LETTER FROM EDITOR Dear Readers, Encouraged by the success of direct-to-home (DTH) services in India, Pakistan Television Corporation Ltd, that country's national broadcaster, has invited national and international firms to help it set up its own DTH service with 100 channels. Once operational, this will be the first DTH service in Pakistan. The country has already witnessed a boom in its cable sector with over 60 active private cable channels launched in the recent past and several more in the pipeline — with most being news and entertainment channels. According to experts, setting up a DTH network from scratch involves an initial investment upwards of Rs 3,000 crore and thereafter an annual recurring expense of Rs 400-500 crore. “To the best of our knowledge, there are no competent firms in Pakistan that could undertake such a job so international participation in the venture is the only practical possibility,” a senior executive of a leading DTH firm said requesting anonymity. While Pakistan is yet to see a private or a stateowned DTH operator, the Indian market is buzzing with half-a-dozen DTH firms. The DTH segment has already cornered about 10 per cent of the cable subscribers but none of them is thinking about crossing over to the other side in order to expand its business. While several of the current Indian DTH firms are keeping an eye on PTVC's notice and even find the proposal attractive but have refrained from taking any decision on participation in the expression of interest (EoI) floated bythe PTVC recently.

CHINA SATELLITES

C

hina launched its first military communications satellite in January 2000 as part of a People's Liberation Army command-andcontrol network linking forces for combat. China will launch more high-technology space platforms, including even-higherresolution imagery satellites, electronic signals intelligence (SIGINT) satellites and military communications satellites. Today, however, Chinese satellite technology not only serves military purposes, but it serves many areas of the national economy. Future satellites will be especially useful in developing the remote western areas of China. Five year plan. China is planning to launch at least 35 different science and application satellites during the years 2002-2006, according to Xinhua News Agency. The satellites would be used for JANUARY

communications and direct-to-home broadcasting, meteorological and oceanographic observations, navigation and positioning, disaster mitigation, and seed breeding. They also plan to launch manned spacecraft. China has come a long way in space. In 2000, Beijing orbited its first highresolution electro-optical imaging satellite, which relays its state-of-the-art digital pictures by radio to ground stations. In the past, Chinese satellites snapped pictures on photographic film which then was dropped down to Earth in canisters. China launched Pakistan's first satellite to a 375-mi.-high circular orbit on July 16, 1990. The satellite, Badr-A, was launched aboard the maiden flight of the Long March 2E rocket from Xichang Launch Center in China. After 146 days in space, Badr-A fell into the atmosphere and burned.

Digital TV Receiver Tips Digital TV or “DTV is taking over as the preferred medium for broadcasters. In fact, within the next few years, all televisions will be required to switch from analog to Digital TV receivers. This is a tremendous opportunity for dropship sellers because in a nutshell, the folks who don't make the switch won't be able to watch television. So, that's a massive target market! Besides that, not many resellers are in this niche market yet. However, it can also be a huge risk as every part of the world doesn't have a DTV service, and there is still little information available about this new technology. For example, some people who have converted to DTV still have trouble getting a signal with their Digital TV receiver. There have been several reported fixes for this, including getting an external aerial, adjusting the external aerial and replacing an existing aerial with a stronger one. As you can imagine, this sort of thing could be a major headache for the reseller. On the other hand---no pain, no gain---and to get in on the ground floor of something that is going worldwide might well be worth the occasional headache. So, to avoid this problem, you would need to make yourself knowledgeable about which format JANUARY

works where and make sure to match customers with the proper format. To address the problem of no signal after conversion or a similar glitch, you could only stay abreast of current fixes and information on digital TV. Also, another very good idea is to always include the digital TV standard ATSC in the title of products offered for sale on eBay or other places you might get international buyers. This would go a long way toward avoiding problems! Digital TV is a hot niche market for a reseller who is willing to catch the wave and ride it to the top! Because most broadcast stations in all US television markets are already broadcasting in digital, consumers are further advised to contact their local broadcast stations to determine the channel numbers on which the stations are broadcasting digital programming. Consumers should then ensure that their televisions are set up to receive over-the-air programming (as distinguished from the signals of a paid provider such as cable or satellite TV service), and then tune to the over-the-air digital channels to see if they can receive the digital broadcast programming.

SignalClearingProblems Up The Static S

atellite customers do not want to lose any transmission signals-but it happens. The challenge facing service providers and equipment manufacturers is providing turnkey solutions to combat such problems. While certain signal glitches remain unfixable, others can be corrected. From rain fade issues to technical errors, satellite technology advancements are transporting more content through space without it being lost in space. Standing in the way of this delivery is interference. After all, at the core of any satellite business is signal delivery. If unsuccessful at getting voice, data and video transmitted to the client's destination, then those clients will not be expanding their business relations at contract renewal time. Regardless if caused by man or nature, interference can seriously diminish the power of a satellite transmission, or block it entirely. In either case, finding a way to "clear up the static" is important for satellite users, and a source of profit for equipment manufacturers and content distributors. Rain attenuation, solar energy and heavy static are examples of how Mother Nature can interfere with satellite transmissions. Attenuation, or rain fade as it is more commonly referred to, occurs when a passing electromagnetic wave gives up energy to the liquid in a raindrop. The loosely bound molecules of water absorb JANUARY

