Welcome to the Senior School Dear Parents, Guardians and new Year 9 students, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you and your family to Haberdashers’ Boys’ School. It is an enormous privilege to be a part of this wonderful school community and we are looking forward to you becoming a part of it. Students in the Middle School are ambitious and determined to achieve their potential. They are courageous, pushing themselves out of their comfort zone and thrive within a strong community where they develop teamwork and leadership skills, making life-long friendships along the way. Their curiosity is inspired at Habs, where they are encouraged to delve into whatever thrills them with sporting, dramatic, musical, cultural or academic interests. Together with my colleagues, we will work to help you settle into life in the Middle School at Habs. It is an energetic place to learn and grow and I am very excited to play a part in your journey with us. Curriculum Information In Year 9, you will study a full range of subjects including English, Mathematics, Geography, History, Theology and Philosophy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Art, Design and Technology, Music, PE and Games. The School Day School grounds open at 8am each day and close at 5.15pm. If your child remains after 4pm they must attend a supervised activity. Please encourage your child to be ‘car aware’ including knowing to not use listening devices when walking on the pavement. During the winter months, we recommend putting reflective strips on their bags and coats.

After School The school day ends at 4pm. Coaches depart from 4.15pm. After school activities end at 5.15pm in good time for the 5.30pm coaches. It is important that your child is aware that 5.30pm coach routes often differ from the 4.15pm route and might not include their usual stop. If you are collecting your child then please pick them up from the Pitch 5 car park, which is situated before the astroturfs. Please do not drive through the Boys’ School to collect them. School diaries School diaries will be provided to each Year 9 student in September as a space to record and reflect on academic progress and contribution to co-curricular and academic societies. Parents and Guardians will be asked to review and sign progress grade targets and reflections at various points throughout the year. Further details on these will follow.

Homework expectations Details of homework arrangements will be confirmed at the start of term. Year 9 students will not have holiday homework.

Co-Curricular Information Calendar of Events/Sports Fixtures For our calendar of events and sports fixtures, we use ‘SOCS’ an online calendar that can be accessed directly from the school website. We usually set Saturday fixtures one term in advance.

Clubs We are extremely proud to offer a full and varied cocurricular programme. We encourage you to explore a range of opportunities and try out new activities or even set up your own. These activities provide a fulfilling educational experience beyond the classroom.

Music lessons

At Habs we have over 50 ensembles rehearsing a week, encompassing students of all ages and levels of experience. We have a packed concert schedule, with over 20 major evening concerts a year, and a lunchtime concert every week of term. Recent highlights have included an orchestral project working with one of the most exciting young conductors in the country, an evening celebrating the original writing of our talented young composers, a piano festival in which over 150 performers took part in pop-up performance venues across the school campus, and a big band recording session at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios. Taking part in activities like these will form memories that stay with you for life. Whether you are a young musician already playing at a high level, or someone who wants to give it a try for the first time, we look forward to working with you and discovering the incredible potential of music together.

Sport

At Habs, sport plays an integral part of school life. Engaging in sport and physical activities is key to cultivating team spirit, positive relationships and pride in both individual and team achievements. Our ambition is to provide all students with opportunities to play within our three-tiered structure of Priority, Performance and Participation levels of sporting activity, internal franchise competitions, Inter House events, social and recreational activities aimed at developing an understanding of how exercise can positively affect health and wellbeing, and of course, numerous competitive fixtures with other schools. We field four or five teams in our priority sports, which when combined with the chance to play in other competitive sports fixtures elsewhere means that students of all standards will get regular chances to represent the school and/or their house throughout the year. Participation rates are exceptionally high with Habs students embracing the opportunity to get involved with such a broad and diverse sporting programme.

Sport Pre-season sport: The pre-season rugby and football sessions will take place on Saturday 3 September and Tuesday 6 September. The pre-season sessions will include year group sessions for both rugby and football. Boots, trainers, shinpads (football) and mouthguards (rugby) are required for each session alongside some light snacks and plenty of water.

