rystal Park and I started planning this issue last July. We talked about it whenever what we were currently working on was far too stressful, calming ourselves with the fantasy we knew this shoot would be. For months we gathered inspiration from everywhere: an old Young Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair, the archives of online GQ, and even a Neiman Marcus Lookbook. We always knew it would be at the beach and that it would be at least six pages (in print, it is eight, online it is sixteen: issuu.com/HABITMagazine). When it was finally time to stop daydreaming about it and actually start planning the shoot, everyone on staff really came together. Whether it was finding models or dresses or experimenting with different men’s formal looks to locate a happy medium of class, contemporary and edgy, everyone went above and beyond to make this issue the best it could possibly be. Most of it was not easy --- trying to find six good-looking guys willing to model for a fashion magazine proved to be much harder than we had foreseen. Each issue of HABIT entails lots of learning and research, and that was especially true for this issue. Patrick Conroy (Public Relations Director/Men’s Fashion Director/model/writer/really awesome person extraordinaire) and I studied and absorbed men’s formalwear trends as we forayed into an area of fashion neither of us had much experience with until about two months ago (he had rented suits a couple of times for dances; I had given my dad a thumbs up when he went to events with my mom). I would not call us experts even now, but we definitely know the difference between a suit and a tuxedo, that cummerbunds are out and bowties are back and a few other fashionable tidbits. The shoot itself started on a chilly Saturday morning at five, and lasted seven hours (there were twelve foot waves that day. Fun fact). Afterward, Crystal, Patrick, Sarina and I sat in camp chairs in my garage, a mountain of sorting and recording on the tables before us and more than 700 photos to weed through on my laptop. I was ready to sleep for the rest of the weekend, but we persevered, working another six hours, fueled by grilled cheese sandwhiches, popcorn and the knowledge that the spread is freaking beautiful (thanks, Zack).

dear grace, Dear Grace, I like a guy, and I’m pretty sure he knows. The thing is, his best friend used to (and maybe still does) like me. About a month ago, the best friend told me how he felt, and I told him I wanted to remain friends. Do you think the guy I like won’t want to date me because of his friend? -Point A in a Love Triangle Dear Point A, That’s hard especially since they’re best friends so they likely feel they have an allegiance to each other before girlfriends. Unless your crush really likes you, he most likely won’t try anything with you for a while for the sake of his friend. If I were you I would give it some time. You can keep flirting and talking with your crush so he knows you’re into him, but at the same time avoid his friend who likes you. Hopefully over time he will move on and forget about you and won’t be offended if your crush starts liking you. You were smart to be honest with him though by telling him you just wanted to be friends. <3 Grace

Dear Grace, I’m a dude and I love shopping at Urban Outfitters....does that make me weird? -Urban, Not Metro Dear Urban, No way! That means you have a good sense of style and care about the way you look. I think more guys should dress like you. <3 Grace

me! Also, I think maybe guys are intimidated by me (I’m taller and look older than 17), so older guys tend to hit on me. How do I get noticed by guys my own age??? -Out of Their League? Dear Out of Their Leauge, Just by your letter, you seem pretty mature for your age. It’s tough to be mature and look older in high school sometimes, especially because girls mature earlier than guys and some guys are immature and can’t handle it. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with you because you’re still getting attention from guys, just not guys your age. Honestly, there isn’t too much you can do about this. The last thing you want to do is try to dumb yourself down or slouch to look shorter so guys will want to go for you. You need to have confidence; so what if you’re tall? You’re going to find a guy who loves that. Continue to be yourself and I promise you will find the the right guy ---- someone who who accepts you and appreciates you for who you are, even if you do happen to be a bit taller than him. There’s also nothing wrong with dating a guy who is older than you. A good guideline to go by is not to date anyone who is a fourth older than your age. For example, I’m almost 18 so I shouldn’t date anyone 22 and a half or older (or it would start to get creepy). Don’t give up on guys your own age, though. Keep putting yourself out there and talking and flirting with them, they will notice you . <3 Grace

Dear Grace, I’m 17 and I have never had a real boyfriend. I’m frustrated that no guy ever seems to go for

Dear Grace, For a guy, how many sweatpants days in a week are too many?

