LETTER FROM EDITOR Dear Readers, Television on the mobile phone, or mobile TV, is getting everyone in the broadcasting and mobile telecommunications industries deliriously excited.Industry analysts predict the Asia-Pacific region, with its huge mobile phone subscriber base, has the potential to be the biggest market for mobile TV. In a report recently, UK-based Portio Research predicted that the Asia-Pacific region will break the magic 1 billion-subscriber mark and double the number to 2 billion mobile phone users by 2011. A substantial part of the forecast subscriber growth from start-2006 to end-2011 will be witnessed in the Asia-Pacific region, with vast growth opportunities in China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. By 2011, the Asia-Pacific region will account for about 50 per cent of the world's mobile subscriber base, with a staggering 1.1 billion subscribers from China and India--the world's two biggest mobile markets. China also is seen as a potentially strong market for mobile broadcasting. Satellite is a good option in China, especially for servicing areas where terrestrial signals e do not have a reach. By

US SATELLITE TV LAUNCHES CHINA'S GLOBAL ENGLISH TV 24-HOUR 3-D CHANNELS CHANNEL HITS THE AIR US satellite broadcaster DirecTV Inc. had launched what it claims are the world's first around-the-clock channels exclusively offering 3-D programs, with the cooperation of Japanese home appliance maker Panasonic Corp. DirecTV opened three dedicated 3-D channels -- a pay-per-view channel focusing on movies, documentaries and other programming, and on-demand and free demo channels featuring sports, music and other content, the company said. Customers need 3-D TV sets to access the channels. As the exclusive presenting sponsor of the channels, Panasonic will also provide technical support, according to DirecTV. Major home appliance makers including Panasonic and Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE) have started selling their 3-D television sets in the United States. Sony also plans to launch 3-D broadcasting in the US market next year. In the United States, specialty broadcasters have so far offered limited 3-D programs covering World Cup soccer games, while Sony and Sky Perfect JSAT Corp. (OOTC:SKPJF) have broadcast 3-D World Cup programs in Japan.

China has launched a 24-hour, global English-language TV network. "The English service will provide international and China news with a Chinese perspective to global audiences," Wu Jincai, head of the new China Xinhua News Network Corporation (CNC), said about CNC World. The channel is an offshoot of state-run Xinhua, China's official news agency. Much like its counterparts in the rest of the world, CNC World features breaking news, feature reports and weather updates. Its content is
split between 70 per cent world news and 30 per cent domestic news. A big difference, though, is its objective. Experts say the channel's main aim is to provide a Chinafriendly perspective on stories, especially on issues such as Tibet and human rights. Jincai insists though that CNC World is a "not a propaganda station." The Chinese government announced a $6.5-billion US plan few years ago to raise the country's profile by expanding Xinhua, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) and the People's Daily, the newspaper of the Communist Party.

