President checks Region Three’s readiness for rainy season

President Ramotar explained that the visit was to ensure that the outfall and drainage channels and

structures in Stanleytown and Canal Number Two on West Bank Demerara and the Boerasirie Conservancy and Windsor Forest on West Coast Demerara.

National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) Chief Executive Officer Lionel Wordsworth, who accompanied the president, stated that several interventions have been made in preparation for the rainy

pumps are in working order. “The rainy season is always a hectic time for us in Guyana,” he said, noting that during this period, the government usually, closely monitors various communities, especially those prone to flooding to ensure all measures are taken to mitigate the effects of the rainfall.

CIOG welcomes top Islamic official to Guyana

T

he Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG), on behalf of the local Muslim community has extended a warm welcome to Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) General Secretary Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu to Guyana.

Dr Ihsanoglu’s visit to Guyana is in an effort to reinforce the country’s cooperation under the OIC projects, particularly in the field of economic development.

Guyana became a member of the OIC in 1994.

The CIOG, in collaboration with the government of Guyana, hopes that this visit would strengthen and fostered bilateral relationship between the OIC and Guyana.

Dr Ihsanoglu recently concluded a historic first visit to Suriname to bring that country into the fold of cooperation under the OIC projects, particularly in the field of economic development.

The OIC is one of the world’s largest inter-governmental bodies involved in the promotion of global peace and harmony.

It is a multilateral organisation of 57 countries

from mainly Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The OIC includes many rich nations such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Brunei Darussalam, Gabon, Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) is an organ of the OIC of which Suriname is also a member.

Guyana’s ambassador to the OIC, Dr Odeen Ishmael said the visit of the OIC secretary general to Guyana is of great significance since it will place Guyana in the spotlight of all the member states of the organisation.

s Guyanese reflect on the path to independence, and the ensuing years, one can feel an immense sense of pride that a lot has been accomplished as a people, Human Services and Social Security Minister Jenifer Webster told a gathering at the Region Five flag-raising ceremony on Saturday evening.

“What is significant is our resilience as a people, and the fact that Guyana has stayed the course of progress in spite of econom-

ic and political challenges,” she said.

The event was held in the compound of the Region Five Regional Democratic Council office, Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice, in observance of Guyana’s 47th Independence Anniversary.

Guyana became an independent nation on May 26, 1966.

“It is no secret that the country’s independence was as a result of sacrifice and pains,” she said.

However, most important-

ly, it was the vision of the late former executive presidents Dr Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham to ensure that Guyana gained its Independence.

“As we celebrate another independence anniversary, it is fitting that we commit ourselves, once again and with even greater fortitude to serve our country, and to move forward as a united people,” Minister Webster said.

Guyana’s independence, she said was gained after many struggles, and the independence anniversary is an appropriate one for government to recommit to nation-building, putting the interests of the people first.

She said that, “the Guyana in which we live today is different from the one that was obtained just after independence. We have enhanced our physical landscape and the quality of life of our people has improved,” she said.

Guyana is one of the few economies in the region that continues to record positive growth; however small, while others are facing economic hardships.

Minister Webster further stated that Guyana is still a young independent nation, and hence, has a long road ahead. However, she said that government has been making significant strides in that direction.

She added that strong emphasis has been placed on economic development, empowering the young peo-

ple and women, and addressing social needs, for all Guyanese to capitalise on opportunities.

Minister Webster urged the gathering to pay homage to the many sons and daughters of the soil who fought for Guyana’s independence, honour them and recognise the significance of their struggle.

Region Five has benefited from many of the development measures taken by the administration to improve the lives of all Guyanese. This year, a number of capital projects have been undertak-

en in the region such as the construction and rehabilitation of roads, bridges, drainage and irrigation, schools and water supply systems.

“We have come a long way as a young nation.

We have used disappointment as a stepping stone,” said Region Five Chairman Bindrabhan Bisnauth as he urged the gathering, especially the youths, to make full use of the many opportunities afforded to them in order to contribute to their country’s development.

Despite different opinions and allegiances, he

said, that, “we must endeavour to work peacefully and joyfully, knowing that the right thoughts and collective efforts will inevitably bring about positive results.”

Bisnauth said like the Golden Arrowhead that proudly fluttered on Mount Ayangana for the first time on May 26, 1966, so too must Guyanese hope and dream of a great future.

The audience was entertained by cultural presentations in the form of dances, songs, drama, poetry and tassa and African drumming.

Guyana will not neglect ties with traditional partners – Ramotar … as it strengthens relations with Caribbean, Latin American countries

resident Donald Ramotar said while Guyana strengthens its relationship with countries in Central and Latin America, it has no intention to diminish long-standing ties with the countries where traditional relations existed.

Addressing a packed National Park gathering on Saturday during his independence message, Ramotar said, “We aspire to be a responsible member of the international community and remain wholeheartedly committed to the objectives of the Caribbean Community and the eventual realisation of a single market and economy.”

In the past, within the framework of the Union of South American Union (UNASUR), the leaders of South America took a decision some years ago to integrate the infrastructure on the continent.

In putting this decision into practice, both Suriname and Guyana have approached multilateral institutions to undertake a feasibility study for the construction of a bridge across the Corentyne River. The bridge does not only seek to increase people-to-people contact, but will make travel easier while stimulating greater economic activities between the two neighbours.

Presently, Guyana is working with Brazil on infrastructural integration, where a deep water port and a fully paved LindenLethem road, which would permit Guyanese products to be traded into additional and much larger markets, benefiting many industries through higher export volumes. Ramotar

revealed that senior-level teams from both countries are working diligently to accelerate the realisation of the projects.

Meanwhile, over the years, Guyana has also enjoyed better relations with western neighbour Venezuela, where its trade relations have expanded to include improvements on future endeavours.

“Much of the improvement had to do with the visionary leadership of the late President Hugo Chávez and his close colleagues. Chávez was truly a citizen of Latin America and the Caribbean,” said President Ramotar.

However, it is expected that the present development and other future developments will place greater demands on the need to improve local trade facilitation efforts. The president noted that the government of Guyana is moving forward on many fronts to reduce the time and cost associated with trade. One of the measures being pursued is a fully computerised stateof-the-art Single Window Automated Processing

System (SWAPS) – which is expected to bring major improvements and benefits to traders and citizens alike.

It took nearly a decade for UNASUR to finally come into legal force since the integration strategy of creating an institution that would cater to achieve overall development of the continent rather than simple economic integration was first mooted by Brazil during the first South American Summit at Brasilia in August 2000. It was during the third Summit of Heads of State in Brasilia on May 23, 2008 that the South American nations signed the Constitutive Treaty to constitute UNASUR as “an entity with international juridical character”.

The South American region has been experiencing various local as well as transnational security challenges including illegal drug traf-

ficking, increased crime rates, illegal firearms, extreme levels of social inequality and poverty.

It is in order to develop a cooperative mechanism for resolving these challenges, UNASUR was created. The UNASUR is a regional organisation formed by 12 South American states that are united by shared history, religion, common culture and language. Over the years, UNASUR has had some significant achievements to its credit: limiting defence expenditure, reducing crime, promoting democratic institutions, integrating energy and financial systems, handling constitutional crises in Ecuador and Paraguay, and settling dispute between Venezuela and Colombia.

BRICS and Africa

T

he announcement that the president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, has cancelled US$900 million of her country’s debt to Africa was one of the most important events at the 50th anniversary of the African Union being held at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Among the general backslapping and photo ops that usually dominate such occasions, the gesture brought home the rising importance of Brazil and the other members of BRICS (Russia, India, China and South Africa) to the future of the long-troubled continent.

It is quite possible that the summit of BRICS, which was held just two months ago in South Africa, would have achieved more to “realise the dream of the founding fathers for a peaceful, prosperous, and united Africa” than all the speeches made by the 70-odd leaders during the last weekend. The grouping of the most powerful array of developing countries had originally been launched as BRIC: China, the assembly line of the world; India, the world’s back-office; Russia, the energy behemoth; and Brazil, the biofuel and large-scale agriculture provider. These countries were driving the new global agenda, but they soon insisted that South Africa join the club even though that country was smaller by every conceivable measure.

Undoubtedly, all of the aforementioned countries had long rallied to the cause of South Africa during its long struggle against apartheid, and as such, had a long and friendly relationship with it. But international relations and alliances are not usually driven just by sentiments. In this case, BRICS wanted an organised gateway into Africa and no country could serve that purpose better than South Africa, which was the continent’s largest economy.

BRICS has changed perceptions about the drivers of the world economy. A decade ago, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) was ascendant. Today, BRICS represent a competing centre of world power, giving increased negotiating clout to the members and changing the dialogue around world decisions.

Much of the raw materials to fuel the BRIC developmental avalanche that was sweeping over the entire globe were being sourced from Africa.

There had been some criticism of that development

by Western powers as representing a “new scramble for Africa”. The inclusion of South Africa at their table serves to blunt such accusations. Not that South Africa is playing a token role. At the BRIC summit last March, there was an agreement for a BRIC Development Bank with an initial capitalisation of at least US$50 billion. South Africa has already staked out a very powerful case for the bank to be located within its borders, as it has a very sophisticated financial system.

But BRICS has also seen the strategic importance of Africa in global development for the rest of the century. Africa is very sparsely settled and the amount of land available for agriculture is staggering. Not only Africa, but the rest of the world can be fed if those lands could be brought under cultivation. BRICS, as an organisation is in a unique position, to make that dream into a reality. As President Rousseff noted, Brazil, for instance, has the technical knowhow to adapt most temperate zone crops to grow in African conditions.

Just as important, BRICS can provide the market for Africa’s exports, as well as vice versa. Africa has had the second highest rate of economic growth as a region for the last decade and with its soon-to-be billion population having the largest percentage of the under-15 cohort in the world, it is poised to maintain its growth rate even if the non-African members of BRICS falter.

While our country is a much smaller proposition than Africa, we have a similar stunted development profile caused by the People’s National Congress (PNC). It is unfortunate that the opposition appears opposed to the participation of BRICS member China is our development drive.

The GEA polygraph fiasco Dear Editor, Let us go on this polygraph thing. In the U.S. in 2007, a 15-year-old female took a polygraph test about her stepfather molesting her. She passed. However, he also passed as all his denials were recorded as statements of veracity. I need not get into the science, but suffice it to declare that people can beat any polygraph test.

Also, people’s reactions to the same situations are not identical, nor at times, can they even be generalised.

In mid October 2012, we had another case of this polygraph phenomenon. During an armed robbery trial, the attorney for the defence mentioned in

cross-examination that his client had offered to take a polygraph test. It did not go through, as even if a polygraph test had been administered, under Alabama law, the results would not have been admissible in court unless both sides previously had agreed to it. People know better than to fall for this nonsense. At best, the polygraph is an investigative tool and it is often used when an investigator is trying to narrow down a field of suspects.

Scientific knowledge has debunked the assumption that lying can be detected by examining changes in bodily activity. Actually, there is no error-free way of detecting

deception. Polygraph tests in particular should not be ascribed special status.

Polygraph tests work basically by measuring changes in bodily activities such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and palmsweating. Three out of the four most popular lie detection procedures assume that while answering so-called relevant questions, liars will be more aroused than while answering so-called control questions. This is too flimsy to go on.

Also, this premise is somewhat naïve, as truth tellers may also become more aroused when answering the relevant questions, particularly when these rel-

evant questions are emotion evoking, for example, as when an innocent man, questioned about murdering his beloved wife, might experience strong feelings about her. An innocent examinee can also become more aroused due to fear, which may occur, for example, when the person is afraid that his or her honest answers will not be believed.

I ask that we should be bold and honest and quit the polygraph testing policy at the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA). We need good investigators – we really do!

Maternal care must never be compromised Dear Editor, It is very alarming that a young woman from West Coast Berbice died recently at a city hospital after giving birth, via Caesarean section, to a healthy baby boy.

This kind of thing in this day and age must be thoroughly investigated – a Caesarean section should be quite routine.

What went wrong? Or should I say, who went wrong? I have to assume that there were a few anomalies.

Maternal care must never be compromised.

Look at two past incidents that rang terribly sour in our country.

First, a Number 70 Village, Corentyne wom-

an died at a hospital in Berbice just after giving birth – this was in December 2011; and another woman died after a Caesarean section at a hospital, also in Berbice – this was in September 2010.

I recall quite a few others too, but these two suffice.

I believe that people do not just die… there are reasons that must be brought to the fore and a proper independent coroner’s report is necessary.

We need assurance that there was sufficiency of medical expertise and equipment.