energy from the electromagnetic signals. Airborne water can reflect or absorb satellite transmissions and this rain fade is what causes many Ku-band DBS receives to go dark during heavy storms. On the ground, frozen water in the form of ice and

snow can collect inside a satellite antenna and attenuate its transmit/receive capabilities to nothing. To combat such obstacles posed by Mother Nature, manufacturers have brought to market equipment to thaw nature's chill. Even though rain fade is an unavoidable fact of satellite life, especially in more tropical regions of the world where torrential downpours more readily occur, snow and ice, however, can be managed. One such company fighting the elements is Surface Heating Systems Ltd. (SHS) out of the United Kingdom. SHS has designed an innovative de-icing system used by Andrew Corp. for its new 3.7m antenna. Think of a typical satellite transmission as a thin line in the sky. This line can be blocked on its way into space by a single interfering source.

ARAB SATELLITE TV

AD RATES LOW

Advertising rates are low in Arab satellite television due to the lack of a consistent rating system, according to the influential Arab Advisers Group, which believes, however, that ad rates have at last stabilized. Lack of a television rating system, the group said in a report, diminishes the bargaining power of TV stations. But on the brighter side, average advertising rates appear to have stabilized in the past two years after dropping off in 2005. "The average advertising rate for a free-to-air satellite TV channel in the Arab world in 2007 is $3,698 for a 30-second advertisement during peak time," it said in a report "Satellite TV Advertising Rates in the Arab World 2007." "In 2007, the rates of major channels appear to have stabilized: slightly above those of 2005 and below those of 2004," said Jawad Abbassi, Arab Advisers general manager. "This can be attributed to the fact that, although the number of FTA satellite TV channels in the region continues to increase dramatically, advertisers and channels alike are beginning to recognize that some popular channels grab the largest share of the viewer ship pie," Abbassi said in the

JANUARY

report. The report analyzed advertising rates across 14 free-to-air satellite TV channels. Average FTA Sat TV ad rates, it said, are at their highest ($3,698) between 9 pm and 10 pm, followed closely by the hour between 10 pm and 11 pm (Saudi Arabia time). "These rates are considerably higher than both their terrestrial and pay TV counterparts," the report said. News channels have the highest average FTA advertising rates in the region, while music channels have the lowest. The study compared satellite TV advertising rates across 14 FTA satellite TV -- Al Rai TV, Dubai TV, Future Television, LBC Sat, MBC1, Dubai One, MBC 4, MBC Action, Al Arabiya, Al Jazeera, Melody Hits, Rotana Clip, MBC 3 and Spacetoon Arabic. The first commercial DBS service in the United Kingdom, Sky Television, was launched in 1989 and used the newly launched ASTRA satellite, providing 4 analogue TV channels. The channels and subsequent VideoCrypt video encryption system used the existing PAL broadcast standard. This gave Sky a distinct advantage over the winner of the UK state DBS licence, BSB. In May 2008, a free-toair satellite service from the BBC and ITV was launched under the brand name Freesat, carrying a variety of channels, including some content in HD formats.

AN INTRIDUCTION TO FREESAT reesat is a joint venture in the UK between BBC and ITV television destined to be a satellite alternative to freeview. The advantages of Freesat over terrestrial television are in the number of channels and the quality of the broadcast.

F

The service launched to the public on May 6 2008. Upon launch, the available channels included all BBC and ITV channels (with the exception of ITV2+1), most of Channel 4s channels, as well as channels from broadcasters such as Euronews, CSC Media Group, Al Jazeera and Chello Zone. Copying its launch issues at the end of the last century, Channel Five was notably absent from the party, as were channels from MTV, BSkyB and UKTV. Currently, Freesat has 147 radio and television channels on its books. Although the adoption of more channels is going slightly slower than they had predicted, there are numerous more entertainment and music channels on the horizon. There are a number of channels broadcast on Freeview which Freesat does not have access to. These are (at the time of writing): JANUARY

Smile TV, Quest, Partyland, National Lottery Xtra and teleG. To get Freesat, you will need a satellite dish. If you don't already have one then you will be able to get one from any of the numerous satellite shops around the country. Installation of a satellite dish generally costs in the region of £80. Once you have your satellite dish installed, you will need a digital receiver box. These contraptions pick up the digital signal from the satellite and relay the picture to your television. They can cost anywhere from £50 to right up and over £800 and you generally do get what you pay for when it comes to features and quality. Features to look out for on your Freesat box are HD channels, Surround Sound, the ability to pause, rewind and record both HD and SD television programmes and interactive programme guides. Again, though, the more features you want, the more you will have to fork out. If all of this is very new and sounding a bit jargon-y to you, then you would be best to visit your nearest satellite TV specialists for a chat. Most places are very happy to point you in the right direction for your equipment and have demos so you can try before you buy.

