Fostering for Independent Animal Rescue article and illustration by Emily Eve Weinstein

HE BEAUTIFUL TORTIE SISTERS were scheduled to arrive at my foster home just in time for the cover of this issue of Heart2Home Magazine! A dream come true after years of my designing posters and business cards, running ads, and in general turning myself inside out over the challenge of placing older cats. I was thrilled to land the cover. However, at the last possible moment I was told it was not going to work. Their soon to be exfoster parent was moving, and to attempt photographing adult cats at a brand-new location produces useless results. Normally Deb, Independent Animal Rescue’s intake person for adult cats, has three to twenty cats needing somewhere to go. Currently she had none. The sisters would need somewhere to go in a week, and this longawaited opportunity was about to fly now! It was suggested that Joan Hanley, foster extraordinaire, would be delighted to see one of her current six borders be featured. Joan’s fosters are mostly turned ferals. People that do trap-neuterrelease are special heroes in the animal rescue business. This has been where IAR has really excelled, spay-

ing/neutering over 1,200 cats in feral colonies this past year alone. Joan takes the hard-luck cats that are reasonably friendly and turns them into great pets. If you visit animalrescue.net and go to Adoptable Cats, you will find Violet; mother/daughter team, Roxy and Kiki; the bonded siblings, Daphney and Brutus; and Toby. What all these cats have in common is that from fending for themselves they have adjusted very well to indoor life at Joan’s. The reason I am not mentioning the names of my foster tortie sisters is I have not yet met them, but their links are: animalrescue.net/C-07-300R animalrescue.net/C-07-299R By the time this edition of Heart2Home is printed they will be ready to meet their public and their permanent homes! Kody (Dakota), whom I have met, is a mellow, human-oriented, aqua-eyed doubleginger: animalrescue.net/C-12-221 Please do consider adopting a couple of adult cats this spring. Editor’s note: For all the hard work Emily does for IAR and H2H, we will surely find her cover!

Independent Animal Rescue IAR WAS FOUNDED IN 1994 and is governed by a Board of Directors, managed by elected officers, and supported by over 100 unpaid volunteers. With no paid positions, 100% of all donations directly support animal care and rehabilitation.

IARʼs mission is to rescue and provide safe and responsible care for homeless, abandoned, and abused animals. IAR focuses on animal overpopulation and abandonment with a four-pronged approach: (1) Rescue and adoption of unwanted and abused animals; (2) funding of spay/neuter; (3) education and outreach of animal welfare to the youngest members of the community; (4) legislation and lobbying efforts on behalf of animals. Aphrodite

is a unique little puppy. She is glossy, glossy black, with gray markings on her face, chest, and other little accent parts on her body. Sheʼs simply stunning. Aphrodite was the last puppy born in her litter of seven on February 21, 2013. The pups are beginning to show personalities and Aphrodite is at the head of the pack with walking and standing. Aphrodite is quiet, but, she has a cute little bark.

Cocoa

is a very fast learner. In just two weeks she has learned the commands sit, shake, stay, and drop! Sheʼs a playful puppy that would love a fenced yard to play her favorite game of fetch. She would be a great pet for a family with children that enjoy throwing tennis balls, playing tug, or roughhousing. Cocoa is really great on a leash and never pulls. Cocoa also loves treats – a great training perk!

Beijo is a medium sized,

very handsome, stocky, fit and energetic dog. He is very sweet and loving, playful, smart and eager to please.

www animalrescue net

Brook

is a beautiful, petite patchwork of orange and grey tabby on a backdrop of white. She tends to resemble a bobcat in her stature and squareness of her face. Sheʼs got tiny little features and is truly cute as a button. She is a kitten with two settings: “on” and “full throttle.” An incredibly curious and playful kitten, she loves anything that might resemble a toy and is always inviting a tussle with her brothers and sisters. It is hard not to rave wildly about him – that is how WONDERFUL he is! He is one of the most loving cats we have ever had the pleasure to rescue. PT gives full-on hugs with his paws around your neck and his little nose giving you nose kisses. He is also a “Champion Head Bumper” which makes him a little hard to photograph since he is always trying to head bump the camera too!

Puddy Tat:

Winslow

is extremely, intelligent, curious and funloving. He loves children and loves to play. Because heʼs so smart he constantly likes to learn new fun tricks to show off.

Wheat-Free Turkey Treats

OU HEAR A LOT about food allergies in humans these days, but what about food allergies in our pets? Have you ever given thought that what your dog is ingesting may be causing Fido to scratch more than usual? Even though allergy and grain free dog treats are becoming more widely available, they can still be hard to find and/or expensive. I’ve found a great website, dogtreatkitchen.com, which features a section on allergy-free dog treats. Depending on the grain your pooch is allergic to, you may choose a dog treat recipe specifically baked for your Susan Graff dog with allergies. In this issue I feature one of the wheat-free recipes my own dogs enjoy. They are Wheat-Free Turkey Treats, but you can make most dog treat recipes wheat free by substituting the wheat flour with oat flour, rice flour, or any other wheat free flour. Bone Appetite!

