LETTER FROM EDITOR Dear Readers, All current communication satellites are earthsynchronous or geo-stationary. This means they circle the earth in a specified orbit, at the same speed as the earth itself. As a result, they appear to stand still. All geo-stationary satellites revolve around the earth at a height of 36,000 km, precisely over the equator. Here, the centrifugal and gravitational forces of the earth are in equilibrium, ensuring that the satellites stay in their position and do not fall back to earth. Their speed is approximately 11,000 km per hour and the distance to Central Europe is approximately 41,000 km. As neither the distance nor the position over the equator changes, transmission and receiving stations can remain fixed, maintaining their aim at the satellite. Non-geo-stationary satellites are used for applications such as weather observations, military surveillance and experiments. Most of them orbit the earth at a lower altitude than the geostationary satellites. Their orbital speed must therefore be faster, or else the earth's gravity would pull them down. Fixed Service Satellites (FSS) are satellites designed to transport telephone calls, data transmission and TV signals for broadcasting and cable organizations. Because these satellites have a relatively low power output of 10-20 watts per transmitted channel, it means that a large dish antenna is required for good reception. (Less power means a weaker signal which is harder to pick up, therefore requiring a larger antenna.) However, the advantage of low power satellites is that more programs can be broadcast.

CHINA'S FIRST MARS ORBITER IN RUSSIA FOR LAUNCH China's first satellite to probe Mars has been transported to Russia for a launch later this year, state media reported. Yinghuo-1, the 110-kilogramme (242-pound) Chinese satellite, is scheduled to be launched along with Russia's "Phobos Explorer" aboard a Zenit rocket in October after final testing, the Beijing News said. After entering Mars' orbit -- 10 to 11 months later -- the orbiter will probe the Martian space environment, with a special focus on what happened to the water that appears to have once been abundant on the planet's surface. The satellite, developed by the Shanghai Space Administration, will carry eight pieces of equipment including two cameras, the report said. China became the third nation to put a man into space when Yang Liwei piloted the one-man Shenzhou-5 space mission in 2003. China will launch a space module next year and carry out the nation's first space docking in 2011 as a step towards its goal of building a space station, state media said earlier.
SKY CONFIRMS 3D TV LAUNCH
BSkyB has announced plans to launch the UK’s first 3D television service. The move comes after the satcaster reported the highest increase in subscriber numbers for five years. The launch of push VOD is also slated for 2011. The new 3D channel is expected to offer a broad mix of programming including movies, entertainment and sport. It will use the existing HD infrastructure, meaning that the 1.313 million Sky+ HD households will already have the reception technology in place, though the purchase of a compatible 3DTV set will be required. The move is
SEPTEMBER
GLOBAL FLASH NEWS likely to be greeted with accusations that Sky has jumped the gun, introducing its own choice of technology before the final standards have been set. Brian Sullivan, MD of Sky’s consumer group, said the satcaster’s subscribers had already futureproofed themselves with the purchase of a Sky HD box. “3D is a genuinely ‘seeing is believing’ experience, making TV come to life as never before. Just like the launch of digital, Sky+ and HD, this is latest step in our commitment to innovating for customers.”
NEW TV CHANNEL FOR BULGARIA
Bulgaria’s Council for Electronic Media (CEM) has awarded Darik Radio a licence to operate a new TV channel. According to Novinite, the service will be known as DRT TV and make its debut by the end of this year. Darik Radio was launched in 1993 and is currently Bulgaria’s only privately owned national commercial radio station.
ISRAEL DTT GOES NATIONWIDE
Israel’s new digital terrestrial service went live on August 2. The nationwide multiplex is running the European DVB-T system with MPEG-4 compression. Five channels are carried in the free-to-air multiplex: IBA 1, IBA 33, Channel 2, Channel 10 and the Knesset Channel. A seven-day EPG is also included and even though there are no HD channels at present the IDAN Plus (Israeli Accessible Digital Channels) system requires users to have an HD compatible receiver. Boxes can be purchased for around NIS400 (€70) with subsidies for half the cost available for certain population groups. The Beseq-managed network is running 13 main transmitter sites with plans to upgrade relay services in the near future. Analogue switch-off is slated for 2011.

