DEAR GOVERNOR Welcome to the Hackney Learning Trust 2016/17 training programme which focuses on strengthening governance. As the government’s plans to strengthen system-wide education takes shape alongside the implications of fairer funding, never has there been a greater need for strong, autonomous and effective governance across our richly mixed economy of schools – maintained, voluntary aided, and academy and independent registered status, some of which stand alone and others in varying forms of partnership and federation. Governance is becoming more complex, requiring greater accountability of educational standards and management of key risks. In anticipating the current and future need for all types of educational organisations, this training programme offers a wide range of opportunities to learn from experts, to share common challenges and debate possible solutions with respected peers. Our offer includes core training and bespoke sessions to match the needs of individual schools. The sessions are delivered by experts who are educational leaders, our prices are very competitive and most important of all, and we know from feedback that our governors have high regard for the quality and impact of the training we offer. We know that governors play a vital important role as ‘executive volunteers, we acknowledge the role is complex and, we thank you for giving significantly of your time and sharing your skills. We equally recognise that our schools need strong governance to embrace our collective mission to sustain excellent educational and wellbeing outcomes for all pupils. We hope therefore that our training programme will equip all governors to be able to support and challenge school leaders in ensuring that in Hackney, no child is left behind their peers. Best wishes, Sian Davies Interim Director of Education Hackney Learning Trust

MAKING THE MOST OF OUR SERVICES Advice, Guidance and training for Governors We offer swift, reliable and respected expert guidance, support and advice, provide relevant and for the moment training and bespoke solutions to support governing boards, advisory boards and their clerks. We aim to meet the requests of all types of educational organisations regardless of their funding status and needs. In doing so we will enable governors to directly contribute to changing the life chances of every child in our community and beyond, particularly those from the most disadvantaged starting points and those whose progress is stalled by challenging barriers whatever they might be.
Recruitment and Induction of Governors We offer support to schools wishing to recruit potential governors, (including parent, staff, LA positions) to ensure new members are informed and prepared to conduct strong governance from the start. (LA governor recruitment and induction is free of charge to all schools) The recruitment and induction process provides an insight into the responsibility and privilege of being a school governor and secures new members’ understanding of how strong governance can ensure every child receives the best possible education. If you are seeking to recruit new governors with a particular skillset, please let us know at governorservices@learningtrust. co.uk.
We have found the quality of training for Governors to be excellent. It has been thought provoking but above all practical and has helped the development of our Governing Body immensely. Rob Miller, Chair of Governors
