Satellite TV providers get programming from two major sources: national turnaround channels (such as HBO, ESPN and CNN) and various local channels (the ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and PBS affiliates in a particular area). Most of the turnaround channels also provide programming for cable TV, and the local channels typically broadcast their programming over the airwaves.

the stream contains a vast quantity of data - about 270 megabits per second (Mbps) for each channel. In order to transmit the signal from there, the broadcast center has to compress it. Otherwise, it would be too big for the satellite to handle. In the next section, we'll find out how the signal is compressed. Satellite television is television programming delivered by the means of communications satellite and received by an outdoor antenna, usually a parabolic reflector generally referred to as a satellite

Satellite TV Programming Turnaround channels usually have a distribution center that beams their programming to a geosynchronous satellite. The broadcast center uses large satellite dishes to pick up these analog and digital signals from several sources. Most local stations don't transmit their programming to satellites, so the provider has to get it another way. If the provider includes local programming in a particular area, it will have a small local facility consisting of a few racks of communications equipment. The equipment receives local signals directly from the broadcaster through fiber-optic cable or an antenna and then transmits them to the central broadcast center. The broadcast center converts all of this programming into a high-quality, uncompressed digital stream. At this point,

dish, and as far as household usage is concerned, a satellite receiver either in the form of an external set-top box or a satellite tuner module built into a TV set. Satellite TV tuners are also available as a card or a USB peripheral to be attached to a personal computer. In many areas of the world satellite television provides a wide range of channels and services, often to areas that are not serviced by terrestrial or cable providers. Direct-broadcast satellite television comes to the general public in two distinct flavors - analog and digital. This necessitates either having an analog satellite receiver or a digital satellite receiver. Analog satellite television is being replaced by digital satellite television and the latter is becoming available in a better quality known as high-definition television.

The Russian market of pay-TV is one of the largest in the world: in the 2012 it had 31.9 million households connected via cable, satellite and IPTV. According to J'son & Partners Consulting, subscriber growth will continue, and by 2017 the number of subscribers will reach 40.2 million DH, or 74% of all TV homes. At the end of 2012 subscriber basic pay TV in Russia amounted to 31.9 million, which is 11% higher than in 2011 pay TV, when penetration was 58%. Satellite TV and IPTV showed the biggest growth in the years 2011-2012. IPTV subscriber base increased 1.6 times and satellite DTH grew 19%. The growth of satellite TV subscribers is mainly due to Tricolor TV. For 2012 Tricolor TV has added 2.4 million new subscribers, increasing its base to 11.9 million households. J'son & Partners Consulting said the increase of pay-TV subscribers for Tricolor TV in 2012 was 1.4 million households (8.9 million paying subscribers in 2012 against 7.5 million paying subscribers in 2011). In general, the Russian segment of pay satellite TV for the year increased by 1.9 million households, so the contribution of Tricolor TV to the growth of the segment was 74%. The rapid growth of IPTV was due to increased broadband penetration, which has reached 48%. The market leader for IPTV are Rostelecom, VimpelCom and MTS. The growth rate of cable TV is slowing down with operators upgrading their networks to DVB-C and adding new services such as video on demand, catchup-TV and others. The largest players in the pay-TV market Russia in 2012 are Tricolor TV (market share 28%), Rostelecom (21%), MTS (9%), ER-Telecom (7%) and Academ (4%). In 2012, cable television accounted for more than half of all pay-TV subscribers (58%), a decline of 4% compared to 2011. Share of satellite TV was 34% and IPTV increased to 8%. Advertising in Russia's pay-TV industry is now growing at twice the rate of that in the free to air (FTA) market. First half data produced by the Association of Communication Agencies (AKAR) and published in the local press shows that it amounted to R1.78 billion (â‚Ź40.51 million) or 24% more than a year earlier, while that

for FTA service grew by 12% over the same period, though to a much higher R73.7 billion. Internet advertising in H1 amounted to R31.2 billion and total ad spend stood at R155 billion, a 12% increase on a year earlier.