Direct to Home Services or DTH is becoming increasingly acceptable these days. There are a handful of reasons for this. With a DTH connection at your home, you can rest assured of continuous entertainment without worrying about a cable failure. The images displayed are more vivid, colorful and attractive that the normal cable. There are also options for choosing your favorite channels only, thereby saving unnecessary expenses. It is no wonder that everyone wants to install Internet Protocol Television at his or her homes. This spurt of demand has brought in a big group of Internet Protocol Television and DTH Service providers who are vying to garnet a piece of the pie. The vide variety available may bamboozle an uninitiated buyer. Tall words, promises, advertisements
SEPTEMBER
etc may misguide people. So it is imperative that you first look for product reviews of all the biggest players in the field before selecting one. The initial charges of different service providers vary. So does the charge levied per channel. Most of these players provide many free to air channels absolutely free of cost to get new buyers. But many educational channels and sports channels are not free at all. The service providers mix and match all things to create an attractive package. You may have now understood that how complex the world of IPTV and DTH services are. There are chances that you may end up with a DTH connection, which is not at all suitable to meet all your needs. But there is no need to be worried here. BSNL, Tata, Reliance, Airtel, Sub network, Dist TV, Videocon etc are some of the leading players in the field. Product reviews on each of these services are available now, which you can use if required. Go through them, compare them, evaluate them in the long and a short-term perspective and then only buy. Such an approach would fetch you brilliant dividends. Now that analog television is officially over, the concentration is on digital and HD TV. HD TV is necessary for the larger screen televisions. The flat screen televisions have a might higher resolution capability. Movies generally have a higher quality of resolution than regular TV programme.

TYPES OF ANALOG TRANSMISSIONS
There are two basic kinds of analog transmission, both based on how they modulate data to combine an input signal with a carrier signal. Usually, this carrier signal is a specific frequency , and data is transmitted through its variations. The two techniques are amplitude modulation (AM), which varies the amplitude of the carrier signal, and frequency modulation (FM), which modulates the frequency of the carrier. Most analog transmissions fall into one of several categories. Until recently, most telephony and voice communication was primarily analog in nature, as was most television and radio transmission. Early telecommunication devices utilized analogto-digital conversion devices called SEPTEMBER
modulator/demodulators, or modems , to convert analog data to digital data and back. Analog transmission is still very popular, in particular for shorter distances, due to significantly lower costs and complex multiplexing and timing equipment is unnecessary, and in small "short-haul" systems that simply do not need multiplexed digital transmission. However, in situations where a signal often has high signal-to-noise ratio and cannot achieve source linearity, or in long distance , high output systems, analog is unattractive due to attenuation problems. Furthermore, as digital techniques continue to be refined, analog systems are increasingly becoming legacy equipment.

FLOPPYDTV HDTV RECEIVER PC CARD Even at first sight the FireDTV Viewer impresses with its sleek, cleverly laid out and easy to use appearance. The manufacturer went at great lengths to avoid overpowering users with a main screen that is full of buttons, features and adjustment options. Thanks to this strategy even absolute beginners will not be overwhelmed by an endless variety of settings and thus should be able to use the software after only a short while. The main window displays the selected TV channel in presentation mode (full screen) or any desired size. Only when the mouse cursor is moved to the outer right section of the window does a channel list pop up. This way no valuable space is wasted by a permanent channel list display. The control bar is located at the lowest end of the FireDTV Viewer and can be used to control the viewer. Altogether it boasts eleven buttons, which are (from left to right): play/pause, record, timer, previous channel, search, one channel down, one channel up, volume, mute, teletext and EPG. Above the control bar a second bar indicates the cur-rent position during playback. It can also be used to move to another position thanks to time shifting during playback and recording. There are no dedicated buttons for fast forward and fast rewind, but thanks to the time shift bar this is no real loss. SEPTEMBER
DIGITAL RECEIVER VANTAGE VT-X111SCX The “digital satellite receiver” market is currently booming and so it should come as no surprise that one “new receiver” after the other is finding its way into our test labs. The VT-X111SCX is the newest entry into this market from the German manufacturer “Vantage”. Just taking the receiver out of the package gives you the immediate impression of a sleek and elegant box that should have no trouble fitting in with any living room environment. The front panel is very nicely equipped in addition to the obligatory buttons for operation of this box with a missing remote control, there is also a four digit display as well as a card reader and a set of CI slots hidden behind a flap. This receiver is available in three different versions: as a simple “FTA receiver“, as a CI box and also as one with embedded Conax. The rear panel is also very pleasing to the eye. You have the IF input with looped-through output, the two Scart connectors, three RCA jacks for video and stereo audio outputs, a coaxial digital audio output, an RS-232 serial interface to link this box to a PC, a UHF modulator and a main power switch. What more do you want? The included remote control sits nicely in your hand with buttons that are very logically arranged and easy to read. Overall, the workmanship of the receiver and remote control left us with a very good impression.

