S
eyahat kısıtlamaları birçok ülkede gevşetilmesi bizim gibi fotoğrafçıları oldukça heyecanlandırdı. Artık baharın da kendisini gösterdiği şu günlerde, fotoğrafçılar; planlarını yapıp, rotalarını belirlemeye başladılar. Biz de boş durmayıp sizler için dolu dolu bir dergi yaptık. Oxford Photographic Society’ den Dave ve Bharat, misafirimiz olacak. Biri Vahşi Yaşam konusunda, diğeri ise kendi vatanı olan Hindistan’a ait Tuğla Işçileri isimli belgesel çalışmasını paylaşacaklar. Belgesel konusunda ülkemizin değerli iki fotoğrafçısı Tuğba ve Fatma, harika iki belgesel sunum hazırladılar ve bunları sizlerle paylaşma heyecanını yaşıyoruz. Figen, bize zevkle okuyacağımız ve not alacağımız, seyahat fotoğrafçılığını anlattı ve bir çok ipucu paylaştı. Sadece ülkemizde değil eminim dünyanın birçok yerinde hayranlık ve kıskançlıkla izlenen Sihirbaz Serkan’in en dikkat çeken çalışmalarını göreceksiniz. Tabii ki nisan ayı seçilmiş kareleri her ay olduğu gibi bu ay da sizlerle olacak. Son bir söz de geçen ay bizleri yalnız bırakmayan fotoğraf dostlarına olacak. Desteğiniz bizleri çok sevindirdi, sizlerden gelen her eleştiriyi dikkate aldığımızı ve sizler için içerik olarak dopdolu bir dergi üretmeye çalıştığımızı bilmenizi isteriz. Hep birlikte dayanışma ve dostlukla.

owadays travel restrictions have been relaxed in many countries and that makes us really excited. While spring is coming, photographers started to make their plans and determine their travel routes. In the meantime, we made an effective and full of content magazine for you. Dave and Bharat from the Oxford Photographic Society will be our guests. They will share their documentary works, one on Wildlife and the other on Brickworkers in his homeland, India. Two valuable photographers of our country, Tuğba and Fatma, have prepared two wonderful documentary presentations and we are excited to share them with you. Figen told us about travel photography, which we will enjoy reading and taking notes, and shared many tips. You will see the most remarkable works of the Wizard Serkan, who is being watched with admiration and jealousy not only in our country but also in many parts of the world. Of course, April’s selected photos will be with you again this month. A final word will be to the photography friends who did not leave us alone last month. We are very happy with your support, we want you to know that we take into account every criticism come from you and we are trying to produce a magazine that is full of content for you. Dave Atkinson first became interested in photography when he visited his grandparents and was given a couple of broken bellows cameras to play with. He never actually took pictures with them but enjoyed playing with them and the seed was sewn. The first camera used was a “Halina Paulette”, which his parents gave him for a birthday present. It had a fixed lens and used 35mm film so he had to get use to selecting apertures and shutter speed etc., as well as focussing. His subjects were mainly portraits of family and friends with occasional forays into athletics and other sports and also animals in zoos and safari parks. The latter giving him an early interest in a genre which he much later went back too.

DAVE ATKINSON’s “WILD LIFE” Series
The Halina Paulette lasted until he purchased an Olympus OM10, in the 1980s, which he continued to use for the genres already mentioned in addition to recording his children as they grew up. However, it was in 2005 when Dave and his wife planned a safari that he decided to invest in a Canon EOS20D to take to Kenya, where he had his first taste of photographing African wildlife.