Free-to-air TV Market Needs More Players The dominance of TVB in the broadcasting industry owes much to the way it manages artistes and singers. It is well known that there are rules restricting performers from appearing on other television channels. While this is no doubt an effective business strategy to keep talent to itself, it is also criticised by rivals as abusive and unfair. After a three-year probe, the Communications Authority ruled that the broadcasting giant had abused its dominant market position to prevent competition. It said unreasonable contracts had enabled TVB to warehouse performers at minimal cost, making it difficult for rivals to compete on fair grounds. The ruling, along with a HK$900,000 fine, is in line with the prevailing public sentiment. It addresses the long-standing problem of unfair competition in the industry. Some restrictions are hardly justifiable. TVB artistes in TV series shown on other channels need to have their voices dubbed.

NOVEMBER

More bizarre is the unspoken "no Cantonese" rule for artistes interviewed by other stations. They speak Putonghua instead, fearing TVB would retaliate by giving them less exposure or fewer awards. The watchdog said the rules were made to make rival channels less appealing to viewers. That TVB has rejected the ruling is unsurprising. It argues that the incentive to groom artistes will be dampened if they can switch to rivals at any time. The broadcaster is entitled to appeal.

Putting outside antenna on the roof would likely improve reception, if antenna is in an attic the roof & shingles will reduce signal level. Sometimes moving the antenna to different location may help. I have had viewers move antenna 4 ft and improve signal level & stability. Digital is all or nothing unlike analog where the signal would get snowy as signal level is reduced. Once signal drops below a useable level a DTV receiver will show nothing. Although when signal is right on the edge you may see freezes or blocking in video. This would indicate you are at the edge of what we call the digital cliff. If your previous analog reception was marginal or with some snow, then you will likely have difficulties with digital reception. Anything you can do to improve signal level will help stabilize reception. Here and below is some info that may help improve reception. Now that the DTV Transition is completed and all stations have changed to their final DTV channels, be sure to scan for channel changes as convenient. Consumers having difficulty receiving certain television channels following the June 12 transition to digital TV should try these tips for better reception: “double rescanning,” and double checking and relocating their antennas. Meanwhile, local broadcasters are working to resolve those

issues that originate with their signal. You must have a VHF/UHF antenna. “Rabbit ears,” rods, or other elements are needed to pick up channels 2-13 (VHF), and a circle, bow-tie, or other element is needed to pick up channels 14-51 (UHF). Some antennas marketed as HDTV antennas don't perform well on VHF channels; some antennas are VHF or UHFonly. For the best reception of channels 2-6, extend the rods all the way out. For the best reception of channels 7-13, reduce the length of the rods to 12-18 inches. The location of an indoor antenna is key. And one of the most popular spots for indoor antennas – on top of the TV – may not be the best. Consumers having trouble with digital TV reception should try moving their antennas to one of these locations. Also antenna position or direction is important. Adjust antenna direction while looking at signal meter level on your receiver for highest level and most stable picture. Antenna with best UHF gain is important. You may want to try a higher gain UHF antenna or separate UHF only antenna.

Connected TV is the future of Digital Cable Internet Connected TV or TV with Web2.0 features is a technology that uses cable as well as Cat 5 cable (Ethernet connection) to connect with the set-top-box. For Example a Smart TV device is either a television set with integrated Internet cap abilities or a set-top box for television that offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a contemporary basic television set. Smart TVs may be thought of as an information appliance or handheld computer integrated within a television set unit, as such smart TV often allows the user to install and run more advanced applications or plugins/addons based on a specific platform. Smart TVs run complete operating system or mobile operating system software providing a platform for application developer. There is a wide scope of internet connected TV. People normally use laptop for this but now it will be done through easy GUI for the persons especially using television. Different companies make different type of OS, some use Windows, some use Linux and others use Mac which is programmed in the set-top-box, therefore set-top-box

becomes a computer with wide access of internet on the television. Smart TV platforms or middleware have a public Software development kit (SDK) and/or Native development kit (NDK) for apps so that third-party developers can develop applications for it, and an app store so that the end-users can install and uninstall apps themselves. The public SDK enables third-party companies and other interactive application developers to “write applications once and see them run successfully on any device that supports the smart TV platform or middleware architecture which it was written for, no matter of who the hardware manufacturer is. If you are shopping for a new television, you have likely discovered there are many features to consider. With more and more homes having broadband connections and wireless networks, there has been a realization that being able to access the internet from your TV would be convenient and desirable. There are now many internet connected TV sets available. These televisions give you access to websites on the screen. Internet connected TV can certainly provide significantly more information and entertainment content by virtue of this connection. An Internet-enabled TV is a set that is factory designed to connect directly to the Web and display content such as YouTube videos, weather reports and streaming movies or television shows.

