 238,000 children across this age group would be 119,000 children, a proxy for the number of poor childreninthecountry

The Local Content Secretariat is examining the procurement guidelines being used by companies operating in the oil and gas sector as several inconsistencies and a lackofstandardisationhaveraisedsignificant concerns. A call for more cultural centres
Burnham’s decision to d i v e r t t h e I n d i a n Immigration Fund towards constructing the National Cultural Centre (NCC) in Georgetown remains one of the most contentious decisions in Guyana’s history At the heart of the controversywasnottheidea of building a national cultural landmark but the questionable use of funds that were historically earmarked for the benefit of Indian indentured immigrants.
The outrage was never about opposing cultural development but about the injustice of taking resources meant for a specific community without their consent and repurposing them in a way that offered them little direct benefit. Critics at the time proposed alternatives, including building smaller regional culturalcentres Theirvoices, however, were drowned out in the cacophony of Burnham’sauthoritarianrule
Yet,thiscolumnbelieves that while it is essential to acknowledge the past, we must now look forward Withoilmoneynowflowing through the veins of our economy, the government has the resources to rectify thishistoricaloversight. And in doing so, address the longstandingneglectofrural areas. It’s time to rekindle the idea of rural cultural centres and invest in spaces that can nurture and celebrate the diverse talents scattered across Guyana’s villagesandtowns.
Rural Guyana is a treasure trove of cultural
talent. From the rhythmic beats of tassa drums to the mesmerizing steps of folk dancesandthedramaticflair of amateur theatre, the villages brim with potential. Unfortunately, this talent often fades into obscurity duetoalackofopportunities and venues to showcase it. While the NCC stands as a monument to national culture, it is largely inaccessible to the majority of the population living outsideofGeorgetown.
The government has an opportunity no, a responsibility to change this. It’s time to give rural communities the facilities necessary to harness their culturaltalents.Anetworkof rural cultural centres could provideplatformsformusic, dance, drama, and art, fosteringasenseofprideand unity while preserving Guyana’s rich cultural heritage.
During the era of cinemas, many villages had bustling theatres that were the heart of community entertainment Cinema theatres were spread across the coastland since it was thenthemainformofpublic entertainment. As cinemas became obsolete, these buildings were left abandoned, standing as ghostly reminders of a bygoneera.Insteadofletting them rot, the government could have purchased them from their private owners and transformed these spaces into vibrant cultural hubs. This column has long advocatedfortheacquisition and repurposing of these buildings.ButthePPP/Chas lon

The benefits of rural cultural centres would extend far beyond the arts. These spaces could become focal points for community gatherings. They could inspire young people to stay

Two Opposition MPs are demanding Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and Finance Minister Colm Imbert break their silence on the Government’s stance on the SRC report. Making their positions clear yesterday, Princes Town MP Barry Padarath and Couva South MP Rudranath Indarsingh shunned the proposed pay hike, especially for Dr Rowley.
The SRC has recommended that the Prime Minister’s salary be increased by $28,167 over what it currently is.
The prime minister’s salary is currently $59,680, which was set in 2013 and would rise in two layers, increasing from October 1, 2020, to September 30, 2023, to $80,000, and then from October 1, 2023, onward to $87,847. The report laid in Parliament on November 15 also recommended increases for the President, the Chief Justice, the Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly, the Opposition Leader, MPs, members of the Judiciary, the Police Commissioner, and other senior public servants.
Padarath told Guardian Media, “We hold on to the
it’s not the right time
view that the leader of the Opposition expressed a few months ago that politicians shouldn’t benefit from any SRC recommendations for increases. For politicians, we reject it! “Why is the Government so silent on the SRC report? What is your position? Are you going to accept or are you going to reject the Salaries Review Commission report?”
Going a step further to explain why it has been rejected by the Opposition, Indarsingh said now was not the right time.
During an Opposition media briefing at UNC’s headquarters in Chaguanas yesterday, Indarsingh said, “Given the hardship, given what is currently prevailing in the public domain and so on,
this is not the time.” Today marks ten days since the report was laid in Parliament, but the Government’s stance remains unknown.
Dr Rowley and Imbert are yet to respond to questions sent by Guardian Media yesterday. Efforts to contact Acting Prime Minister Stuart Young and Leader of Government Business Camille Robinson-Regis on the matter were also unsuccessful up to late yesterday. But according to Padarath, their silence speaks volumes. Padarath added, “The reason why they continue to remain so silent is that they know their polling is showing them, and their public relations handlers are telling them that their deceit and their corruption is fuelling their greed for back pay
and higher salary rates in this country, while you are telling public servants to hold strain until 2027.”
The SRC report comes amid an outcry among several unions for public servants to receive wage increases as well. Indarsingh told Guardian Media, Rowley must answer to these workers.
He said, “It is the duty of the PM and the cabinet to tell the citizens and workers what is their position on the report. We made it clear today that the PM must tell the workers at NIB, Port, T&TEC, WASA, NP, and public servants whether they should want their money to sleep out. Whether they will accept the report and pay the back pay before Christmas or the general election ... The working and middle classes alone cannot hold strain and ban their bellies and tighten their belts.”
The proposed increases coming out of the SRC report could cost taxpayers over $150 million in back pay. If the report is implemented, the PM will be entitled to receive $1.1 million in back pay. Not too far behind, PersadBissessar will be entitled to $960,700 in back pay.
Guardian Media also reached out to PersadBissessar for comment but received no response up to late yesterday. But the MPs said the ball is in the Government’s court to say whether the report will move forward.
UNFPA urges international support to deal with gender-based violence in Haiti
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) says it has received only 19 per cent of the requested US$28 million in international aid to deal with the gender-based violence in Haiti.
UNFPA director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Susana Sottoli, says in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country, 94 per cent of women are at risk of gender-based violence and their bodies have become “weapons of terror” for armed gangs. “Ninety-four per cent of women in Haiti are exposed to some form of gender-based violence, and of all the reports received, nearly 80 per cent concern sexual violence,” said Sottoli.
Haiti is going through a serious political and social situation due to gangs, which control more than 80 per cent of the capital Port-au-Prince. “Currently, there is no free and safe place in Haiti for women and especially for adolescent
girls. For women, any activity has become an adventure with a very high risk that their lives, and especially their bodies, will go wrong..,” said Sottoli. The UNFPA said that this “war” is taking place on “a battlefield that is women’s bodies,” gender violence, and especially sexual violence, is currently the weapon most used by these armed gangs. It said gangs use women as “negotiating
chips” and rape becomes a method of extortion to control territories or obtain funds.
The UN said that between January and March 2024, cases of sexual violence increased fivefold. Currently, about 1,500 cases are reported each month, but this figure could be much higher, most raped women suffer their trauma in silence and do not report it. Some even commit suicide.
Haiti’s political and socioeconomic crisis heightened following the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise at his private residence overlooking the capital. No one has appeared in court here in connection with his death, although some people have appeared before a United States court on charges linked to the killing. —WASHINGTON D.C. (CMC)