Descrambler Gives you A Much
Clearer Picture
Satellite television has grown leaps and bounds, nothing only technologically but in popularity as well. A few top satellite television networks have the major market share in the television viewing industry, top two namely being Dish Network and Direct TV. There have been many changes in the field of electronics and technology recently. The technical advancements presented by these top satellite television networks are warmly welcomed by people worldwide. A satellite descrambler is one such device that garners much attention. In fact, a descrabler is a card. This satellite card has software installed in it that has the capability in it to make the viewing experience possible. The quality of picture and images is enhanced by the use of this software. Users of this small card can now can access the DVD quality pictures and images through the satellite descrambler. A small fee might be applied to take advantage of this kind of technology, but many people use it as it improves the overall television viewing experience. The descrambler is one of the most important components you should have when it comes to enjoying your satellite television viewing experience. If you don't have a descrambler card, you might have trouble viewing your favorite programs. The images will not be clear, and you'll get mostly scrambled programming. This will make for an unpleasant viewing experience, so thus the presence of a descrambler is a much-needed piece of equipment that shouldn't be overlooked. When it comes to quality many people are there who are not worried what they need to pay for it. At least good quality guarantees you a satisfaction which many low paying products cannot offer. The price one needs to pay for a descrambler is not fixed. Actually, few of the service providers charge a little for it, yet others may charge more as they include it in a satellite package deal. The list of channels and the quality also depends on the package you choose. Choose wisely, as not all satellite TV packages are created the same. Sometimes people like to build their own satellite television descramblers. There's some study into this one the internet, but the legality of it shouldn't be forgotten. Stealing satellite television is considered a crime, and can be punishable by law.

Inside view n order to understand the history of satellite television, you first have to go all the way back to the 1950's during the space race between the USA and Russia. The first satellite to orbit the earth was Sputnik, launched by the Russians in 1957. It was 6 years later until the first communications satellite was launched. This satellite was developed by both large corporations and government entities. It was called Syncom II and flew in an orbit circling 22,300 miles over the Atlantic Ocean. Using this satellite, the first telecommunications took place between a

communications as the main means of distribution to network affiliates through 1984. At this point, many people that lived in rural areas that weren't able to view normal broadcast television bought DTH (direct to home) satellite dishes. These dishes were several feet in diameter and were used to pick up television broadcasts from satellites overhead. However one of the disadvantages of sending signals via satellite was the ability for almost anyone to receive the signals for free. Pay TV stations went to court to fight
US Navy ship in the harbor in Nigeria and a naval station in Lakehurst New Jersey, USA in July of 1963. However, it wasn't until 15 years later that regular television signals were transmitted via satellites. Television started to broadcast with satellite on March 1, 1978 and from this point all of the major television networks adopted this style of
for the right to restrict access to their TV signal. However, the FCC ruled against TV stations and stated that it had an "open skies" policy. This ruling stated that if TV stations had the right to broadcast signals over satellite, the public had the right to receive the signals. At this point the TV broadcasters decided to encrypt the signal. While anyone can receive the signal, in order to view programming, not only would they have to have a satellite dish, but also a decoder. With the demand for satellite televisions growing, the FCC in 1980 established regulations for direct broadcast satellites or DBS, this would be a new service that would consist of broadcast satellites rotating around the earth in geostationary orbit. In order to view the broadcast signal, consumers would need a satellite dish to receive signals and special equipment to decode the encrypted signals.

MAKING THE BEST SATELLITE
DECISION
If you've watched any television in the last 24 hours you've probably seen an ad for a satellite television company. Often times these commercials promise many things to entice you into making a purchase. Free months of service, free equipment, and free installation are often mentioned as reasons why you should go with a particular service. These days it is extremely confusing when trying to make an informed buying decision. There are two main companies that are currently selling satellite television service. Both DISH Network and DirecTV offer excellent programming, a clear signal, and a quality customer service experience. So, you might be asking yourself, which one is better? Good question. Let me provide a few of the differences and similarities so that you may make a decision. Channel Selection - Both satellite companies offer similar channel selections. From my experience DirecTV offers a wider range of programming. You'll have to decide for yourself which channels are most important and then check each provider to see whether they're carried. If your a sports fan, both providers offer all of the MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL packages for your SEPTEMBER
viewing pleasure. Music Channels - I'm a huge fan of this optional service. If you enjoy satellite television or are just interested in commercial-free radio you might be interested in learning that both satellite TV providers have teamed up with satellite radio providers to offer you a great additional service. DISH Network is working with Sirius satellite radio to bring you music channels on your television while DirecTV has partnered with XM satellite radio. Both bring excellent sound and musical choice to the television. Price - The price of service varies greatly depending upon the package of service you select. Since price changes so frequently my best advice is to compare both and see which provides the better deal. Free Equipment - Both DISH Network and DirecTV now offer HDTV and DVR service. If you have an HDTV television you may be able to get a free receiver that will allow you to receive transmissions in HDTV. Both satellite TV providers now offer this option. In conclusion, you really can't go wrong with whichever choice you make. Whether you go with DirecTV or DISH Network is dependent upon your personal preferences.