The advantages of satellite There are many advantages to using satellite broadcasting. It's one of the most common wireless systems, with some distinct features. While terrestrial radio and television broadcasting and mobile phones rely on a network of ground-based transmitters and

receivers, satellite broadcasting systems move the transmitter from the ground to the sky by mirroring the ground transmission. This means a satellite can cover almost onethird of the earth's surface from its position in space and so serve a huge area. Achieving the same coverage with groundbased, terrestrial systems would require a large, expensive network. Satellite transmission allows services to be quickly introduced since coverage is available for everyone from the start, even those in the most remote locations who often have to wait years for a terrestrial service. This allows everyone to enjoy the same level of service as someone living in the centre of a major city. Satellites naturally cross national boundaries, providing numerous possibilities for truly international services. Using satellite to broadcast television is familiar to most people now. Satellites

NOVEMBER

deliver hundreds of television channels every day across Europe, the United States, the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. They are also used to supply television signals to terrestrial transmitters and to exchange signals between television studios. But it's not just broadcasting that makes use of satellites. Satellite communication systems are also being used to relay high speed Internet, link phone networks and provide high-speed corporate networks, connecting offices and sites across the world. YahLive's state of the art satellite network provides customers with key competitive advantages by employing the latest technology. Advantages like higher powered and focused beam coverage in a prime orbital location, dish reception size of just 45-60cms and a capacity optimised to provide the bandwidth required to carry the highest quality content all set YahLive apart from the rest. Satellite TV is arguably a novel communication and entertainment phenomenon. The earliest form of satellite TV was the satellite Sputnik that was a Russian advent in 1957, but the receptivity of this early innovation was lousy. A brief history of satellite TV will tell you that the innovation began making its impact in the 1960s when governments and the corporate sector began taking an interest to invest in space communication. The space race between Russia and the western countries ironically contributed to the development of more receptive satellite communication that would include telephones and computers as mediums.

Around two-thirds of free-to-air (FTA) satellite television channels in the Arab world have an online presence, according to new research. Of the 658 fully operational FTA channels targeting the Middle East and North Africa via the Arabsat, Nilesat, Noorsat and Yahlive satellites, 68% (448) have an online presence, says Jordan-based Arab Advisors Group. “The results show that a majority of the 448 channels that have online presence lean more towards an enhanced online presence. Furthermore, 21.7% of channels with an online presence generate online revenues from their supporting online presence, such as online advertisement, online shopping, etc,” said Hind Qweider, senior research analyst, Arab Advisors Group. Those channels with corresponding portals portraying the channels' services and content, and where the integration between the satellite channel and its online presence is strong, are considered to be offering an enhanced online presence by the researchers. “Almost 42.7% of the satellite channels have online presence for promotional purposes only and do not aim at generating online revenues. 20.2% of the channels that have online revenue generating features have an enhanced online presence,” added Dalia Haddad, research analyst, Arab

The researchers found that a number of satellite channels with a basic internet site, with relatively weak integration between its services and content, intend to enhance their online presence. Latin America's direct-to-home (DTH) market will grow quickly over the next five years, from around 22 million subscribers in 2012 to over 46 in 2022, according to consulting company Northern Sky Research (NSR). Most of this growth will be experienced up until 2017, when 40 million Latin Americans are expected to use a satellite platform. The region's characteristics make it a good growing field for the DTH market, with Latin Americans currently representing almost 20% of the world's DTH subscribers. The NSR report also predicts that the region will experience the fastest growth over the coming years, especially among basic package subscriptions. Longterm, premium HD subscribers will also see growth accelerate, as the middle-class is expected to grow solidly throughout the region. According to the report, DTH penetration rates in the region are around 14%, and an increase in uptake of DTH services by existing TV households is also expected.