Importance of More police reporting crimes embarrassment Dear Editor, This is food for the enemies of the state. The embarrassment is almost unparalleled in recent times.

The man charged with murdering Corporal Romein Cleto was freed based on advice from the director of public prosecutions (DPP).

It appears as though the police wanted a man, so they made up one. Thank God for a good judicial system in Guyana. Quite the opposite where the investigators are concerned. The entire fiasco smacks of incompetence and arrogance.

The DPP showed how

terribly wrong were the police officers. There are thousands of unsolved murders.

We do not like this, but it is a reality. Now, if and when another arrest is made, there will be a lot of scoffing.

Call for better customer service at local banks Dear Editor, When a crime occurs and bystanders are around, we all hope for intervention from the police. Yet, many are the times when no one actually witnesses, calls the police, or offers to help. Bystanders do not report crimes they witness out of fear or other reasons, maybe selfish ones. This kind of mentality actually backfired in Trinidad and Tobago when a handyman was shot dead after witnessing the gang-rape of his neighbour.

This man could have called the police – I did not expect him to intervene.

Then the criminals left the woman alive and killed only the witness – maybe it did not strike them that now they have been seen by the victim as well as the witness. The fact though is that in fighting crimes, participation from citizens is needed.

Witnesses of crimes may be deemed immoral or uncaring and insensitive, but never illegal – they do not break the law as such. I cannot remember reading or hearing of someone being charged for failing to act when these things are unfolding. Yet we complain and get upset when we are not supported when the mis-

fortune falls on us.

We have to wake up.

Even if friends and relatives collude with their silence, most times we know who the criminal elements are and we are also aware of what they did and are doing. Yet, we take a passive and selfish attitude.

In the city, all the pickpocket criminals are known.

We know who are in the stolen phone racket, as well as those who steal and sell car mirrors. We can start there and get the police to destroy these rings.

Should UG hike tuition fees?

Dear Editor, Put at the cheapest, the University of West Indies (UWI), any campus, charges close to $1.5 million to complete a master’s degree. It is not the thesis masters, but a full completion of requisite courses.

The programme can last up to two years online.

This is really a lot of money. I also believe that education is the poor man’s bread and salvation. We cannot compromise where education is concerned.

It can be costly, but it eventually pays off.

The word now is that fees at the UWI Mona Campus in Jamaica will increase 5.5 per cent. According to a Trinidad Express report, fees at the St Augustine and Cave Hill campuses in Trinidad and Barbados respectively, will remain the same. The council held its annual business meeting in the new UWI Regional Headquarters building in Mona, Jamaica, and en-

dorsed the recommendations of the Sub-Committee on Tuition Fees with respect to fees for 2013-2014 academic programmes.

University of Guyana, therefore, must make some changes. Even if the fees for local students are n o t raised,

then for foreign- ers, they must. If we were not offering quality education, then we would not have had foreign students. However, I do think that there must be an upgrade at UG. There are noticeable trends of decadence and these are at both the infrastructural and intellectual levels.

I also support a call for

staff development, especially lecturers. Since teaching and research are the main thrusts of any academic institution of higher learning, this kind of investment must not be compromised.

Government should facilitate lecturers’ pursuit of post-graduate studies, especially when these career lecturers can access online or distance education programmes of outstanding recognition.

In time to come, many postgraduate programmes will get full facilitat i o n right here – maybe in five years time.

This will allow present lecturers to teach and study as they will still be domiciled here while studying. I say, let us go for a full-blown turnaround, and deal with the teething problems as they arise.

Dear Editor, Recently, I went to several ATM machines and none of them was working.

Apparently, this was happening for quite a spell and it kept being that way too.

Many people got disgusted.

The bank could have dispensed a public advisory. If people know the bad news, it is better than having to be inconvenienced with it by self-discovery.

A good thing to do, is to put up a placard in front of the ATMs. People struggle to find a parking spot, and then they run into a neon note telling them that the machine is out of order.

The next thing about local banks is that on too many occasions, there is no receipt. This must be looked at. People want to know where they stand as regards availability of funds. It can be embarrassing if there is nothing left, or just a little bit, and this person makes a purchase,

uses his card, and then it keeps getting rejected at the place of purchase.

There is also the need for late banking hours too – at least one day per week.

How would the local banks feel if every month-end employees have to be given an afternoon off, for them to go to do a necessary piece of business. This is how many employees are being affected. I went to the University of Guyana, just a while back, and I could not expedite my matter, and all because the employee went to do a piece of banking business.

Now switching to what went on at another local bank really buttresses my point about the utter clumsiness and insensitivity of what is taking place at our banks here in Guyana.

There was an agonising delay in accessing salary payment and one person declared that her salary went into the bank and

three days later, it was not cleared.

Again it comes back to poor quality service to customers, as this seems to have become the norm in Guyana. What is funny is that the public seems to never know what is happening beforehand. Also, the explanations for these foibles are so dubious. It is time that something is done as regards basic customer service at our banks and a more sympathetic attitude from the offenders.

Parental roles: How to set healthy boundaries with your child – Part One

eople talk a lot about the need for “boundaries”, but what does this word really mean? As a parent, you can think of a boundary as the line you draw around yourself to define where you end and where your child begins.

This isn’t always easy. And let’s face it, children push the boundaries every day, all the time. They are wired to test us and see how far they can go; it’s in their nature. As parents, we sometimes cross boundaries ourselves in our attempts to fix things for them. Understand that one of our most important jobs as parents is to stay loving and separate from our children. We do this by clearly defining our principles, staying in our role as a parent, and sticking to our bottom lines.

How do you know if your child is pushing boundaries?

Here are some examples: Your 13-year-old walks into your room without knocking on the door and doesn’t respect your privacy.

Your 10-year-old interrupts your conversations with other adults without saying “excuse me” or waiting politely for a chance to get your attention.

Your teen tells you how to run your life after your divorce.

Your young child tells you what to do and throws tantrums if you don’t do what she says.

I’m not saying that we should never help, guide, coach and teach our children; of course we should – that’s a huge part of what it means to be a parent. What I’m saying is that we need to let them try to fight their own battles when possible and appropriate, rather than taking on their battles for them.

Letting your child work through things is a way to respect them by observing their boundaries – and your own.

How do you know if you might be blurring boundaries as a parent? Here are some signs: Doing for your child what he can (or should) do for himself.

Constantly asking questions; interrogating your child over everything.

Letting your child invade your boundaries as a couple – making your children the centre focus at all times.

Oversharing with your child about your life; treating them like a friend rather than your child.

Giving up your parental authority and allowing your child to take control of the household.

Living through your child vicariously; feeling as if their achievements are yours, and their failures are yours as well.

How to prevent learned helplessness in young children

achel has just arrived at her child’s daycare after a stressful day of work. Her five-year-old daughter Kyla immediately begins whining, “I can’t find my coat! Can you go get it for me?” Stressed, tired, and trying to avoid a meltdown in front of the other parents and teachers, Rachel rushes from room to room looking for it. When she finally hands Kyla the jacket, her daughter screams, “You carry it for me!” Rachel complies, all the while stuffing Kyla’s things into her backpack for her. “Are we ready to go?” Rachel asks with a sigh, only to hear, “Yes, but you forgot my lunchbox. It’s in the cubby.”

With Kyla’s coat under her arm and her backpack over her shoulder, Rachel tucks the lunchbox under her chin, wondering how she became her child’s pack mule.

Before you do any task for your child, stop and ask yourself: “Can my child be doing this right now instead of me?” You will most likely find that the answer is a resounding yes!

If this scenario sounds familiar, consider asking yourself these questions: Am I doing too much (or over-functioning) for my

young child? Am I unintentionally teaching her how to be helpless?

How it begins

In this non-stop world of work, child-rearing, marriage and relationships, it’s easy for parents to move at breakneck speed without stopping to really think about what it is we are doing – or why we are doing it. So much of our lives now seems to move on auto-pilot: Wake up, get children fed and off to school, go to work, (either at our jobs or within our homes), get the children after school, go to the many activities they are involved in, make dinner, do homework, then prepare for bedtime. The next day we wake up and do it all over again. While this is just the reality for parents, the downside is that we often do not take a moment to reflect on what each member of the family’s role is within this cycle of work, life, and home.

As a result, many times parents find themselves in the habit of doing the same things over and over without thinking about what our children can and should do – and this can mean doing too much (over-functioning) while our children do too little.

How do you know if you’re doing too much for your child?

The warning signs are there; we just don’t always see them. Below are some points to reflect on in order to see if you’re overworking yourself, while simultaneously (and unwittingly) letting your child off the hook too often.

Is your child overly demanding?

Oftentimes when a parent is doing too much for their child, they wind up with an overlydemanding, whiny child.

Yes, all children are demanding and whiny to a degree, but if you find that your child is constantly asking you for things and you are rushing to do them, you are probably over-functioning for him.

Understand that he does this because he knows you will help him find the answer – and he won’t have to make the effort himself.

Remember that your child is often perfectly capable of answering many of the questions they ask you. It may just take a little effort on their part and less input on yours. (Excerpt from empoweringparents.com)

Differences should not be a hindrance to development – Nandlall urges

ttorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall has urged Guyanese to use the occasion of independence to reflect and recognise certain truths of their birthright.

He made this call as Guyana’s 47th Independence Anniversary was being observed across the 10 administrative regions with the traditional annual flag-raising ceremonies at the various locations.

He was at the time speaking at the Region Three Regional Democratic Council compound at Vreed-en-Hoop where a formal programme was organised to celebrate the occasion. The programme included presentations of songs, dances, drumming and folk pieces representing the ethnic diversity of

try by their own people, and Guyanese were denied that freedom that they were supposed to enjoy in 1966 and 1970.

Minister Nandlall traced Guyana’s path and purpose towards a free and independent country. He emphasised to the gathering that there was every reason to celebrate, and urged them to reflect on their birthright, “irrespective of our differences and cultures”.

The minister stated that these latter facts must be made secondary to Guyana’s interest, and urged that it be done dispassionately “as we set our differences aside”.

As he reflected on Guyana’s progress, Minister Nandlall explained that even though independence was gained in 1966, Guyana was still subject to colonial rule and guidance through a British governor general.

It was only in 1970 with the

gaining of Republican status that Guyana became truly free of its colonial masters, and it was from there that the road of an independent nation began with the first national elections of 1973.

Unfortunately, the attorney general explained, those elections and the ones that followed were all rigged as evidence has shown. “Rigging of an election means that that freedom which we fought for since the days of slavery and indentureship… when we won independence… when we won Republican status, that freedom was taken from us by our own people in 1973,” he stated.

Minister Nandlall explained that this meant that Guyanese were kept in subjugation in their own coun-

“We must reflect on our past… we must not shy away from it on occasions like this,” he said, explaining that this is needed if Guyanese wanted what is best for their children.

The reason for this, he pointed out, is to ensure that those things never happen again in Guyana, “because it comes with consequences which are harmful to all of us… because when you deny a people their freedom, you take away from the human being the initiative, the entrepreneurship; the ability that he has to exercise his

mind and to excel.”

Minister Nandlall pointed out that economic stagnation was caused by this denial which was imposed on Guyana from 1970 to 1992, and it also exists in countries where citizens are denied this freedom.

He emphasised the transformation of Guyanese lives since democracy and freedom were restored to Guyana, and urged citizens to look at the simple basic changes that have occurred in their lives and communities over the past 20 years.

Basic changes such as the size of their homes and the amenities available to them; a television in each home; more owners of vehicles and more available social services and a telephone in each home; these simple things

would show how freedom has worked for Guyanese.

“On occasions like this we must reflect on these things, to ensure that we use our own minds and make conscious and right decisions,” Minister Nandlall urged.

He further explained that the mantle has to be passed to the children of today, and so a good country has to be prepared for them. “We have gained a lot… from bankruptcy… to a country of economic viability… we enjoy the fastest and highest growth rate in the entire Caribbean.”

Describing the poor state of several economies around the Caribbean, Minister Nandlall lauded the fact that Guyana enjoyed a constant economic growth of five per cent per annum over the past seven years.

Guyana has made significant progress since independence – Minister Whittaker

egion Seven residents joined the rest of the country on Saturday evening in celebrating Guyana’s 47th Independence Anniversary.

The regional celebration was attended by junior Local Government and Regional Development Minister Norman Whittaker, who, in his address, saluted those persons who have made significant contributions towards Guyana achieving independence.