HabsDash HabsDash is our weekly community 3.5km run. It takes place every Tuesday lunchtime around the school grounds and is open to all members of the school community. We produce a results sheet each week so you can track your progress and work towards running a half-marathon, a marathon or even further! Your kilometres also count towards the House competition. To take part, you will need to go to the Medburn Sports Centre at the beginning of lunchtime on Tuesdays and get changed. The run starts at 12.50pm - see you there!

For New Students 13+ Induction W E D N E S D AY 7 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 2 8.40AM TO 2.30PM

Induction Day takes place one day before term officially starts for all students on Wednesday 7 September. On Induction Day, you will be given your timetable, have your photograph taken, get to know your way around the school and learn how to use your lockers. Staff will be in the coach and car park to welcome you and guide you to the Bourne Hall. Please arrive between 8.30am and 8.40am. Induction Day will end at around 2.30pm and you will be shown back to the coach or car park. We ask that you: •

Attend in school uniform. Hair-styles need to be moderate, a natural colour, lie off the collar and be evenly cut. Very short or long on top cuts are inappropriate. No hairbands are permitted

•

Bring a suitable, dark coloured school bag and bring a fully stocked pencil case with your name marked clearly on the front

•

Bring a packed lunch if you are not using the school canteen

•

You will not need any kit on this day. You can bring a mobile phone but it needs to be switched off when you arrive at school.

Induction Day Coach Service For All Any pupil can use the coaches on Induction Day, whether or not they are registered as a regular user for the service. There is no charge, but you will need to book a ticket to reserve a seat. Information on how to reserve a seat on this service will be sent to you by the Transport Manager during the summer break. A bespoke timetable will be in operation for Induction Day covering the popular stops on our usual home-to-school service. The timetable for this service will be published in the transport newsletter which will be sent to all parents. The return service will depart from school at approximately 2.30pm and follow the bespoke published timetable. We do encourage everyone to use the Induction Day coach service to give students the experience of arriving and departing school from the coach park and the opportunity to meet some of our expert home to school coach drivers. From Wednesday 7 September they will become part of a 1,700 pupil strong coach community and the orientation provided on Induction Day together with the information in the coach Code of Conduct with ensure your child is equipped for their journey on the coach service.

Students Travelling to School by Car If you are being driven to school on Induction Day, please enter via the main gate on Butterfly Lane. You will be directed round the one-way system where you will be dropped off. A prefect will meet you and show you to the Bourne Hall. Please arrive by 8.40am. At the end of the day, parents should enter the main gate on Butterfly Lane. They will be directed to park in the Pitch 5 car park to collect you.

The Houses are named after the original Heads of House. You will stay in your House throughout your time at Habs. All students wear a tie incorporating their House colour. Throughout the year, we have Inter House competitions in sport, Drama, debating, chess, general knowledge and many more. You will be given details of all our opportunities by your Head of House when you join in September.

Assemblies We have various assemblies during the week lasting approximately 20 minutes. On Fridays, you can choose from the following religious assemblies: Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Humanist, Jain, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh. We encourage you to attend a variety of assemblies. The Headmaster’s assembly is available for those not wishing to attend faith assemblies.

School Council Two students from each year group are elected for the Student Council which is overseen by the Senior School staff. Seven Sixth Form Directors manage the day to day operations. The Student Council plays a critical role in life at Habs and provides development opportunities for students. Our Student Council has achieved Silver Eco-School status, led a highly successful Christmas foodbank appeal and has been awarded the UNICEF UK OutRight Certificate.

Buddies All new joiners have been allocated a buddy. There will be opportunities to meet with buddies at the start of term and they will be a key role in helping to ensure a smooth transition and settling in period.