1980’lerde bir Olympus OM10 satın alana kadar Halina Paulette ile fotoğrafa devam etti. Ailesini ve çocuklarını kaydetmenin yanı sıra spor ve vahşi yaşam fotoğrafları çekmeye devam etti. 2005 yılında Dave ve Eşi bir safari yolculuğuna çıkmaya karar verdi, Kenya’ya yapacakları seyahat için Canon EOS20D marka bir fotoğraf makinesi aldı. This was the catalyst leading him to develop his passion for nature and wildlife photography. Whilst these and other trips with his wife also got him interested in travel photography. Dave has been a member of Oxford Photographic Society for about ten years and during that time he has achieved recognition within the Society and outside, picking up awards and prizes, both at club level and in UK and international salons. Dave has recently applied for an AFIAP accreditation and is currently working towards a distinction with the RPS.

Dave’s outlook on his work is best summed up as he says he strives to try and capture something a bit different, he looks for impact and pictorial quality in his images. Dave enjoys the photography of Bence Mate and Andy Rouse amongst others and is inspired by fellow photographers from his club.

Mersin doğumluyum. Çukurova Üniversitesi Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi Matematik Bölümü ve Anadolu Üniversitesi Fotoğrafçılık ve Kameramanlık Bölümü mezunuyum. 2012 yılında AFAD’da başladığım fotoğraf yolculuğuma karma sergiler, atölye ve proje çalışmaları ile devam ettim. Ulusal ve uluslararası fotograf yarışmalarında birçok madalya ve ödüller alarak 2019 yılında AFIAP, 2020 yılında EFIAP unvanlarını aldım.
I was born in Mersin. I graduated from Çukurova University Faculty of Science and Literature, Department of Mathematics and Anadolu University Department of Photography and Camera. I started dealing with photography in AFAD in 2012 and continued with group exhibitions, workshops and projects. I received many medals and awards in national and international photography competitions, and I deserved the titles AFIAP in 2019 and EFIAP in 2020.

In 2019, I won the Sille Art Palace Yurdagül Özsavaşçı prize with my project named “Seyyah”. In the same year, I achieved the success of the 1st round of the Seyit Ali Ak cup with my photo presentation named “Hemdem” and 2nd round with the “Ask For the Impossible” photo show in 2020. In the 2nd Efod Mimar Sinan Cup photography contest, I won the 1st round success with my project named “Sermest”.

I think that photography is not just pressing the shutter button, but also needs to be feed with different branches of art and in this way. So I try to improve myself with literature, painting and ceramic art in this direction. 20 X-POSURE - APRIL 2021
“Ask For the Impossible” I had to find such a name for my project consisting of the photographs I took in Cuba which should both describe me and show the spirit of the place I saw. I named my project based on the words of Che Guevara, one of the leaders of the Cuban revolution, “Be realistic, Ask for the impossible.”

This phrase expresses the spirit of Che, the country and my opinion very well. I tried to explain a different Cuba in the project. The country of tired people struggling to survive. Cuba, where the revolution is inadequate to keep its promise to the people.

Pembe çiçeklerle bezenmiş bir adayı tepeden izlediğinizi düşünün ya da yaşlı-çocuk demeden birbirlerine renkli boyaların atıldığı sokaklarda dolaştığınızı. Belki de adını bile söyleyemediğiniz bir tapınakta yaşlı teyzelerle muhabbet etmeye çalıştığınızı ya da bulutların üzerinden uçsuz bucaksız bir manzarayı seyrettiğinizi. Imagine watching an island adorned with pink flowers from above, or wandering the streets where colorful paints are thrown at each other without saying old or child. Maybe you are trying to chat with old aunts in a temple you cannot even say the name of, or you watch an endless view over the clouds. This feeling of travelling seems invaluable to me. Being able to convey the travel experience that appeals to each sense is a different skill, by the way. Travel photography is perhaps the most captured type of photography today. Although it is viewed by some in a simplistic way as “traveling” photographs, it is actually a very comprehensive branch that includes many main genres.