ASTRIUM TO BUILD W5A SATELLITE FOR EUTELSAT
Eutelsat Communications has selected Astrium to build the W5A satellite based on its Eurostar E3000 platform, the operator has announced. Scheduled for launch in the 2010 fourth quarter, the 48-transponder W5A Ku-band satellite will be located at 70.5 degrees East and replace the W5 spacecraft. In addition to expanding available capacity at the orbital slot, W5A will be used for a range of professional applications that include government services, broadband access, GSM backhauling and professional video in Europe, Africa and Central and Southeast Asia. “Through a high degree of on-board connectivity, clients will be able to use the beams either for regional coverage or to interconnect continents. This will support high-growth services that include secure government communications in Central Asia through hubs located in the region or in Europe, business networks between Southeast Asia and Africa, and direct connectivity between Europe and Australia,” Eutelsat CEO Michel de Rosen said in a statement. W5A is the 10th telecommunication satellite awarded to Astrium in the past 18 months. The W5A construction contract is part of Eutelsat's 450 million euros ($551.1 million) per-year capital expenditure program, which extends to June 2012. Astrium is scheduled to deliver the Ka-Sat satellite to Eutelsat later this year, followed by Atlantic Bird 7 in 2011 and W5A in 2012.
KOREA'S 1ST WEATHER SATELLITE LAUNCHED
GLOBAL FLASH NEWS Sunday said the French Ariane rocket carrying Korea's first geostationary satellite Cheollian lifted off the at 6:41 a.m. on Sunday (KST). Around 7:19 a.m., 38 minutes after liftoff, the satellite earth station at Dongara, Australia succeeded in exchanging the first communications with the Cheollian as planned. The Cheollian was finally put into space in a sixth blastoff attempt after five delays since last year. The Cheollian is the first geostationary meteorological satellite the country has developed with its own technology. It will observe clouds, humidity, and typhoons and send data to the ground from some 36,000 km above the Korean Peninsula around the clock. It also provides satellite communication services and ocean current observation.
NIGERIA'S SATELLITE ALMOST READY
The Nigerian Communications Satellite, NIGCOMSAT-1 which was parked in the orbit two years ago will soon be replaced, as the project is now nearing completion. Ahmed Rufai, the Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT Limited, a parastatal of the federal ministry of science and technology said this on Monday in Abuja when he hosted Mohammed Abubakar, the Minister of Science and Technology who was on a working visit to the company. The managing director hinted that before the end of 2011, the satellite now known as NIGCOMSAT1R would have been re-launched into the orbit. “We are about 60 per cent completed. We have passed what is called the critical design review. Next week, we are going for the quarterly review meeting there (in China), after which we will start the assembling, integration, and testing. Actually, the launch is third quarter of 2011 and at the moment we are more than midway in the replacement programme," he said. The satellite was successfully launched in May 2007 but failed in November 2008 when it lost power from the southern solar array.

FREEVIEW GETS AL JAZEERA
The English version of the Qatar based news service Al Jazeera, has announced that it will be showing up on the free-to-view digital television platform, Freeview. The channel is already available on satellite TV through Sky and Freesat, where it can be received in around ten million homes, but this deal with Freeview will effectively double its UK audience to around twenty million households. Al Jazeera will be on the air from 6 pm to 11 pm every day on Freeview channel 89 from its studios in London and in Washington.

"A few minutes ago the State of Israel launched the Ofek-9 (Horizon-9) satellite from the Palmachim base," the ministry said. "The results of the launch are being examined by

CANADA SEEKS RUSSIAN SATELLITE SUPPORT
The Canadian Space Agency is seeking advice from its Russian counterpart in a long-term project to put a satellite over the North Pole. "The Russians have a lot of experience in that sort of orbit and they've agreed to share technical information with us," said Savi Sachdev, director general of space utilization for the Canadian Space Agency. Russia is developing a similar program. The two countries would share scientific information gained from the new satellites. The new project would orbit directly over the poles, taking detailed weather measurements as well as providing high-bandwidth communications capacity. The lack of high-bandwidth communication at extreme northern latitudes has been an issue for Canadian Forces on past sovereignty operations.

STAR PLANS MIDDLE EAST CHANNELS
Star plans to launch international versions of its popular television channels - Star Plus, Star One and Star Gold in the Middle East markets. The new channels are Star Plus Middle East, Star One Middle East, Star Gold South East Asia and Star One South East Asia. These channels will have a mix of existing programming and a few regionspecific shows. The pay-television market for Indian channels in South East Asia and West Asia is estimated to be around Rs 500600 Crore annually and growing at 8% to 10% annually. According to reports, Star will launch these region-specific new channels shortly from India as it shifts the uplink base from Hong Kong to Mumbai. STAR will use the Essel Shyam teleport in Noida, to uplink its channels from Indian soil.