Local Television of

Bangladesh

ne of the main types of broadcast media in Bangladesh is TV, namely: “Bangladesh Television. Bangladesh Television is the only terrestrial channel in the country. Several satellite TV stations have also made headway in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Television is a government owned TV station. Very few broadcasts contain information about the political opposition until the general elections become nearer and the government in power takes control. Bangladesh Television has been running since 1964 with the aim of improving the national culture with information, education, motivation and entertainment. Such programming allows viewers greater insight into world trends. It also recognizes and works to fulfill the country's needs. About 2 million televisions receive transmissions from the network's 17 relay stations. Most of the programs are locally produced mainly in Dhaka. Channel I runs 24 hours a day and launched the first digital Bangla channel in 1999. Since then it has grown in popularity as one of the best educational and entertainment TV channels in Bangladesh. This live Bangladeshi TV channel is mainly aimed at Bangla speaking individuals and provides programming that the entire family can

O

enjoy. One of the newer Bangladesh TV channels to come onto the scene is Bangla Vision. The objective of the private channel is to build up the nation by means of wholesome entertainment. Bangla Vision is determined not to be politically biased and to offer objective news. The original C-Band satellite TV systems used a Low Noise Amplifier connected to the feedhorn at the focal point of the dish. The amplified signal was then fed via very expensive 50 Ohm impedance coaxial cable to an indoor receiver or in other designs fed to a downconverter (a mixer and a voltage tuned oscillator with some filter circuitry) for downconversion to an intermediate frequency. The channel selection was controlled, typically by a voltage tuned oscillator with the tuning voltage being fed via a separate cable to the headend. But this simple design evolved. The satellite receiver demodulates and converts the signals to the desired form (outputs for television, audio, data, etc.). Sometimes, the receiver includes the capability to unscramble or decrypt; the receiver is then called an Integrated receiver/decoder or IRD. The cable connecting the receiver to the LNBF or LNB must be of the low loss type RG-6 or RG-10, etc.

High Definition TV Offers Realistic

Broadcast Viewing Many consumers have an eye for picture quality of high definition TV. The digital programming, demanded by government regulations to begin in 2012 is already been broadcast on many networks. Essentially high definition TV is the result of the signal being broadcast in digital format instead of analog. Also HDTV is less affected by spurious transmission and weather interference. The older analog television sets, which were equipped with the antenna to pull the signals out of the areas, were often subjected to snow on the screen due to a weak signal. There was a mark able interference on the picture quality, when other electrical appliances were in use near the television. Cable and satellite providers could eliminate most of the interference. But digital broadcasts achieved by using a high definition TV and antenna has done away with the interference without subscribing to cable and satellite services. Similar to the frequency modulation broadcasts of audio, high definition TV broadcasts are in a digital format. Although they do require line of site between its origin and destination, causing some interference in satellite signals during JANUARY

periods of heavy clouds or storm activities. By the input signal is only a part of the plan for high definition TV program reception. Many homes are already receiving high definition TV broadcasts by cable or satellite providers, while they still have an analog television. Not all broadcasters have gone to a full digital format, however the ones that have gone for digital format requires a converter in or on the television in order to show the digital broadcast. This is basically for older models of televisions. Some retailers have discontinued the sale of televisions equipped with analog tuners. They offer only high definition TV sets, as they believe it will be a necessity in the coming few years. As such those who have purchased a high definition TV and do not subscribe to cable or satellite, may not be benefiting from owning this technology. High definition TV antennas are available to enable reception of high def signal when sent out by local broadcasters. By the year 2012 when all programming is mandated to be in digital format, consumers will have to choose between owning a settop box that coverts the digital signal to analog or to buy a new high definition TV.

Satellite Television in Rural Areas For people who live in remote or rural locations, broadcast television is often limited. The VHF and UHF signals that broadcast television emits are picked up by antenna, however remote or rural locations often are not conducive to a strong signal. There's the option of cable, however many of the remote or rural locations do not have access to cable television. Today, people who live in these areas have an option for quality viewing and that's satellite TV. Satellite TV is created through a communications satellite that is in fixed orbit above the earth. A viewer signs up with a satellite service. By paying for the satellite service they are then able to receive the satellite programming. Only those who pay for the service are able to receive the programming. Others are unable to receive it because the signal is scrambled and is not descrambled without paid authorization. Receiving programming though satellite TV is a wireless set-up. This contributes to the quality viewing. In addition, gone are the very large dish receivers of the earlier days. These were indeed an eyesore. Today the satellite dishes are small and barely noticeable. As with cable television, theft has been a JANUARY

problem with satellite television. Unauthorized people figured out ways to descramble the programming and offer it to consumers at their own prices. Today, significant improvements have been made to prevent theft of the satellite network. Also, the descrambling features are very specific for viewers. Not all programming will come into a household. Some people may pay for pay-per-view programming; others may pay for adult programming and more. Even though you may know how to install a satellite dish yourself, the satellite dish is best installed by a satellite TV provider for best results. The only problem with satellite TV could be interference of the programming because of rain or snowfall. However, for many viewers, this is but a minor inconvenience. The large amount of channels that are produced with satellite programming is worth a few interruptions in service. Another aspect of satellite TV is the amount of programming that is good for specific audiences. Because there are so many channels with satellite, there's something for everyone. Those in rural or remote locations are sure to find programming that is specific to the area.

