We continue to strengthen links worldwide

From the Headmaster It gives me great pleasure to introduce this issue of the Aske Report, and to reflect on all that The HABS Foundation is currently doing to bring together the wide Haberdashers community of Old Boys, parents, staff and former staff, friends and supporters. I write at a time when the School has been named The Sunday Times Independent School of the Year. This is based not only on academic achievements, but also includes quality of co-curricular provision, parent feedback and the success of former pupils. Our Prep School has topped the tables yet again in their respective category, with the very best academic results in the country. The process in determining these achievements is rigorous and wide ranging and I therefore would like to thank all members of the Haberdashers community for your support and outstanding contributions to the life of the School. Your commitment and passion is what drives Habs to the forefront of global education. The HABS Foundation has recently held a number of large-scale and also more intimate events both at home and abroad – including reunions, gatherings, career and networking evenings and more. There have been very successful (and entirely enjoyable) reunions in New York, USA and Tel Aviv, Israel. More global events are planned for the near future; the USA

has proved a popular destination for many Old Boys and we are very much looking forward to heading stateside again this year. These events are vitally important and provide Old Boys and members of the Habs community with the opportunity to reconnect with each other and the School. We are receiving enthusiastic reviews from attendees as we look to increase these events going forward. With this in mind, within this issue you will also read about social gatherings a little closer to home: ‘Welcome back to Habs afternoons’ and ‘Haberdashers Drinks in the City’. These events are being organised in response to requests arising from last year’s Foundation survey. As we continue to strengthen links worldwide, particularly with Ivy League universities, this academic year we have working with us Edward Leung, our first Aske-Princeton Fellow. Edward has been an invaluable addition to the teaching staff, working closely with the History department, while acting as advisor to our university entrants. He is also a concert pianist of some considerable note! The digital presence of The HABS Foundation has increased enormously over the past couple of years, with record numbers joining our Old Boys’ database and many more former pupils and staff ‘liking’, ‘following’ and engaging with

us on our social media channels. Please do visit our Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as our website (www.habsboys.org.uk), to keep up to date with all things Habs. The Foundation held a very fruitful telephone campaign in the summer of 2016 and I would like to thank all of those who took part, both the boys who worked tremendously hard but also those who gave their time to speak to the boys. You may read more on this elsewhere in this issue. I would like to close by thanking you all for your kind efforts and contributions to support the great work that The HABS Foundation is doing. Whether you have made an immediate financial donation, a gift in kind, are thinking of making a bequest or legacy, have offered current pupils work placements or careers advice, or have supported us at our many events throughout the year, we are truly indebted and extremely grateful.

Founder’s Celebration of the Class of 2016 The School held a celebratory evening on Wednesday 29 June 2016 to mark the completion of study by our Upper Sixth (Year 13) boys. The boys and their families enjoyed House farewells, drinks and canapés in the Medburn Centre, followed by speeches and prize-giving in the Bourne Hall. After a formal procession into the Hall, the Second Master, Mr MLS Judd, addressed the audience; expressing warm wishes and congratulating the boys, as well as acknowledging the contributions of their supportive families and teachers.

to all. He explained what it means to be an Old Haberdasher and reminded all of the importance of philanthropy in the history of the School, while exhorting all to keep in touch. Prizes were awarded to the Upper Sixth by the Second Master and, following the ceremony, the boys continued celebrating their achievements with family, friends and teachers. It was a delightfully Haberdashers evening; a wonderful occasion! We look forward to hearing of many more achievements from the Class of 2016, who will always remain part of the Habs Community.

The guest speaker, barrister and writer Mr Jeremy Brier (OH 1998), offered wise words to the boys, using humility as his theme, drawing from his own experiences – a brilliant, humorous and motivational speech. 2016 School Captain Will Withyman offered the vote of thanks and spoke eloquently about the journey he had embarked on whilst at Habs – another thoroughly uplifting speech. Mr Roger Llewellyn (OH 1983), Director of the Foundation, provided the final farewell

Sri Lanka Cricket Tour During the October 2015 half term break, the senior cricket squad comprising 18 boys from Years 10 to 13, captained by Ian Harris and accompanied by Messrs Kerry, Charlwood and Hewitt, toured Sri Lanka with the aid of a financial contribution from The HABS Foundation. Playing in hot and humid conditions, with the threat of a tropical downpour never far away, against some of the best schoolboy cricketers in the world, presented a huge challenge to our players, but one to which the boys rose with commendable spirit and determination and no little skill.

enough to play. A hard-fought victory over Richmond was shortly followed by a heavy defeat the next day to a strong Southern Academy side at the Seenigama Oval, one of two grounds built after the 2004 tsunami with aid from MCC and Surrey CCC.