Satellite TV Signal Satellite signals have a pretty long path to follow before they appear on your TV screen in the form of your favorite TV show. Because satellite signals contain such high-quality digital data, it would be impossible to transmit them without compression. Compression simply means that unnecessary or repetitive information is removed from the signal before it is transmitted. The signal is reconstructed after transmission. Satellite TV uses a special type of video file compression standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). With MPEG compression, the provider is able to transmit significantly more channels. There are currently five of these MPEG standards, each serving a different purpose. DirecTV and DISH Network, the two major satellite TV providers in the United States, once used MPEG-2, which is still used to store movies on DVDs and for digital cable television (DTV). With MPEG-2, the TV provider can reduce the 270-Mbps stream to about 5 or 10 Mbps (depending on the type of programming). Now, DirecTV and DISH Network use MPEG-4 compression. Because MPEG-4 was originally designed for streaming video in small-screen media like computers, it can encode more efficiently and provide a greater bandwidth than MPEG-2. MPEG-2 remains the official standard for digital TV compression, but it is better equipped to analyze static images, like those you see on a talk show or MAY
newscast, than moving, dynamic images. MPEG-4 can produce a better picture of dynamic images through use of spatial (space) and temporal (time) compression. This is why satellite TV using MPEG-4 compression provides high definition of quickly-moving objects that constantly change place and direction on the screen, like in a basketball game. All MPEG standards exist to promote system interoperability among your computer, television and handheld video and audio devices. They are: MPEG-1: the original standard for encoding and decoding streaming video and audio files. MPEG-2: the standard for digital television, this compresses files for transmission of highquality video. MPEG-4: the standard for compressing high-definition video into smaller-scale files that stream to computers, cell phones and PDAs (personal digital assistants). MPEG-21: also referred to as the Multimedia Framework. The standard that interprets what digital content to provide to which individual user so that media plays flawlessly under any language, machine or user conditions.

PAY TELEVISION DISTRIBUTION Pay television or premium television refers to subscription-based television services, usually provided by both analog and digital cable and satellite, but also increasingly by digital terrestrial methods. Some parts of the world, notably in France and the US, have also offered encrypted analog terrestrial signals, available for subscription. Also, some providers offer channels owned by the same company in a single package. Pay television channels come in different price ranges. Many channels carrying advertising combine this income with a lower subscription fee. These are called "mini-pay" channels and are often sold as a part of a package with numerous similarly priced channels. Sometimes, the channels are also sold , MAY
allowing the consumer to select which channels they subscribe to. There are also premium television services which have a significantly higher price than the mini-pay channels, but they compensate for their higher price by carrying little or no advertising and also providing a higher quality output. As advertising sales are sensitive to the business cycle, some broadcasters try to balance them with more stable income from subscriptions. Pay television has become popular with cable and satellite television. There have also been some subscription services on analogue terrestrial television; but free-toair television has always dominated, and scrambled services have been.

An HD revamp of the twin-DVB-S2tunered Digicorder S2, the HD-S2x has already been available (as the HD-S2) for some time in Germany. Unfortunately, the HDD is the same 160GB as the S2's. Dish Satellite TV System What You Need to Know Imagine being able to receive any channel you want, at any time, wherever you are located. Even if it meant you were located at the most remote of regions. With a dish satellite TV system, all of this is possible. Essentially, a dish satellite TV system consists of a dish antenna and a receiver that decodes satellite broadcasts. SATELLITE TV EXPLAINED Satellite TV offers many advantages: better quality, more channels, and future-proof technology. We take a look at the most important things to consider. Things used to be a lot easier: The antenna on the roof did it all. Thirty years ago, there were so few channels that you could count them on one hand. The arrival of commercial TV in the 1980s increased the quantity, but not necessarily the quality, of channels on offer. Cable TV added even more channels, and suddenly viewers could choose from more than 30 programs at a time. But all of these channels were analog, whether received via cable or antenna. While the low-quality signal looked fine on the comparatively small, tube TVs of the time, this is no longer the case with modern flat-panels. Anyone who's tried to "admire" an analog TV signal on a 50-inch plasma TV will know how pitiful it looks: a lackluster, low-resolution picture, plagued by disturbances - in short, TV that'll turn you off. Today, on the other hand, viewers can receive their TV signals in five different ways - including (still) as an analog signal via cable and satellite. But analog technology is very much yesterday's news, and allows neither surround sound nor HDTV. Digital reception methods MAY
"Digital Video Broadcasting" (DVB) - are superior in every respect. They consist of three types of transmission: antenna (DVBT), cable (DVB-C), or satellite (DVB-S). The variety of content is another plus point: Satellite viewers can enjoy hundreds of radio stations and TV channels via, among others, the Astra (28.2째 East) and Eurobird 1 (28.5째 East) satellites. When changing your equipment for satellite reception, there are two key areas to watch out for: technical and legal hurdles. Reception will only work if the dish has a direct "line of sight" to the satellite - it must therefore point in precisely the correct direction.