In expressing his pleasure in ushering in Guyana’s 47th independence anniversary, Minister Whittaker praised the work of late presidents Forbes Burnham and Cheddi Jagan in leading the fight in this regard.

“Independence means developing certain skills, acquiring certain knowledge, acquiring the resources, the experiences that will enable us to move forward with as little intervention as possible… when you talk independence you are talking about people who are knowledgeable and educated enough to stand on their own feet, and be able to channel the path forward,” he said.

Minister Whittaker also saluted the miners who have been making contributions towards Guyana’s economy.

However, he cautioned them not to solely depend on mining since there are adverse risks and fluctuation in the price of gold. Currently, gold prices have dropped significantly.

“The records would show that over 400,000 ounces of gold resulted in significant earning of royalties which made possible, even further development,” the minister highlighted.

He acknowledged that Guyana has been doing better since it gained inde-

pendence, and this is not without difficulties and challenges, and periods where the country seemed to be stagnated and divided.

Nevertheless, Guyana enjoys the respect of many other countries because it is an example of a progressive nation.

“We are no longer a nation of beggars… our education system is about the best in the Caribbean. Our healthcare has improved tremendously, and we still remain the bread basket of the Caribbean, notwith-

standing the challenges that we have been facing… I am proud of the progress that we have made,” the minister said.

He noted that Region Seven has also been a part of the progress made in Guyana, and while there is still a long way to go, the Cabinet has determined that tremendous emphasis must be placed on infrastructural development in the region. This is reflected in increases in the budget allocations for the social sectors in Region Seven.

Minister Whittaker emphasised that President Donald Ramotar has called for more attention to be placed on roads, drainage, and on garbage collection in the region.

Regional Chairman Gordon Bradford told the residents of the developmental projects that will be carried out this year which include extension to the Bartica hospital, construction of a new school in Kako, repairs to the regional guest house and regatta pavilion and a hostel in Upper Mazaruni.

He called on the residents to monitor these works so that they can get value for the money being invested.

Third body recovered after Cuyuni boat mishap – MARAD launches investigation

hree days after the Black Angel capsized in the Cuyuni River en route to Bartica, leaving four persons dead; a third

body was on Monday morning recovered in the vicinity of the Matouk Falls, Cuyuni, where the accident reportedly occurred.

The body of Clive Welcome, 19, also called “Basil” or “Bazzo” of First Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven was fished out about 9:15h by a search party comprising the Maritime Administration (MARAD), the Guyana Defence Force and relatives.

The bodies of William Patoir of New Amsterdam, Berbice and Junior Bandoo, 35, of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo were discovered on Sunday about 16:00h. The body of Shawn Robinson of New Amsterdam Berbice is yet to be found. The man believed to be the captin of the vessel, Junior Lyte, remains in police custody.

Severn Williams, a brother of the teenager on Monday told Guyana Times that his brother’s body was severely damaged and was taken to the Lyken’s Funeral home, awaiting post-mortem.

He said his brother who worked in the Cuyuni for some time was on his way out of the area when tragedy struck.

Williams, who is also the owner of the boat, stated that his brother was not the vice captain of the vessel when it capsized. The aggrieved brother explained that upon

receiving the news of the tragedy, he immediately went into the area to search for the men, but it was until Sunday evening they recovered Patoir and Bandoo.

After spending hours on the water top, he disclosed that the search was halted on Sunday evening but recommenced on Monday. Within minutes after arriving in the area, they found his brother’s body among the rapids in the vicinity of the Matouk Falls.

Welcome is survived by his parents and five brothers.

However, relatives of Bandoo explained that from reports they received, the boat in which the men were travelling came into contact with the rocks and the engines failed, but due to the rough water, the vessel subsequently capsized among the rapids. Bandoo is survived by his reputed wife and his two daughters.

Guyana Times understands that Lyte was severely critcised since it is believed

that he was not qualified to drive the boat, especially in the area the accident occurred. His competence was also questioned by MARAD.

Investigation

MARAD officials are also investigating the accusation that not all of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident.

Those who were equipped with life jackets were the ones who were saved.

Attempts to solicit a comment from Captain Stephen Thomas of MARAD proved futile, but this publication understands that he was part of the recovery team that went into the area.

Recently, there have been concerns of miners risking their lives by not wearing life jackets.

In light of the accident, MARAD has launched an investigation to determine whether the rules and regulations pertaining to speed

boat operations have been adhered to.

In January, 10 persons perished when the boat they were travelling in collided with another at Crab Falls, Mazaruni River, Region Seven.

According to reports, the two boats were travelling in the opposite direction just below Crab Falls, 25 miles upstream from Bartica when the accident occurred.

All of the passengers onboard the two vessels were tossed into the deep waters.

The boat was travelling out of Puruni and had 12 passengers, 10 of whom were discovered dead. The boat was propelled by a 200-horsepower outboard engine and was reportedly split in two.

Those who perished in the boat collision were Deon Moses, Kevon Ambrose, Olivera Alves, Christopher Ramnarain, Zahir Baksh, Jewan Seeram, Ulrick Grimes, Jermaine Calistro, Ricky Bobb and Kenau Amsterdam.

Those who survived were Aubrey Bowen, Donita Daniels, Devon Thomas, Juliet Webber and Francisca Helena. The two boat captains were later charged with manslaughter and released on $1 million bail each.

In December 2012, six persons met their demise after two passenger boats collided in the middle of the Pomeroon River. The boats collided in the vicinity of Siriki, Upper Pomeroon River.

Moving the goalposts

...in procurement ow we’ve finished “celebrating” independence by jumping through the hoops established by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), we come to the not unrelated matter of the Public Procurement Commission.

Obviously, we think that the idea of such a commission is a good one: who would complain about a “watchdog” to ensure that we’re getting the bang for our public buck? After all, the money comes out of our pockets, no?

But we’ve found to our cost (very high cost) that in these things, the devil is in the details. One of these details just surfaced in a letter from long-time People’s National Congress (PNC) activist and University of Guyana (UG) lecturer – who the opposition appointed as their representative on the Broadcast Commission – Sherwood Lowe.

Seems that Lowe – who undoubtedly represents the view of the opposition A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) and Alliance For Change (AFC), since they placed so much confidence in him – doesn’t believe that the test of who will be awarded contracts by the procurement commission should be who’s most qualified. You know...like who can best do the job most competently at the cheapest price. No siree Bob!!! Such a commission would be a “paper tiger”.

Lowe and the opposition believe that we should employ a new criterion to create, presumably a “real” tiger. The procurement commission must “include socioeconomicrebalancing in the interest of all groups and communities”.

You heard that right: the members of the procurement commission will now be using their own judgement to award contracts “in the interests of all groups and communities”.

Now while this may sound like “affirmative action” like they have in the U.S., we don’t have laws on our books to say who’s a minority or disadvantaged group and so on. So I guess we’ll be winging it on the basis of how the procurement commission members “feel”. From the strident utterances of Khemraj Ramjattan, David Granger, et al, at Linden and elsewhere, we know who they think should be helped. If one community can get electricity practically free while the rest of the country reels under costs double that of New York City, imagine the contracts they’ll be getting to make things “regulah”.

We’ve already tried this nonsense during the Forbes Burnham years...and that “real tiger” helped to destroy this country, where the only economies we can be compared with today is sub-Saharan Africa and Haiti. Even in America, with all their good intentions, it hasn’t helped the targeted communities – only fostered a dependency on government handouts. Is this what we want in Guyana after 47 years of “independence”? Gimme a break!!!

...on Caricom There’s been a vigorous debate precipitated in the Caribbean’s “chattering class” over the sentiments expressed by a Jamaican lawyer Ronald Mason for Jamaica to exit the Caribbean Community (Caricom). What seemed to upset most folks was not that Mason criticised Caricom, but that he denied that he was any kind of “Caribbean Man”. He was “a Jamaican” he declared jingoistically.

Now we’re not so sure why anyone is upset with Mason, who is an immigration lawyer and so must’ve had some experience with this “Caribbean one love” ideal versus the reality. After all, most people have completely forgotten that founding fathers of Caricom, like William Demas, have poignantly spoken about the cultural ties that bound us together as “one people”. We’ve forgotten because nobody talks about it and no one talks about it because hardly anyone sees it as a reality.

Ask every Bajan or Trini and he or she will also proudly assert their national identity...even the small islanders, rather than any Caribbean identification. It’s probably only Guyanese who talk about “Caribbean identity” as our youths imitate unintelligible Jamaican patois in their dancehall jive and ditto the Trini-lilted Chutney rum songs. So it go. ...on corruption What’s this about focusing on the businessmen who New York state Senator John Sampson “shook down” for “retainer fees”? Who’s the “corrupter” and who’s the “corruptee”??

Berbice can become major tourism Michael “Mike” James brings comedy and originality to the local stage destination – GTA director

ead of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Indranauth Haralsingh said the agency is willing to explore the potential of promoting tourism in Berbice by working along with the private sector, in an exclusive interview with Guyana Times.

Haralsingh is encouraging corporate businesses to invest in the development of the Number 63 Beach.

However, he said government must play its part if the business sector is to make an impact in the further development on the facility, and by extension, make Berbice a major tourism destination.

“There are numerous opportunities for the private sector to invest, but we do not have things like fresh water.

While this is an opportunity for private investment, it is also an area where the regional administration could look into. I once spoke with the regional chairman for him to see if he can get the Ministry of Public Works to see if they could improve the access to the beach in terms of the Number 63 and 60 entrances.”

He said the Number 63 Beach was only one of several opportunities for investment in the tourism industry in Berbice. “Berbice has a number of famous people from Cheddi Jagan to Edgar

Mettelholzser and so many famous cricketers along with a number of other people.

Bird watching is also possible. Berbice is famous for a few water falls.”

Indranauth noted that there are also tremendous opportunities for fishing in Berbice, which is referred to as the Ancient County. One of the unexplored areas of opportunity is that of site trips to famous places and the homes of famous people in Berbice.

“Cuffy came from Berbice and this year we are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the slave rebellion which was led by Cuffy. A few days ago, we celebrated the 175th anniversary on the arrival of the first East Indian immigrants to Guyana and Highbury stands out; it is the first place where they

set foot on the shores of the then British Guiana. It is a very historic place. People will love to go on tours. You could actually take people on a pilgrimage.”

Indranauth said there is also great scope for agrotourism in Berbice, noting that Berbice is home to the four top sugar estates in the country. He also noted that rice and cash crops have great potential for tourism in the region. There is also a wide scope for river trips at places like Fort Nassau, while certain villages could be places of interest to visit.

“The Berbice Bridge is the sixth longest floating bridge in the world and many people will like to come and cross the bridge and take photographs of themselves on the bridge. There is also a rich culture in Berbice… so Berbice has potential and there are many opportunities for entrepreneurs. Sadly though, Berbice only has one tour operator.” That tour operator only provides trips to the Upper Corentyne, Indranauth noted.

He said GTA can work to help develop capacity, but it needs to work with entrepreneurs who see the opportunity. These opportunities are great since more that 70 per cent of persons who arrive at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport are going to Berbice.

Some 3000 laptops distributed in Region Four this month

he government of Guyana continues on it quest to equip every household with a laptop through its One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) programme, and since the exercise restarted on May 21, the OLPF Secretariat has distributed close to 3000 laptops to beneficiaries in Region Four.

On Saturday, 1391 laptops were distributed to families in various communities including Chapman to Grove, East Coast Demerara, and Diamond to Craig, Good Success to Coverden, and Samatha Point to Caneville, all on the East Bank and several city areas such as Campbellville, Lodge, Kingston, Cummingsburg, Tucville, Guyhoc, Subryanville, Meadow Brook Gardens and Alberttown.

Recipients from Chapman to Grove received 276 laptops, while at the Woolford Avenue distribution centre, 136 benefited. A total of 204 were distributed in Lodge, 121 in Section K Campbellville and the largest number of 654 to recipients spanning from Diamond to Craig.

Prior to this current distribution phase, 28,000 laptops were already given out to numerous families in various communities countrywide.

get 6000 recipients of the East Coast, East Bank and Georgetown areas.

Human Services and Social Security Minister Jenifer Webster, who was present at some of these venues, expressed her joy at witnessing the success of the programme and more importantly, the positive impact it has had on the recipients.

The minister urged the recipients to take full advantage of the training that is being provided to them and to care for the laptops.

Beneficiaries of the programme expressed gratitude for the device and for the training provided to ensure they are proficient in its use.

One resident of Campbellville Shirley David said that this programme will benefit her in a great

way because she has no knowledge of computers or ICT and has two small children, and through this programme, she can gain the basic training which can then be passed on to her children.

