I enjoy running and playing in the backyard with my two canine foster brothers and I like to play in the house where I have wonderful manners even when I just lay around with the kids. I do well with kids of all ages and I’m all set with house and crate training. I think I would be a great running partner so I would love to have a family that would take me on runs. He weighs around 55 lbs., is a wonderful companion and has a weakness for blueberry muffins. Finn is neutered, microchipped, and current on vaccinations. (Photo: Charlene Fetherolf)

Sasha & Maurice

Both are young, We would love to place them into a home together so they can maintain the strong bond that they have.

Bella Bee is a

CJ is a senior boy at 10 years

Beagle/Shepherd mix, born in mid-February. She has been bounced around a bit and is looking for a permanent home. She is good in the house and with children and other dogs. She needs love, consistency and training that all puppies need. She is a medium-sized, spayed, microchipped, and up to date on shots. (Photo: Charlene Fetherolf)

CALVIN’S PAWS www.calvinspaws.org Charlotte (racing kitty seeks permanent pit stop): Charlotte is one year old and loves to get on the ground to romp and play with her kittens. She is a long and lean Abyssinian mix. She loves other animals, snuggling on her human’s lap and to be held and carried around but like her name, is fast and corners well when she plays.

Deacon Blues:

Get the Named after a Steely Dan song, this boy and his identical brother are one year old and they epitomize the Russian Blue. Although they can be shy initially, they are gorgeous, smart, intuitive boys who will fill your home with antics and purring.

Ashby (the gorgeous): Ashby is actually a boy and came to me in a mixed litter of five in September 2009. He was the tiniest and had a hard time keeping up, but he was determined. I hand fed him for weeks, not knowing if he would even thrive. Today he is the biggest of the three boys. He had a real “ugly duckling” stage, but transformed into the beauty he is today.

919-616-2997

Kevin Sorbo

(single dad seeks retirement home): was named after Hercules. He is a Maine Coon mix, two-yearold gentle big guy who has helped raise litters of shy kittens by nurturing them and making them sweet and loving like himself. If there is an available lap, this boy is on it. He’s great with other cats and keeps kittens and dogs in line.

Bernadette: My name is Bernadette and I have a brother, Howard (yes we are named after characters in the Big Bang Theory TV show). We were found as newborns with no mom. We were bottle fed and then bonded with Kevin Sorbo. He’s been like our dad and taught us to love everyone. We love attention and are curious and sweet.

Abby & Ninja (double the magic): Abby is short for Abracadabra, and is full of tricks and life. These siblings were pulled from a high kill shelter and had a rough start but are now sociable and happy, healthy kittens. They are the purrfect purr partners and love to play. Half of the adoption fee is sponsored if Abby and Ninja are adopted together.

Tails in the Kitchen Crispy Liver Treats E HAVE ENTERED the time of year where families gather for holiday dinners and when a whole chicken or turkey is on the menu, you have the makings of some holiday pet treats. You may notice that the chicken or turkey’s liver, also known as gizzards, are packaged along with the bird. If you are not sure what to do with these, why not use them as ingredients for dog and cat treats?

W

Most dogs love liver treats because of the strong smell. Anything your dog goes crazy about makes a great reward for good behavior or a special treat. Even though dogs love liver Susan Graff treats, they shouldn’t have too many. The treats are very rich so they are ideal for using as a special reward. This recipe comes from the website, justapinch.com and is actually a recipe for cat treats. So, I create the “morsel”size (about 1/4”) for cats and a bigger size (about 1/2”) for the pups.

Crispy Liver Morsels (fromjustapinch.com)

Ingredients: 1/2 c. of cooked chicken or turkey livers 1/4 c. of water 1 1/4 c. whole wheat flour 1/4 c. cooked carrot, mashed 1 tablespoon of softened butter or margarine Instructions: Preheat the oven to 325ºF. Place well-done livers in a blender with 1/4 cup water. In a bowl, mix flour and butter. Add liver mixture and carrots and knead dough into a ball. Roll dough to 1/4-inch thick and cut into 1/4-inch pieces for cat treats. (Roll dough to 1/2-inch thick and cut into 1/2-inch pieces for dog treats.) Place treats on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 325ºF for 10 minutes. Susan Graff is the owner of Whole Lotta Love Dog Walking and Pet Services www.awholelottalovedogwalking.com

Ask Willie Hodge Dear Willie: I am a new cat owner and have heard

that Christmas trees can be a problem for cats. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can make our family Christmas tree as safe as possible for our new cat?

paw print

... triangle animal news

THE PAWS4EVER RESALE STORE is ready for you and the holidays at a new location in Hillsborough. The new store is open for browsing and donations Thursday and Friday from 116; Saturday from 10-5; Sunday from 1-5 at 111 Antique Street. ...