DIGITAL

Wishing you could pause your favorite TV show while you get a cup of tea? Hoping that you could stop the time at the last few seconds of that baseball game because you so need to go to the bathroom? Did you just miss your favorite television show’s last episode? Now with the newest technology, rewinding, pausing and recording the shows you want is possible! Introduced in the late 1990s, digital TV or DTV is a new method of sending and receiving audio and video through digital signals which aims to free up the broadcast spectrum so it can be useful to more important services for public security and safety or more advanced wireless services. In this technology, multicasting is used wherein one channel can now have several variations, for example channel 7 for an analog TV can become 7-1, 7-2, 7-3 and so on. With this viewers can now experience lesser interference gaining a better reception, clearer sound and image quality, new channels and features. Several Digital TV providers have emerged in the US, including Freeview, Sky Digital and BT Vision. Freeview, more commonly known as Digital Terrestial TV or DTT, provides JANUARY

60 channels of TV and radio which are broadcasted free with no installation necessary. For some, however the will probably need to buy a new TV. Channel line-up is limited as the more popular ones are not available for free, also Sky Digital, on the other hand offers more channels such as Sky One, Paramount Comedy, and a range of about 200 channels. Unlike Freeview, you need an engineer to install the satellite dish. Also, a digibox and your phone line are then attached to your TV which will allow you to access the interactive services and to verify payment for pay per view channels. Sky Digital also offers broadband internet access. In the United States, the Federal Communication Commission intends to complete the migration by end of 2012. As of March 2012, all TVs manufactured in the country were required to have digital tuners. Some analog TVs are still sold by retailers and many consumers are unaware that these might no longer work next year. To remedy this, the Commission released information on the different equipments that households can use for their analog TVs to receive digital signal.

SATELLITE

PROGRAMMING

S

atellite TV providers get programming from two major sources: national turnaround channels (such as HBO, ESPN and CNN) and various local channels (the ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and PBS affiliates in a particular area). Most of the turnaround channels also provide programming for cable TV, and the local channels typically broadcast their programming over the airwaves. Turnaround channels usually have a distribution center that beams their programming to a geosynchronous satellite. The broadcast center uses large satellite dishes to pick up these analog and digital signals from several sources. Most local stations don't transmit their programming to satellites, so the provider has to get it another way. If the provider includes local programming in a particular area, it will have a small local facility consisting of a few racks of communications equipment. The equipment receives local signals directly from the broadcaster through fiber-optic cable or an antenna and then transmits them to the central broadcast center. The broadcast center converts all of this programming into a high-quality, uncompressed digital stream. At this point, the stream contains a vast quantity of data - about 270 megabits per second (Mbps) for each channel. In order to transmit the signal from there, the broadcast center has to compress it. Otherwise, it would be too big for the satellite to handle. In the next JANUARY

Inside view

TV

section, we'll find out how the signal is compressed. Advancements in digital cable provide improved audio and picture quality with additional channels at a lower cost than satellite. You can also access cable channels from multiple rooms in your house fairly easily. Cable has limited access in rural areas, and you should prepare for increased service costs as your provider updates its equipment. Your service costs are also subject to local taxes. Satellite offers movie-quality audio and picture display with hundreds of channels. This service is readily available in rural and urban areas and provides access to more digital and high definition programming. It is expensive to purchase all the equipment at the outset (and you can't typically rent it). If you want to access satellite TV in multiple rooms, be prepared for extra fees. Also, satellite TV is subject to weather-related malfunctions. Satellite signals have a pretty long path to follow before they appear on your TV screen in the form of your favorite TV show. Because satellite signals contain such high-quality digital data, it would be impossible to transmit them without compression. Compression simply means that unnecessary or repetitive information is removed from the signal before it is transmitted. The signal is reconstructed after transmission.

Triax Launches flexible and modular

TMM-Multiswitchsystems

People living in apartment blocks no longer have to put up with the usual either/or decisions when they choose their shared satellite channels. Now the local dealer or installer can help them expand their present system, module by module. Even buildings with a large number of apartments and floors have this option. By combining modules of the new Triax multiswitches, TMM-4 and TMM-5, viewers sharing a system may want to try out the basic or light version first – and receive channels from just one satellite position. Later, at any given time, they can easily expand the system to include two, three or even four satellite positions. "Apartment block owners achieve supreme flexibility and freedom by investing in a basic TMM-module system. If at some point they want more channels, they just ask their local installer to add new modules and cables to the existing system. This way, the first investment won't be money out the window as it is still an integrated part of the new expanded system," says the marked JANUARY

manager from Triax. "What's more, the cascadable TMM-modules virtually eliminate the well-known problems caused by varying distances from the multiswitch to the individual set-top boxes. To make everybody happy, simply mount a TMMmultiswitch on each (or every other) floor." Every TMM-module serves as a multiswitch for one satellite position and four polarities. To ensure reception from four satellite positions and 16 polarities, just arrange four modules in parallel. TMM-5 also distributes the terrestrial signal, which means that a fully expanded system with 17 outputs only needs three TMM4 modules and one TMM-5 module to be up and running. Even the power supply is a mobile and flexible module. Therefore, installers can easily mount and connect the entire multiswitch system wherever they find feasible – depending on the pre-installed power outlets and practical working space. TMM-solutions are most favourable in large buildings with many users, or when a