The distribution exercise continues on May 28 in other locations such as Victoria to Haslington, Enterprise to Paradise, Lusignan to Good Hope and several other city areas.

The OLPF programme was pioneered by former President Bharrat Jagdeo and launched in 2011. The original aim of this programme is to equip 90,000 families with laptops and to expand the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) across the country.

he name Michael or “Mike” James, as he is often called by many, is slowly etching its way on the international scene.

James has already made his mark on local film making, poetry, music and song writing, drama and theatrical productions, and has become a household name on the lips of many Lindeners and people in other parts of the country and abroad, especially those who have a fetish for some hearty, bottom-of-the belly felt laughter, while at the same time grasping true life lessons.

Those who are familiar with local movies such as “Coal Pot Saga” and “Ole House Pun Ole House” will know that this song writer/poet/director/playwright is truly ahead of his game when it comes to mastering his craft.

For those who may not know him or may not be familiar with his work, this multi-talented son of the soil was born on December 12, 1972 at a home in Buxton, East Coast of Demerara, but his parents migrated to the bauxite mining community of Linden in 1976 when he was just four years old.

James attended the Mount Caramel Nursery School, followed by the Christianburg Primary School and the Mackenzie High School, where he soon developed a strong passion for writing and the creative arts.

Creative ideas

“I am always intrigued by creative ideas and telling interesting stories either through poetry, songs, films or theatre productions. I believe that laughter is the best medicine, so I try to tell powerful stories through funny story lines,” he said in an interview with Guyana Times.

James paid homage to his wonderful upbringing, saying he grew up in a wonderful home with a loving family. “Life growing up for me was good. I was blessed with two wonderful parents.

I have five brothers and four sisters. My dad has passed away but my mom is alive and well,” he said.

“I started writing plays at my church, Bethel Tabernacle, in February of 1995. I believe that my purpose on earth is to entertain God’s people and, in so doing, bring hope to people’s lives,” he added.

All this creative mind needs is a paper and a pen or pencil and he can produce an outstanding original production.

James has written numerous songs for young upcoming artistes in and out of the community such as George Anthony “Chiney” Abrams and Diana Chapman. The soca song “Wine Attack”, which placed second in the Carib Soca Monarch competition last year, was produced and written by James.

He also wrote and produced the song “Pose” for Abrams,

Gospel music

James has written song entries for the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Company Jingle and Song Competition, musician Brian Clarke of Canada, Selah Muzik of Atlanta Georgia, the national junior and senior calypso competitions; the Linden Town Week theme song, various youth conventions, and numerous artistes in Guyana. He has also worked with the Berbice Multilateral School. “I write all genres of music, but I enjoy writing gospel music the most,” he pointed out.

An easy going enthusiast, James has made meaningful contributions to the local film industry and has also produced material for Cine Guyana. “I wrote a short dramatic piece for a youth convention in 1998 and it had the audience rocking with laughter,” he said.

Like many writers, when asked what makes him write, James said he draws his inspiration from different people, places and things.

One of his most recent poetic productions, “Me The Child Mother”, written in creolise, was performed by Miss Linden Town Week pageant delegate Kimberly Elexy earlier this month. She copped the Best Talent prize for the piece.

“Well the fact that I do multiple writing, I would have to say that my inspiration comes mostly from the people around me, the culture of the Guyanese people, and the will to make a positive change in someone else’s life,” he said.

Other plays and movies that he has written are, “To Forgive and Forget”, “Dutty Bundle”, “Family Matters”, “Tit for Tat”, and “Tantimerl and She Junky”. James began making independent films in 2000, and, lately, he made two new professional short films, including “Three Cards and Choices”.

He noted, however, that “The Coal Pot Saga” is his favourite project and highlighted the joys and difficulties he encountered while working on it. “The fact that ‘Coal Pot Saga’ was my first movie production made the experience and challenges unique, and for that reason, I will call that my favourite film production,” he said.

“We had no sponsorship

towards the production, so being economically creative, was the order of the day,” said James. “I can remember shooting with a camcorder, doing the lighting myself, using used cassettes over and over to record, also the house that the film was shot was burnt one month after the production, so the only image and memory of the home was on our film production. That in itself was a blessing to the family that used to live there, as everything was lost in the fire.”

On March 2 of this year, “Pleasing Mrs Jones”, a stage play written and directed by James was featured at the Linden Concert Hall and School (LICHAS) Building and received much support by the local audience. A hilarious comedy, it told the story of the main character, Jones, a woman who was so self-centred and insensitive that she viciously ignored the feelings and wishes of her loved ones.

She paid dearly for her attitude and ultimately lost everything, until she realised that family comes first, and should be treasured and not trampled upon.

“Pleasing Mrs Jones” is also expected to be featured at the National Culture Centre on June 22 and 23.

'Sky is the limit'

A man who believes that the sky is the limit, James is currently working on having his work featured in as many parts of the world as possible, since he noted that Guyanese entertainment is lacking on the international scene.

“I’m at the stage of taking my productions to Georgetown, thanks to Top Cat Promotions, and as for my new film, I’m working on producing a feature film entitled ‘The Bread Winner’.”

James is advising young writers and those aspiring to believe in themselves, to never lose focus, and to persevere despite all odds.”Write, write and don’t stop writing.

Victim of Orange Walk shooting succumbs S Freddie lookin fuh attention

hawn Nelson, 39, called “Red Man” of 63-64 D’Urban Street, Lodge, Georgetown, who was shot to his head on Sunday morning in the vicinity of Sweet Point, Orange Walk, Georgetown, succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning.

An official at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) confirmed that the man took his last breath about 8:25h on Sunday.

The official said Nelson’s relatives were cognisant of the fact that there was little hope in saving his life.

She also noted that the fragments that were left in the man’s head made the case even more technical, but doctors tried desperately to save him. Nelson’s head was swollen extensively, but relatives remained hopeful that he might have pulled through.

However, the suspect whose name was given as Carlyle Boston, a cricketer attached to the Demerara Cricket Club remains in police custody and is expected to be slapped with a murder charge.

He reportedly sped

away from the scene after shooting Nelson, but later turned himself in after seeking advice from his attorney.

Guyana Times learnt that Boston left the Baroombar on Sunday morning and went to Sweet Point to get a drink where he saw his friend, Nelson.

The two started to make jokes and soon after the shooting occurred.

Upon seeing Boston, Nelson jokingly asked him for a raise, but instead he pulled out a gun, pointed it in Nelson’s direction and told him “this (gun) is the only thing I get”. Within a few seconds, a gunshot was heard and Nelson was seen lying in a pool of blood on the roadway.

The reputed wife of the dead man said that they were contacted on Monday morning by hospital officials who related the horrific news of her husband’s passing. While they were told of the grim chances of him surviving, the woman said it is still hard to come to grips with the death of a loved one.

man’s death has left close family members in a state of disarray, and they are trying to contemplate their next move. The relative bashed the young cricketer for his irresponsible behaviour, claiming that he should have known better.

To date, it is not clear whether the gun used in the incident was legally obtained by Boston. This publication understands that the gun that was used in the shooting incident is

owned by a former cricket, who is now a popular businessman.

The man further stated that since Boston is known to the family, they are not sure what stance to take.

Compensation was reportedly being negotiated by the suspect’s relatives.

On the day of the shooting incident, Nelson had moments before left his D’Urban Street home and was walking to his Robb Street job when Boston saw him and whipped out a gun to “bluff” him. The gun went off and Nelson was shot to his head. A passerby who works at the GPHC summoned an ambulance which rushed the man to the emergency room.

After driving away from the scene, the young man crashed his car a number of times as he panicked on his way home. The car was abandoned in the East Ruimveldt area. The police are continuing their investigations.

The man leaves to mourn his parents, reputed wife and siblings. His body is at the Georgetown Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem.

Heineken party rocks T

he Rohan Khanai Stand at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GGC) was bursting its seams on Saturday evening when ANSA McAL hosted a viewing of the UEFA Champions League followed by an after party featuring soca sensation, Lil Rick.

The party was the first of its kind to be hosted under the Heineken brand in Guyana, but it is being done in other countries around the world since Heineken is the official beer of the champion’s league.

Football lovers turned up in their numbers to witness the grand finals on elevated projector screens in the stands. The event was graced by top officials of the beverage company and several sportsmen and woman, including the Vieiras and Rahamans.

Football fanatics jumped, screamed, popped beers in the air and even on each other after goals were scored.

In addition, there was sweet soca music to compliment the viewing party and an abundance of Heineken beers that were sold as a form of promotion. Troy Cadogan explained that he was a little worried after the rain came down, but his smile reappeared when the sun came out.

A jubilant Cadogan said he hopes the party will grow in years to come, noting that the venue will definitely have to change.

ANSA McAL Public Relations Officer Darshanie Yusuf also shared similar sentiments as Cadogan, stating that she was also a little sceptical when the rain came crashing down, and commended the supporters for tuning out despite the heavy downpours.

She was also elated that her team FC Bayern München won the championship.

Yusuf explained that the scenes were supposed to be placed on the field while patrons view from the stands,

but all arrangements had to be shifted due to the flooded ground. Heineken Marketing Assistance Robert Hiscock was extremely pleased with the support, and said he will begin planning early for next year’s UEFA Champions League.

He said a lot of work was done to make the event a reality and thanked his staff for their assistance.

Policeman arrested after M70 rifle, ammo disappear

policeman who was on duty at Castellani House, Vlissengen Road and Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown was on Sunday evening under close arrest after he could not account for a missing assault rifle and several rounds of ammunition Police in a release said an M70 rifle with 30 rounds that were issued to him for duty at Castellani House on Sunday evening went missing.

Benn joins Monkey Mountain Caribbean advised to review residents in independence educational policies celebrations T

R

esidents of Monkey Mountain, Region Eight turned out in their numbers to usher in Guyana’s 47th anniversary as an independent nation.

The celebration was attended by Public Works Minister Robeson Benn and officials of the ministry and the region.

“Being free and independent meant that we wanted to be responsible for ourselves, to build Guyana for ourselves… with all the difficulties over all of these years, we have managed to do so,” Minister Benn said.

He added that the development of Monkey Mountain, for example, is testimony to the hard work and struggle by Guyanese working on their own behalf.

Minister Benn stressed that regardless of the challenges and differences faced, the intention was to see Guyana grow, especially the hinterland communities.

“It’s only when we would have improved significantly

the lives of our residents of interior communities, when they have almost a similar quality of life as the other Guyanese on the coast, that we would have said that we would have made good of the sacrifices,” he posited.

Minister Benn noted that while there are needs all across Guyana, the money is being spread so as to reach everyone in some way, and these efforts have resulted in more successes than failures.

He told the residents that discussions are ongoing to develop a mechanism whereby residents from the community can be employed with developmental projects. He explained that this measure is being considered since the contractors who are not from the region are not dependable, and they are not always aware of the conditions and the available materials.

It is hoped that this mechanism will bring income for the residents and

garner their participation.

With regards to the road that is being built that leads to Monkey Mountain and connects it to other villages, Minister Benn encouraged the community to pursue farming since with the opening of the road, they will be able to access more markets for their products.

The minister also urged the gathering to protect their indigenous culture and language.

Region Eight Regional Executive Officer (REO) Ronald Harsaywack said Saturday’s event was the first time the flag-raising ceremony was being held in Monkey Mountain, following a decision taken by the regional administration to rotate the celebrations for national events such as Republic Day and independence. The intention is to get more people involved in the celebrations, and at the same time give students an opportunity to learn about Guyana’s history.

So says, Trinidad’s Tertiary Education and Training Minister Fazal Karim, who believes that the region’s traditional method of thinking cannot suffice in a growing information age and technological world.

Karim highlighted the crucial role that education and culture could play in encouraging innovation, and the necessity for a new skill set for competitiveness and development.

During the recent opening ceremony of the 24th meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) that focused on education and culture, Karim noted that Caribbean leaders must pause to address this important issue that is fundamental to the sustainable development of the region composed of small, vulnerable economies.

“The economic woes currently experienced can be linked to a multiplicity of causes and the solutions are no less complicated. What is clear, however, is the increasingly global and complex environment in which we operate.”

Karim pointed out that based on the economic, social and environmental challenges facing the Caribbean, the only sustainable path to development is grounded in the region’s ability to be creative, innovative and competitive in implying commitment to knowledge development.

He stated that a defining feature in the global knowledge economy is the

centrality of Information Communication Technology (ICT) embedded within the education system which has reshaped all aspects of the Caribbean life.