Wellbeing and PSHCEE Years 7 to 11 students receive a weekly PSHCEE lesson with their Form Tutors during morning tutor time. This consists of combining Jigsaw Secondary modules and resources for themed weeks or special topics. In addition, workshops with specialist speakers are organised for all year groups at different times throughout the year. These focus on specific age-appropriate issues such as forming friendships, anxiety, e-safety, substances, physical and mental health and relationships. Workshops are also delivered to parents.

Lockers At the beginning of the academic year, you will be allocated a locker, some of which will have a tethered combination padlock attached to them. You can choose your own four digit code for the padlock. Others, such as those in our new buildings (Taylor and Hinton) will have a code pre-assigned. We recommend writing this code down somewhere safe and remember to not give this code to anybody else. We recommend using your locker to store your possessions in at the start of the day. Students can carry the few items needed for each lesson and return to your locker at break and lunchtime to repack your bag for the next lessons. This prevents you from having to carry a heavy bag around school. On sports afternoons, sports kit can be stored in the Medburn lockers. You will need to sign a key out and back in again with staff on Medburn Reception, or in the McGowan Changing Rooms where lockers require a self-selected key code to be used. Catering for Students Our catering services are provided by Holroyd Howe, a specialist caterer to schools in the Independent sector. Holroyd Howe prides itself on sourcing the finest British ingredients, as locally as possible and approaches food with a no-fuss attitude. The menu is updated weekly on our website. Every day there is a wide variety of ingredients, cuisines and culinary styles to encourage students to try new

The Bates Dining Room operates a cashless catering system. If you have lunchtime commitments, then you can still get lunch from the self-service area in the Bates dining room which has a range of sandwiches, paninis, fruit pots, salads and soft drinks. We also have Joe’s, which serves a range of drinks and light snacks.

Parents’ Evening

Parents’ Consultation Evenings are held in the Spring Term. You will have the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and discuss their progress. There is an evening in the Autumn Term to meet with the pastoral team to discuss general issues. We send home reports at the end of the Summer Term. If you have any concerns during the school year, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Form Tutor.

Support can occur at various levels in school life, e.g. through the Form Tutor, Head of House, Deputy Head of House, subject teachers, study support sessions and learning skills programmes. It is important to make us aware if your child has any identified specific learning needs (e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, hypermobility, visual impairments and hearing impairments) so we can provide the best support for them.

Homework

If you have concerns about the time your child spends on homework (either too little or too much), please get in touch with their Form Tutor. We do not want them to spend all evening working, as it is important they should have time to relax.

Attendance When your child is ill or will be absent from school, please follow this procedure: •

Email their Form Tutor and Absences (absences@habsboys. org.uk) on the day your child is ill. You can do this via the Parent Portal or you can call the Senior School switchboard (020 8266 1700). If your child arrives late or leaves early, they must sign in or out of Aldenham House reception. If you wish to request absence for religious observance please write to us, giving at least seven days’ notice. If possible, doctor and dental appointments should be made during the holidays. If this is not possible, please write to your child’s Form Tutor, asking permission for them to be absent. This is known as an ‘exeat’ If the planned absence is for more than half a day, please write to Mr Lawrence at lawrence_a@habsboys.org.uk. If the planned absence is for more than one day, please write to the Headmaster at HM@habsboys.org.uk. We request that absences are kept to a minimum.

Sports Fixture Attendance If you are unable to attend a fixture then please let the Sports Centre Administrator (sportsadmin@habsboys.org.uk) know with at least seven days’ notice. If your child is ill on the day of the game parents should email the Director of Sport or the team coach directly. You are warmly invited to watch as many fixtures as possible.