HOW TELEVISION IS UNITING A NATION

Traditionally, TV in Russia is much more than just pure entertainment. It's a social institution of great importance that brings the nation together and provides the basis for Russians' sense of self and identity. Why? Today the Russian economy is on an upswing, and so are consumer services and advertising. It is not surprising, then, that the Russian television market is among the most dynamic in the world, with about 30 percent annual growth rate since 2000. In this market free-to-air (FTA) television leads, setting it apart from its European and American counterparts. The development of, and public demand for, paid satellite and cable services is far smaller in Russia than in the UK and the US. Terrestrial broadcasting owes its strength to its content and quality. There are currently more than 20 terrestrial channels available in such cities as Yekaterinburg, Vladivostok, Moscow, St Petersburg and other large cities. But FTA in Russia includes niche sport and music channels, traditionally pillars of the pay TV industry in the UK and the U.S. In Russia, there are at least two free terrestrial sport channels, MTV and Muz-TV, and three or four movie channels: Russian terrestrial TV offers a JANUARY

diversity of viewing that is difficult for subscription channels to rival. Russians have traditionally enjoyed free TV. Paid channels will hardly be a priority in a country where the average monthly wage is $400. Technology also presents a problem for the subscription channels. Cables cover only 22 percent of Russian territory, and they are often old copper cables laid to carry analogue signals with a capacity of between 14 and 18 channels – nowadays a negligible number. In the areas where the cable network has be relaid or modernized, the problem is reversed: a 100-channel cable covers the entire city, but lacks sufficient content for this number of channels. There is another major factor: homemade programs dominate Russia's TV landscape. Leading international titles – movies, series and shows – are usually confined to relatively weak time slots. Instead, Russian producers adapt international formats to meet national values and tastes. The purchased and adapted formats play an important role in Russian TV channels' programming. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is very popular on Channel One, as is Wonderfield, Russia's Wheel of Fortune.

ost developing countries use satellite technology for international rather than for domestic communication. In the future, there should be substantially increased domestic and regional use of satellite technology. The potential exists in this application for enormous increases in traffic, and the impact on developing countries' economies will be the greatest. In addition to the international links, several developing countries also employed INTELSAT capacity to establish domestic public telecommunication networks. Generally, these early domestic networks were set up in special situations where difficult terrain, climatic conditions, or territories separated by large bodies of water, made conventional telecommunications impossible. Subsequently, a number of these developing countries, including India, Indonesia, Brazil, and Mexico, launched their own satellites to connect these networks. The potential of telecommunications satellites to improve communications in developing nations, particularly the rural areas, is considered. Requirements for improved telephone, television and radio service in developing nations are indicated, and it is argued that satellites would provide one of the most efficient means of developing networks for telephony, television and radio both for intercity trunk routes and for rural areas. The forms such satellite systems could take for rural

M

telephony and direct, semi direct and redistributed television broadcasting are examined, and an approach to the integration of telephone and television services is proposed. Telephony and television capacity requirements for a typical sub-Saharan country are estimated, and the financial aspects of the systems are considered. It is concluded that satellites can considerably improve the general communications situation in many developing nations, giving vast rural areas access to telecommunications for the first time and with comparatively low funding requirements. Traditional communication satellites orbit the Earth at an altitude of around 22,000 miles, which can limit signal strength and bandwidth. O3b will use cheaper medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites with an altitude of around 6,000 miles, which will provide a stronger signal. Indonesia entered the global space communication era by the inauguration of her international INTELSAT station at Jatiluhur, 60 km south of Jakarta, in 1969. Indonesia's membership at INTELSAT brought new experiences and opportunities for reliable international communication for the first time in the Indonesian international communication history. Practically all international communications in the past were by unreliable HF means. Indonesia made a wise decision to join the INTELSAT global system, although she had just experienced a difficult period, economically and politically.

MOBILE TV:

EXECUTING

THE VISION he number of Mobile TV users has reached 20 million globally, and will balloon to over two billion in 2013, according to this new report.

T

The report titled, “Mobile TV: Executing the Vision” says the vast majority of users currently access free-to-air mobile TV, but pay-TV will catch on as high-quality madefor-TV programming becomes widely available on subscription-based channels. Mobile TV is a killer app, said Naqi Jaffery, President and Chief Analyst, Telecom Trends International. Just as mobile voice is becoming the primary means of voice communication, mobile TV will eventually become the primary means of accessing television, Mr. Jaffery said. The momentum generated by mobile TV has surprised many industry observers, Mr. Jaffery said. Despite the multiplicity of standards and lack of uniform frequency allocation, mobile TV is making a tremendous impact on the marketplace, he said. According to the report, the market is seeing the evolution of multi-network architecture with the same device supporting more than one standard. However, the report says, DVB-H has emerged as the de facto mobile TV standard JANUARY

globally. The market is seeing the convergence of out-of-band broadcast and in-band multicast technologies into one seamless network architecture, the report says. Besides providing high-quality television reception, it says, such architecture enables interactivity that will give a significant boost to mobile commerce. The report, “Mobile TV: Executing the Vision,” provides a comprehensive expose and analysis of the global mobile TV market. The report discusses the status of the major mobile TV technologies in terms of their technological development and market implementation. The report analyzes the role of market drivers and market inhibitors in the growth of mobile TV. The report offers market sizing for mobile TV in terms of subscribers and revenue, and provides detailed forecasts segmented by regions and by technologies. The report has 160 pages, and provides seven-year forecasts for all the major mobile TV technologies in all the five regions worldwide. Mobile broadcasting services have already attracted tens of millions of viewers in Japan and South Korea. Mobile TV Broadcasting is a comprehensive report analysing the evolution of television for mobile devices.