Willie thinks this is an excellent question as the holiday Christmas tree is one of a cat’s biggest temptations. Willie suggests you consider safely securing your tree to a window or wall to prevent it falling. Much to Willie’s dismay is the fact that all of the more fragile ornaments are placed higher in the tree to prevent broken ornaments and injuries. Willie has learned over the years that eating pine needles can cause mouth and stomach irritation and has noticed that his Willie Hodge mom avoids hanging tinsel or stringing real food on the tree to avoid choking and intestinal obstructions. Willie also makes sure his feline brothers and sisters do not chew on electrical cords. Willie advises you to keep decorative lights unplugged when you are not home, use pet-proof extension cords when possible, and spray cords with Bitter Apple to keep your cat from chewing on them. Finally, Willie recommends attempting to cover the tree stand in order to prevent your cat from drinking stagnant water which can cause an upset stomach.

THE ANNUAL POSSUM DROP, a 21-year New Year’s tradition in Brasstown, NC has been suspended due to a judge’s order. The Times Square-style event, involves a plexiglass cage, tinsel and a 10-second drop of a possum to count down to the New Year. The revelers, grown from family to over 2,000, have welcomed the New Year with the possum drop for more than two decades on Old Hwy 64, not far from both Tennessee and South Carolina. PETA brought suit against the NC Wildlife Resources Commission saying the permit was illegal and the event was cruelty despite insistence that the possum is well fed, cared for and released to the wild after the gatherings. Judge Fred Morrison wrote in his ruling: “Citizens are prohibited from capturing and using wild animals for pets or amusement ... Hunters must afford wild animals the same right Patrick Henry yearned for: ‘Give me liberty, or give me death!’” Event organizer Clay Logan of the Logan General Store says he hopes to carry on the tradition without breaking the law. The Wildlife Commission has until mid December to appeal. ...

Dear Willie: Is it ok to feed our cat holiday leftovers? A: Willie got very excited to see your question and his

BUTTERBALL TURKEY FARMS has once again allegedly rolled in front of a vegan rights group Mercy For Animals’ hidden camera showing unfathomable and unforgivable behavior against turkeys at a Butterball farm in Shannon, NC. In 2011 the same group caught the same footage at the same facility resulting in two employees pleading guilty to cruelty to animal charges. Butterball, who accounts for 20 percent of U.S. turkey production and runs the world’s largest turkey plant in Mt. Olive, NC., has a “zero tolerance policy for animal abuse.” ...

initial response was going to be YES, YES, YES since Willie loves to eat. However, once Willie’s sound mind returned, he realized that sometimes holiday leftovers can pose a problem to feline family members. Most importantly, according to Willie, is that you DO NOT feed your cat anything with onions, garlic, leeks, scallions, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, xylitol, or alcohol which are all toxic to cats and will make them very sick. In addition, Willie advises you to avoid food items that knowingly upset your cat’s stomach and try not to overload your cat with a lot of food items that he or she has never been exposed to before.

Dear Willie:

I would love to have a poinsettia plant this holiday, but I have heard that they are poisonous to cats. Is this true?

A:

Willie gets this question asked to him every holiday season. Contrary to what most people think, poinsettias are not the deadly flowers that popular legend has made them out to be. From what Willie has read, Joel Robert Poinsett, the U. S. Ambassador to Mexico, brought poinsettias to the United States from Mexico in the 1820’s. The toxicity myth began in the early part of the 20th century when a two-year-old child of a United States officer was alleged to have died from consuming a poinsettia leaf. In reality, poinsettia ingestion typically produce only mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation even in pets, which may include drooling, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Willie believes keeping this plant out of reach is still a good idea, but Willie has learned that you don’t need to banish the poinsettia for fear of a fatal exposure. Willie answers all questions with the help of his mom, Dr. Jenn, owner of the Cat Clinic of Cary. You can follow Willie’s daily adventures more closely on Facebook.

Right before the holidays WRAL aired a story about the MONTGOMERY COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER and its highest kill rate in the state last year – with 1,200 euthanizations – a 100 percent kill rate for cats and 98 percent for dogs. It is difficult to wish and pray that away. It total, nearly 225,000 dogs and cats were euthanized at public shelters in North Carolina last year and 10,411 pets lose their lives in U.S. animal shelters every day. North Carolina’s 2011 county records for public animal shelters show four more counties above the 90 percent kill rate. And just more and more numbers from 2011: Durham Co operated on $835,085 with a $129.76 per animal cost. Of 3,565 dogs the kill rate was 61 percent; and of 2,484 cats the kill rate was 77 percent. Chatham Co operated on $579.096 with a $279.76 per animal cost. Of 1,057 dogs the kill rate was 51 percent; and of 982 cats the kill rate was 86 percent. Orange Co operated on $844,780 with a $235.97 per animal cost. Of 1,886 dogs the kill rate was 36 percent; and of 1,438 cats the kill rate was 45 percent. Wake Co operated on $1,689,608 with a $102.89 per animal cost. Of 7,889 dogs the kill rate was 31 percent; and of 7,713 cats the kill rate was 68 percent. send: news@heart2homemagazine