Optical Fiber Cables
Replace Coax
Com pared to coax, optical fibre cables have substantial benefits in distribution of satellite TV signals. However there are – or rather have been - barriers for use of fibre technology in multi dwelling and singlefamily home installations: Optical transmitters have been excessively expensive and handling of fibre cables has required complicated and expensive tools. As these barriers are now removed, the advantages of fibre will save installers of both time and material costs. Additionally fibre technology allows signals from one LNB to be distributed to a much larger number of outlets and at almost unlimited distances. The properties of coax cables add challenges, work hours and sometimes tough technical problems to the everyday life of TV installers. It is only habit – and of course the lack of an alternative – that leads installers to accept the time and trouble needed to cope with high cable loss, electromagnetic interference and restrictive limits to the number of outlets and the distance that can be covered from one LNB and in one multiswitch installation. The limitations of coax become more and SEPTEMBER
mor e evident, as set-top boxes include more than one tuner, and the number of set-top boxes in each household increases. Suddenly an ordinary single home installation requires a bundle of coax cables from LNB to outlets. And in multi dwellings the capacity of existing head-end or multiswitch systems can not meet the needs of an expanding number of advanced satellite receivers. Satellite signals are high frequency signals (950 – 2.150 MHz) and cable loss in this frequency area is much higher than in the frequency area of terrestrial signals. For each 100 meter of coax cable, satellite signals loose 18-32 dB. Cable loss of course can be compensated by amplifiers, but amplification magnifies both signal and noise and so, there are tight limits to the number of outlets and the distance you can reach in coax cables and with usable satellite signals. The physical laws that apply to fibre cables are very different from those of coax cables. In fibre you have practically no cable loss (0,03 dB compared to 18-32 dB per 100 meter in coax) and you have absolutely no electromagnetic interference. Furthermore fibre cables are much less expensive than coax and with increasing prices on the copper used in coax cables, the price difference will continue to grow.

LAUNCHING
T
he dream of exploring the universe has now come true. Korea will soon be ready to launch its own satellite from its own soil. In the 1950s and 60s the US and Russia, the two most powerful countries in the world then, shot satellites competitively into Earth orbit and soon landed someone on the moon. It is known that outer space is 100km or higher above the Earth. It is no man's land like the open sea. It is free to be used by any nation or possibly by anyone if they can get there. It is costly to launch a satellite into orbit. Moreover, launching it towards the moon is much more so. Exploration of solar satellites such as Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are long-range projects, as well as searching for any traces of water and the possibility of living organisms. However, these costly projects are now becoming priceless for our survival. Looking into the global future, we feel imminent apprehension that fossil fuels, our major energy resource at present, are running dry. British historian Arnold J. Toynbee (1889-1975) once said that when the source of energy runs out then human SEPTEMBER
SATELLITE
beings would suffer from unyielding destitution forever. However, we should not sit here and wait for the end of the world. Now, space exploration is not just fun and games. Even emerging economies like China and India are desperately pursuing their own space programs. For example, China launched its first satellite in 1970 and a manned vehicle in 2003 followed by an unmanned moon satellite in 2007. China is planning to take a manned vehicle to the moon in 2017. India started probing space in 1975 to conduct scientific research. And it is preparing to go to the moon with a manned vehicle in 2020. Japan has been the most aggressive in Asia since it started its space program in 1970. In September 2007, it launched the first Asian moon probe and plans to set up a manned moon base in 2030. The reason countries are so eager for space programs is simply a survival strategy. The Earth is so small to live in and the danger from global warming is approaching. Humankind has to find a new place possessing clean energy, rare metals and a new means of wealth for a new era with constant supplies.

INMARSAT
SATELLITES
Inmarsat was established in 1979 to serve the maritime industry by developing satellite communications for ship management, distress and safety applications. Inmarsat currently operates a global satellite system that is used by independent service providers to offer a range of communications services for customers in remote locations. An intergovernmental structure presently with 84 member countries, it has since expanded into land, mobile and aeronautical communications, so that users now include thousands of people who live or work in remote areas without reliable terrestrial networks, or travelers anywhere. The original Inmarsat spacecraft were built by an international consortium headed by British Aerospace. Subcontractors included Hughes Aircraft Company (USA), Fokker (Netherlands), Matra (France), MBB (Germany), NEC (Japan) and Spar (Canada). Satellite ground control operations contractors included CLTC (China), CNES (France), SED (Canada), Telespazio (Italy) and Intelsat. Inmarsat owns and operates the world's most advanced fleet of commercial mobile communications spacecraft, flying in geostationary orbit, 35,786km (22,240 statute miles) above the Earth. This includes two latest generation SEPTEMBER
satellites, the Inmarsat-4s (I-4s), which were launched in 2005. Together, they provide coverage to around 85 per cent of the world's landmass and 98 per cent of the world's population. Inmarsat is also planning to launch a third I-4 satellite in the end of 2011. This will deliver complete mobile broadband coverage of the planet, except for the extreme polar regions. Inmarsat's first wholly owned satellites, the Inmarsat-2s, were launched in the early 1990s, and the Inmarsat-3s - the first generation to use spot beam technology followed later in the decade. The total fleet now comprises 10 satellites. The I-4s set a new benchmark for mobile satellite communications in terms of their power, capacity and flexibility. One I-4 satellite is 60 times more powerful than an Inmarsat-3, and the I-4 fleet is expected to have a commercial life until around 2020. Inmarsat has also entered into agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to become the commercial operator of a new satellite called Alphasat. The satellite is part of an ESA initiative to develop a new spacecraft platform capable of carrying a large communications payload. Alphasat is scheduled for completion in 2012 and will supplement the existing I-4 satellites. It will provide service over Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