Inside view Terrestrial television is a term which refers to modes of television broadcasting which do not involve satellite transmission or via underground cables. The term is uncommon in the United States while more common in Europe. Terrestrial television broadcasting dates back to the very beginnings of television as a medium itself with the first long-distance public television broadcast from Washington, D.C., on April 7, 1927. Aside from transmission by high-flying planes moving in a loop using a system developed by Westinghouse called Stratovision, there was virtually no other method of television delivery until the 1950s with the beginnings of cable television, or community antenna television (CATV). The first non-terrestrial method of

delivering television signals that in no way depended on a signal originating from a traditional terrestrial source began with the use of communications satellites during the 1960s and 1970s. In Europe, a planning conference ("ST61") held under the auspices of the International Telecommunications Union in Stockholm in 1961 allocated frequencies the Bands IV and V for the first time for broadcast television use. It also superseded the 1951 Plan (also made in Stockholm) which had first allocated Band II frequencies for FM radio and Band III frequencies for television. Following the ST61 conference, UHF frequencies were first used in the UK in 1964 with the introduction of BBC2. In UK, VHF channels were kept on the old 405-line system, while UHF was used solely for 625-line broadcasts (which later used PAL colour). Television broadcasting in the 405-line system continued after the JANUARY

TERRESTRIAL

TELEVISION

introduction of four analogue programmes in the UHF bands until the last 405-line transmitters were switched off on January 6, 1985. VHF Band III is still used in other countries around Europe for PAL broadcasts, though many have plans to phase it out. The success of terrestrial analogue television across Europe varies from country to country. Although each country has rights to a certain number of frequencies by virtue of the ST61 plan, not all of them have been brought into service. In the United States and most of the rest of North America as well, terrestrial television underwent a revolutionary transformation with the eventual acceptance of the NTSC standard for color television broadcasts in 1953. Later, Europe and the rest of the world either chose between the later PAL and SECAM color television standards, or adopted NTSC. Japan also uses a version of NTSC.

SWITCHED ON TO SATELLITE TV France is rightly proud of its artistic culture but unfortunately this does not often extend to its television programmes. Evening schedules are often dominated by two-hour long talk shows, dubbed American series and excruciatingly drawn out musical 'spectaculars'. Therefore it is no wonder that many people are keen to install satellite TV so that their choice is widened. But with so many different standards from PAL-I to SECAM, SECAM-L and SECAM B/G just what can you watch on your TV set? John Sidwell, and his wife Sue, have been running their satellite installation service bigdishsat.com from the Limousin region since 1996. And they have experienced many of the problems and pitfalls of television installation. “Most televisions bought in the UK will not receive the terrestrial TV transmissions from French transmitters,” explained John. “This is because the broadcast standards are different in the UK from the rest of Europe. “France uses a transmission system known as SECAM L, the UK uses PAL-I, the rest of Europe uses PAL B/G.” French terrestrial TV has six stations broadcasting throughout the country: TF1, France 2, France 3, Canal

JANUARY

Plus, M6 and Arte, but reception can be poor in some areas. A television set in France is comparable in price to those in the UK and you may find some being offered in a sale. For example, a small portable TV with remote control, from the local supermarket costs about €80 - €100 just make sure you have an internal aerial if required, as one does not come as standard. Satellite TV is very popular in France and the choice of stations can be mind blowing with a wide variety of content in an array of languages available. “To connect a satellite receiver to a television you will most often use a SCART lead,” said John. “The Digibox satellite receiver for UK programmes has two SCART sockets, a UHF socket and on some models an S-VHS socket, which gives superior sound and picture quality. “All these connections can be used with a British TV in France; which one depends on the TV itself. “A television bought in France will usually work with the Digibox if it is connected using a SCART or SVHS lead whilst the UHF outlet connects the TV aerial for terrestrial French broadcasts.”

VIACCESS KEEN TO CAPITALISE ON MOBILE TV DEMAND Conditional access provider Viaccess has turned its attentions to the mobile TV sector as it looks to expand its business in the Middle East.

Despite the technology facing a number of challenges in developed regions, Viaccess views the platform particularly the DVB-H standard as having huge potential. “There is a comparable level of interest in the Middle

East as there is in Europe,” said Gilles Merle, sales group manager, Viaccess. “The business model and the potential market are still under development in Europe. The success of mobile TV has been patchy so far. “In the Middle East, however, the public are very tech friendly and this scale of application would be extremely interesting to local consumers. We have seen lots of interest in mobile TV from companies like du and Etisalat,” claimed Merle. According to Merle, many of the previous problems facing the technology have now been addressed. “The main issue with mobile TV has been the integration of broadcast technologies with the handset. It is very expensive and it has been difficult to persuade the manufacturers to integrate proprietary software into the handset.”

DOWNTURN WILL NOT IMPACT SATELLITE LAUNCH PLANS The president and CEO of Arabsat Eng. Khalid Balkheyour has declared the company's ambitious strategy to launch a new satellite every year until 2012 would not be swayed by the current economic downturn.