which already carries Europe's first dedicated Ultra HD channel. "UltraHD is the future of TV and the technology is now commercially viable with regards to affordability of products and processing power," said Michael Zoeller, senior director, European sales and marketing at Samsung. "With this world first UltraHD channel broadcasting directly to a consumer TV set via satellite, Samsung is once again reinforcing its technical leadership in UltraHD displays. UltraHD broadcasting standards are expected to be finalised soon and our products are futureproof thanks to the evolution kit that supports current and future transmission standards." Markus Fritz, director of commercial development and marketing at Eutelsat, added: "Having launched the first demonstrations of UltraHD in January 2013, we are delighted to take the most exciting development in TV to a new level with Samsung. As a core broadcasting infrastructure for the direct delivery of UltraHD content to consumer TV sets, we are proud to demonstrate once again Eutelsat's pioneering role in driving innovative TV broadcasting technologies for the broadcast industry." With over eight million pixels, four times the resolution of today's full-HD displays, UltraHD enables viewers to sit closer to the screen and benefit from a much higher immersion. However, a lack of 4K content is something that's been a big obstacle to the adoption of 4K TV sets and general uptake by consumers. At IBC 2013, several satellite ecosystem players and vendors announced significant investments aimed at breaking the logjam. Eutelsat Communications and Samsung announced that they're launching a dedicated UltraHD satellite channel that can be received directly by Samsung's latest UltraHD TVs. Also, HISPASAT, which provides satellite capacity to Latin America, Spain and Portugal, is launching its own 4K channel at the show.

Pay-TV industry is stuck in subscriber doldrums

The US pay TV industry hit subscriber doldrums in the second quarter, with cable TV losing customers and telecoms' Internet TV service replacing satellite services such as Dish Network and DirecTV as the one TV distribution sector that added viewers. An SNL Kagan analysis of cable, satellite and telecom companies' second-quarter subscriber trends shows U.S. video providers collectively had 200,000 fewer subscribers in the second quarter than they did a year earlier. Most of the losses came from cable TV, which lost 1.8 million customers nationwide in the 12 months ending June 30, according to SNL Kagan, a Charlottesville, Va.-based analysis company. Cable TV's market share among the 100.2 million subscribing households nationwide dropped to 55.3 percent. “The phone companies continued to take video share from the cable and satellite TV incumbents despite uneven footprint expansion in the first half of 2013,” SNL Kagan concluded, noting that telecoms added 400,000 net subscribers in the second quarter and “topped 10.7 million total video customers as of mid-2013.” That's still smaller than satellite TV providers Dish Network Corp. (Nasdaq: DISH), based in Douglas County, and

NOVEMBER

DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV), based in El Segundo, Calif. The two companies combined have 34 million subscribers — Dish with 14 million and DirecTV with 20 million — but they've been stuck at roughly that figure for several quarters. “The largely single-play offerings are meeting resistance above the 34 million subscriber level,” the SNL Kagan reports said. US pay TV service providers together lost 366,000 subscribers in the second quarter of this year, an 11% improvement on the loss posted for the same period a year ago, according to SNL Kagan. The research group said that combined cable, telco and satellite subscribers numbers remained 200,000 below the figure for the second quarter of 2012, although the total is 121,000 up on the figure for 2011. Cable increased its rate of attrition compared with the first quarter, losing 607,000 customers. However this was a slight improvement on a year ago, according to SNL Kagan. Cable's share of combined subscribers has dropped to 55.3%, according to the research group. DTH operators lost 162,000 subscribers in the quarter while IPTV service providers gained 400,000, taking its total to about 10.7 million.

High-definition television in the United States was introduced in 1998 and has since become increasingly popular. Dozens of HD channels are available in millions of homes and businesses both terrestrially and via subscription services such as satellite, cable and IPTV. In June 2011, Nielsen Media Research reported that 75.5 million American homes (two-thirds of all homes) contain at least one HDTV. It is not clear whether broadcasting HDTV or multiple standard definition (SD) channels during non-primetime hours will become common. Many Public Broadcasting Service member stations are now carrying SD multicasts when not broadcasting in HDTV; but unlike many commercial stations, most of these multicasts are suspended while HDTV programs are being broadcast. The prevailing expectation is that native HDTV (i.e., programming recorded with a digital HDTV camera) during primetime will predominate. The great majority of primetime television shows in the United States are available in HDTV at the network level. It is up to the affiliates, not all of which have HDTV broadcast capability, to retransmit these shows at HDTV resolutions. A number of nonprimetime shows, including morning news shows and some soap operas, are also

