I
t was the first professional race, it was held in Canada twelve years ago, paving the way and inspiring other canadian organizers to do the same in their towns and cities. As a result, there were between 13 and 15 races a season in British Columbia and Alberta (not including Ontario and Fast Freddies Quebec). The race is big fun. You would think twice before ripping into the famous, roughass corner with 4 or 6 riders, while hearing the striker yelling at you to get up while cracking jokes! This is canadian roots racing! This years was number 12. Besides, this was one of the first races in the world to give out over $10,000 to racers who raised the bar and forced greedy organizers to pay out. This was the first race to pay women and juniors huge cash. The way was paved and now we’re all sitting back and enjoying.

he Attack of Danger Bay’’ fue la primera carrera profesional de Canadá. La primera fue hace doce años y empezó a preparar el terreno para inspirar luego a otros para organizar más carreras en Canadá. ituated on the top of Middleton Mountain right in the middle of a suburban neighbourhood, the Vernon DH is a unique race. There are around 125 houses that are directly affected by the race that takes place every 2nd weekend of June. Residents enjoy the races and crashes directly from their own homes, patios, lawns and even roof tops. Most families plan for the weekend with friends and family visiting just for the event. The Vernon DH turned 8 years old in 2012. The track is 1km long and has a top speed of 75 km/h. A steep initial drop forces racers into a left hand 90˚ turn that is more challenging than it looks. Then, there is a short distance for racers to prepare themselves for a right hand 90˚ turn onto a main road and down a long straight to the finish where anything can happen. Racers have come from all over the world to attend this race. The Vernon DH was born to inspire racers and build a community, and that’s exactly what it has done: spawning racers in the likes of Max Erwin, Zen Shikaze, Brendan Davidson, Quin Finocchio, James Ware and Matt Rae.

Without the organizer Andrew Monaghan, the main sponsor of Landyachtz Longboards, and the help of the many volunteers that took a week off work to build all the “features” and set up nets and safety equipment we would´ve never been able to have this amazing event. Thanks to all who helped and kept this event going!

think just before the 90´s, my parents hooked up somewhere in the sunny parts of Italy. My mother is from Finland and my father from Iraq, they got me based themselves in Sweden in 1991. Their story has never really been clear to me, but with curiosity and interest I’m finding out the limits where genetics and the being “I am” together with all my past life influences and other influences meet. It´s a creation in itself when we learn who we are and how receptive we are to change, which is life. This is art: Our expression of what we perceive in life. Channeling energy, sometimes by feeling thoughtless and sometimes out of boredom is often the way I let myself drift away. It doesn’t take much to enter the state of nothingness and just let whatever it

Kath is 45 and she´s from Portland, Oregon. She used to skateboard when she was young and she´s still a snowboard fan. She was into photojournalism until one day, a Maryhill flyer caught her attention and she decided to grab her camera and check out what was it about. Once at Maryhill she got to capture for the first time incredible plaques of the most extreme and adventurous women in the world. Kath tiene 45 años y es de Portland, Oregon. Ella solía andar en skate cuando era joven y sigue siendo aficionada al snowboard. Se dedicaba al periodismo fotográfico hasta que un día, un flyer de un evento en Maryhill llamó su atención y decidió ir con su cámara a ver de qué se trataba y tomar fotos. Manuela is the photographer of HDH Magazine. She began taking pictures many years ago but when she was about to finish her studies, she came across the downhill world and that is when HDH Magazine was born. The first issue was her thesis proyect after taking pictures during the 2011 IGSA Southamerican Tour. Today she still travels to take longboarding pictures and push the envelope to be a better photographer. Manuela es la fotógrafa de HDH Magazine. Comenzó a tomar fotos hace muchos años, pero cuando estaba finalizando sus estudios, se cruzó con el mundo del downhill y así fue como nació HDH Magazine. El primer número fue su proyecto de tesis tras tomar fotos durante todo el tour sudamericano IGSA 2011. Hoy sigue viajando para tomar fotos de longboard y superarse a ella misma como fotógrafa.
“La Colo” named after her red hair, is from Mendoza, Argentina and began taking pictures at the “Copa de Los Andes” event in Tarma, Peru. Dazzled by the track´s power and international rider´s abilities she began looking through the lens and found out that taking pictures was part of her nature. She started with a semi-flex General Electric camera joining her boyfriend and in March 2012 she got to a whole new level after getting a Canon with which she changed her way of capturing downhill.

‘’La Colo’’ de Mendoza, Argentina inició sus pasos como fotógrafa tomando fotos en el evento “Copa de los Andes” en Tarma, Perú. Fascinada por la fuerza de la pista y la destreza de los riders internacionales, comenzó a mirar a través del lente y descubrió que tomar fotos era parte de su naturaleza. Inicio con una cámara semiflex General Electric acompañando a su novio y en marzo de 2012 pasó de nivel al apropiarse de una Canon con la que transformó su forma de captar el downhill.

Gabriela Donetti is from Colombia and she studies Visual Arts. In Bogotá she came across longboarding and her friend Camilo Céspedes together with the big family of riders from Colombia passed the adrenaline of the sport on to her. Today she wants to raise her own bar by taking pictures of riders in action. We are sure to be witnessing her evolution this year. Gabriella Donetti es colombiana y estudia Artes Visuales en Bogotá. Gabriela conoció el longboard y gracias a su amigo Camilo Céspedes y la gran familia de riders de Colombia se contagió de la adrenalina del deporte. Hoy quiere perfeccionarse fotografiando riders en acción. Seguramente seremos testigos de su evolución este año 2013.