Continue to be yourself and I promise you will find the right guy!

-Lazy Butt Dear Butt, Personally, I’m not a big fan of guys wearing sweat pants, especially to school. Weekends are fine when you’re just hanging out, but if you’re going to school, then I would suggested no more than once every other week. Sorry if you’re really into sweat pants. <3 Grace Dear Grace, I have terrible acne and I want a good foundation that will cover it but not dry out my skin or cause more acne. Ideas for Formal foundation? -Make Me Pretty! Dear Pretty, Start by using a moisturizer. Try Aveeno Positively Radiant (as an added bonus, it’s SPF 30). Skip thick foundations which tend to clog your pores, leading to more acne. Also try Neutrogena’s SkinClearing Liquid Makeup, a foundation with salicylic acid, which helps fight acne as well as cover it. If you can still see your acne through the foundation, try dabbing a light bit of coverup over the obvious spots after applying your foundation, or brush a light mineral powder over your face. I recommend CoverGirl Trublend Micro Minerals, but Bare Essentials also works really well and is good for sensitive skin. <3 Grace Grace Weselak is a senior at Torrey Pines High School with the answers to all of your fashion, beauty, relationship, friend, and life problems. She has no training or education in counseling. Don’t be afraid to ask, confidentiality is guaranteed! deargrace@habitfashionmag.com http://www.formspring.me/DearrGrace

Dear Grace, I am going to formal with my boyfriend of eight months. I think he has high expectations for that night...what do I do??? -Unsure about Losing It Dear Unsure, You need to talk to him about the night instead of jumping to conclusions about what he is thinking. If you trust him, are in love with him, and want to go all the way, then make sure you are prepared. If you think about it and still feel uncomfortable about it, then tell him that you aren’t ready. If he’s a decent guy, he will respect your decision. The last thing you want is to regret losing your virginity -- it only happens once and you want it to be an experience you can remember fondly. <3, Grace

Men’s Accessories: To enhance the look of the typical tux or suit, try some subtle accessories, such as bracelets, rings, necklaces, and suspenders. For Winter Formal, experiment with rings or a pair of suspenders for a well put together look that doesn’t overload the outfit. When choosing suspenders, try to either stick with the color scheme of your suit, or choose a color that is on the opposite side of the color wheel (a complementary color). H&M and Urban Outfitters are good choices for rings and other affordable accessories. Once the jacket comes off and the dress shirt sleeves are rolled up, try some bracelets or a watch - H&M, AE, and Tilly’s are your best bet for those. The accessories are meant to be fun, but don’t put on too many. If you have never worn accessories before, try it. It won’t decrease your manliness; in fact, all of the ladies will compliment you for your boldness and how good you look. -Patrick Conroy

Strike a Pose: You’ll undoubtedly be posing for plenty of photos on Formal Night, but you may not know how to make sure each one is flattering. Practice smiling in the mirror to see which kind of smile is prettiest: closed mouth, lips parted slightly, lots of teeth, etc. When you’re in front of the camera, tilt your head slightly to the side and make sure your chin is slightly down. If you want to put your hands on your hips, place them lightly so only your fingers are on your body (putting your entire hand on your dress can create an unflattering illusion of bulges). To create a slimming effect on your legs, stand with one foot in its natural position with your toe pointing toward the camera. Cross the other foot over so it is in front of and slightly to the side of the first (this works best if you are wearing heels, which additionally elongate your legs). Finally, suck your tummy in and stand with your shoulders back and chest up and you’re ready for the paparazzi (or the formal photographer)! -Vanessa Pius