NOVEMBER

available in HDTV. HDTV sets became available in the US in 1998 and broadcasts began around November 1998. The first public HDTV broadcast was of the launch of the space shuttle Discovery and John Glenn's return to space; that broadcast was made possible in part by Harris Corporation. The first commercial broadcast of a local sporting event in HD was during Major League Baseball's Opening Day on March 31, 1998, the Texas Rangers against the Chicago White Sox from The Ballpark in Arlington in Arlington, TX. The telecast was produced by LIN productions and broadcast locally on Fort Worth, Texas NBC affiliate KXAS channel 5. This telecast was also the first commercial HD broadcast in the state of Texas. The first major sporting event broadcast nation wide in HD was Super Bowl XXXIV on January 30, 2000. Satellite television companies in the United States, such as Dish Network and DirecTV, started to carry HD programming in 2002. Satellite transmissions in the U.S. use various forms of PSK modulation. A separate tuner is required to receive HD satellite broadcasts. Cable television companies in the US generally prefer to use 256-QAM to transmit HDTV.

How does GPS work?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a network of about 30 satellites orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 20,000 km. The system was originally developed by the US government for military navigation but now anyone with a GPS device, be it a SatNav, mobile phone or handheld GPS unit, can receive the radio signals that the satellites broadcast. Wherever you are on the planet, at least four GPS satellites are 'visible' at any time. Each one transmits information about its position and the current time at regular intervals. These signals, travelling at the speed of light, are intercepted by your GPS receiver, which calculates how far away each satellite is based on how long it took for the messages to arrive. Once it has information on how far away at least three satellites are, your GPS receiver can pinpoint your location using a process called trilateration. Imagine you are standing somewhere on Earth with three satellites in the sky above you. If you know how far away you are from satellite A, then you know you must be located somewhere on the red circle. If you do the same for satellites B and C, you can work out your location by seeing where

NOVEMBER

the three circles intersect. This is just what your GPS receiver does, although it uses overlapping spheres rather than circles. The more satellites there are above the horizon the more accurately your GPS unit can determine where you are. GPS satellites have atomic clocks on board to keep accurate time. General and Special Relativity however predict that differences will appear between these clocks and an identical clock on Earth. General Relativity predicts that time will appear to run slower under stronger gravitational pull – the clocks on board the satellites will therefore seem to run faster than a clock on Earth. A GPS navigation device is a device that receives Global Positioning System (GPS) signals to determine the device's location on Earth. GPS devices provide latitude and longitude information, and some may also calculate altitude, although this is not considered sufficiently accurate or continuously available enough (due to the possibility of signal blockage and other factors) to rely on exclusively to pilot aircraft. GPS devices are used by the military, by aircraft pilots, by sailors, and for recreational purposes by the public.

A Personal Video Recorder (PVR) is an interactive TV recording device, in essence a sophisticated set-top box with recording capability (although it is not

necessarily kept on top of the television set). Vendors and media also refer to the units by these names: digital video recorder (DVR); personal TV receiver (PTR); personal video station (PVS); and hard disk recorder (HDR). Like the familiar VCR, a PVR records and plays back television programs, but, unlike the VCR, it stores the programs in digital (rather than analog) form. Like a VCR, a PVR has the ability to pause, rewind, stop, or fast-forward a recorded program. Because the PVR can record a program and replay it almost immediately with a slight time lag, what seem to be live programs can be manipulated as though they were recorded programs (which they actually are). A PVR's capabilities include time marking, indexing, and non-linear editing. The PVR encodes an incoming video data stream as MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 and stores it on a hard disk within a device that looks much like a VCR. Most PVRs come as part of a subscriber service that may or may not charge a monthly fee. The service enables such activities as searching for shows according to type (movies or baseball games, for example), choosing among video-ondemand (VOD) options, or doing shopping or banking. Service providers, such as TiVo

NOVEMBER

eco rde r (P VR)

and ReplayTV, may also sell PVRs. There are a number of PVRs on the market, including TiVo's DVR, SONICblue's ReplayTV, Sony's SVR-2000, and Philips' PTR. There are also products that offer similar functionality but are software-based (such as SnapStream Personal Video Station) or network-based. The Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) Project is an industry consortium dedicated to the development of standards for PVRs and other digital video technologies. There are a number of controversial issues surrounding the capabilities that PVRs and similar technologies enable. For example, ReplayTV makes it possible to skip through commercials by using a 30-second "autoskip" function. This capacity is popular with consumers, but not with advertisers. Another feature, the ability to download programming from the Internet and to send files to friends, is similarly unpopular with service providers, since it can enable a user who hasn't paid for a service (such as HBO) free access.