The American Photography Society (Photographic Society of America) presents travel photography with a “time-space feeling; describes a place as a photograph that depicts the people, culture and natural state of that place and does not contain geographic boundaries ”. In this sense, we can consider travel photography as a branch that combines many genres such as portrait, architecture, landscape, nature or street photography. Go deep, observe Travel photography is not just about going somewhere, I think. The real adventure begins when you try to get to know a place better. Staying longer than you planned or going more than , helps you understand the spirit of that place, of the culture. In this sense, one needs to be patient and persistent. Maybe you should focus on one place instead of seeing everywhere. In this way, you can get the chance to get rid of superficiality and make it visually more beautiful. If you’re shooting a monument or building, try to understand what it represents. This is how you can find the most beautiful image that expresses it. The right angle, weather, or light can help you with this.

Try to get to know about the new product before the trip. The menu of a machine I borrowed last minute before my last trip had a menu so different from the machine I had used until that day caused a great trouble to me for example. Finally, I turned into automatic mode and returned from the trip with only memory photos in my hand.If you ask what the right equipment is, it is actually very relevant to your style of photography. Wide angle or zoom lens, if you like details, macro lenses will be useful for you on these trips.

You should definitely consider the climatic characteristics of the region you are visiting and the characteristics of the event you want to shoot. You should have a light tripod with you if you have no problem with carrying it. You should consider the details that will protect your bag and raincoats for your machine, spare equipment from water -cold- dust. If you are going to walk to distant places, you should keep materials such as spare batteries and cards ready. Before you go, a versatile equipment list will make your job easier.

I had one of my hardest time in travelling photography was in India, where I went to the Holi Festival. Although I tried hard, at the end of the day I could not protect myself or my machine from colored paints. Bharat is an Indian born photographer now living in Oxford, UK. He has lived and experienced life in four different continents with vastly different cultures. From a young age his inclination to connect everything has had an influence on his photography. Over the last 20 years photography has become his passion, at first embracing its many genres but now concentrating on social documentaries. His images give voice to the under privilege and those who live on the margins of societies around the world.
Bharat, şu anda Oxford, Birleşik Krallık’ta yaşayan Hindistan doğumlu bir fotoğrafçı. Dört farklı kıtada çok farklı kültürler yaşayıp deneyimledi. Küçük yaşlardan itibaren her şeyi birbirine bağlama eğilimi onun fotoğrafçılığını etkiledi. 20 yıl içerisinde tutkusu haline gelen fotoğrafın birçok türünü denedi son dönemlerde sosyal belgesellere yoğunlaştı. Bharat calls it “Photography for a Purpose”. Purpose to retain the importance of what is present and that which may inform the future. This can be seen in his long-term project on “Nomadic Tribes of India”, “Brick Workers”, “Women Workers” and many more. These projects have been exhibited at various venues. And published in Journals, magazines and websites. Many of his prints are also on the walls of private collectors.

“Brick Workers of India” Brick making goes hand in hand with the construction industry which in turn is dependent on the country’s progress. Over the past two decades India has seen a real economic boom. As a result, the brick making industry has grown rapidly.

India is now the second largest producer of bricks in the world with nearly 250 billion bricks produced annually from over 120,000 brick kilns. But the industry is largely unregulated making it a hot bed for exploitation of labour. It is an industry which employs an estimated 15 million unskilled workers.

The gross economic inequality within India means there is a ready source of cheap labour which rife for exploitation and used as bonded labour. Many workers are often trafficked from their villages, lured by the prospect of good job and cash advances. They become the internal migrants travelling in family units which include children. In the brick kilns there is work for the whole family.

İfsak, Fotogen, Fototrek’te karma sergilere katıldı. Fotoğrafları pek çok ulusal ve uluslararası yarışmalarda ödül ve sergilemelere layık görüldü.