Wheat-Free Turkey Treats (dogtreatkitchen.com)

Ingredients: 1 cup oat flour* 1 cup cornmeal 1/2 tsp dried sage 1/4 tsp baking powder

1- 5 oz. can of flaked turkey** 1/4 cup canola oil 2/3 cup water Additional flour for rolling

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350o F. In a large bowl, whisk

together the flour, cornmeal, sage, and baking powder. In a food processor, puree the canned turkey and scoop into a small bowl. Next, stir in the canola oil and water into the pureed turkey until thoroughly combined. Make a well in the flour mixture and pour in the turkey mixture. Knead with your hands in the bowl to create a smooth dough ball. Turn onto a lightly floured surface, knead more if needed, and roll out to 1/4-inch thickness. Lightly spray a baking sheet with cooking spray and place cutouts on the sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack. Using a 2-inch cookie cutter, this recipe yielded 2 dozen dog cookies. They will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for 4 months.

* You can make your own oat flour if you don’t normally keep it in your pantry. Take a heaping cup of rolled oats, and grind them into a powder, using a food processor. You want to start with more rolled oats than the final measurement you need, just to be safe that you will have the correct amount. * * These homemade wheat free dog treats are very versatile. You can substitute a 5-ounce can of tuna, salmon, or chicken instead of the canned turkey. If you use canned turkey (or another variation) in oil, you may need to reduce the amount of canola oil you use. Start with half the amount, and add as needed.

paw print ... triangle animal news Governor Pat McCrory has proclaimed 2013 YEAR OF THE VETERINARIAN IN NORTH CAROLINA. The proclamation commends citizen observance of veterinarians’ impact on the health and safety of animals and humans. The state joined The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association in recognizing veterinarians’ dedication to preserving the human-animal bond and promoting the highest standards of science-based, ethical animal welfare. The proclamation states that veterinarians play a vital role in protecting the quality and security of our nation’s herds and food supply. This year marks the 150th anniversary of organized veterinary medicine in the United States. . . . A BILL WORKING ITS WAY THROUGH the Montana legislature would make it legal to scavenge game found dead on the highway, take it home, and cook it for dinner. Eating roadkill is already legal in Alaska, Wisconsin, New York, Florida, West Virginia and Illinois. In Alaska, roadkill is routinely donated to soup kitchens. PETA, which opposes most forms of hunting, has pushed states to adopt “roadkill salvage” legislation. The cattle industry in Montana is opposing the law, citing the lack of regulation for salvaged meat. But according to Benjamin Chapman, a food safety specialist with NC State, in a recent ABC News story, “The risk is relative depending on the condition of the animal and how it was killed.” Chapman indicated that unless you see signs of spoilage, cooking meat to an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees should eliminate any chance of illness. . . . THE N.C. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND CONSUMER SERVICES ANIMAL WELFARE SECTION has reimbursed counties more than a half million dollars for spay/neuter procedures for pets belonging to low-income residents in NC in 2012. The money was partially funded by fees collected from North Carolina’s Animal Lovers specialty license plates. The department paid 28 counties $550,235 of nearly $562,500 requested for 9,529 surgeries. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler, whose retriever Kate is fixed, stated, “Fixing cats and dogs is the best solution to the pet overpopulation problem in North Carolina. If you want to help with the problem, consider an Animal Lovers license plate.” According to the N.C. Veterinary Medical Assoc., spaying or neutering decreases the risk of cancer in dogs and cats, decreases aggressive behaviors and eliminates most urine marking. . . . PHYDEAUX’s pet supply store in Chapel Hill is expanding to create a nearly 15,000-sq ft store. The store is expanding into the space previously occupied by The Lighting Café at the Galleria Shopping Center, 400 S. Elliott Road. Phydeaux first opened in downtown Carrboro in 2002, moved to its Chapel Hill location in 2008 and opened in Raleigh in 2010. . . . A NORTH CAROLINA TATTOO ARTIST is at the center of outrage from animal lovers all over the U.S. after he inked his 5month-old purebred American Pit Bull, Duchess, in his basement tattoo parlor in Pinnacle, NC. When Ernesto Rodriguez posted pictures of the tattoo on his dog’s stomach on Facebook he received a storm of criticism, complaint and cries of animal cruelty. He claims the tattoo can be used for identification and compares it to branding farm animals. An investigator with the state veterinary medical board stated that tattooing a pet is not illegal unless it can be construed as animal cruelty. Rodriguez claims that his pet was anesthetized and “didn't feel anything.” The local health department has issued Rodriguez a cease and desist order stating that he stops tattooing until he receives proper zoning permits. SOUND PET ANIMAL RESCUE

Mahoney: I just had surgery

and I did awesome. I am great on just three legs now and my foster mom says I am the smartest puppy in the world. I am crate trained and sleep there all night without a sound. I am almost house trained and love toys and playing. I just need a committed family to teach me all the things I need to know. I already know “sit. See, I am smart!