DTH IN INDIA DTH stands for Direct-To-Home television. With the DTH service you have the option and the access to view television programmes directly from a satellite with the aid of a personal dish. and even an access point to the Internet. And that makes a good EPG more and more of a necessity for a broadcaster's success in today's highly competitive broadcasting market. The importance of the EPG resides in the ineffectiveness of conventional services in presenting what could be 500 channels worth of program information. It is almost impossible with teletext or newspapers to scan through that number of channels to see if there is anything good on, or if a particular program will be on today, or what's on right now. But EPG makes it possible to provide the viewer with a fully detailed description of the program: title, synopsis, casting, director, production year, etc.--and presented in multiple languages. This information is constantly updated since it is present on air with the video and audio streams. It can be accessed and downloaded any time the viewer requests it, and presented in an attractive way through colorful screens, with high resolution to show pictures of good quality, and an enhanced user experience thanks to flexible navigation. All these features make the EPG an appealing place for advertisers to put their ads, just in the same way they do on Internet pages, which means improved profits for broadcasters.

ith the enormous and everincreasing number of TV programs being offered nowadays—it could soon reach 500 digital channels worldwide—viewers are in need of help in navigating this myriad of options, a solution that will provide them with more information on the programs and give them a simple, easy-to-follow guide. Perhaps nowhere is this need greater, given the high density of satellite channels in general and highly competitive pay-TV platforms in particular, than in the Arab world. The high volume of offerings means that consulting the newspapers or a printed TV guide, or just waiting for that pretty presenter to introduce us to a used-to-be blockbuster movie, no longer works. The digital revolution in the broadcasting arena is the alternative, and the tool is the electronic program guide (EPG). EPGs are broadly known as being any program guide on a digital TV set, set-top box, or satellite receiver. They are a service provided by the broadcaster to the viewer at home, giving details about TV programs that are on air at that time or that will be broadcast in the near future. WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF SATELLITE TELEVISION?
Satellite television has a lot of advantages over cable television. It's all digital and you often get more digital channels for the price. But it's not perfect and it won't be the right choice for everyone. Sometimes cable television will be the right choice. The big problem everyone thinks about with satellite television relates to the weather. When the weather is particularly bad you can lose all reception, missing your favorite shows. In some areas this is a regular problem, while others will only rarely suffer. You may have to pay extra to get your local channels. This can be a major annoyance, as almost everyone wants to receive their local television channels. It has become more common for local channels to be included in the cost, but you should confirm this when you are considering satellite television. Sometimes you aren't able to get local channels through a satellite company. You may need more equipment with satellite television. Many plans come with free equipment for at least one television. However you may have to buy more equipment if you want reception for more than one television. Satellite television also generally comes with a one year contract.

This isn't too bad if you know you won't be moving, but if you aren't certain it can be financially painful. If you keep using satellite service when you move you should just be able to move your contract, but you may be stuck with fees for reinstalling your equipment. Another disadvantage is that the price of satellite television goes up with the number of televisions you want connected. This won't be a factor for every customer, but if like many families every person in your family has a television in their own room, the costs can add up quickly. While most people can get satellite television, not everyone can. If you don't have a place where the satellite dish has unobstructed southern exposure, you are not going to get good reception. This is an absolute for satellite television in the United States. It's due to how the satellites orbit the Earth; a physical limitation that cannot be changed. Despite these disadvantages, satellite is a great choice for many people. The range of channels you can receive is wonderful, picture quality is generally excellent, and the prices can be far better than what you would pay for a similar package with digital cable.

SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS The evolution of global communications and its rapid development has given rise to a strong interest in the television as medium. This has been clearly evidenced by the proliferation of antennas for the reception of satellite services throughout the Middle East. The content of much satellite programming is inconsistent with the culture and religion of the region, as it depicts excessive violence and highly unacceptable sexual behavior according to the mores of Middle Eastern culture. Yet, properly executed, satellite TV is also an excellent family device for entertainment, learning, and communication. Viewers are demanding more information, more entertainment and more news programs. Today television programming must meet viewer's expectations (and advertiser's desires as well) in order to attract viewers to a particular channel. In an atmosphere of heavy competition among stations, this cannot be achieved unless more creative programs and graphics are produced. In fact, one of the most noticeable differences between Eastern channels and Western ones is that the Western channels have a higher level of sophistication in their use of graphics and advanced technology. The present investigation was an MAY
exploratory examination of the satellite TV viewing motives of Egyptian adults. The researcher suggests future investigations on the impact of satellite TV on various ages in society, the sociological impact of satellite TV on Egyptian family social activities, and the possible impact of satellite TV on youth concerning their social, educational and economic behavior. Since news proved to be the most important program type watched by adult Egyptian satellite TV viewers, a special content analysis and comparison may be applied to come up with the format most favored by Egyptian audiences, especially with the recent launch of the Nile Specialized News Channel; the same applies to sports, drama, and children's channels. A content analysis of satellite TV channels most watched by Egyptian audiences could be conducted to investigate their favorite issues and formats. The number of hours spent daily with satellite TV did indeed prove to be longer than the number of hours spent with national TV among this sample. 86 percent of viewers in the satellite TV households reported that they watch satellite TV every day, whereas only 49.7 percent of the sample watch national TV every day. Much controversy is raised over satellite TV programming and content.

FREE-TO-AIR TRANSMISSION
Free-to-air (FTA) television (TV) and radio broadcasts are sent unencrypted and may be received via any suitable receiver: Free-toview (FTV) is, generally, available without subscription but is digitally encrypted and may be restricted geographically. Neither of these is pay-TV, which is an encrypted subscription (or pay-per-view) service. FTA is sometimes delivered by satellite television, but in various parts of the world free-to-air television channels are broadcast unencrypted on UHF or VHF bands. Although these channels are described as free, in some cases the viewer does in fact pay for them. Some are paid directly by payment of a licence fee (as in the case of the BBC) or voluntary donation (in the case of educational broadcasters like PBS), others indirectly by paying for consumer products and services where part of the cost goes toward television advertising and sponsorship (in the case of Japanese television broadcasters like TV Asahi and TV Tokyo which relies on sponsorship heavily, similar to Philippine Television like ABS-CBN, and GMA). One further variation is in Canada, where the CBC Television/TĂŠlĂŠvision de Radio-Canada network is partly funded by taxpayer dollars, and otherwise supports itself with commercial advertising revenues as it competes with other free over-the-air MAY
commercial networks. Free-to-air is often used for international broadcasting, making it something of a video equivalent to shortwave radio. Most authorized FTA retailers list free to air channel guides and content available in North America for free to air use. Australia has 5 free-to-air major networks, ABC, Seven Network, Nine Network, Network Ten, SBS, and the Community television channels, and three digital-only multichannels, 7TWO, Go! and One HD. These networks broadcast to major metropolitan areas, while various regional affiliates cover rural areas. Australia's two main government-owned TV channels, ABC and SBS, along with the digital-only multichannels ABC2 and SBS2, are both available free-to-air on the Optus D1 satellite. Viewers in remote parts of Australia can also access Seven Central and Imparja Television, or WIN WA and GWN in Western Australia, through the free-to-view Optus Aurora service. Other satellite-only channels such as NITV, TVSN, Expo, Press TV and Al Jazeera English are available free-to-air on various satellites. In Brazil the main FTA satellite is the StarOne C2, it holds approximately 30 C-band analog channels, including all major networks like Rede Globo, SBT, Record, RedeTV!, Band and others, and 5 digital HDTV channels.

Today Satellites are used for direct broadcast television, wireless cable, cellular telephone, photography, and video teleconferencing. The special sports programs, movies, and news broadcasts are all televised because of satellites. Artificial satellites have been launched to photograph the moon, Mars, Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter. Other satellites send information, back to the Earth about the weather of the Earth. A new satellite system is known as Planet 1. It integrates cellular and satellite technology to provide mobile voice, data, and facsimile communications. "The package weighs less than six pounds and the price is $2,995, plus a $3 a minute in use charges." (Miller, 134) By the end of the year, it is expected that Planet 1 service will be offered to countries all around the world. Direct Broadcast Satellite television is a very costly business. Wireless cable technology brings pay TV to rural areas. This technology works by beaming signals from a central tower to dishes on the roofs of houses or buildings. The new technology is cheaper than laying wires under the ground. Special satellites send pictures and messages from one continent to another . Dish antennas are used to send and receive information. A television show that is