Her solo exhibition “The Story of a Representation” was exhibited at ArtLoft-Fototrek in 2017 and on the 10th İnternational Art Days in Trabzon in 2018. Bekir Tuğcu ile ortak projesi “İstanbul Devlet Senfoni Orkestrası” 2012 yılında 6.Sami Güner Kupasını, “Bir Temsilin Hikayesi” projesi ile 2013 yılında İFSAK kupasını almaya hak kazandı. 2013 Yılında AFIAP ünvanını aldı. “Bir Temsilin Hikayesi” fotoğraf projesi İZ dergisinin 58 sayısında yayınlandı. “Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra”; her joint project with her partner Bekir Tuğcu; was awarded the 6th Sami Güner Cup in 2012 . She had also the IFSAK cup in 2013 with the “Story of a Representation” project. She deserved to receive the title of AFIAP in 2013. Documentary photographers like us always have only one concern: Turning the invisible to visible.
Bu temsillerin kahramanları nasıl hazırlanıyorlar? Neler yapıyorlar? Salonları yıkan alkışları duyana kadar geçen çalışma süreçleri nasıl geçiyor? How are these representations prepared? What are they doing? How are the working processes going until you watch those amazing shows? With all these curiosities and questions in my mind, I started to press the shutter . I observed and photographed every step of the preparation for a performance step by step. I watched their sweaty bodies, injuries, painful feet in their points, meticulously repeated rehearsals, make-up rows, their endless excitement before going backstage. As the curtain closed and the intense applauses started , I saw the happiness in their faces despite their tired bodies.
İşte benim projem de bu gördüklerimi belgeliyor. Onların bir temsil gerçekleştirmedeki tüm zorluklarına paralel, benim işim de o kadar zordu. Konsantrasyonlarını dağıtmadan orada yokmuşum gibi çalışmayı başarabilmek pek de kolay değildi. Ancak zamanla sevgili balerin dostlarımla birlikte birbirimize alışarak bu güçlükleri yenip yolculuğumuza devam ettik.
Here is my project documents what I have seen. Parallel to all their difficulties , my job was not easy either. I tried to work as if I wasn’t there in order not to disturb them. However, over time, we got used to work together, overcome these difficulties and continued our journey.

Serkan TEKİN. İstanbul’dan bir fotoğrafçı. Alanı daraltırsak, çoğunlukla sokak fotoğrafçısı. Yıllardır film izlemek, müzik dinlemek, kitap karikatür okumak vs. güzeldi. Hayatı sanatla tanımak ve ona sanatla tutunmak insanı yoğuruyordu. Fakat öyle bir an geldi ki, içeriden bir dürtü, bu tüketim iyi hoş ama bir şeyler üretmeli dedi. İşte 7 sene önce, enteresan bir şekilde içimdeki ses sanki bir vahiy gibi ‘Fotoğraf ’ dedi ve ben o sesi dinleyerek ilk fotoğraf makinemi aldım. Fotoğrafa başlama sürecim böyle ani bir kararla oldu. Fotoğraf makinemi aldığımdan itibaren sokaklardaydım, ama kafam karışıktı.
Serkan TEKİN. A photographer from Istanbul, mostly a street photographer. For years, watching movies, listening to music, reading books, cartoons etc. getting to know life with art and holding on to it, was nice. But there came a moment when I said, an impulse from within, that consumption should produce something. 7 years ago, interestingly, my inner voice said “Photograph” like a revelation, and I listened to that voice and bought my first camera. My starting point to photography was with such a sudden decision. I was in the streets since I got my camera, but firstly very confused.
SERKAN TEKIN’s “Istanbul: A Street Opera” Series Ne yapmalıydım, nasıl yapmalıydım emin değildim. Fotoğrafı ve fotoğraf makinemi tanıdıkça, sokaklara ve insanlara alıştıkça o kafa karışıklığı gitmeye başladı. Anlatmak istediğim her şeyin, aradığımın, sanatın sokaklarda olduğunu anladım. Beni yıllardır yoğuran şeyleri görmeye başladım sokaklarda. Mizah da sokaktaydı, acı da... Güzel ve çirkin, iyi ve kötü, canlı ve cansız, biçim ve hikaye, normal ve anormal, gerçek ve hatta gerçeküstü... hepsi sokaktaydı.
I wasn’t sure what and how should I do . As I got to know the photo and my camera, and got used to the streets and people, that confusion started to disappear. I realized that everything I want to tell and what I was looking for was on the streets. I started to see things that have ripen me for years in the streets. Humor was on the street, pain was on the street... beautiful and ugly, good and bad, alive and lifeless, form and story, normal and abnormal, real and even surreal... it was all on the streets.