O’Malley:

I was taken into custody due to abuse and cruelty from my former owner, but I am still super sweet and very loving. I am the typical puppy in that I love to play with other dogs and chew on toys. My picture shows me wearing a splint but I am all good now and my elbow is awesome so that means I am ready for a loving home of my own!

Bruiser:

I am an older, overweight Yorkie that is in a great foster home. I am a companion dog and want a family to hang out with. I like doing what you do! I donʟt have to sleep in your bed but I would love it if you would let me. I currently sleep in a laundry basket in my foster parentʟs room. I love it – I am not so happy about a crate but give me a laundry basket any day!

Curtis: Have you ever seen

an Italian Greyhound Pit Bull Mix? Sounds like a crazy mix, but that is what everyone thinks I am. I have the head shape of a Pit, but the body of an Italian Greyhound. I am six-months old and may get a tiny bit bigger, but will still be a small dog under 25 pounds. While I can be a bit timid at first introduction, I am quite social.

Owen:

I am an old country dog that ended up at the county pound. I was rescued just in time – 20 minutes later and I wouldnʟt have been there to rescue! My foster mom thinks Iʟm handsome but when I walk she giggles because I am bowlegged in front and pigeon toed in back. I am a full grown big dog on small dog legs. I get along with dogs, and great with cats and kids.

Max: I am brand new to the res-

cue and I am a typical puppy. I need to learn everything there is to life! I am just 12-weeks old but IĘźm going to be a very big boy according to the vets. I am proving to be a great little boy. I sleep all night in a crate and I am doing fantastic on my home training. If you are looking for a puppy that is super handsome and will grow into a big boy come on and visit!

SECOND CHANCE PET ADOPTIONS

Cambria is quiet, gentle,

and affectionate. She would be best in a home without other pets only because she stresses, but not because she is mean. If her home has children, older ones would be best, since young kids might be a bit much for her. She loves nothing more than to share your lap and a good head scratch. Cambria would make a lovely addition to your home.

Kaylee : Iʼm a beautiful, ener-

getic, intelligent and resilient puppy who is looking for an amazing home to call my own. I went from homeless and injured to being in a loving foster home and having my back right leg amputated. Now I can play as hard as I want and I donʼt hurt afterward. I like to spend my free time playing with my stuffed squeaky toys and my Nylabones.

Charlie is a lazy hound dog

with the sweetest droopy eyes. While Charlie doesnʼt really play with toys, he does love a bone and will carry it around the house with him. Charlie would love a family that will play chase with him every now and then, and take him for a nice stroll so he can discover all of the new smells outside, but also understand that he is a true couch potato at heart.

www secondchancenc org

Max:

Are you looking to adopt a big boy with a big smile? Meet Max! He is super friendly and does well with dogs, cats and kids – though he can be clumsy around toddlers. He loves to play with Kongs, squeaky toys; and to play outside with a tennis ball. At the end of the day, he loves nothing more than to curl up on the couch and enjoy a good belly rub.

April

is a beautiful girl with a sassy attitude. She takes a little while to learn to trust and will need a nice quiet home where she can have her own space. She would do best with a buddy to have wrestling matches with and then curl up together for an afternoon nap. She has excellent litter box manners and uses the scratching post like a champ. Please take a chance on this little girl.

Loverboy

is one of the sweetest cats we have known. He is great with other cats, dogs and even kids. He is extremely affectionate and loves belly rubs. Itʼs hard to imagine that anyone would cast him aside, but he came to us as a stray with no owner. Please come meet this fantastic kitty – he would be a great addition to just about any home.