Greater private sector investment, more large-scale projects needed to push Caribbean’s renewable agenda
(CDB) The equitable
transition to energy efficiency and renewable energyisslowlyprogressing in the Caribbean but greater buy in and investment from the private sector, more
large-scale projects attractive to investors and increasing the technical capacity of the practitioners especially among women and girls is necessary if the region is to improve the uptick of green energy initiatives.
This was the joint position of representatives
o f t h e C a r i b b e a n Development Bank (CDB, the Bank), the Caribbean Centre for Renewable
Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) and Global Affairs Canada (GAC)duringdiscussionsat the 29th United Nations ClimateChangeConference (COP 29), in Baku, Azerbaijan.
According to CDB’s Acting Vice President (Operations)ThereseTurner Jones, “This is about what the energy transition should look like across the region not just focusing on decarbonization but looking

This can only improve the success of the much needed and highly complex green energy projects required by the Caribbean toward the required energy transition.
T h e a g e n c y representatives were speaking at a COP29 side event hosted by CDB entitled “SuRGE and the Caribbean Energy Transition” where they explored opportunities to expand the pool of concessional resources to support the regional energy transition.
Regional countries to benefit from early warning systems
B R I D G E TO W N , Barbados (CMC) — The Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) on Monday said regional countries stand to benefit significantly from early warning systems (EWS) that are tailored to the unique geographic, d e m o g r a p h i c a n d infrastructural factors of eachisland.
It said that by designing and customising these systems to address the specific challenges and needs of individual nations, disaster risk management and resilience can be enhancedensuringthateach countryisbetterpreparedto respond effectively to naturalhazards.
The CDB said that a high-level panel of experts explored the ideas in a d i s c u s s i o n o n “Strengthening Hydrometeorological & Early Warning Systems in the Caribbean” at the just
concluded United Nations ConferenceofParties(COP 29)inAzerbaijan.
It said the panel emphasised the critical role of early warning systems in mitigating the impacts of climate change, particularly the increasing intensity of hurricanes and other extreme weather events
Theexpertsalsohighlighted the need for a long-term, sustainablestrategyfocused on building resilience at both national and regional levels.
In 2022, the United Nations launched Early Warnings for All, an initiativedesignedtoensure that everyone is protected from hazardous weather, water, or climate events through life-saving early warning systems by the end of2027.
TheCDBsaidthatithas been working with regional andinternationalpartnersto strengthen the region’s disaster risk management
capacity, providing technical assistance and financial support for the developmentofrobustearly warningsystems.
Acting CDB’s Vice President of Operations, ThereseTurner-Jones,noted the importance of incorporating the unique characteristics of each island into the design of EWSintheregiontoreduce lossoflifeandpropertyand enhance preparedness for climate-relateddisasters.
“Early warning systems arejustlikehavingasmoke alarm in your home when something bad is about to happen.
It is important for countries to recognise that thesystemmustbecountryspecific because the islands of the Caribbean, while sharingcommonalities, also havedistinctfeatures.
“While there is a lot of homogeneity, there are also manyidiosyncraticfeatures. For example, Grenada with
the Grenadines, the Bahamas with family islands, and Guyana with indigenous communities thatareremote.
We need to design systems that can reach everyone,” said TurnerJones.
The Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management
Agency (CDEMA), ElizabethRiley, highlighted the significance of standardised tools, deeper understanding of risk and the need for strong national and regional policy frameworks that take into a c c o u n t g e n d e r considerations.
“Early warning systems are people centred and are about keeping people safe. These systems must be grounded in strong governance and require coordination among multiple actors at both the nationalandregionallevels.
“We have worked
extensively on developing policies and legislative frameworks for early warning systems in the region,”saidRiley
Other panellists in the discussion underscored the needforasustainable, longterm approach that goes
beyond addressing immediate hazards and emphasised the importance of stronger partnerships, improved financing mechanisms, better data systems, and more integrated approaches to disaster risk management andclimateadaptation.
TheheadoftheClimate Risk and Early Warning
“We need better financing solutions to ensure these systems are not just reactive but proactive in addressing the growingclimaterisks
T e c h n o l o g i c a l advances such as mobile alerts are making these systems more effective and accessible but we need continuedsupporttobridge the financing gap,” said Harding