The tour began in Kandy, the island’s second city, after a long and arduous journey during which the team experienced Sri Lankan driving for the first time! A warm-up game involving all members of the squad was followed by matches against St Anthony’s College, abandoned as a draw after heavy rain, and Trinity College, who included three Sri Lankan U19 players in their team.

In addition to the cricket, the party also found time to see the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, visit elephant and turtle sanctuaries and experience a river safari. The most rewarding excursion, however, was to the SOS Children’s Village in Galle. The Habs Cricket Club has supported this charity since visiting a similar village in South Africa in 2011 and on this occasion were able to deliver much needed sports equipment, as well as a donation for future projects to this most worthwhile charity.

The Habs party moved on to the beach resort of Hikkaduwa for the second leg of the tour. Yet more rain delayed the start of the match against Richmond College at the International Stadium in Galle, one of two Test venues where the team was fortunate

The final leg of the tour took the team to the capital, Colombo, and matches against St Peter’s College and Royal College. The game against Royal College was played at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground, the oldest Test venue in Sri Lanka. Despite having got off to a good start, our strong team of opponents ultimately eased to victory.

All in all, the whole trip provided a fantastic experience for all who took part and will be long remembered.

Solai Woodland Trail

HISTORY

THE TRAIL

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School sits within Aldenham House Park, a Grade II Registered Park and Garden of Special Historical Interest. Aldenham House itself was the seat of Vicary Gibbs, a wealthy financier and avid plant collector who once amassed a larger collection of Chinese flora than the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Gibbs never married, and most of the plant collection was auctioned on his death in 1932, as were the house and gardens.

As part of the wider management plan for the outside spaces at the School, and through the generous philanthropy of one family, the School has worked with Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust to create a dedicated woodland trail highlighting and interpreting the range of habitats found at Haberdashers. The design and route of the trail has been informed by consultation with staff from both the Preparatory and Senior School, and it is an aspiration that the woodland trail may be offered to other schools and community groups in the area as an educational resource.

Today, there is still evidence of the garden collections with several alien species of shrubs in the woods and at least 58 specimen trees around the site.

The Solai Woodland Trail, which officially opened in November 2015, starts next to the willow dome outside the Preparatory School. Access is via the gap between the newlyplanted hedge and woodline by the front right-hand corner of the Preparatory School. The start of the trail is marked by a rustic arch structure in keeping with the woodland. The trail takes the form of a natural but reasonably all-weather path that meanders through the woods with a number of waypoints, each highlighting an ecological feature of the trail. There are also a number of seats sited strategically around the trail where it is possible to sit and enjoy the habitats and their associated wildlife.

Prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship Chris Combemale, a recent member of our Sixth Form, has received the prestigious MoreheadCain Scholarship and is currently studying at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At Habs, Chris founded and ran a public speaking club, served as Joblings’ House Captain and was a School Council Director. He

Financial Services Careers Evening On Tuesday 26 January 2016, the School held its first Financial Services Careers Evening at The Worshipful Company of Innholders in London for boys in Year 12 and Year 13. Over the space of two hours in the beating heart of The City, boys were provided with valuable insights into the working world of the financial sector by a number of leaders in this field - Old Boys, parents and friends of the School who had kindly agreed to help in this fashion. Having been introduced by the Headmaster, Mr Peter Hamilton, keynote speaker Mr Ali Kazmi (OH 2000), Head of Infrastructure and Structured Finance Debt Advisory at Rothschild, spoke about his own journey from Habs through to his current role, the challenges and decisions he had faced

along the way and provided tips to the boys on how they might become best equipped for a career in the often cut-throat financial sector. There then followed a ‘speed-networking’ session where our other finance experts spread across two rooms to speak to small groups of boys about their own experiences, with further discussion taking place later over refreshments. The School is very grateful to all the speakers who gave up their valuable time to talk to the boys and are especially thankful to Mr Suresh Kanwar, parent of boys at the School, for his invaluable help in helping to organise and sponsor this event. The evening was a tremendous success, and one we hope to repeat in future years.

alumni connections, having been exposed to TV production and the publishing industry by the many, kind and dedicated Morehead-Cain alumni. Excited by the upcoming challenges and opportunities, Chris strongly recommends the Morehead-Cain programme to any students interested in an American university education.