broadcasted live from one country can also be seen in another country which is half way around the world. Communication services are now using small antennas to send and receive the information. Additional satellites are scheduled for launch that will enable new communication systems to be used around the world. Advances in the new Satellite Technology have made people no more than a phone call away. Satellites can send messages from one continent to another and also from one planet to another. Satellite technology brings us the weather, cellular phones, wireless cable, and direct broadcast television. Satellite communication companies are expecting these services to be offered all over the world in the very near future. Satellites are an up and coming force in the consumer market with many future plans ahead. New corporations such as Teledesic are revolutionizing the way satellites are manufactured and used. In addition, corporations like Motorola and Orbcomm are using satellites to provide global communication services. Finally, the scientific community is also taking advantage of the great possibilities that satellites represent in the field of research.

MAINTAINING A GOOD SATELLITE TV SIGNAL Once you have become a subscriber to Dish Network, you won't want anything to interrupt the fantastic Satellite TV programming that you will quickly grow accustomed to. Yet, there are several things that you will need to do in order to maintain a clear and adequate Satellite TV signal at all times. If you fail to conduct regular maintenance, you may be in for a rude surprise one day when you find that your Satellite TV images fail to appear on your television screen! So, what's involved in maintaining your Satellite TV signal? First and foremost, once your Satellite TV dish has been installed, whether it is on the side of your home or on your roof, you must always make certain that your Satellite TV dish has a clear pathway to the southern horizon. Why? The southern horizon is where the Dish Network satellite is located in the sky. The satellite receives signals from Dish Network, your Satellite TV provider, and resends the Satellite TV signals back down to the earth in an encrypted form. Your Satellite TV receiver then, in turn, decodes the information and displays the images sent on your television for your viewing pleasure. Now, if there is MAY

COMMUNICATION SATELLITES LAUNCHED IN FRENCH GUIANA A rocket carrying civilian and military communication satellites has deployed from South America after several delays that officials with Arianespace blamed on faulty equipment. The Ariane 5 was carrying the ASTRA 3B and the COMSATB w-2 satellites. The ASTRA 3B will provide direct-to-home broadcast services and twoway broadband services across Europe and the Middle East. The COMSATBw-2 will be used by the German military. Both satellites weigh a total of about 17,600 pounds. They were launched late Friday from French Guiana. Arianespace is the commercial arm of the 13-country European Space Agency.
RUSSIA, US TO CREATE FIRST JOINT SATELLITE NAVIGATION VENTURE The Russian Space Systems Corporation and the US Trimble Navigation Group have signed an agreement to create a joint satellite navigation venture in Russia, the Russian company has said. Each of the companies will hold a 50% stake in the Rusnavgeoset Company, which will produce Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) geodetic network infrastructure systems, a statement posted on Russian Space Systems' website said. "This high-technology, innovative sphere of activities directly contributes to the commercializing of

GLONASS," the statement said. GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System), the Russian equivalent of the US GPS (Global Positioning System), is designed for both military and civilian use. Both systems allow users to determine their positions to within a few meters. Federal and local government agencies, as well as large companies are expected to purchase the equipment to be produced by Rusnavgeoset.
NHK TO END ANALOGUE SATELLITE IN 2011
The Japanese public television network NHK has decided to cease analogue television services via the BS satellite at the end of March 2011, about four months ahead of schedule, sources familiar with the matter said on Saturday, according to news agency Kyodo. Japan is set to terminate all analogue broadcasting, both in terrestrial and satellite services, and shift completely to the digital format on July 24, 2011. The decision to end analogue broadcasts earlier was prompted by the desire to diffuse confusion amongst viewers. NHK is also set to consolidate its digital satellite services on the so-called BS (Broadcast Satellite) satellite. The state broadcasters currently offers three channels (BS1, BS2 and BShi) that will change into two new BS1 and BS2 channels, both of which will be in HD. At present, only BShi broadcasts in the format, while BS1 and BS2 air in SD quality. The new digital satellite services will all be in HD, with the new BS1 channel featuring mostly news programmes and the new BS2 channel entertainment and cultural programmes.