INDIAN
SPY SATELLITE
Giving a big boost to its defence surveillance capabilities, India on Monday successfully launched an all-weather Israeli-built spy satellite that will help security agencies keep a vigil on the country's borders. The Indian Space Research Organisation's workhorse PSLVC12 rocket soared majestically into a clear sky at 6.45 am from the spaceport in Sriharikota and placed its first Radar Imaging Satellite and micro-educational satellite ANUSAT into orbit about 19 minutes later. The 300 kg RISAT-2 will primarily keep an eye on the country's borders round-the-clock and help in antiinfiltration and anti-terrorist operations. A jubilant ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said, "The year 2009 has started off well. The final moments of the launch were more thrilling than a cricket match as we hit a few boundaries and bowled some googlies." Nair said the performance of the PSLV-C12 launch vehicle was 'precise and on the dot'. "Again, we have set a record. As in the past, we declared the launch date, time and we made it happen," he said. Adding that the RISAT2 would be a good asset to national resources, he said, "I am sure it is going to serve the country well." India's newest eye in the sky has the capability to maintain vigil on the country's borders even at night and through clouds. The satellite, built with SEPTEMBER
Israeli cooperation, enhances significantly India's capabilities in earth observation as it can track minute movements on land, sources said. Till now, Indian satellites operated only in the visual range and RISAT-II, for the first time, uses microwave frequencies to track the earth. Though ISRO maintains that it will use the satellite for disaster management purposes and weather forecasts, the satellite imagery data can be made available to defence forces for securing the national borders. RISAT-II has all-weather capabilities to take images of the earth and would also be beneficial in mapping and helping in managing natural disasters, such as floods and landslides, they said Different from previous remote sensing satellites, RISAT-II uses Synthetic Aperture Radar, equipped with many antennas, to receive signals that could be processed into high-resolution pictures. The SAR, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, equips RISAT-II with defence capabilities, the sources said. India has been developing its own RISAT but since the project was delayed, it was decided to seek Israeli help in building the SAR, the sources said. The SAR payload can take images during day, night and in all weather conditions, including through cloud cover, a capability that Indian satellites did not have till now.

HOW TO EASILY BOOST YOUR TV SIGNAL? Nothing ruins a TV show experience like distorted, unclear and fuzzy images due to weak signals. Weak signals are caused by damaged antennas, large buildings, hills and distance from the main signals. There are many simple steps you can take and cheap purchases you can make to improve your TV signal and give you the best picture possible.
By following a few simple guidelines, you can minimize snow, noise and sound distortion and have a more pleasant TV watching experience. Reposition your antenna or satellite dish. Place the antenna or dish on a surface that's at least 30 feet higher to increase the signal. Place an indoor antenna close to window. Keep indoor antennas away from electrical appliances such as computers. Electrical appliances interfere with your antenna because of static. Check your antenna cables for wear and tear. Use coaxial cables to improve the transfer of signals to your TV. Use a preamplifier or TV signal booster SEPTEMBER
to strengthen the signals at the antenna before it has a chance to weaken through the coaxial cables between the TV and the antenna. Install a distribution amplifier, especially if you have a TV in more than one room. A distribution amplifier moves the signals around to different locations. Check your antenna or satellite for cracks and other damage. Have them repaired or replaced whenever possible. A fully functioning antenna will give you a better signal. Purchase and install a digital converter box if you are using an analog TV. Digital signals are not subject to static interference like analog signals. Your images will have less noise and snow. A digital TV signal is a transmission containing audio and video information that is broadcast by a television station and delivered to a user's home, either via cable, satellite TV or a digital antenna. When a television station broadcasts its programming, the signal is taken from its audio and video form and compressed into a signal fit for transmission. The signal is then transmitted to a satellite in space, where it is then sent back down to various television towers all around the country. These towers then broadcast the signal that your antenna picks up in your home. When it gets to your home, the TV tuner converts the signal back into its original audio and video form.