Modern Foreign Languages Outreach Programme Conference

Careers Convention 2016 On Thursday 10 November 2016, the Careers Team held its biennial Careers Convention - an important event in the School calendar. The Convention involved representatives from a huge range of sectors including advertising, banking, journalism, law, PR, architecture, engineering, medicine, scientific research and technology. Boys from Years 10, 11 and the Lower Sixth had the chance to talk informally to people at the very top of their fields (many of whom were Old Haberdashers), learning about career paths, jobs and opportunities and getting useful advice for the future. This year’s event was bigger than ever, giving students the opportunity to discover careers that they may not previously have considered. In the keynote speech Mrs Wendy Tan-White MBE gave an inspiring presentation on how technology is changing the world. Boys and parents also enjoyed two interactive panel sessions. The first of these was on the Creative Industries, giving students the

Old Boy Mr Magnus Djaba speaks to boys and parents in the Aske Hall opportunity to gain valuable advice from Frank PR’s Mr Andrew Bloch (OH 1992), Mr Magnus Djaba (OH 1992) from Saatchi & Saatchi and Mr Alan Hunter (1989) from The Times who have all thrived in this competitive field. The second panel was on Entrepreneurship, and featured successful entrepreneurs Mr Andrew Evans (OH 1994), Mr Rishi Sachdev (OH 1994), Mr Jyotin Sethi (OH 1998) and Dr Amit Patel. We are extremely grateful to the speakers and exhibitors who gave up their time to join us.

As part of the School's ongoing programme of outreach activities, the Foundation has been able to assist with the funding of a day-long Modern Foreign Languages Conference aimed at bringing able, gifted and talented pupils from local state schools to Habs in a celebration of language-learning and speaking. In the comfort of the Old Refectory of Aldenham House, these pupils and their teachers were able to join our own boys listening to and exchanging ideas with a number of guest speakers who use many languages in their day-to-day work. Invaluable advice was given, excellent questions were asked and communication skills were explored and discussed, all with a view to develop confidence in the young learners present. Throughout the day group activities and games enabled the Habs boys and their guests to freely interact and learn from each other. It is hoped that this will be the first of many such MFL events forging links with other schools from the local community and that those who attended on this occasion now have a greater understanding of the value of languages in the working world.

Solai Outdoor Learning Centre

The Solai Outdoor Learning Centre was built over the October 2016 half term, to create a versatile, covered teaching area of 23 square metres, protected by the elements. This unique learning environment was donated to the School through the Foundation and is located next to the start of the Solai Woodland Trail. Habs began by inviting School Outdoor

Learning to deliver specialised training, a few months prior to the structure being built, to all Pre-Prep and Prep staff. In these sessions, staff looked at innovative and interesting ways to teach subjects outdoors to enhance and develop our already diverse co-curricular offering. The School has a handbook of lesson plans for every subject so that learning can also take place outside regularly.

The Learning Centre is already proving popular with the boys, who are very much enjoying their outdoor lessons. They have the opportunity to take part in both timetabled lessons and co-curricular actives in the purpose-built facility. Forest School is delivered as part of the curriculum to Year 3 boys, two hours a week as six-week sessions. It is hoped that this can be expanded to the Pre-Prep curriculum soon, too. In addition to this, there are two clubs that run in the Solai Outdoor Centre: Bushcraft Club and Arbojo Club. Bushcraft Club takes place throughout the academic year and is attended by Year 4 boys. Year 6 boys take part in Arbojo Club, which focuses on tasks to promote team skills, communication and leadership. The School are looking to introduce more activities for Year 5 and Year 6 in the near future. Initial plans have also been made, working closely with the Grounds Staff, to incorporate a clay oven and build a woodstore. The Solai Outdoor Learning Centre is a very busy area where the boys love to spend time. The School is indebted by the generosity of the donation that is already providing a wonderful platform for our Prep and Pre-Prep boys to improve key skills, such as working in a team, confidence and character building, decisionmaking, leadership, communication and more.

Telephone Campaign Over a period of three weeks at the end of August 2016, the Foundation ran its first telephone campaign for over five years. During this time our enthusiastic callers, comprising recent School leavers and current Sixth Form members, were able not only to share stories of Habs, old and new with all members of the School community, but also ensure that all those contacted were receiving regular news and invitations to the many Foundation reunions and School events being organised.

is a wonderful indication of the support of the Habs community for the School and we are grateful to all who have contributed in this fashion.

