Water Filters, Water Jars Distributed in Siem Reap 101 water filters and 102 water jars were distributed to 203 families living in three communes - Pouk, Sasor Sdom and Reul in Siem Reap Province in January.

During the occasion, HFH Cambodia team provided an orientation to community people about the proper methods to keep, clean and use the facilities.

The distribution, which was part of the implementation of the HFH Cambodia Water, Sanitation and Livelihood Project funded by Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission through Habitat for Humanity Great Britain was conducted in order to promote use of clean water and lead to sustained behavior change of community people through the use of safe water.

“I’m so happy receiving the water filter and I now clearly understand how to use it. I never know that this small item would give such benefits to my family. It saves us time that we do not need to boil water and it helps keep us away from getting sick. When I go back, I will introduce its to other families about its usefulness and encourage them to use it also,” said Sao Bot, Siem Reap.

HIV/AIDS Care and Prevention Training in Kandal Province

A training on HIV/AIDS care and prevention was conducted from February 19 to 22 in S’ang, Kho Thom, and Punhealeu Districts, Kandal Province, in which 38 families participated. The purposes of this training were to educate people about HIV/AIDS, how HIV can be transmitted, how to prevent the transmission from mother to child, and ways of taking care of health when living with HIV/

AIDS and various prevention approaches. The Project Officer for Building Homes Building Positive Lives project said, “I believe they gained more knowledge from this training because together with the orientation, we also facilitated them to have group discussions and presentations of their thoughts and experiences. As a result, aside from learning from each other’s experiences, they also became more confident in presenting and their sharing became dynamic. Pann Sokhom, a participant beneficiary from Ponhea Leu district shared, “This training gave me the chance to talk and share experiences with other trainees and this led me to understand our situation more. I think this is a good training as we can absorb and recognize more about the problems we are facing every day and figure out and accept ways of dealing with them.”

Mekong Big Build

A Project of Hope November 3 - 9, 2013 The closure of Steung Meanchey dumpsite in 2009 left hundreds of families without homes and their source of income – as garbage pickers – in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. Many now live in shacks hugging the dumpsite’s fence, and others are dispersed across the city; all live in substandard housing struggling to make a living. Mekong Big Build volunteers will work at Smile Village, or Phum Kdey Nhor Nhem, helping to build affordable rental homes for these families. Smile Village is a 2.2-hectare site just 11 kilometers and within cycling distance from the city center, providing easy access to jobs, schools and opportunities to develop new skills.

Mekong Big Build Volunteers of the Mekong Big Build 2013 event in Cambodia will be building rental housing units at the Smile Village project, a community and housing development program to provide families from urban low-income communities in Phnom Penh with access to secure, adequate housing. Habitat for Humanity Cambodia is the housing partner of Pour un Sourire d’Enfant (PSE), a non-profit organization, and is responsible for construction at Smile Village. PSE will provide education and vocational training facilities for children and older youth.

In addition to houses, families living in Smile Village will benefit from: • No threat of eviction • Education opportunities • Being able to save • Vocational training • Healthcare provision • A safe, healthier living environment • Sustainable revenue-generating activities The project will also help families to prepare for home ownership.
