Between Cognac and Africa Chairs The exhibition of results of the workshop by Finnish designers Rudi Merz and Peter Schmid June 2016
“Nectar Gallery” has initiated wood processing and design workshop of Finnish designers Rudy Merz and Peter Schmid and as a result of an open call it brought together a group of visual artists, architects and designers of various experiences and generations. The first round of the study program took place in October 2015. It focused on selection and processing of wood material. At the same time participants and leaders of the course agreed on the topics of the program and developed the concept of the final exhibition. Since the wood needed to dry it was decided to schedule the second part of the program for May and June 2016. During the second phase each of participants produced sketches of chair design. Later Rudy Merz and Peter Schmid worked on the refinement of the suggested ideas. Thanks to simple equipment that was acquired for the project the “Nectar Gallery” turned into an improvised woodwork atelier where participants produced ten prototypes during a period of five weeks. gallerynectar.ge

It is not easy to translate into English the Italian word autoprogettazione. Literally it means auto = self and progettazione = design. But the term ‘self-design’ is misleading since the word ‘design’ to the general public now signifies a series of superficially decorative objects. By the word autoprogettazione Enzo Mari means an exercise to be carried out individually to improve one’s personal understanding of the sincerity behind the project. To make this possible you are guided through an archetypal and very simple technique. Therefore the end product, although usable, is only important because of its educational value. A project for making easy-to-assemble furniture using rough boards and nails. An elementary technique to teach anyone to look at present production with a critical eye. The first edition of the book was compiled by the Duchamp Centre and printe for the exhibition at the Galleria Milano in 1974.

A Practice 14.05-04.06 2016
Gallery Nectar initiated open competition for involvement into the wood processing and design workshops by Finnish designers: Peter Schmid and Rudi Mertz. As a result of a competition the group of visual artists, architects, designers of varied experiences and generation has been created. An exhibition “practice precedes the second part of the workshop series. The exhibition is an experiment that creates an unexpected combination of the specific work processes and experiences of the participants and provides the visitors with general and the same time very specific information. The exhibition presents sketches, ready products, parts of design objects, fragments of materials, which lose their initial function and transform into art objects in a gallery space. gallerynectar.ge