Karim said there is a great awareness of the importance of investment in highly skilled workforce through education and training within this context.

“It is important to note that employers are continually changing and the mere accumulation of skills and knowledge is no longer sufficient as these can become quickly outdated,” the Trinidadian minister said.

Karim stressed that what is more imperative is the ability to adapt, relearn and seek creative solutions and ways of doing things.

This, he said, will determine the value of an employee, emphasising the importance of digital literacy, laptops in schools, vocational education and ICTs. According to Karim, he was heartened at the commitment of University of Trinidad and Tobago to the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) in development of a new curriculum in these areas.

Only last week, Trinidad

signed a contract with the largest software company in the animation industry.

Karim said the region needs a greater focus on entrepreneurship and “what a better way to do this than promoting young animators in the world of entertainment”.

A critical role also exists for the private sector in skill identification and in supporting career development through job fairs in science, technology and the creative arts.

Karim applauded the regional policy on Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLR) which was approved at the recent COHSOD. This policy will be undertaken through industry development and competency standards.

Some 62 standards were approved at the COHSOD meeting.

The tertiary education and training minister related that major assets for a regional economy is not different from what is required around the world which is skilled workers at the technical and managerial levels who are adaptable and creative with good attitudes towards lifelong learning and creativity. This is a precondition for innovation that will lead to the development of new products and services and is a key determinant in the success of schools and businesses.

Among the key components Karim identified in the quest towards competitiveness was a greater focus on entrepreneurship, an examination of the educational and pedagogic techniques to ascertain whether it was relevant in the current digital milieu, and the development of “muscles” within national education systems for creative and innovative thinking.

Essequibo Lions Club donates wheelchair to senior citizen

he members of the Lions Club of Essequibo Coast through their philanthropic efforts continue to uphold its international motto “We Serve” by rendering their assistance wherever possible.

During the course of the organisation’s existence, it has

been giving back to society, this time the team visited 92-yearold Sue John of Lima, Essequibo Coast.

Sue John was suffering with problems in his feet, as a result, he was hospitalised and upon release needed assistance to move around. Family members sought

the assistance of the Lions Club of Essequibo Coast and the club responded immediately by donating a wheelchair to the senior citizen. The president of the club Mohamed Ally informed the family members that the organisation was very pleased to provide the aid. The family members as well as Sue John expressed their appreciation of the club’s assistance and assured that the wheelchair will be well taken care of.

The club which has been in existence for 22 years is currently undertaking several projects in keeping with the Lion’s club World Service Day. One of which is an essay competition under the topic, “Importance of Reading” for the Grade Six students which the club hopes to have it concluded by the first week in June.

Additionally, the group will be scheduling a “Pick-it-up” programme in the Anna Regina area.

The aim of the Caribbean Poetry Project is to develop joint research with the University of Cambridge and the University of the West Indies on Caribbean poetry and to enhance knowledge, understanding and creative engagement with Caribbean poetry among secondary school students, aged 11–18.

It is also aimed at supporting teachers in developing knowledge and understanding of Caribbean poetry and the teaching of the subject.

Dr Ramsammy hoping for productive second sugar crop

he second crop of sugar cultivation is expected to commence in June, Agriculture Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy said.

He said the latter part of June will see factories beginning to grind sugar cane; however, they will start on various dates. Since the completion of the first crop, during the out of crop season, estates have been undergoing maintenance works.

The second crop production is expected to last up until the second half of July.

Dr Ramsammy had announced that the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has reduced this year’s first crop to achieve a better yield in the current crop. The corporation is now hoping to achieve an increased second crop target of 190,000 tonnes.

This, he said is to satisfy the overall annual target of some 240,000 tonnes.

However, despite the cutting back on the first crop, the inclement weather also had some impact on the downfall in production.

GuySuCo’s first crop production fell short its target of more than 70,000 tonnes, producing just below 48,000 tonnes.

He disclosed that another person who was armed with a knife and was about to stab his brother, but was stopped by his sister.

The brother said that after the group of attackers moved away from his brother, they got into a vehicle and escaped.

“When the action done, me brother get up and we ask he if he ok and he say ‘yes’ so I end up running on the road to see them guys face, but they drive off same time so I left looking at the vehicle and then a woman come up to me and tell me that me brother fall down and when I go I see they hustling to put he in a car to go to the hospital”.

Devon explained that he went into the car and was trying to get his brother to talk on their way to the hospital, but he did not. “He was breathing but not much, he take couple breath and when we reach at the hospital he gave one last breath and water come out he eye and then he head fall back so we rush he in the hospital and the doctors work on he for like an hour and then he tell me that he gone.”

The brother further stated that they got some information about some of the men that were involved in the fight, but when they went with the police to the spot, no one was there. He said that they do not frequent the dogfights but decided to go on Sunday because it was a holiday while noting that they were not involved in any “gambling or betting” and were mere spectators.

The police are still trying to locate the suspect.

Meanwhile, Richmond’s body is at the GPHC mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination, which is expected to be done on Wednesday.

olice have taken a woman into custody for questioning in relation to the stabbing of 31-year-old Adrian Richmond at Industry, East Coast Demerara.

The woman was taken into custody on Sunday evening and is believed to have been the person who initiated the fight which led to Richmond’s death.

Richmond, an ex-police officer of Lot 104 Atlantic Ville, ECD, was stabbed to his chest and abdomen during a squabble with several other persons in Industry after a dogfight.

Following the stabbing, two women were taken into custody. The other woman is the owner of the property where the dogfight was held; however, she was released on Monday morning after being placed on bail.

The brother of Richmond, Devon (only name given), told Guyana Times that he, Richmond, and their sister were at the dogfight and were hyping the winning animal when the female (in custody) became annoyed. The brother said that he and the woman had a “talk” after which she

he Guyana Prize for Literature in collaboration with the Caribbean Poetry Project will be hosting a book launch and poetry workshop in the Education Lecture Theatre (ELT) at the University of Guyana (UG), Turkeyen Campus on Wednesday.

According to a release, the workshop will commence at 17:00h.

The Caribbean Poetry Project is being led by the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom and the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, and will team up with the Guyana Prize for this special event involving four Caribbean poets.

The first part of the programme will be the launching of two new books. The first, Travel Light, Travel Dark, written by prominent Guyanese poet John Agard,

who was recently awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry.

The second book to be highlighted, Sun Time Snow Time, written by another Guyanese poet and novelist Grace Nichols.

Agard will be introduced

by Professor Morag Styles of the University of Cambridge, and Nichols by lecturer in English, University of Guyana Kandasia Kendall.

Deputy Vice Chancellor Al Creighton will chair the programme.

The book launch will be followed immediately by a poetry workshop for writers, in which there will be a panel of four distinguished Caribbean poets. These are Mark McWatt, Philip Nanton, John Agard and Grace Nichols.

McWatt is among the most outstanding and celebrated Guyanese writers.

He has won several literary prizes for poetry and fiction, including the Guyana Prize, the Caribbean Prize, the Commonwealth Writers Prize, and the Casa de las Americas.

Nanton, born in St Vincent and the Grenadines, is a poetry and prose writer acclaimed for his performance poetry and publications in Barbados.

There is no charge for admission and all interested persons are welcome to participate.

unior Local Government and Regional Development Minister Norman Whittaker over the weekend visited several communities in Region Seven, where he interacted with the residents and discussed their issues.

One of the communities he visited was Batavia where residents expressed their gratitude for the investments made by the government to develop the community. One resident illustrated that from 1966 to present, the village has advanced significantly.

In his remarks to the residents, Minister Whittaker recalled Guyana’s achievement of independence from Great Britain, and in going further back, he reminisced on when the Amerindians first arrived in Guyana thousands of years ago and what obtained then.

He illustrated that at that time there was no school, health facility, teachers, or doctors and they depended on the forest resources for their survival.

In the 21st century, education is the key to survival, he posited.

The minister noted that while everyone cannot become doctors and lawyers,

having an education ensures that individuals have the necessary skills to make a living for themselves and their families.

Minister Whittaker commended those who made a case for the construction of a school in the community, and encouraged parents to send their children to school regularly.

The minister also recognised that in Batavia, and several other communities, the residents have been neglecting the land and turning towards mining. He

urged that, while mining is an honest way of making a living, they should not depend on it solely, but to also engage in farming activities so as to sustain their families.

One of the concerns raised by the community was that of water supply.

A few years ago the community benefited from several water tanks; however, the village is still faced with water issues during the dry season. The residents made suggestions for wells to be installed in the community.

Minister Whittaker assured the community that a team from the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) will visit to do the necessary assessments. He also urged that the residents interact with the team from GWI so that they can inform the officials about the water flow in the community, and identify suitable spots for a well.

Another concern raised related to land titling, and the minister informed them that this issue will be related to Amerindian Affairs Minister Pauline Sukhai.

Some of the other communities visited by the minister were Rivers View, Itaballi, Agatash, Karrau and Kartabo.

he Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry has announced that it will be conducting a 10-month residential training programme at the Kuru Kururu Training Centre (KKTC) to enhance the employment potential of youths aged 16 to 25 years, from September to July 2014.

“The young people are chosen from over 800 student applications from all across Guyana, to be trained in skill areas, such as business studies, carpentry, electrical installation, joinery, masonry, motor mechanics, plumbing, welding and fabrication, and garment construction,” Assistant Director of Youth, Devanand Ramdatt, said.

According to the assistant director of youths, persons under 18 will require the approval of their parents/ guardians. Proof of age will be requested upon selection.

During the full-time Monday-Friday programme, students will take the course of their choice and visits will be made to relevant places

of interest. A six-week work attachment to specific agencies will also be arranged for the students, who hail from the 10 administrative regions.

Interested persons will be required to complete an application form and write the mandatory entry level test, both the application and test must be handwritten.

The recruitment team will visit Amerindian and riverine communities, between June 1 and July 13.

They will also be at the Parika, Patentia, Uitvlugt, Wakenaam, and Leguan secondary schools, and Goed Fortuin Primary School, West Coast Demerara; Vryheid’s Lust and Paradise primary schools, East Coast Demerara; HelenaMahaica, Berbice; Diamond Community Centre and Timehri Primary School, East Bank Demerara; St Mary’s Primary and the Kuru Kururu Extension Centre, Soesdyke; and Carifesta Sports Complex, central Georgetown.

Earlier in May, the Linden-Soesdyke Highway centre began to benefit from the services of a Japanese volunteer information technology teacher, through the Japan International Cooperation Association (JICA). The new teacher, Susumu Suzuki, noted that during his six-month tenure, he will ensure that his expertise is utilised to the fullest capacity. Suzuki has previously served as a volunteer in Thailand and Jordan.

The KKTC utilises available resources to combine skills training and entrepreneurship to enhance the employment potential of young people who have left the formal school system and need to be gainfully occupied. They are trained in technical vocational skills, primarily at the Kuru Kuru Training Centre on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway and the Sophia Training Centre in Georgetown.

Georgetown-Lethem road proposal to be UN emphasises presented by June importance of school

etailed proposals of the long awaited road construction project from Georgetown to Lethem are to be unveiled by June, Presidential Adviser on Governance Gail Teixeira told Region Nine residents.

She made the announcement on the eve of Guyana’s 47th independence anniversary at the St Ignatius benab following a cultural presentation ahead of the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead at midnight.

“There are two major teams now between Guyana and Brazil, and Venezuela that have been meeting over the last few months… for the development of the road from Brazil to Georgetown, and in June, what is called the infrastructural team will be reporting to the presidents of the two countries on what are their proposals and designs and other issues,” Teixeira said.

The highly anticipated project is one that former Brazilian President Luis Inacio- Lula da Silva had assured would be the next major undertaking to follow the Takutu River Bridge that was commissioned in 2009.

When complete, the stretch of road will significantly reduce travel time which from Georgetown to Lethem takes about 12 to 13 hours at present, and make business more efficient, particularly the transport of goods and services.

Public Works Ministry has over the years been responsible for maintenance works on the long stretch of road which in the rainy season poses a challenge to commuters, particularly heavyduty vehicles.

The paving of the road is also necessary given the large scale plantation type agriculture in the Rupununi Savannahs. In 2010, harvesting of rice in the Rupununi commenced at Moco Moco, Region Nine.

The Georgetown to Lethem road was chief among the priorities of a meeting between officials of Guyana and Brazil that led to the establishment of a border committee to focus on a regime for the fron-

tier territories; Lethem and Bonfim.

