Highlights Shelter-Based Project for PLWHA Successfully Concluded Chabpdeum Chivit Thmey, CCT (New Life, New Start) project aimed to complement social services provided by HIV-focused programs to PLWHA and orphaned and vulnerable children in Cambodia with safe and decent shelter to promote sustained improvement in their living conditions and increase their life chances has reached its full completion on December 2012. In retrospect, the project has four significant objectives - to improve physical security and living conditions for PLWHA, to provide access to medical and social support, to increase beneficiary aspirations for a better future and to increase beneficiary livelihoods. Upon its completion, the project has built and repaired 150 houses (35 new houses, 53 houses and lands, and 62 house repairs) with sanitation facilities (toilets, water filters, water jars, connection to clean water, pump wells, among others). Through Habitat for Humanity Cambodia’s partner NGOs, the project has supported 244 infected and affected people of 150 families. Of which, the HIV-infected in-

dividuals receive regular free Anti-Retroviral Treatment, with zero drop-out rate through continued education about HIV/Aids including self-care, HIV/Aids prevention, prevention of mother-to-child transmission and discrimination reduction. Additionally, 145 families attended self-aspiration workshops focused on beneficiaries taking responsibility and planning for their future. Families also attended training on basic construction skills, family financial management, small business management and livelihood. They were also provided training on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, which was conducted by a professional consultant from the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR). The trainings were based on the results of a training need assessment (TNA) conducted by the project and the families’ current resources. Mr. Kheng Virak, the CCT Project Officer shared his thoughts about the project, “I have been working on HIV/Aids project for over two years and I have seen our approach evolve over time. Aligned with the program intervention’s improvements are tangible changes

among the families we are supporting and working with. They are healthier. They are more at peace. Their social lives have become normal for them and their families and their livelihood have improved, and they now have better plans for their future especially for their children. To them, their decent shelters helped them gain dignity.” “Beyond our expectation, we finally have our own house. We also have clean toilet, public water and electricity connections, and our family has gained confidence. Relatives and neighbors acknowledge us more and no longer discriminate against us. This new home brings my family many great things,” said Long Dara, 48-year old, CCT project home partner. The CCT project began in January 2012 in partnership with Sharing Experience for Adapted Development, Khmera, Sihanouk Center of Hope, and funded by Elton John Aids Foundation. It served as a continuation of the first HIV project of Habitat for Humanity Cambodia that was launched in 2010.

Oudong Families: Improved WaSH Awareness A training on Personal Hygiene and Water and Sanitation was conducted to 19 participants living in Punhea Leu district, Kandal Province on December 20. The training aimed to raise families’ awareness on the use of clean and unclean water, to educate them about water-borne diseases and prevention from the diseases, how to keep their water clean, the important of using toilets properly and proper hand washing steps. Gender transparency in families was also included in the training topics. To reach maximum results, the team brought together existing tools aligned with the training that were developed by the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR). The tools included the use of photos about hygiene, water and sanitation which were used a in group works. A short video clip illustrated different improper living behaviour as well as the right practices. Issu e 48 |

“This training is really useful to me and my family. Before, we always thought we already know everything we need to know about hygiene and we never pay attention to it. But after this training, I realized that we only knew very little about proper hygiene and how to live healthy lives. I’m very thankful that I was given a chance to be a part of this class and I promise to bring all I have learned to practice and share them to my family and other people in the community,” said Troy Bunthoeun, 44-year old, home partner from Chabpdeum Chivet Thmey (CCT) Project. “Participants were so enthusiastic to learn about hygiene, water and sanitation. I believe that these families now have clearer understanding. We expect great changes in their personal habits soon,” said Pich Sovann, HFH Cambodia Project Officer.

Viva Volunteers Global Village Wrap Up December 31 to January 04: They fulfilled their New Year resolution. The 16 Global Village members from United States worked with HFH Cambodia in Pouk District Siem Reap and completed building six toilets for families that never before experienced using a latrine. The team and the families excitedly accomplished their long list of tasks and celebrated together with enriched knowledge about the importance of proper sanitation to adequate housing. Yes, they were doubly successful in achieving their New Year resolution of supporting people in need. January 15 to 19: 33 Global Village volunteers from China reached out to Cambodian families with HFH Cambodia in Vimean Trung Community, Phnom Penh. The Cathay Pacific Airways Limited Company Hong Kong was able to complete the foundations for three brick houses. They also did some plastering work. Aside from building, the team learned well about the Cambodian culture and its charming people by creating friendships with the community people and the families and workers they worked with. They had a heart-felt dedication celebration, which the members say just makes them miss their home partners and new Cambodian friends more.

Special Feature Fulfilling A Mission

Upcoming Events and

After six months, we returned to Kor Trokeat Primary School to film for our Water and Sanitation program and talk to some of the school children and teachers and see how things have been for them since we held a Hygiene Event in their school. We were greeted by the cheerful children as they busily cleaned their schoolyard and classrooms. It was their cleanup day. Every month, the school children would devote a day for them to gather their energies to help their school in maintaining their facilities. Unlike other private schools children, the students in Kor Trokeat Primary School have to see to it that they keep their learning grounds and facilities clean. After cleaning up, some of the kids joined the younger ones in the library to read books and look through pictures. Among them was a familiar face – Tao Srey Ly - one of our young student leaders who actively helped us head a village Hygiene campaign in June last year. Srey Ly is now in High School and she has moved to study in Angkor Chum High School, 7km away from Kor Trokeat Primary School. Srey Ly’s teacher told us that she often visited the school and would spend time in the library studying and reading to the other children. She did not notice us, as she was carefully reading about the importance of clean water and proper hygiene to the other children who were also listening intently to her. We were pleasantly surprised to find Srey Ly in Kor Trokeat and we deeply appreciated her show of commitment to continue teaching the children.

It was almost noontime and the children began to leave the school. Srey Ly told us that she has to head home for lunch, change and go to her new school. “I love being in high school. I am learning many new things. Everyday is exciting for me, but I also love visiting my old school and spending time with the children. I am very happy that I still get to teach them and help them in my own little way,” she said.

12 – 21 February

Srey Ly’s words simply put our mission into perspective. We are grateful to her for allowing us to touch her life as one of our enthusiastic student leaders in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. She unselfishly shares her time and energy to other children as she pursues her dream of completing her education. It is awe-inspiring to see such unwavering dedication coming from such a young heart.