Make your makeup last: The obvious secret to makeup that stays put is to use longwearing products, but what you might not know about is the importance of layering. Layering is key to exiting Formal looking as put-together as when you arrived, even after a night of sweaty dancing. For your eyes, wear a coordinating cream eyeshadow underneath for color that lasts. Waterproof mascara is a must, but also set your liquid or gel eyeliner with a matching powder eyeshadow for zero smudging. While applying face makeup, layer products from heaviest to lightest coverage and give each layer time to set. We recommend this order: facial primer, cream concealer, foundation, liquid concealer, and powder. If you have a dry complexion, stick with a cream blush. If you have an oily skin type, use a powder formula. To keep your color intact, try a lipstick over a lip stain for a just-bitten effect and avoid excessive gloss. Matte finishes wear the longest, but can dry out lips, so apply a non-sticky balm first. -Crystal Park on Brian: suit and jacket Friar Tux on Jody: dress Terani Couture, A Nite on the Town Fashion & Bridal

Chic Shoe: Disregard the notion that your shoes have to be wallflowers to your trendy Formal dress. Try picking your shoes first! If you feel uncomfortable without a coordinating ensemble, test out the chic French way of matching lipstick to pumps. You cannot go wrong with a classic, sexy red; however a flattering nude is always in style and very flattering (elongates bare legs). Stepping into wilder territory, leopard print heels boost any dress into full glamour mode. For an edgier take, give leopard print booties a whirl. Platforms are back, and we love the playful Mary Jane versions we’ve spotted in stores and on the runways (plus, they’re far more comfortable than platform-less stilettos… a bonus besides the classy, preppy look). The platform heel alleviates the shoe’s daunting height and supports your feet better. -Crystal Park

Glam it up for Formal, DIY Style! Glitter-Ombre Nails :: 20 min

Choose two glittery nail lacquers similar in hue. We used Milani One Coat Glitter Nail Lacquer in Purple Gleam ($5) and China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Skyscraper ($6). Apply one layer of a base coat.

Pick one of the opaque glittery nail polishes to be the base of your ombre design. Paint one coat, and apply another for opacity if necessary.Â

Before your base dries, wipe off excess product from the brush of your second glittery polish. Quickly brush onto your nails with an irregular dragging motion from the bottom, stopping halfway to the tips.Â

Adjust the ombre design with more of the second polish if desired. Seal your manicure with a top coat like Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat ($10).

Faux Bob :: 40 min

Apply a curl enhancing cream and use a one-inch curling iron to curl your hair alternating curls outwards and inwards. Set with hairspray.

Tie your hair with a clear elastic a few inches from the ends. Slowly roll the hair upwards underneath itself until you reach the desired length of your bob.

22 habit//january:february 2011

Use bobby pins to tuck in and secure the hair in place. Use hairspray liberally underneath the faux bob to give the bobby pins grip.

Randomly pull out a few strands of hair around your face for a softer look and set the faux bob with a light touch of hairspray.

Smoky Eye :: 30 Min

False Lashes :: 15 min

Curl eyelashes and groom eyebrows. Apply a long-wearing eye shadow base such as the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($19). Pat on a matte eye shadow that matches your skin tone from the eyelid up to the brow bone.

Apply eye shadow first, then curl eyelashes with an eyelash curler like the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler ($19). Use tweezers to remove the false lashes from their trays. Trim the lash band so that it fits lengthwise against the lash line.

Choose three eye shadows in the same color family with varying levels of depth and and pat the medium shade onto your eyelids, stopping at the crease. Do not extend this eye shadow into the inner corner of your eyelid.

Apply a steady, thin line of lash glue directly onto the lash band. We recommend Duo Eyelash Adhesive ($8). You can also apply glue to the back of your hand and dip a toothpick in the glue to paint it onto the band. Wait one minute for the glue to become tacky.

Apply the darkest shade into your crease and the outer corner of your eyelid to define and contour. Blend with the matte base color using a fluffy brush to prevent harshness. If necessary, lightly reapply some of the medium shade.

Carefully guide the base of the false lashes closely against your upper lash line so there is no space between the lash band and your lashes. You may find tweezers useful in assisting to place the lashes.

Softly pick up the lightest shade and brush it into the inner corner of your eyelid. Pat some of the eye shadow gently onto the center of your eyelid to lighten the look.

After the lashes are in place, gently press the lash band into place. Angle your face upwards to keep your eyelids down until the glue is completely dry. This is to prevent any smudging.