Bilim kurgu ya da fantastik işler bile yapabilirdim sokaklarda. Böylece yavaş yavaş bağlandım sokak fotoğrafçılığına ve sokaklara. Benim için o kadar önemli bir alan oldu ki, orada mutlu oluyorum, orada oynuyorum, orada içimi döküyorum, orada bir şeyler deniyorum. Neticede hobi midir, amatörce midir, sanat mıdır, sokak fotoğrafçılığı mıdır bilemem. 92 X-POSURE - APRIL 2021
I could even do science fiction or fantasy on the there. So slowly I got connected to street photography and the streets. It has become such an important area for me that I become happy there, I play there, I pour my heart out there. After all, I do not know if it is a hobby, an amateurish, art, a street photography.
Emin olduğum tek şey içimdeki büyük fotoğraf tutkusudur.Bu fotoğraf tutkusunu körükleyen en önemli motivasyonlarım ise başta müzik olmak üzere diğer sanat dallarından beslenmek ve İstanbul’dur. Evet, İstanbul... Bir sokak operası! ‘İstanbul: ‘Bir Sokak Operası’ tanımı yıllar önce İstiklal Caddesinde yürürken aklıma gelen bir düşünce oldu.
The only thing I’m sure is the great passion for photography inside me. My most important motivations that support this passion are feeding from other branches of art; especially music, and Istanbul. Yes, Istanbul ... A street opera! The definition of “Istanbul: A Street Opera” was an idea that came to my mind years ago while walking on Istiklal Avenue. X-POSURE - APRIL 2021

Hatta fotoğraflarımın çoğunu bu projeye yönelik çektim, hala da çekerim. Bu düşünceyi biraz daha açmak isterim, çünkü sanırım fotoğraflarımın özü burada saklı. Hayatımda fotoğrafla birlikte en sevdiğim sanattır müzik. Bütün boş vakitlerimde sokaklardayım ve sokakta olduğum her an kulağımda kulaklık, beni o gün hangi müzik motive ediyorsa sokaklara, fotoğrafa, onu dinliyorum. Rock, metal, blues, caz, klasik müzik, rap...Bazen gün boyu Iron Maiden, bazen de Bach dinliyorum mesela.

I would like to explain this idea a little more, because I think the essence of my photos is hidden here. Music is my favorite art in my life along with photography. In all my spare time, I am on the streets and every time I am on, I put on my headphones and listen to whatever motivates me that day, to the streets, to the photography. Rock, metal, blues, jazz, classical music, rap... Sometimes I listen to Iron Maiden all day long, sometimes Bach for example.
O günün müziğini hissettiğimde, sokaklar bir şekilde buna uyum sağlıyor ve başlıyorum fotoğraf çekmeye. O anda İstanbul’un neresindeysem, bir opera ortamı oluyor benim için. Sanatta mizahı, absürdlüğü ve soyutlamayı/ soyutlanmayı seviyorum. Sokakları kullanarak da kendimi sevdiğim şekilde ifade etmeye çalışıyorum.
When I feel the music of that day, the streets somehow adapt to it and I start taking pictures. Wherever I am in Istanbul at that moment, there becomes an opera scene for me. I love humor, absurdity and abstraction in art. I try to express myself in the way I love it by using the streets. 95 X-POSURE - APRIL 2021

Of course, the streets of Istanbul give them all. Hemingway said for Paris: “It is such a city that it gives as much as you want.” I don’t know Paris, but Istanbul does that. Whatever you want, travel, watch, communicate, call, brave, crazy, full ....It will give that much.