Speaking exclusively to DPme.com at CABSAT, Balkheyour said the $700 million project to replace an existing satellite and launch three other high-capacity birds remained key to Arabsat's long-term growth plan to support the development of new broadcast services, such as high-definition television. “Given the current economic crisis, it's a major announcement for us,” he said. “We are optimistic about our growth plans in the region. Of course we face competition from new players entering the market and other external circumstances, but we are confident our strategy will hold us in good stead moving forward.” “The new satellites will also allow for the launch of high definition services,” he confirmed. “We are planning to allocate a certain amount of capacity on each satellite for these services. Of course, HD demands a significant amount of bandwidth, but with compression technologies improving all the time, the strain on bandwidth will ease.

SATELLITE BOX How to connect two TV's to one satellite box? I want the same picture on both TV's? (Abbas Rizwi, Karachi) A: The simplest way would be to use the video output for one of the TV's and the RF output for the other one. This requires no extra devices to buy, just a bit of cable. If you want to use the RF output for both, just connect an RF splitter to the RF output of the satellite box, and then one cable from that to each TV.If you want to use the video output from the satellite box (instead of RF), you'll need an appropriate splitter. Depending on what sort of video signal you have (composite, S-VHS, component, or HDMI), you'll need that type of splitter.

WEAK SIGNALS I change channels on my Q:2When satellite receiver, there is a significant pause with a black screen. Is this

an inherent feature or is there anything that can eliminate that lag time? (Khurshed Alam, Hyderabad) A: This is normal. It takes the receiver some time to properly decode the compressed video signal received from the satellite or digital cable system. You need to wait until the receiver receives at least one key frame in the signal. This delay is unavoidable and an inherent part of the video compression scheme used during transmission.

TERRESTRIAL INTERFERENCE

MISSING CHANNEL

missing odd channels on some is Terrestrial Interference (TI) Q:3What Q:5I'm satellites and even channels on and how does it affect my system? What can be done about it? (Sajid Aziz, Lahore) A: TI is anything operating on a microwave transmission which is the same as your satellite receives. Depending on the severity of the TI, your screen may be totally snowy or wavy, or you may see "sparkles" in bright or dark colors on your picture. TI may not

affect every channel. It may only be apparent at certain times of the day. Various types of TI filters are available and may help eliminate the problem.

SATELLITE PROBLEM All of my odd/even channels are Q:4out on every satellite. What causes this? (Faran Iqbal, Peshawar) A: Usually this is caused by the Low Noise Block Downconverter (LNB) not functioning properly. LNB is the component responsible for converting the bulk signal your satellite dish receives and breaking it down into frequencies that are recognizable by your satellite receiver.

other satellites. I've tried adjusting the skew and it does not help. Why? (Sumeer Khan, Quetta) A: There may be a lose wire somewhere between your satellite dish and your satellite receiver. If you have verified that all of the wiring from your dish to your receiver is tightly connected, the servo motor on the dish has most likely malfunctioned.

SIGNAL LOSS summer I lost all my channels Q:6 This from noon until about 7 pm. almost every day. I've never had this problem before. ( Anil Peter, via e-mail) A: The LNB on the dish may have become temperature sensitive. Extreme heat or extreme cold may cause all your channels to go out. Check the temperature the next time it goes out and check it again when it comes

back on. If there is a big difference, 90 when it goes out and 70 when it comes back on, the LNB may need to be replaced. JANUARY

PLUSTV MAKES PAY-TV HISTORY

P

lusTV makes pay-TV history by becoming the first service provider in Finland to offer customisable service packages. PlusTV is the only service provider in Finland to launch a service package with contents freely customisable by the customer. Customisable pay-TV packages have been one of the most requested services in PlusTV's customer satisfaction surveys. The number of pay-TV channels offered by PlusTV will also increase to 13 with the signing of new channel agreements with KinoTV and Disney Channel. PlusTV has listened to its customers and launched a new service package that allows customers to customise their channel package to best suit their life situation. According to a recent survey conducted by PlusTV, potential pay-TV customer target groups saw the inability to freely choose and customise their service packages as the greatest obstacle to making the purchase (Purchase Process Survey, January 2008). PlusTV takes the wishes of its customers seriously. Therefore, we are now offering them the chance to build their very own pay-TV package and choose the package size that best suits their life situation. “We are constantly evaluating the wishes of our customers through surveys and JANUARY

customer panels, and we are seeking to develop our products to meet these needs,” comments Vesa Mars, CEO, PlusTV. “Only by listening to our customers have we been able to nearly triple pay-TV penetration and reach over 280,000 subscribers.” PlusTV's new packages come in three different sizes with three different prices. PlusTV Mini package allows the customer to choose 6 channels from a selection of 11. This package is priced at EUR 14.90 per month. My PlusTV package allows the customer to choose 9 favourite channels and is priced at EUR 19.90 per month, while the PlusTV Total package includes the complete selection of 13 PlusTV channels. PlusTV Total package is priced at EUR 24.90 per month. PlusTV is the leading payTV service provider for terrestrial households in Finland. PlusTV currently has a total of 280,000 digital terrestrial pay-TV customers. Vesa Mars is the CEO of the company, and Arne Wessberg is Chairman of the Board. The company is financed by the American investment company Baker Capital and the Nordic investment company Provider Venture Partners AB.