Smudge the darkest shade along the lower lash line stopping about 2/3 of the way in. Use the lightest shade to smudge along the rest of the bottom lash line. Line the eyes with liquid eyeliner and brush on three coats of thickening mascara to finish the look. Repeat these steps for the other eye.

After the glue is dry, curl your natural eyelashes with your false lashes and brush on a coat of mascara to blend them together. Apply black liquid or gel eyeliner along the lash band to conceal the line.Â

Then was Sadie Hawkins? “She was some girl that asked a guy to the dance when the tradition was the other way around.” Close, but not she put together all of the ingredients to make cinnamon buns, and one thing in each period she gave to him. the diet

by Grace Weselak

The most effective diets are the ones that don’t completely restrict you from foods because then you are not as likely to crash and overeat. A few beginning tips: stay away from white bread, regular pasta, anything with sugar as the first ingredient, soda, and fruit juices like cranberry juice. Switch to wheat bread and whole wheat pasta (complex carbs like these take longer to break down and will leave you feeling fuller), avocado, walnuts and flax seed (these are good fats, and yes, there is such a thing. They will also make your hair shinier and your nails healthier), and green tea and cayenne pepper (studies show that green tea and cayenne pepper both contain capsulin in them, which boosts metabolism). Breakfast Eat something that will keep you feeling full. Try a batch of steel rolled oats (don’t take the easy way out and make the simple sugary oatmeal). Add a little brown sugar or maple syrup for taste but don’t overdo it. Add fruit and sprinkle ground flax seed over it. Another yummy idea is a breakfast burrito: fill a whole wheat tortilla with a scrambled egg and some bell peppers or red onions. Add avocado, salsa, and black beans, if you like. Lunch/Dinner Cut the amount of times you eat out in half. People who buy lunch everyday consume so many more calories and fat grams on average than people who don’t. For lunch, pack yourself fruit, a package of healthy trail mix (I buy mine from Trader Joe’s. It’s really yummy with cashews, almonds, and cranberries, but you can also make your own), and a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and cheese. If you’re feeling hungry and this isn’t enough food, then add a cheese stick or vegetables like carrots. Allow yourself to have dessert, but try to keep it under 300 calories and don’t have it every night.

the workout

Stick with a cardio routine for at least 20 minutes, four times a week to achieve maximum results. Try running, biking, swimming, hiking, kettle bell, or Zumba. Do each strength training move in a circuit three times in a row, four times a week. Plank: Put your forearms on the ground and lift your torso off the ground using your legs. Your body should be parallel to the ground and your weight should be evenly distributed between your feet and forearms. Make sure your back does not arch or sag. Hold for 50 seconds. Back, abs, shoulders, butt, and arms. Explosive lunge: Put hands on hips and stand in a lunge position with your right foot forward and your leg bent at a 90 degree angle. Then, using both legs, hop into the air and land in lunge position with your left foot forward. Continue hopping and lunging at a consistent rate for 50 seconds. Make sure that you keep fully lunging, even if your legs are getting tired. Legs and butt. Leg lifts: Kneel and put your forearms on the floor. Keep your hips square and make sure your back is parallel to the ground. Then lift your right leg until your thigh is a bit higher than parallel to the floor. Bring your right knee back into your chest. That’s one rep, do 15 and then switch to the other leg. Keep your foot parallel to the ground as well for maximum results. Butt and abs. Inner thigh toner: Stand with toes turned out with about three feet between your heels. Lower into a deep plie. Keeping your abs sucked in and chest lifted, go back onto your toes. Return to squat and that’s one rep. Do 20 of them in a row. The longer you stay on your toes, the faster you will tone your inner thighs so try holding it for about three seconds each time. Thighs and butt. Incline pushup: Find a sturdy table that’s about hip height. Put your hands on the edge and do 10 to 15 pushups, depending on your arm strength. Make sure to keep your core tight. Arms. Overall abs: Sit with your knees bent and raised about 3 inches off the floor, lean back slightly. Rotate your body to the right and touch the ground by hip, and then rotate to the left and do the same. Rotate back to the center and lean back as you straighten your legs parallel to the ground and then pull them back up to your beginning position. 15 times is one rep. Obliques and abs.
