Wellbeing and PSHCEE
PSHCEE
(Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economic Education) PSHCEE is defined as “a planned, developmental programme of learning designed to help learners develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. It deals with real life issues which affect children and young people, their families and their communities, and engages with the social and economic realities of their lives, experiences and attitudes” (www.pshe-association.org.uk). At Haberdashers’, PSHCEE is delivered to all forms, across the three sections of the Senior School, by form tutors and timetabled staff. We actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths or beliefs. Awareness of the protected characteristics in The Equality Act 2010 is taught as part of our support of diversity across the School community. PSHCEE is a massive and influential subject, supported by the School Counsellors, Senior Management, the pastoral teams, assemblies and Key Skills. All boys receive a weekly PSHCEE lesson with their form tutors during morning tutor time, and PSHCEE Key Skills is a timetabled subject for Year 7 through to Year 10. In addition to this, workshops with specialist speakers are organised for all year groups at different times throughout the year. These focus on specific age-appropriate issues such as anxiety, e-safety, drugs and alcohol, mental health, and sexual relationships. Resources are delivered in support of the pupils and the School position. Mental health assembly delivered by pupils
The PSHCEE programme works closely with the Pastoral Board, various academic departments, the Careers Department, and Learning Support Coordinators to ensure the boys are getting a uniquely tailored programme. Many of the aims of the programme are also met through the participation of the boys in a range of co-curricular activities from the Combined Cadet Force, the School and Community Service to the Duke of Edinburgh Programme.
As well as being informative, the PSHCEE course has been designed to be skills-focused. Key skills of critical thinking, decision making and communication are developed throughout the courses. When pupils leave Habs we expect that they will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and attributes to become morally responsible and valued citizens. Our provision for the emotional and physical wellbeing of the pupils in our care has redoubled as we seek to guide, signpost advice and reassure in all aspects. If a pupil feels that they belong, that they are accepted for who they are and that they are supported through these years of development then they will flourish.