Prosecutor drops federal criminal cases against Trump
(BBC NEWS) The special prosecutor who brought two key criminal casesagainstDonaldTrump has asked judges to drop bothofthemafterhisvictory in the 2024 presidential election.
Special counsel Jack Smith was overseeing cases accusingTrump of trying to overturn the 2020 election results and improperly storingclassifieddocuments after he left office. Trump had pleaded not guilty in bothcases.
In new documents filed on Monday, Mr Smith said the cases should be closed because of a Justice Departmentpolicythatbans the prosecution of a sitting president. “Ithaslongbeen the position of the Department of Justice that the United States Constitution forbids the federal indictment and subsequent criminal prosecution of a sitting President,”Smithwroteina
filingintheelectioncase.
“This outcome is not based on the merits or strength of the case against thedefendant,”Smithadded in the six-page filing. A judge must sign off on both decisions for them to be officially dismissed. Smith requested both cases be dismissed “without prejudice”, meaning the chargescouldberefiledafter Trump finishes his second term. Trump posted on his social media site Truth Social that the federal cases were “empty and lawless, and should never have been brought”. “It was a political hijacking, andalowpointin the History of our Country that such a thing could have happened, and yet, I persevered, against all odds,” he wrote. VicePresident-elect JD Vance said the prosecutions were “always political” “If DonaldJ.Trumphadlostan election, he may very well havespenttherestofhislife
inprison,”hewroteonsocial media. Trump had pledged togetridofSmithassoonas he took office Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith in 2022 to take over the two federal investigations into Trump’s conduct Smith has reportedly said he plans to stepdownnextyear
The request to dismiss Trump’selectionsubversion case marks an end to a lengthy legal saga. Smith had to refile charges against thepresidentbasedonaJuly Supreme Court ruling that Trump was immune from prosecution over “official acts” that took place while he was in the White House.
Smith had argued in a revised indictment that Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results wererelatedtohiscampaign and therefore not official acts.
TheCourtofAppealsfor the 11th Circuit was also weighing an appeal from Smith to carry on with the classified documents case, inwhichTrumpwasaccused of storing dozens of sensitive files in his Florida Mar-a-Lago resort and obstructing government efforts to retrieve them Trump-appointee Judge Aileen Cannon initially dismissed it because she ruled Smith was improperly appointedtoleadthecase.
When Trump won the 2024 election this month, Smithbegantotakestepsto wind down both cases, though Smith said in the Monday filing that the documents appeal would continue for two other defendants in the case,
Trump employees Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira.
Trump’s return to the White House left several state-level criminal cases against him in limbo, too. His sentencing for his criminal conviction in the state of New York has been indefinitelydelayed. Trump also faces state charges in Georgia for his attempts to overturn election results there, but that case faces delaysaswell.
An appeals court is considering whether to overturn a previous ruling allowing Fulton County DistrictAttorneyFaniWillis to stay on the case despite a relationship she had with a prosecutor she hired. Since Trump won the 2024 presidency, “his criminal problems go away”, said former federal prosecutor NeamaRahmani. “It’s well established that a sitting president can’t be prosecuted,”hesaid.

While Tyrrell’s accomplishmentsinthepool have brought pride to his school and admirers in Guyana, his relationship with the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) remains fraught withcontroversy
Despite being the country’s second-highest ranked swimmer based on World Aquatics points, behind Raekwon Noel, Tyrrell was overlooked for selection to represent
Guyana at the World Aquatics Championships in Hungarynextmonth.
The snub adds to a growing list of grievances Tyrrell has with GASA, whichhasbeencriticizedfor its lack of transparency and failure to fully support athletes competing at the internationallevel.
Tyrrell, who has been cleared to represent Guyana by World Aquatics, has faced years of hurdles from GASA regarding his eligibility to compete under thenationalflag.
Tyrrell’s battle with GASA is not new Despite his undeniable talent and consistentperformances, the

Critics of GASA have pointed to alleged favouritism and poor management as factors in thesedecisions, whichmany

KFC Guyana distance self from delayed payment of GFF Elite League prizes