Coaches The School Transport Manager (Ms Emma Summers) will be pleased to answer any parental questions regarding travelling to and from Habs. She can be contacted by email on transportmanager@habsboys. org.uk or on 020 8266 1705. Parents are responsible for their children until they board the school coach. When travelling by coach, all students must have with them a working and in credit mobile phone. All tickets for the coach service should be requested via the Parent Portal. Single journey coach tickets can also be purchased from the School Office, subject to availability, for the day in question. Should your child lose an item on the coach and it is found by the coach company, it will be placed in the lost property racks in the Coach Park. If it is of high value, such as a musical instrument or a mobile phone, it will be taken to the Coach Park Office and can be retrieved by asking a member of staff on duty in the Coach Park. There is a Code of Conduct for the Coach Service which all parents, guardians and students must abide by when using the service. Mobile Phone Usage Your child will need a mobile phone if they are travelling on the coach. During the day, their mobile phone must be switched off and kept in their bag or locker. If they need to call home, then they should go to Mr Lawrence’s office to make the call. We aim to teach your child how to use their phone safely and we encourage parents to be very firm about their usage at home. The bill payer is responsible for anything on the phone that may be construed as inappropriate. As a school, we do not endorse WhatsApp as in April 2018 WhatsApp raised their minimum age to 16.

General Health Information

Please keep us updated, via the Parent Portal, of any changes to your child’s wellbeing such as hospital admissions, illnesses or new medication. We are always happy to talk about any existing medical conditions that your child might have and how this could influence our care of them in school, e.g. food allergies/diabetes/asthma/any severe reactions your child has had which requires use of an AAI (Adrenaline Auto Injector). Any relevant information will be shared with the appropriate staff members if it is essential to your child’s wellbeing. If your child develops any contagious disease such as chicken pox, measles, etc. then please inform the Medical Centre as soon as possible. If your child is unwell, e.g. has a raised temperature, has episodes of diarrhoea or vomiting, please ensure that you wait 48 hours after the symptoms have stopped before they return to school. We also ask that you inform us of any significant events such as divorce or bereavement which may affect your child emotionally.

Request for School to Dispense Prescription Medicines Collection of unwell children from School

If your child requires any prescription medicine to be taken at school then please complete the form on the Parent Portal (Request for School to Dispense Prescription Medicines). Either you or your child will need to bring the completed form to the Medical Centre along with the medication to be dispensed. It is your child’s responsibility to attend the Medical Centre to be given their medication.

It is important that a parent/carer is always available to collect an unwell/injured child from the Medical Centre. Please let the Medical Centre know as soon as possible if you will be unavailable for collection and provide an alternative contact number for a suitable carer who can act on your behalf in case of an emergency.

Uniform The Boys’ School uniform is provided by Uniform4Kids, a local family run business. They have five stores located in the nearby vicinity and an online store (www.uniform4kids.com). Their warehouse in Centennial Park, Elstree, is five minutes from the school, and is used as a ‘Click and Collect’ location. Our school coaches currently stop outside two of the stores. There is a weekly, complimentary drop off service to the school for pre-paid orders. Other orders are dispatched within 24 hours using Parcel Force or can be collected from store. Returns and Exchanges can be carried out in store, facilitated via the complimentary weekly delivery to school service or via the post. Students should be smartly dressed on all occasions and take pride in their appearance.

Mouthguard Information Parents can visit https://www.opro.com/Catalogue/Build-Your-OPRO/Mouthguard-Builder to order a mouthguard for their child. You can choose any design, including a Habs branded one which matches the colours of our sports kit. You can order this by visiting the same link as above, selecting ‘School/Club’ in the first drop-down menu and then scrolling down to ‘Habs Boys’. For students playing rugby then a mid-impact mouthguard will be sufficient. If your child will be playing hockey or any sport involving a hard ball, we recommend ordering a high or pro impact mouthguard.

For Sports, the white PE kit, Blue games kit, mouthguard, Tracksuit, and Baselayer should suffice

Unless students are selecting cricket for their games option or taking part in indoor co-currricular activities they are not required to purchase a cricket kit

•

Trainers for sport can be any colour with non-marking soles

•

Students must have a fully stocked pencil case.