The stringing of the 560 kilometres of fibre-optic cable from Brazil to boost Guyana’s Internet connectivity was also part of the agenda. The project that began in the third quarter of 2012 has reached the stage where it is expected to be operational by September this year.

Teixeira told residents to be optimistic about this project, and the opportunities that will be provided for communities in the hinterland where the cable passes through.

“Connectivity in terms of Internet is critical in this modern world of technology… young people want

Teixeira’s address also focused on developments in Amerindian communities under the current administration since 1992, and the opportunities which Amerindians have, quite unlike other countries’ natives.

he United Nations has stressed the importance of providing meals for schoolchildren, particularly in times of crisis, and notes that this is still lacking in many developing countries.

“School feeding assures that where quality education is available, children are able to take advantage of the opportunity to learn,” said World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Ertharin Cousin.

“It’s an investment that pays off in the future with better-educated, stronger and healthier adults and it’s also a critical safety net to prevent the most vulnerable from suffering in times of crisis,” she said.

The State of School Feeding Worldwide report, produced by WFP, provides a global analysis of school feeding programmes in developed and developing nations, as well as data on how governments use school meals as a safety net in times of crisis.

According to WFP, around 368 million children – about one in five – get a meal at school every day in 169 developing and developed countries.

However, despite the global nature of school feeding,

the coverage of these programmes is lowest where they are most needed. In low-income countries, only 18 per cent receive a daily meal at school, compared to nearly 49 per cent of children in middle-income countries.

Global investment in these programmes is about US$75 billion, with most coming from government budgets. While these may seem like a large investment, the benefits are even greater as the report states that for every US$1 spent by government and donors at least US$3 is gained in economic returns.

Over the past five years, at least 38 countries have scaled up their school feeding programmes in response to a crisis, whether related to food prices, conflict, natural disaster or financial volatility.

“During the food and fuel crises in 2008, many governments struggled to protect the most vulnerable from hunger and looked to school meals to achieve that. In the current recession, even wealthy nations are examining how school meals can prevent families sliding deeper into poverty and hunger,” said the report’s lead author Carmen Burbano.

They issued a red alert – the highest possible – saying the volcano could erupt imminently. The evacuation will affect some 460 families living within a 25km (15 miles) radius of Copahue.

The 2965 metre (nearly 10,000 feet) volcano sits in the Andes cordillera, on the border with Argentina.

he Ecuadorean Space Agency (EXA) says it will announce later on Monday if it can re-establish contact with its first and only satellite, Pegasus.

Pegasus, a nano-satellite, collided with a cloud of particles from an old Soviet rocket on Thursday.

EXA chief Ronnie Nader said it was still in orbit but was spinning wildly over two axes. Nader said Pegasus could neither receive nor send signals, but that he held out hopes it could be fixed.

Pegasus, a small cube measuring 10cm (4 inch) along its edge and weighing just 1.2kg (2.6lb), was launched from the Chinese spaceport of Jiuquan on

April 25. Orbiting the Earth at a height of 650km (404 miles), it transmitted pictures from space while playing recordings of the Ecuadorean national anthem.

Less than a month after its launch, it collided with a particle cloud from an old Tsyklon-3 rocket, which had been in space since 1985.

While EXA scientists were relieved there had been no frontal clash, the satellite’s solar panels were damaged in a lateral collision.

EXA announced that Pegasus had “survived” the crash, but that the satellite’s antenna had “lost its orientation and the craft is spinning wildly over two of its axes”. (Excerpt from BBC News)

This extends to those in government offices, some of whom believe that their jobs are never going to be in jeopardy, but are also feeling the negative effects of the global economic problems and allowing them to reflect in their attitudes toward customers. The political status quo in the Cayman Islands was shaken up at the end of last year with the arrest of then premier Bush on suspicion of fraud and cor-

ruption. He has since been formally charged with two counts of misconduct in public office, four counts of breach of trust by a member of the Legislative Assembly, and five counts of theft.

Mysterious damage to house in Jamaica triggers talk of ghost

t is Labour Day. But instead of working on a project or heading to beach, in keeping with tradition, approximately 200 persons gather at a house in St Elizabeth. They wanted to see for themselves what so many have been talking about for weeks – the torment of one family by a ‘duppy’.

A sharp sound sent a number of persons jumping to their feet in an attempt to flee the scene. But loud laughter erupted after people realised that it was only a piece of zinc disturbed by one of the watchers that had caused the sound. But while those on the outside were enjoying and capitalising on the situation, the five occu-

pants of the house, which included a girl aged 12, had nothing to smile about.

Later in the day, one man who identified himself as a son-in-law to the owners, said that the house is stoned constantly and items inside destroyed and burnt without the perpetrator being seen.

“You don’t see who stoning the house, the house is burnt and you don’t see who burning it. That is what is going on,” he said, as he sat beside his mother-in-law under a tree.

The shell of the car’s transmission system stands upright in the rubble, while the twisted frame was flung about 10 metres away.

Days after suicide bombers attacked a uranium mine in this West African nation, the carefully coordinated and sophisticated nature of the assault is evident at the high security site.

The Somair mine, run by French nuclear giant Areva, was one of two sites attacked simultaneously at dawn on Thursday, May 23.

One person was slain and 14 other employees were injured at the mine

while 18 soldiers and one civilian were killed at the Agadez army base 200 kilometres south of the uranium mining town, making it the worst terrorist attacks in Niger since France launched a military operation in neighbouring Mali in January.

A team of France24 journalists – the first foreign TV reporters allowed at the Somair mine since the suicide bombing – found evidence that the attackers had a clear idea of the functioning and layout of the sprawling, tightly secured site.

aniel Kish has been blind since he was 13 months old, but if you were to watch him from a distance, you wouldn’t know it. Walking down the street, the 47-year-old looks like anyone else. When he reaches the corner of an intersection, he waits for traffic to pass and then proceeds on his way. As he walks, he dodges the signposts and mailboxes that line the sidewalk. He can even describe the size of the buildings he passes and tell you if they’re made from brick or glass.

Kish can do this because he’s taught himself how to echolocate, using sounds to position himself in his environment. By clicking his

tongue and paying close attention to the echo, he can identify trees, buildings and people. Similar to the sonar that bats and dolphins use, Kish argues echolocation is a skill that all people possess, it just needs to be developed.

Without sight, Kish says, “the seeing part of the brain learns to gather information from non-visual (senses)” like hearing and touch.

But echolocation is much more than just a theoretical concept for Kish. He’s the head of an organisation called World Access for the Blind, a travelling academy of trainers that teaches people with blindness or impaired vision how to “see” using sound. (Excerpt from CNN)

ermany’s national railway company, Deutsche Bahn, plans to test small drones to try to reduce the amount of graffiti being sprayed on its property.

The idea is to use airborne infra-red cameras to collect evidence, which could then be used to prosecute vandals who deface property at night. A company spokesman said drones would be tested at rail depots soon.

But it is not yet clear how Germany’s strict anti-surveillance laws might affect their use. Graffiti is reported to cost Deutsche Bahn about 7.60 million euros (£6.5 million; US$10 million) a year.

German media report that each drone will cost about 60,000 euros and fly almost

silently, up to 150 metres (495 feet) above ground.

The BBC’s Stephen Evans in Berlin says using cameras to film people surreptitiously is a sensitive issue in Germany, where privacy is very highly valued.

When Google sent its cameras through the country three years ago to build up its “Street View” of 20 cities, many people objected to their houses appearing online. Even Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said: “I will do all I can to prevent it”.

Such was the opposition that Google was compelled to give people an opt-out.

The policy, put forth by a district government on Monday, dates back to 1994, but does not appear to have been enforced until recent weeks. It does not apply to Buddhists and comes amid accusations of ethnic cleansing. “They shouldn’t discriminate. This is against human rights,” said Suu Kyi, adding that the policy is also illegal.

Sarah McClay, 24, died after being attacked Friday by a Sumatran tiger while working in the big cat enclosure building at the South Lakes Wild Animal Park in Dalton-in-Furness, the Cumbria Constabulary said.

The enclosure has various indoor and outdoor compartments connected by lockable doors, police said. Keepers enter various parts of the enclosure to perform duties.

“However, systems are in place (to) ensure that animals and keepers remain apart at all times,” the constabulary said in a statement posted on its website. “At some stage this has

Construction of Ethio-Kenyan electric highway to commence

he construction of the Ethiopia-Kenya interconnector high-voltage electric highway line will start in September.

The project has secured financing from the World Bank (WB) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Both banks will provide 80 per cent of the funds needed for the US$1.26 billion project. The WB will lend Ethiopia US$243 mil-

lion and Kenya US$441 million. The AfDB is lending an additional US$242.9 million to the project.

The Ethiopian government will contribute US$21.1 million with the Kenyan government contributing US$88 million. The project is expected to provide revenues to Ethiopia, through the export of electricity to Kenya, and increase the volume and

reduce the cost of electricity supply in Kenya.

hina’s premier has waded into an intensifying trade dispute with Europe, warning that EU investigations into Chinese-made solar panels and telecommunications equipment would backfire by hurting European consumers.

“The cases over these two types of products will hurt Chinese industries, business and jobs and also

damage the vital interests of European users and consumers,” Li Keqiang said en route to Berlin on Sunday during his first foreign trip since becoming premier. “We express firm opposition.”

Li’s comments mark the first time that China’s top leadership has weighed in on the trade disputes, and come as the solar case – the EU’s biggest ever trade investigation – enters a criti-

cal phase.

The EU must decide before June 6 whether to go ahead with a proposal from Karel De Gucht, trade commissioner, to impose provisional duties averaging 47 per cent on imported Chinese solar products for dumping, or selling goods below cost. uropean aerospace and defence group EADS and partner Northrop Grumman say they will continue to work with the German government on a drone project that Berlin cancelled earlier this month.

Germany scrapped the plans to purchase and modify Euro Hawk reconnaissance drones because of the cost of meeting standards required to win aviation approval.

A resulting row over whether taxpayers’ money has been squandered has dominated German media and also threatens to tarnish the reputation of Thomas de Maiziere, defence minister and one of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s most trusted cabinet members, just four months before an election.

The makers said in a joint statement on Monday that they would continue to work

with the customer to address any concerns. “The team will provide an affordable and achievable plan to complete flight testing of the initial asset and the eventual production and fielding of the full system of four additional aircraft,” they said.

The action sequel made US$122.2 million over the four-day Memorial weekend. “The Hangover Part III” took US$52 million.

With the continued strength of “Star Trek: Into Darkness”, “The Great Gatsby” and “Iron Man”, early estimates suggest it could be a record-breaking weekend.

“Between Friends” and genres

A

s Oscar Wilde noted – all comparisons are odious. However in this instance it’s hard not to compare the all-Trini movie “Between Friends”, which made its Caribbean premiere last Tuesday night at the Central Bank Auditorium, with the recently released Jamaican (shot in Trinidad), “Home Again”.

Both are didactic sociodramas, highlighting significant regional and global issues. While “Home Again” focused on the plight of deportees, “Between Friends” is concerned with young adults’ exploration of sex (platonic and otherwise, but strictly heterosexual), relationships and the unforeseen risks of unprotected sex, notably HIV. “Between Friends” has already garnered awards and showcases at major diasporic film festivals both in North America and Africa, and it’s not hard to see why.

Its AIDS awareness message directed at a young audience is probably worth a 100 public sexual health campaigns (particularly in the Caribbean and Africa, two regions which still unfortunately register far too high in AIDS statistics). An attractive young cast, a contemporary soundtrack and some stunning cinematography, which brings the new Port of Spain cityscape to the screen for the first time along with the usual tropical tropes of Maracas and Mayaro beaches, all make for easy-on-the-eye viewing.

While kudos is due to both director Omari Jackson and the TT Film Company for their joint venture, this review seeks to move beyond self-congratulation, and to assess the movie as a feature film, vying for screening space in world cinema. “Slumdogs” and “City of God” are only two recent examples from the developing world which have captivated a world audience, largely because the messages they carry are subliminal or suggested rather than explicit.

It’s the old story of showing rather than telling, what poet TS Eliot called the “objective correlative”.

Human drama

In the two cited films, audiences are pulled into a human drama, carried by characters with an onscreen life of their own, apparently unhindered by directorial strings. We believe in these characters and care what happens to them and it’s only our engagement with their stories, rather than an idea however laudable, that we are drawn to reflect on the messages embedded in their stories.