SHOULD YOU BUY YOUR OWN SATELLITE TV RECEIVERS?

Inside view

Satellite TV provides viewers with thousands of channels, a clear picture and low prices for each package of programming. Depending on your specific viewing needs, you will be able to pick the perfect package for you with a dish television service. One of the important questions that individuals interested in purchasing satellite TV packages want to know is if a receiver that allows them to view their programs is rented or can you purchase one on your own, or if you should even consider purchasing your own devices versus buying one from the provider that offers the service. A factor that you can consider when determining if your satellite TV receiver should be purchased through the dish service or on your own, is if your particular

JANUARY

dish provider has a list of electronic devices that are compatible with their particular service. Some devices may need to be activated or setup by calling your provider, and your device is not on their particular list, you could have a problem. It is important to purchase a receiver compatible to the dish and service you are signing up for. There is a possibility that your particular dish service may only advocate the purchase of their particular device, so be sure to ask that question when you call to order your service - BEFORE you purchase your own device. Some services may charge you a rental fee for your satellite TV receiver, so be sure to inquire as to whether you are purchasing your device or if you are renting from your provider. If you plan to change your providers at any point, it could be important for you to know whether you can bring your receiver with you or not. Most services allow you to purchase your satellite TV receiver, and you may even have the option to purchase more sophisticated devices from local electronic stores, but you should check for compatibility issues if you decide to buy one on your own. Be sure to ask for certain if your device is rented or if you are purchasing it on a plan, find out how much the total cost will be and over how many payments you are extending your purchase.

THE JOURNEY OF TELKOM

In 1976, Indonesia became the 3rd nation in the world operating a Domestic Satellite Communication System using GSO Satellites, the PALAPA A system. This satellite system provided telephony and facsimile services between cities in Indonesia and became the main TV program distribution infrastructure. TELKOM has been operating satellite communication networks for almost 30 years, TELKOM has experienced technology improvements, value added service improvements and also changes in regulations. Nowadays, TELKOM operates 2 satellites, PALAPA B4 and TELKOM-1, for telephony trunking for cellular systems and as data and Internet backbone throughout Indonesia. This article is intended to describe the journey of TELKOM in operating its satellites and satellite network, earth stations, services and business aspects. TELKOM satellites were originally designed for domestic communications as they were intended for unifying Indonesia. The satellites had to cover all islands of Indonesia including East Indonesia to encourage development in the intended regions. The adoption of this mode of communication followed closely satellite technology developments itself and evolved in line with domestic and regional market JANUARY

demand. As can be seen, the capacity and transmission power (EIRP – Effective Isotropic Radiated Power) has been increasing and also the coverage. The increased power is an effort to reduce the link-cost including earth station costs and the cost of opening new markets. PALAPA A-1, launched on 8 July 1976 was successfully loaded with traffic from 40 earth stations spread all over Indonesia. Six of its 12 transponders were loaded with telephony traffic and 1 transponder by the national television program, while the 5 remaining were for backup. On 11 March 1977, PALAPA -A2, located at orbital slot 77 degrees East Longitude, was launched from the Kennedy Space centre, Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA for back up and ready to be operated in the event PALAPA-A1 experienced a failure or when the demand could not be accommodated by PALAPA-A1. The coverage as well as technical capability were increased: where PALAPA A1 was for the Indonesian territory only, PALAPA B was able to cover the entire ASEAN region. In terms of capacity, PALAPA B capacity was increased to 24 transponders, 2-fold that of PALAPA A. PALAPA Bs were placed in a new and better location: 108 degE, 103 degE and 118 degree East, in order to minimize interference.

What to Look for with

Satellite Television

T

he days of boring and limited television are gone. Thanks to the new development of satellite television, people who enjoy watching different genres can now experience television in an entirely new way. Satellite television is surprisingly affordable, highly reliable, and the vast number of programming options staggering. Anyone interested in switching from cable to satellite viewing needs to know what specifically to look for so they get the most for their hard-earned money. It is most important that the consumer work with a reputable company, one that has a solid reputation and highly trained staff. That way, every step of the process in going with satellite from choosing the programming to installation to troubleshooting would be handled in a quick and efficient manner. After all, the satellite television experience is only going to be good as the provider. For starters, a good satellite provider would be happy to answer questions, while providing guidance to ensure the consumer gets what he or she really needs and not overkill. Today, satellite television has become more efficient than ever before. Therefore, the provider would look at the person's individual situation to help

JANUARY

determine the type and size of satellite dish needed. Over the years, the size of the dish has decreased while the efficiency increased. This means the consumer should be provided with the appropriate dish based on need. Another aspect of a good satellite television provider would be one that guides the consumer to the types of programming best suited for his or her needs. For instance, if the individual were a sports nut and therefore the most important consideration for going with satellite was to get both domestic and international sports, then the provider should not try to convince the customer that he or she also needs music. While that might be recommended, the provider should listen to the desires of the consumer and then showing that person the opportunities that exist The same is true as far as pricing. Every type of exclusive programming added on to the basic satellite television plan would increase cost. However, a pushy salesperson could easily lose the entire deal by not listening to what the consumer wants. A reputable provider would set the customer up with the right programming but inform that person that if later if something wanted to be added it could.