Digital Terrestrial
THE ARAB WORLD'S SATELLITE CHANNELS
Digital Terrestrial Television (DTTV or DTT) is an implementation of digital technology to provide a greater number of channels and/or better quality of picture and sound using aerial broadcasts to a conventional antenna (or aerial) instead of a satellite dish or cable connection. The technology used is ATSC in North America and South Korea, ISDB-T in Japan, Brazil and Peru, DVB-T in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Colombia, Uruguay and some countries of Africa, and DMB-T/H in China (including Hong Kong); the rest of the world remaining mostly undecided. ISDB-T is very similar to DVB-T and can share front-end receiver and demodulator components. DTTV is transmitted on radio frequencies through the airwaves that are similar to standard analog television, with the primary difference being the use of multiplex transmitters to allow reception of multiple channels on a single frequency range (such as a UHF or VHF channel). The amount of data that can be transmitted (and therefore the number of channels) is directly affected by the modulation method of the channel. The modulation method in DVB-T is COFDM with either 64 or 16 state Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM). In general a 64QAM channel is capable of transmitting a greater bitrate, but is more susceptible to interference. 16 and SEPTEMBER
64QAM constellations can be combined in a single multiplex, providing a controllable degradation for more important programme streams. This is called hierarchical modulation. New developments in compression have resulted in the MPEG4/AVC standard which will enable two high definition services to be coded into a 24 Mbit/s European terrestrial transmission channel. The DVB-T standard is not used for terrestrial digital television in North America. Instead, the ATSC standard calls for 8VSB modulation, which has similar characteristics to the vestigial sideband modulation used for analogue television. This provides considerably more immunity to interference, but is not immune - as DVB-T is - to multipath distortion and also does not provide for single-frequency network operation (which is in any case not relevant in the United States). Both systems use the MPEG-2 transport stream and video codec; they differ significantly in how related services (such as multichannel audio, captions, and program guides) are encoded. DTTV is received via a digital set-top box, or integrated receiving device, that decodes the signal received via a standard aerial antenna. However, due to frequency planning issues, an aerial with a different group.

CONSTRUCTING SATELLITE
TV SYSTEMS Satellite television viewing is the way to go. In the present era most of the customers like viewing television via satellite television network services than by using any other means. In this era there is a whole lot of competition and there is no compromise on quality as the customers go for the product which is the best in quality. As a result, people prefer watching satellite television today. There are certain components which are needed to complete a satellite television network system. If you have all these components you can watch television via satellite. If this is not the case, you will not be able to watch television through satellite. If you read through this article you can find the way to construct your own satellite television system. In this way you will not need to pay monthly subscription fee to the satellite service providers. You will be able to have more choice and the quality of the product will also be equally good. First of all, you'll need a satellite dish. It is the most important and integral part of the satellite television network system. This antenna catches signals from the satellites which are up there in the atmosphere. The SEPTEMBER
signal sending and receiving satellites are basically man made satellites which are especially designed and released in their orbits for this purpose. The dish antenna will help you get the signals from those satellites. You need to mount your satellite dish on some mount. For this purpose you need a mount which must be portable and of the size which can support a dish antenna. Although the dish antenna needs to be fixed atone place but if your dish mount is portable still that is alright. After getting the Dish and its mount, you will need an amplifier. The amplifier is as important to the system as the dish antenna itself is. The amplifier will be able to block the noise and thus the transmission will be much clearer. You will also need a satellite receiver. There are many types and many versions of the same available in the market. It depends on you which type you prefer. Price may be the deciding point for you in this regard. You also need some charts which can help you find a satellite. Also, you need satellite finder of both the varieties.

When it comes to the latest technology, nothing beats the world of high definition. Two of the leading satellite television providers, DIRECTV and DISH Network, have even included in their products HDTV receivers, which offers subscribers access to high definition channels like HBO HD and ESPN HD. HDTV channels are broadcasted using a digital signal that only produces images that are very detailed. Watching your favorite sports or movie channel will never be the same as soon as you experience HDTV. To be able to enjoy this at the comfort of your own home, you will have to subscribe to one of these HDTV providers. Your television should be HDcapable and the rest of the equipment will be supplied by the HDTV provider of your choice. The equipment will include an HDTV satellite dish and HDTV satellite receiver. For the HD-capable television, you can choose from the many LCD and plasma television being sold in the market. Their prices typically range from $300 to $900. On the other hand, the HDTV satellite receivers provided by DISH Network and DIRECTV both feature Dolby Digital Surround System and programmable channels and menus which you can customize to suit your preferences.
SEPTEMBER
These HDTV receivers can be connected to your home theater or stereo system if you want to enjoy the ultimate in television entertainment. You will also be guaranteed of excellent quality images with 1080i resolution. Aside from the standard HDTV receiver, you can also choose to have a receiver with digital video recorder combination or the HD DVR receivers. These receivers possess recording features so you will no longer have to worry about missing your favorite shows. What is even more amazing is the ability to record them in HD format and up to 200 hours of television programming. The only noticeable difference between the DIRECTV and the DISH Network receiver is that DISH Network will offer you their HDTV receiver for free while DIRECTV can provide you with a free HDTV receiver in the form of a $99 rebate, once you subscribe to their services. Since HDTV satellite receivers would come with an HDTV satellite dish, it would also be nice to know the difference between those provided by DIRECTV and DISH Network. Both satellite television programming providers offer their satellite dishes for free as well as their installation.