There’s no disputing the attractiveness of the cast of “Between Friends” but within the confines of the script, none of them are able to escape from stereotype (married man cheating, young sexually irresponsible stud, undecided tease, naive virgin duped by exploitative older man, faithful best friend seeking more than a platonic relationship, odd girl out who resists peer pressure

to have sex she’s not ready for). Apart from admiring their clothes or physiques, do we actually believe in or care about a group of privileged, over-protected youths angsting about the mechanics of sex, how to initiate, or maintain control in relationships?

Much of the dialogue repeats clichés which don’t advance necessary audience empathy: “We’ve never spent the night together…I’m working late at the office…Why do you always come over for sex and just leave afterwards?...You men are all the same, anything to get a girl in bed and then you move on…You’re such a sl*t you ol’ ho etc.”

Despite the very best of intentions, “Between Friends” never really frees itself from its message(s) or allows the audience to come to their own conclusions, which creates an unnecessary tension between wanting to endorse the message, while trying to relate to characters who are at best two-dimensional, in a script that wavers between socio drama and public sexual health sensitisation. At times, it seems as two separate projects, and narratives incongruously stitched together.

AIDS case-study, complete with clumsy indoctrination about prejudice – notably in the scenes where Denis the married cheat diagnosed as HIV positive is scorned by his co-workers. Director Jackson remarked at the premiere that the film had been “a labour of love” and it may seem uncharitable to criticise a project aimed at informing and alerting vulnerable young people to the sometimes cruel risks of unprotected sex and exploitative relationships.

The cases of Maria, whose future as a law student is threatened by her one-night stand with stud Jimani and Mia, the 17-yearold fooled by married player Denis, may be real and salutary, but if the main directorial objective was to alert young audiences to the risks of unsafe sex, how many of those watching the screen will relate to the lives of a group of young people living the life of the gated bourgeoisie? True there’s the obvious message that disease is no respecter of social class but as Mcluhan pointed out years ago – the medium is the message and unconvincing acting and a script which fails to move beyond stereotype and cliché cannot be redeemed by either good intentions or some exotic backdrops. Vybz Kartel trial adjourned again

T

he murder trial of singer Vybz Kartel was adjourned to June 10 after a witness failed to appear in court on Monday.

Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer, is jointly charged with Lenburgh McDonald and Nigel Thompson in the July 2011 murder of St Catherine businessman Barrington “Bossy” Bryan, who was gunned down by men travelling in a motor vehicle.

The trial was first adjourned in February after the prosecution told the court that the main witness in the case was being uncooperative. The prosecution says it intends to take steps to have the trial take place without the witness, and to have the statement of the witness entered into evidence.

The dancehall DJ has been in custody despite J$3 million bail.

First meeting of CPL cricket committee convened in Jamaica

T

he newly-appointed Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Cricket Committee, chaired by former Jamaica Prime Minister P J Patterson, held its first meeting in Jamaica, where key issues were discussed.

The meeting also looked at the CPL plans, while progress reports were presented and decisions were taken pertaining to the inaugural tournament, which starts on July 30 in Barbados.

The initial part of the meeting was a CPL overview and introductory forum, a release from CPL Event Director Rhonda Kelly stated.

Patterson opened the meeting by welcoming the group and reiterating his thoughts about being involved with the CPL.

“Very often former prime ministers are asked to do many things, and we need to learn to say no.

However, when I was asked to chair the CPL Cricket Committee, I did not hesitate,” said Patterson. “I truly regard cricket as pivotal to the Caribbean process, and chairing this committee is of utmost importance to me, because I believe sports entertainment is big business!”

He stressed that everyone must work together to ensure the CPL gets off to a good start. “We must be the envy of the world and use this tournament to develop the Caribbean brand,” he said.

“This was a very productive first meeting, and an important one as the player draft is imminent and the tournament itself is just under three months away,” said Patterson.

“It is imperative that we are all on the same page, and informed of all the preparations that have been made to date,” he said. “Hence, I was very encouraged and impressed by what I’ve heard and I’m pleased by the spirit of cooperation that I sensed around the table.”

Patterson said that, judging by the plans he heard, the people of the Caribbean, and indeed cricket enthusiasts around the world, should be very excited about what is to come from the CPL. “I believe West Indians will be proud to call this event their own,” he said.

Overview

An overview of the CPL was given by O’Donohoe, followed by details about the structure of the tournament, operations, and the partnership between CPL and Digicel. The player structure and the draft process were also discussed, as well as other tournament committee business.

Cameron and Hall echoed similar sentiments.

“The WICB is pleased to be a part of the CPL and we are happy about the partnerships being forged between the organisations,” said Cameron. He said the WICB’s mission is to develop and promote West Indies cricket for the benefit and enjoyment of the West Indian people, and this ties into one of CPL’s objectives.

“We are keen on working well with the CPL to this common goal, and I will be encouraging the regional cricket boards, the players and all other West Indies cricket stakeholders to play their part in making this tournament a success,” said Cameron.

Hall said WIPA has been working closely with the CPL and will be encouraging its members to solidify their commitments to the league by signing their agreements, as soon as possible.

After the initial introductory gathering, the members of the CPL Cricket Committee continued discussions about the business of the league.

Tournament

A key decision that was made by the committee was in response to a request from the Sri Lanka Cricket Board for CPL to change its tournament dates. It was agreed unanimously that the CPL dates could not, and would not, be changed at this stage, as too much had already been done.

In addition, the committee decided that, although there is an anti-corruption clause in the player contracts, there is always a need for the cricketers and the league to be more educated on what constitutes corruption, and the ways in which they may be approached.

Each CPL franchise team will, therefore, be required to attend a presentation about corruption, which will be facilitated by the WICB. The Digicel-sponsored CPL will feature 24 matches played in six franchise countries, namely Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Six top West Indies stars have been confirmed as franchise players – Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy, and Marlon Samuels.

Also confirmed are six overseas franchise players – former Australia captains Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting, ex-New Zealand captain Ross Taylor, Pakistan Twenty20 International captain Mohammad Hafeez, former South Africa test batsman Herschelle Gibbs, and Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan.

A total of 90 players will be contracted to play in the CPL. Each of the six franchise teams will comprise 15 player squads. All teams are required to have a minimum number of local players from their franchise country and at least two of them must be under the age of 23.

Teams can also field a maximum of four international players. The remainder of the team must consist of regional and/or local players.

Swann helps England towards win over New Zealand G

raeme Swann took four wickets to bowl England to the brink of victory over New Zealand in the second Test at Headingley, although they may yet be denied by the weather.

England captain Alastair Cook brought up his 25th Test century as the hosts batted until 25 minutes after lunch on Monday before declaring on 287-5 to set the Black Caps an improbable 468 to win.

A composed 70 from Ross Taylor frustrated England, with the tourists aided at times by surprisingly defensive field placements, but two late Swann scalps reduced them to 1586 when bad light ended play.

Four more wickets today would win the match for Cook’s men, but with heavy rain forecast for the Leeds area, the contest may well end in a draw.

That result would give England a 1-0 series victory but the feeling remains that with less cautious approach the hosts could have won this Test with time to spare.

Their decision not to enforce the follow-on on Sunday was followed by a painstaking final session in which Jonathan Trott scored 11 off 69 balls.

And although England showed much more attacking intent on Monday morning, with Trott going on to make 76, they then delayed declaring until New Zealand’s target was 50 runs more than the highest successful fourthinnings run chase in Test history.

New Zealand lost an early wicket when Stuart Broad generated steep bounce from the Football Stand End and induced Peter Fulton into fending a catch to Ian Bell at gully.

Swann, surprisingly left out for last year’s Headingley Test against South Africa, followed up his first-innings four-wicket haul with two more strikes early in his spell.

Kane Williamson fell to the most marginal of lbw decisions after playing across the line, his failed review showing the ball pitched just in line with off stump and turning to shave the outside of leg.

Hamish Rutherford struck an attractive 42 but a sudden moment of hesitancy proved his downfall as he prodded forward and was caught at short leg off bat and pad.

Torres in Spain squad Palace return to Premier for Confederations Cup League after win

ut-of-favour Spain striker Fernando Torres has been named in his country’s provisional Confederations Cup squad.

The Chelsea striker, 29, who won the Europa League with the London club this season, had failed to make Spain coach Vicente del Bosque’s recent squads.

Eight other Englishbased players have been selected, with the 26-strong party being reduced to 23 before the start of the tournament in Brazil on 15 June.

Barcelona’s Carles Puyol and Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo miss out.

The 39-year-old, a loser in three previous play-off finals, struck from the penalty spot at the end of the first half of extra time as the Eagles ended an eight-year absence from the Premier League.

It was a superb penalty kick into the top corner and came after a clumsy foul by Marco Cassetti on Wilfried Zaha, who has been at Palace since the age of nine and was playing his final game before his summer move to Manchester United.

Watford almost equalised at the very end but Joel Ward headed off the line from Fernando Forestieri as the Eagles held on to win a match that had been described as being worth £120m to the victors.

Palace were almost relegated to the third tier of English football at the end of the 2009-10 season and have been in administration since their last period in the Premier League, but they can now look forward to an exciting and financially beneficial chapter in their history.

starting XI, eventually began to show the sort of precise, attacking football that had taken them to within a whisker of automatic promotion, but neither keeper had to make a save in the first half.

If anything, the final was even worse in the opening stages of the second half before Palace, who had won only one of their final 10 games of the regular season, finally started to create some decent chances.

afael Nadal survived one of his toughest matches at the French Open as he overcame Germany’s Daniel Brands in four sets to reach round two on Monday.

The seven-time champion began the defence of his title with an unexpectedly testing 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 6-3 win over the world number 59.

Nadal was in deep trouble at a set down and 0-3 in the second set tie-break, sparking memories of his last match at a Grand Slam tournament.

Lukas Rosol caused one of the biggest upsets in tennis history when he beat Nadal at Wimbledon last year, and a subsequent seven-month lay-off with a knee injury meant the Spaniard was only now returning to Grand Slam action.

He ran into another seeming-

ly routine opponent finding the form of his life, as Brands’s heavy serve and flat groundstrokes kept him on the back foot for the first two sets.

“Sometimes, when you feel you are hitting not a bad shot and every time comes back a bomb and a winner from the beginning, sometimes that’s frustrating,” Nadal said afterwards.

With a two-set deficit looming, Nadal fought his way out of trouble to take the second set with successive forehand and backhand winners down the line.

He then broke the Brands serve for the first time in the match, but had to see off three break points as the German pushed him all the way in the third set.

Two breaks in the fourth helped Nadal to a relatively comfortable finish, but his 53rd win

in 54 matches at Roland Garros was one of the more memorable as he dropped only the 15th set in that remarkable run.

“At two sets to love, I don’t say that I wouldn’t have a chance, because I always hope that there is a chance and I will keep fighting,” said Nadal. “But you have to play under a lot of pressure the rest of the match.

“So I found the solution at the right time.

“At 5-4 [in the tie-break] I think I played two break points - one winner with my forehand down the line, and then a fantastic return winner down the line with my backhand.

“In the right moment I hit two fantastic shots and that probably was the match.”

hashank Manohar, the former BCCI president, has called for an investigation by an external investigation agency of all the IPL 2013 matches.

Manohar said the BCCI should not solely depend on the board’s and the ICC’s Anit-Corruption and Security Units (ACSU) to keep cricket clean as they do not have the authority to track illegal activities - tracking phone conversations, for example.

“The BCCI should immediately file a criminal complaint with the investigating agencies, urging them to probe all 75 games [76] in the current IPL edition,” Manohar told the Times of India. “The board should provide them [the investigating agency] with a raw feed of the games as well as CCTV footage recorded at every venue.

“It has to deal with this menace with an iron fist. The board or ACSU do not have any machinery or legal authority to track the illegal activities, so it should not depend on these agencies alone.”

His comments come in wake of the alleged spot-fixing in IPL 2013, in relation to which three Rajasthan Royals cricketers were arrested on May 16. The controversy has since grown, with top Chennai Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan being arrested for allegedly betting on IPL games, and his fatherin-law - who is also the BCCI president and managing director Super Kings’ owner, India Cements - N Srinivasan refusing to resign from his post with the Indian board despite mounting pressure to do so.

Manohar said in an earlier interview with the Telegraph that he had spoken to some of the BCCI officials before their emergent working committee meeting on May 19, and told them if they wanted “to clean things up, then do it thoroughly. If, at the end of it all, 13 and not three players are involved in fixing, so be it”.

Apart from making sure the IPL is clean, now Manohar said it’s important to have stringent processes in place for international cricket played in India too. “The board should approach the central home minister, requesting governmental support in investigating the criminal actions in any event run by the BCCI, which would also include international fixtures. It should request [the minister] to send an advisory to all states one month before the start of an event, so that the investigating machinery can swing in action well in advance to prevent any match-fixing , betting or spotfixing.”