The Calling Team

In addition, Old Boys and parents kindly offered work experience to our current pupils, to come in to be a guest speaker, volunteer, and assist the School in many other ways. During these conversations, those being called pledged an astounding ÂŁ155,000 to help provide bursaries and facilities that will allow the current and future generations of boys at Habs to really benefit from their time here. REUNIONS Welcome back, Old Boys!

Over the past two years a number of reunions and gatherings have taken place at the School, these being for the Classes of 2005 and 2006, and 2010 and 2011, as well as one for the leavers of 1990s.

2016/17 EVENTS The HABS Foundation has more recently held a number of tremendous events. In October, a reunion for Haberdashers Historians took place at the Institute of Historical Research, while in November the Class of 2007 met in London and the Class of 2012 returned to the School. We were also very pleased to be able to welcome back in December the Class of 2016, one term after they had finished their studies at Habs. We hosted the Modern Foreign Languages Careers Afternoon and Reunion on Tuesday 24 January 2017 and our most recent event was on Monday 6 March 2017, when we held the 2000s decade reunion. At all these events it was wonderful to see so many Old Boys, teachers and former teachers.

Israel Reunion The first Old Haberdashers in Israel (OHII) reunion took place on Thursday 24 November 2016 in the Goshen restaurant in the thriving heart of Tel Aviv. The Headmaster, Mr Peter Hamilton, and

Director of the Foundation, Mr Roger Llewellyn (OH 1983), were welcomed to this very special event by the evening’s host Mr Terry Newman (OH 1999) and over 50 Old Boys and Girls from our two Haberdashers’ Schools in Elstree.

During a highly enjoyable evening (including a rousing rendition of ‘Jerusalem’), friendships were rekindled and established and the common experience of a Habs education was duly celebrated by all.

Geography Careers Afternoon and Reunion It was an excellent occasion which celebrated the achievements of former pupils and the valued contributions of former colleagues who have helped to ensure that the Geography department still has a national reputation of excellence. As the Head of Geography, Mr James Bown stated in his welcome, “Geography, now more than ever, is the subject of our times”.

On Monday 8 February 2016, the Geography Department and the Foundation were delighted to host the first Geography Careers afternoon and Habs Geography reunion.

The first part of the afternoon focused on inspiring the next generation of Year 12 and Year 13 geographers, from both the Boys’ and Girls’ Schools, as to the plethora of different career pathways a degree in Geography might provide. The afternoon networking event began with the students being divided into small groups and

having five minutes with each OH geographer after which they ‘rotated’ and moved on to the next speaker. It was wonderful to see students really engaged and interested, asking probing questions, as well as reflecting upon their subject option choices. After an hour, former colleagues and OH geographers retired to the Old Refectory to informally catch up and share memories until the early evening. The School would like to thank those former colleagues and OH geographers who generously gave up their time to talk and inspire the pupils, as well as to current staff members who were able to be there and showed their support.

Oxford Reunion On Sunday 24 April 2016, The HABS Foundation held a reunion at the Oxford Union - bringing together Old Haberdashers (and former teaching staff) who are studying/studied, or are working and living in the Oxford area. It was

a great occasion and the School would like to thank all who attended, with a special thanks to the then President of the Union, Robert Harris (OH 2013), for his kind assistance.

Modern Foreign Languages Careers Afternoon and Reunion On Tuesday 24 January 2017, Head of the Modern Foreign Languages department Mr Richard Thompson, and The HABS Foundation, were honoured to host the MFL Careers Afternoon and Reunion. Old Boys and former teachers, who have excelled using languages in their work, were invited to speak to Year 11 and Year 12 linguists and enjoy a reunion thereafter. The first part of the afternoon focused on informing the next generation of linguists of the many careers possible having studied Aske Report

0465-Aske Report 2017-v13.indd 9

languages to a high level. A round-robin format allowed the boys, split up into groups, to work around tables and meet all of the Old Boys and teachers present on the day. After the round-robin session, former colleagues and OH linguists retired to the Old Refectory to catch up informally until the early evening. The School would like to thank those former colleagues and Old Haberdashers who generously gave up their time to talk and inspire the students, as well as to current staff members who attended. 9