FIRST IMAGES RECEIVED FROM DUBAISAT-1
DubaiSat-1, the UAE's first satellite, has transmitted its first series of UAE images from orbit, including a snapshot of the Palm Jebel Ali. The Emirates Institution for Advanced Science & Technology (EIAST) received the images. His Excellency Ahmed Al Mansoori, Director General of EIAST, said the successful images are an indication of diverse capabilities to be realized imminently. "These quality images of
relevant phenomena such as the Palm Jebel Ali are the first fruits of DubaiSat-1. After processing and analysis, the satellite's images will provide information and data that serve the UAE's development and assist in decision-making. EIAST will work with various government authorities and establishments to deliver the needed imaging," he said.
NO CHANCE FOR ANOTHER SATELLITE OPERATOR TO ENTER THE MARKET Rapid TVNews reports that there are four satellite operators dominating Middle East and North African broadcasting: Arabsat, Nilesat, Eutelsat and Noorsat. However, these four players occupy just two dominant orbital positions, Arabsat’s 25.5 deg East, and Nilesat’s at 7 deg West. Eutelsat has colocated satellites at both positions and where it leases capacity to Noorsat. Now Noorsat’s CEO says there’s no space for another operator to enter this market. “No other player can easily get into the DTH TV market,” said Omar Shoter, Noorsat’s CEO. “It takes between 40-60 million homes to be pointed at your new satellite, in order to be profitable.” Noorsat is a virtual satellite company. It owns no satellites itself. It is itself owned by broadcaster Orbit, which is merging its pay-TV assets with Showtime. SEPTEMBER
AROUND THE SATELLITE WORLD Noorsat is not part of the merger. Shoter was referring to two newcomers to the Arabian broadcasting scene: SmartSat, operating out of Kuwait, and YahSat, out of Abu Dhabi. YahSat is working with SES Astra to commercialise its upcoming satellite launch, and has just hired away Arabsat’s CCO, Mohamed Youssif, to head up its efforts. YahSat 1 is due for launch towards the end of next year.
BBC DIGITAL CHANNELS COME TO GERMANY British public broadcaster BBC wants to export its new digital pay-TV channels to 16 foreign countries, including Germany, Michael Kayser, German representative of commercial arm BBC Worldwide, confirmed to German industry publication Kontakter. Kayser, who is evaluating market interest in the services in Germany, is seeking carriage deals with platform operators via cable, satellite and IPTV. Talks
are underway with leading market players such as Kabel Deutschland, Unitymedia and Sky Deutschland. The channels will be adapted for the German market. BBC’s international portfolio comprises BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle and BBC Entertainment as well as the high definition service BBC HD. The channels are already available in several markets, including Scandinavia, Poland and South Africa.

(Sarfaraz Naeem, Karachi) A: First, check your cable connections. If you are satisfied with the connections, it could be your decoder module. Measure the diameter of your dish and convert this value to inches. Measure the depth of your dish in the middle by placing a flat board across the center of the dish and measuring from the board to the dish. Multiply the diameter of the dish by itself.

If this doesn't fix the problem, try pulling the decoder module out of the receiver and letting it sit out for an hour before reinstalling and testing. Third, try deleting that satellite from the receiver's memory and reprogram it in.

ecause satellite television is such a superior way of watching television, one that is affordable, reliable, and varied, there are now millions of subscribers. Most people that have switched over from standard and cable television to satellite now enjoy a much broader range of programming opportunities. Typically, people that watched television with cable were accustomed to a handful of channels but with satellite, an entirely new world of possibilities opens up. While there are any exciting genres that go along with satellite television, the one that seems to hit the hardest has to do with sports. For the sports enthusiast, watching programming via satellite television and in high definition is an experience difficult to describe. The clarity of every game, interview, and special coverage is so clear that it is almost as if sitting in the front row while being there in person. People that love sports and watch using satellite television in high definition have the ability to subscribe to a full season of numerous professional events, while watching special commentary programming and viewing SEPTEMBER
several games at a time. The great thing about satellite television with high definition is that the viewer is not limited to only national sports and games. Instead, satellite opens the door to international events too. This means a person that loves soccer could actually watch European games throughout the entire season, never missing any of the action. Additionally, subscribers get more with satellite, meaning they have the option of seeing games that are never broadcast on cable TV. However, along with the list of international sporting events, people with high definition satellite television can also watch games from their hometown. What people need to remember is that the reason this technology works is that satellites are out in space, orbiting and sending down signals from every country in the world. Therefore, programming with satellite television is not prohibited to one state or one country. Instead, the viewer chooses the programs or exclusive programming interested in and as a result, gets games and other sporting events from around the globe. With satellite television and high definition, subscribers get an added bonus in that many broadcasters from all over the world are also making their signals available.