The BCCI, he said, should ask players to register their mobilephone numbers with the board, so that the investigating agencies could monitor things with more efficiency. (Cricinfo)

Heat offense puts away Pacers 114-96 in game three I NDIANAPOLIS Miami put LeBron James right in the middle of the action Sunday night, and this time, the Indiana Pacers did not have an answer for him or his Miami Heat teammates.

By moving James to the post, the Heat won the scoring battle in the paint, kept Indiana at arm’s length and pulled away for a 114-96 victory and a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. ‘’I made a conscious effort to get down in the post tonight, to put pressure on their defense,’’ James said. ‘’The coaching staff wanted me to be down there tonight, and my teammates allowed me to do that.’’

It was a move reminiscent of when the Los Angeles Lakers played Magic Johnson in the post in place of the injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during the NBA Finals more than two decades ago.

And it worked just as well.

James rebounded from the two late turnovers that cost Miami in Game 2 by scoring 22 points, grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists. Hours after Dwyane Wade learned he would only be tagged with a flagrant foul from Game 2 and not a suspension, he finished with 18 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Chris Bosh added 15 points and three rebounds and all five Miami starters reached double figures.

The move allowed Miami to outscore Indiana 56-32 in the paint.

Perhaps that much should be expected from a team with this much scoring punch and that has won 23 of its last 24 on the road.

uccess/Mahaica Invaders and Mike’s Wellwoman emerged as champions of the softball competition on Sunday when the Enmore Community Centre Cricket Club (ECCCC) staged its fundraiser at the club’s venue, East Coast Demerara.

Watched by a crowd of about 1500, Success/ Mahaica Invaders, a team featuring players from the two villages, whipped Parika Defenders by 10 wickets in the men’s 15-over final, while Mike’s Wellwoman had to work hard for their three-wicket win over Trophy Stall Angels in the female 10-over final.

Batting first in the male division, Parika Defenders were dismissed for 80 from 14.2 overs with R Rambharose making 16.

Rudy (only name) bagged 3-13 for Success/Mahaica, who romped to victory at 85 without loss in the 12th over. Man of the Match Jagdesh (only name) stroked a solid undefeated 58 to lead the victory chase.

Floodlights XI and Enmore were the other teams in the men’s competition. On the distaff side, Mike’s Wellwoman prevailed in an exciting finish against Trophy Stall Angels with the match going down to the final over.

“And now in the next few days, we have another important tournament coming up, the Champions Trophy.

In a kind gesture, the Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association presented a cash donation of $70,000 to the ECCCC to aid in the club’s development. The ECCCC was also promised

a tennis table, which will be donated by the National Sports Commission, in collaboration with the Guyana Table Tennis Association.

Speaking with this publication, members of the ECCCC said the event was a huge success. They also thanked those who supported the initiative, including the sponsors, patrons, cricket commentator Inderjeet Persaud, who kept the crowd abreast with the scores all day, members of the ECCCC, who volunteered their time and resources, and other partners.

Proceeds from the activity will go directly towards the purchasing of critical pieces of equipment for the club.

Mo Farah enjoys fifth consecutive London 10k victory

ouble Olympic champion Mo Farah admits staying unbeaten is “really important” after a fifth straight win in the London 10,000 road race on Monday.

The 30-year-old won in a time of 29 minutes 13 seconds and remains unbeaten outdoors since the World Championships in Daegu nearly two years ago.

He was using it as preparation for August’s Moscow World Championships.

“It is a good record to have, it is really important you continue that,” Farah said.

Farah has been ever-present since the event’s launch in 2008 and set two British records during his previous four wins.

He made his major world breakthrough when he won a silver medal in the 10,000 metre and then the gold in the 5000 metre at the 2011 World Championships, and followed that up with gold medals in both distances at last year’s London Olympics.

Emily Pidgeon finished in third. Farah said: “For my standard it was a low key race. I enjoyed the crowd and the most important thing was trying to win the race.

“I have a lot of confidence and am looking forward to it (the World Championships).

You have to look after your body, the coach knows what he is doing, and just take it as a normal race.

“I feel confident, I don’t know about invincible, but you do carry that confidence with you. You go out there and think you should win.

“One big mistake we made in Daegu is we didn’t know about Ibrahim Jeilan (the winner), so we have to be aware of what everyone else is doing but at the same time knowing what you have to do.” (BBC Sport)

Semi-final line-up set for Titans win T20 Guinness in the Streets Independence Cup national tourney U

he national Guinness in the Streets football competition continued on Sunday evening with four teams making their way to the knockout phase.

On the final night of preliminary action at Demerara Park (Banks DIH Parking Lot), Hard Core Bar of Bartica defeated East Coast side Victoria Church Yard United 4-3 on penalties after they played to a nil-all draw at regulation time.

A Warren Gilkes double and a single strike from Teyon Esmond powered Plaisance to 3-1 win over Bartica’s Millenium.

Gilkes scored in the 12th and 20th minutes, while Esmond was on target in the 17th minute. Orland Angus, in the fourth minute, ac-

counted for Millenium’s lone goal.

The boys from Back Circle were convincing 3-0 winners over Silent Assassins of Linden.

Andy Duke with a double in the eighth and 19th minutes and Wayne Wilson with a goal in the third minute found the back of the small goal for Back Circle.

Silver Bullets of Linden chalked up a 2-0 win over Leopold Street United with Nigel Bennette in the eighth minute and Clifton Alley six minutes later being the goal scorers.

There were also two exhibition games which resulted in Guinness Bar beating Oasis Taxi 3-0 and Banks DIH outplaying the Media team 2-0.

Dennis Edwards with a double and Steve Bacchus with a single strike accounted for Guinness Bar’s goals, while Leroy Lindey and Moses were on target for Banks DIH. The semi-finals between Victoria Church Yard United and Back Circle and Silent Assassins versus Plaisance were slated for Monday evening. Two exhibition games were also carded for the evening.

The winner will receive $400,000, runnerup $250,000, third place $150,000 and fourth $75,000.

The champion team will also represent Guyana at the second annual Guinness Street Challenge scheduled for June 21-23 in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

niversal DVD Berbice Titans proved they are the best T20 team in Guyana with a four-wicket win over Georgetown Lions in the final of the second annual Independence T20 cup on Sunday night.

Organised by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and the Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA), the Titans reached 185-6 in reply to Georgetown Lions 184-6, with two overs to spare as they were watched by a colourful crowd in overcast conditions at the Albion Sports Complex ground.

What looked like a formidable total set by the Georgetown Lions, slipped away from the first over bowled by national pacer Paul Wintz, who sent down 13 deliveries inclusive of four wides and three noballs.

Former West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon and the youthful Shimron Hetmyer continued the assault, hitting 19 runs in the second over bowled by Shaqueel Williams. The pair scored 72 in just 4.4 overs before both fell in quick succession.

Chattergoon made 25, which was decorated with two fours and two sixes and Hetmyer clobbered three sixes and two fours in his cameo 33.

Already with a solid foundation and with the conditions ideal for batting, the Berbicians received support from Assad Fudadin who made 28 (2x4, 2x6), Gajanand Singh, 27 (2x4, 3x6), Jonathan Foo, 20 (3x4) and Rajiv Ivan, 19 not out (3x4). Bowling for the Georgetown Lions, skipper Leon Johnson was the best bowler with three wickets.

Earlier, the Lions rode on the resuscitation of a 109-run sixth wicket partnership between Chanderpaul Hemraj and Derwin Christian after they were left tottering at 47-5.

Both batsmen provided respectability to the score with Hemraj hitting an unbeaten 65 not out (4x4, 5x6,) and Christian, 61 (4x4, 5x6).

Bowling for the Titans, Keon Joseph, Eon Hooper, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Veersammy Permaul and Davendra Bishoo all claimed a wicket apiece.

Earlier the Titans defeated fellow Berbice team, Karibee Rice Boys by nine wickets.

Karibee Boys reached

92-8 in 15 overs with Kandasammy Surujnarine hitting a topscore of 34. In reply the Titans reached to 97-1 with Chattergoon hammering an unbeaten 65.

Fudadin finished on 29 not out.

In the other semi-final Georgetown Lions hammered BK International East Coast Jaguars by eight wickets. Jaguars batted first and made 102-4 with Anthony Ifill topscoring with 33. The Lions in reply roared to 108-2 off 8.5 overs with Christopher Barnwell smashing 49 (6x6) and Andrew Lyte Jr, 37.

Meanwhile, at the presentation ceremony the Titans were presented with the winning trophy and $300,000.

The Georgetown Lions copped $150,000 and the runner-up trophy. Players and officials from both teams also received medals. The two losing semi-finalists also received monetary prizes and trophies.

Additional prizes went to Hemraj, who scored the most runs in the final, Johnson, for the best bowler while Hetmyer received an award for being the youngest player on show.

The tournament was held to coincide with Guyana’s 47th Independence Anniversary.

Blake targets three Windies hit the ground gold medals running at Cardiff camp

ARDIFF, Wales – West Indies continued their preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy with a full training session on Monday, the day after arriving in Wales.

The squad, under the guidance of Coach Ottis Gibson, went through their drills at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff – where they will face Australia in their first official warm-up match on Saturday.

Gibson has been at the helm for over three years and said one of the keys to success in this tournament is proper preparation. The 44-year-old is familiar with conditions in Wales, having played for Glamorgan in the English County circuit in the 1990s.

Looking ahead to the tournament he said: “It is who gets settled quickly enough or who gets used to the conditions quickly enough that will do well.

That can then have a major say, as well, and that’s what our aim is... to get ourselves acclimatised as quickly as possible. It is all about gel-

ling as quickly as we can to ensure that when the main event comes on June 7, that we are ready for them.”

Gibson added: “Getting out of the group is our first challenge and getting to the semi-finals, and then our aim is to be playing on the 23rd of June in the finals. I think we have a pretty good record in finals.”

West Indies held a camp at the Sagicor High Performance Centre in Barbados last week before they travelled to Wales, where they have another camp this week.

The ICC Champions Trophy will feature eight teams: Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies.

The tournament will be played across three venues – Cardiff Wales Stadium, Edgbaston and The Oval – from June 6-23.

The Windies have been drawn in Group B alongside the Indians, the Pakistanis and the South Africans.

They open against Pakistan on Friday, June 7 at the

Oval and return to the famous venue on Tuesday, June 11 to take on India.

The final preliminary match will be against the Proteas on Friday, June 14 in Cardiff.

West Indies won the ICC Champions trophy back in 2004 – when Brian Lara’s team beat England in the final at the Oval. Several members of that squad, including skipper Dwayne Bravo will play in the upcoming tournament.

Gibson said the sensational victory in the ICC World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka last October has given the team great confidence.

“Winning major events gives the confidence. There will be some pressure of course, but the fact that we have won the last major event means that we get confidence from it also, and there is a lot of belief amongst the players,” Gibson said.

The West Indies will have another training session at the Swalec Stadium today from 14:00h.

I N G S T O N , Jamaica – World 100m champion Yohan Blake says his main goal this season is to win three gold medals at the World Championship in Moscow from August 10 to 18.

The double Olympic sprint silver medallist and second-fastest man ever in both the 100m and 200m says his goal includes retaining his world title.

“My big goal this year is to retain my title at the World Championships and to win three gold medals there,” Blake told Swedish media outlet SVTplay.se .

“I have told myself that this year I am going to be an alien because I want to invade; I want to take over the world”.

Blake capitalised on a Usain Bolt disqualification in the final of the 100m at the last instalment of the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, winning the gold medal ahead of Walter Dix of the USA and veteran Kittitian Kim Collins.

to post a personal best of 19.26 in the 200m.

He enjoyed a stellar 2012 after beating Bolt twice at the national trials, before picking up silver medals in the 100m and 200m at the London Olympics and running the third leg on Jamaica’s record-smashing 4x100m relay team.

“When I retain my title and become a world champion for the second time, I think that will be a good season”, Blake boasted.

Only two others have managed to win successive 100m gold medals at the

World Championships.

American Carl Lewis won three consecutive titles in 1983 (Helsinki), 1987 (Rome) and 1991 (Tokyo), while his compatriot Maurice Greene also boasts a three-peat with wins in 1997 (Athens), 1999 (Seville) and 2001 (Edmonton).

“I can be more than historic because I know what I can do,” the Jamaican sprinter declared.