FRENCH CHANNELS AGREE ON DTH SWITCH-OFF The seven main French legacy broadcasters have agreed to a simultaneous switch-off of their analogue satellite DTH transmissions. All channels will switch off in November 2011, when the last French region will turn all digital. TF1, France 2, France 3, Canal +, France 5, Arte and M6 will no longer broadcast their analogue versions on the Atlantic Bird 3 satellite when the Languedoc Roussillon region ends all analogue broadcasts. Canal+ might switch off its analogue broadcasts at an earlier date, as the pay-TV broadcaster has its own time table for digital switch-over. All seven channels will continue to be available in digital format on two DTH platforms, TNTSat on Astra at 19.2 degrees East and Fransat on Atlantic Bird 3 at 5 degrees West. The free-to-view offer also includes all the other FTA terrestrial channels, including all 24 regional variations of France 3 and France O, the public channel for the French overseas territories. A smart card is needed, but no subscription fee is charged, for satellite reception.
QATAR SET TO LAUNCH SATELLITE IN 2012 Manama Qatar is set to launch its first satellite at the end of 2012 to provide superior coverage across the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia. The $300 million (Dh1.1 billion) deal to launch and operate the satellite, named Eshail, was signed in Doha by Qatar's Supreme Council

ORANGE 3D AVAILABLE FTA ON HOT BIRD Two 3D HD channels are currently broadcasting from the Hot Bird position at 13 degrees East, one of them transmitting free-to-air. French private broadcaster TF1 announced it will broadcast five FIFA World Cup games in 3D. Orange 3D TV will start broadcasting the Roland Garros tennis tournament in 3D from next week (May 31st) and is available free-to-air within the Hot Bird footprint. Most modern satellite receivers will be able to process the signal, but for the complete 3D experience, a special 3D screen is necessary. Alongside the Orange 3D signal, Eurosport 3D is also broadcasting on the same transponder with an encrypted signal. Eurosport 3D is also available on the Astra position at 19.2 degrees East and at the Eurobird position at 28.5 degrees East.

(Nazim Hussain, Karachi) Ans: Yes, there may exist situations where TV picture quality is reduced but probably only where there is already enough signal level for good quality pictures. An amplifier is not recommended or needed in these situations. You could also run into a problem if there is excessive tilt across the TV channel band. All this means is that the lower channels are at or above the level for good pictures and the higher channels are below the level for good pictures.

waves emitted by a lightning flash, with the assumption that tornadic thunderstorms were very active lightning producers. But, not all tornadic storms produce large amounts of lightning. And, TV's are all different and have different sensitivities, and some are even made to filter out lightning signals.

Have an additional line run to each TV that you want to receive the signal from the DIRECTV System receiver. This allows you to watch the same satellite programming on as many sets as you want. If you would like to be able to watch individual programming on each TV, you will need a dish with multiple outputs. A DIRECTV receiver and cable feed is required for each TV you would like to receive programing on.
Ans: The first thing to do is to confirm that it's truly extraterrestrial. Remember, with tens of millions of channels and antennas that are among the world's largest, SETI picks up signals frequently. An important test to verify that a signal is truly extraterrestrial would be a confirming observation at another radio telescope. Once an artificial signal is confirmed as being of extraterrestrial intelligent origin, the discovery will be announced as quickly and as widely as possible.

(Tahir Khan, Saudi Arabia) Ans: The best strategy for keeping a good strong signal is to keep the splitters to a minimum. When that can't be done, then an amplifier is your best bet. But even when using an amplifier you need to be very aware of where your cable modem is installed - if you have one. Usually the cable company will install a splitter very close to where the cable comes into the home, and run one connection to the cable modem, and the other connection to the TVs in the rest of the house.
FREQUENCY SIGNALS Can a digital satellite receiver use the radio frequency signals which are sent directly through the coaxial cable of cable TV? (Fazal Dad, Hyderabad) Ans: No, a digital satellite receiver receives signals between 900MHz and 2GHz from the LNB on the satellite dish. Cable frequencies are between 50MHz and 850MHz. Even if the satellite receiver could receive the cable frequencies there is a difference in the way that cable and satellite digital transmissions are modulated so it would still be incompatible.