Adopt? Why Not! I

F YOU ARE READY TO MAKE the commitment for a pet, your first step should be checking out the local animal shelters and rescue groups for your new friend. But if you have never been to a shelter or contacted a rescue group, what should you expect and what should you do? Most of the shelters and rescue groups in the Triangle have a web site with their adoptable animals listed with photos and information. If you don’t have a specific group or shelter in mind, it would take a long time to search all those groups one web site after another. The solution is to visit petfinder.com where available animals in the Triangle area and all across the country are listed from thousands of groups and shelters. Before long you should be making a trip or setting up a meeting to visit your prospective new pet. Here is a short guide to help you with the process and find your forever friend.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SHELTER AND A RESCUE GROUP? Animal Shelters are usually run by the counties surrounding where you live. In some cases these shelters are run in partnership with a non-profit group that oversees the facility and adoption process. Animal shelters are staffed by animal control officers, kennel attendants, medical staff and are usually supported by volunteers. These shelters respond to calls of stray or abandoned animals and must accept any animal that enters the shelter as a stray or an owner surrender. A Rescue Group transfers pets from shelters and houses them at their facility or through their foster network. Rescue groups are plentiful in the Triangle and there are several in the surrounding counties. You can find a rescue organization for just about every breed of dog, cat, and all kinds of animals big and small. If a group does not have a facility where you can visit, the best way to view an adoptable pet through a rescue group is to visit their website to see their adoptable pets and attend their adoption events in the community. Local SPCA groups also run non-profit shelters that are typically funded through donations and grants. SPCAs are staffed with kennel attendants, medical staff, adoption counselors and may even have dog trainers and behaviorists. All groups rely heavily on volunteers.

WHAT DOES NO-KILL SHELTER MEAN? Very simply, the shelters that are run by county or city governments, since they are engaged directly in the job of animal control, will, in most cases, euthanize (kill) pets that they identify as sick, unadoptable, or they just do not have room to house for long periods of time. This is where the rescue groups and independent shelters step up to take on some of these animals and work to find them homes. Most rescue groups are pledged as no-kill organiza-

A great way to meet different pets, their owners, and many rescue groups is to attend one of the many adoption events, dog walks, and family pet days scheduled throughout the summer months in the Triangle. photo by brian less tions, meaning they only try to find homes for the pets in their care and do not have facilities for or undertake euthanizing animals. The nokill movement is very active across the country and works diligently to educate shelters and groups to become no-kill organizations.

IS IT BETTER TO ADOPT FROM A KILL SHELTER OR A NO-KILL GROUP? In the big picture, adopting an animal from any of these groups is a good thing. If you adopt from a kill shelter, another animal can be taken into their adoption program. When you adopt

from a rescue shelter or foster group, those groups can pull another adoptable animal out of a kill shelter.

SO WHAT TO DO NOW? Start making plans to adopt your new best friend today of course!

DID YOU KNOW ? Some shelters and groups only take in felines and canines, but many shelters have fish, gerbils, hamsters, and rabbits for adoption. There are all ages of animals ready for adoption from kittens to cats and puppies to dogs. The Humane Society of the United States reports that purebreds account for 25 to 30 percent of the rescue dog population. Adoption groups will help with vaccines and deworming, and in many cases, will provide low-cost spaying or neutering services. These are usually part of the adoption process and fee. Not all shelters or rescue groups have the same fees but fees for adoption are lower than purchasing an animal from a breeder or a pet store. Shelters help people find the perfect pet match. Many groups offer adoption counseling and dog training courses. Pets boost an owner’s health and well-being. Blood pressure and cholesterol levels are known to be lowered just by spending time with an animal. Dog walking or play time at the doggie park give both you and your pet an extra dose of exercise. Approximately three to four million dogs and cats are euthanized each year according to The Human Society of the United States.

SAFE Haven Cat Shelter & Clinic

Tierona: Doggone it!

You canʼt see my amazing little bobtail in this picture but you will when you visit! I was born with it and am so proud of it. Itʼs just one of my many interesting characteristics. Iʼm curious, like to talk a bit, and once I get to know you a little, Iʼll hop right into your lap.

Tiza:

Iʼm cute, curious, loving and donʼt miss a trick. If visitors are around, I want to meet them so youʼll see me peeking from my cage and asking you to notice me, stop a while, and then decide Iʼm the one youʼll be taking home! If thereʼs a toy being flicked around in a nearby playroom, I come to attention: I want to play, too!

Pilar: Check out my photo

Eagle: This eagle will quick-

and I hope youʼre not going to be able to resist meeting me. I put on my most engaging expression. Iʼm a plucky little orange tabby tuxedo teen whoʼs shy right now, but sure to have an awesome personality with patience and just a little bit of time.

Mizuno: When you

hear Mizuno, you probably think sports, athletics, speed. A good name for a sleek cat with the coat of a panther and the heart of a lion. My golden eyes take in everything around me and will be watching for that special one whoʼll give me a home.

ly land a place in youʼre heart. Who can resist a cat in a black and white tuxedo coat with a dab of black on his chin? Come meet me and play with me for a while and I promise your spirits will soar.

Delmar va:

And a marvel I am! Iʼm an exceedingly good-looking mackerel Tabby whoʼs not only smart but also very, very nice. I came here with Scranton, my very best buddy, and we are hoping that just the right person with room for two walks through the door so that we can live together always.