SATELLITE TV Software
S
atellite TV service has undergone series of revolutions in the recent past. Among the new innovations is the use of software to watch satellite TV on the personal computers. To many folks this new means of watching satellite TV is strange while others will see it as a welcome development due to its uniqueness. The overview of this software will be x-rayed in this article in a bid to acquaint all and sundry about the software and how it works as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using it. The software like any other software is written in high level programming language for the computer hardware to decode and take necessary actions contained in the set of commands which characterizes the program. The software is digital and could be installed from digital storing devices or downloaded directly from a website in the internet on the personal computer. There is no need for dishes, cables and decoders. There is no recurring monthly, quarterly or annual subscription as the case may be in the use of this software. Once it is purchased and installed, the installer will be able to access over 3000 SEPTEMBER
different channels from around the world. It can be utilized anywhere you have internet access on your computer system. You can watch programs from your home country from a far land where most of the satellite TV providers do not telecast programs from your home country, region or tribe. With this software, you can overcome the parochial telecasting approach of many satellite TV providers by having more than enough stations to choose from. This software will help you to know what is happening in different parts of the world that are not properly covered by the popular satellite TV services. One of the basic challenges of this software is your ability to have an internet facility that is fast. When using an internet facility that is not fast, the resolution of the pictures will be poor and sometimes they will be freezing when watching and the sound will be crackly. There may be this challenge of choosing from so many stations. This may be stressful to many hence there may be the possibility of not being patient enough to search out the best stations while they are hidden within the programme.

There are two basic kinds of analog transmission, both based on how they modulate data to combine an input signal with a carrier signal. Usually, this carrier signal is a specific frequency, and data is transmitted through its variations. Early telecommunication devices utilized analogto-digital conversion devices called modulator/demodulators, or modems, to convert analog data to digital data and back. Analog transmission is still very popular, in particular for shorter distances, due to significantly lower costs and complex multiplexing and timing equipment is unnecessary, and in small "short-haul" systems that simply do not need multiplexed digital transmission. However, in situations where a signal often has high signal-to-noise ratio and cannot achieve source linearity, or in long distance, high output systems, analog is unattractive due to attenuation problems. Furthermore, as digital techniques continue to be refined, analog systems are increasingly becoming SEPTEMBER
MODES OF TRANSMISSION
legacy equipment. Recently, some nations, such as the Netherlands, have completely ceased analog transmissions on certain media, such as television, for the purposes of the government saving money. Analog transmission is a transmission method of conveying voice, data, image, signal or video information using a continuous signal which varies in amplitude, phase, or some other property in proportion to that of a variable. It could be the transfer of an analog source signal using an analog modulation method such as FM or AM, or no modulation at all. Some textbooks also consider pass band data transmission using a digital modulation methods such as ASK, PSK and QAM, i.e. a sinewave modulated by a digital bit-stream, as analog transmission and as an analog signal. Others define that as digital transmission and as a digital signal. Baseband data transmission using line codes, resulting in a pulse train, are always considered as digital transmission, although the source signal may be a digitized analog signal. Less formally than the theoretical distinctions mentioned above, two main types of signals encountered in practice are analog and digital. In short, the difference between them is that digital signals are discrete and quantized, as defined below, while analog signals possess neither property.

About
Satellite
Dishes
First of all you have to know what you want to watch, the quality of a signal and the level of service. The price of a set will depend on these points. So we want to acquaint you with devices which are required. Let’s begin from a satellite dish. The quality of a signal is up to dish’s diameter. For different powers different diameters are necessary. Naturally that the more diameter is the more a dish’s price is. There is another important parameter in addition to diameter which determines a multiplication factor of a satellite dish. This parameter is the ratio of a focal distance and a diameter. Satellite dishes differ in a shape and a type of a hanger bracket. The shape may be offset or prime focus. The prime focus dish is the classic round dish with a head which is fastened on three spokes in centre of the dish. The offset dish has the ellipsoid shape. Its focus is displaced. There are two types of hanger brackets. They are azimuth (Az-El mount) and polar (Polar mount). The azimuth hanger bracket is hard-fast hanger bracket. A satellite dish directs at a satellite and SEPTEMBER
fixes on a fastening. The azimuth dishes are very simple in placing and you can do it yourself. The polar hanger bracket can rotate. The main sense of the polar hanger is possibility of receiving a signal from different satellites. As a rule the offset dishes have the azimuth hanger bracket and the prime focus dishes have the polar hanger bracket. But at last time mixed facilities are found. Dishes differ in structure. They may be as unbroken as collapsible. Course unbroken dishes are better because they ensure higher quality of a signal. A stuff which a dish is done from is different. It may be plastic. It’s light but frail and the quality of signal is worse than dishes from another stuff have. It also may be steel. It’s firm and has a good quality of signal, but it’s heavy and prone to corrosion. And at last it may be aluminum. It doesn’t corrode, it is light. But aluminum is rather soft so it endures blows badly. Time takes a toll on your c-band satellite dish and can cause loss of reception and picture quality.