The end component in the entire satellite TV system is the receiver. The receiver has four essential jobs: It de-scrambles the encrypted signal. In order to unlock the signal, the receiver needs the proper decoder chip for that programming package. The provider can communicate with the chip, via the satellite signal, to make necessary adjustments to its decoding programs. The provider may occasionally send signals that disrupt illegal descramblers as an electronic counter measure (ECM) against illegal users. It takes the digital MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 signal and converts it into an analog format that a standard television can recognize. In the United States, receivers convert the digital signal to the analog National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) format. Some dish and receiver setups can also output an HDTV signal. It extracts the individual channels from the larger satellite signal. When you change the channel on the receiver, it sends just the signal for that channel to your TV. Since the receiver spits out only one channel at a time, you can't tape one program and watch another. You also can't watch two different programs on two TVs hooked up to the same receiver. In order to do these things, which are standard on conventional cable,

you need to buy an additional receiver. It keeps track of pay-per-view programs and periodically phones a computer at the provider's headquarters to communicate billing information. Receivers have a number of other features as well. They pick up a programming schedule signal from the provider and present this information in an onscreen programming guide. Many receivers have parental lock-out options, and some have built-in digital video recorders (DVRs), which let you pause live television or record it on a hard drive. These receiver features are just added bonuses to the technology of satellite TV. With its movie-quality picture and sound, satellite TV is becoming a popular investment for consumers. Digital cable, which also has improved picture quality and extended channel selection, has proven to be the fiercest competitor to satellite providers. The TV war is raging strong between satellite and digital cable technologies as well as between the providers who offer these services. Once considered luxuries in most households, satellite and digital cable are becoming quite common as providers bundle TV with Internet and phone services to offer competitive deals and win over customers.

Television in South Africa was first introduced in 1976. Despite being the most economically advanced country on the continent, South Africa was among the last countries in Africa to introduce television broadcasting to its population. The country's white minority government, under the National Party, viewed television as a potential threat to its control of the broadcasting media, even though the statecontrolled South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) had a virtual monopoly on radio broadcasting. It also saw the new medium as a threat to Afrikaans and the Afrikaner volk, giving undue prominence to English. In 1971, the SABC was finally allowed to introduce a television service. Initially, the proposal was for two television channels,

one in English and Afrikaans, aimed at white audiences, and another, known as TV Bantu, aimed at black viewers. but when television was finally introduced, there was only one channel. Experimental broadcasts in the main cities began on 5 May 1975, before nationwide service commenced on 5 January 1976. In common with most of Western Europe, South Africa used the PAL system for colour television, being only the second terrestrial television service in Africa to launch with a colour-only service. The Government, advised by SABC technicians, took the view that colour television would have to be available so as to avoid a costly migration from black-and-white broadcasting technology.

THE BEGINNING OF SATELLITE TV
Maybe we haven’t conquered outer space yet, but there’s little argument that we have made bang-up progress since the first attempts to get into the heavens. The space age actually began in 1946, when captured German V-2 rockets were used to take measurements in the upper atmosphere. Prior to this, scientists used balloons that went up about 20 miles and radio waves were used to study the ionosphere. This continued to about 1952. The US had been considering launching orbital satellites since 1945 under the Bureau of Aeronautics of the United States Navy. The U.S. Air Force at first considered satellites to be a tool for science, politics, and propaganda. Following pressure by the American Rocket Society, the National Science Foundation, and the International Geophysical Year, military interest picked up and in early 1955 the Air Force and Navy were working on Project Orbiter, which involved using a Jupiter C rocket to launch a little satellite called Explorer 1 on January 31, 1958. Meanwhile, in 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the earth’s first artificial satellite. It sent back the first images of outer space, beating the United States by one year, and resulting in the first satellite MAY
transmissions from room. From that we have evolved to what we take for granted today in terms of satellite television. This is considered the beginning of the room race between the U.S and the U.S.S.R. This contention between the Soviet Union and the United States pretty much ushered in the beginning of satellite intercommunication. By 1973, Canada’s satellite Anik I became the world’s first satellite television network. It was primitive by today’s standards, but it was a start. Today, the method of Satellite TV has gotten very effective: we now get clear signals, reliable transmission, and several providers that guarantee that there’s always something good to watch. And, with VCRs and TiVo you can record your favorite shows and watch them when it’s convenient for you. The coach potatoes of this today thus began their affections for TV satellite networks. HBO began broadcasting their signals to cable companies, who sold you access to the channel via subscription. The problem, naturally, was that for every channel you subscribed to you had to pay a little extra.
