Introduction There are an ever increasing number of organisations offering alternative provision. The challenge for a secondary school or academy, who may be placing just a small number of young people each year within alternative provision, is to have a good understanding of the sector. This Directory and the quality assurance process outlined, aims to provide schools with the information they need. Each school retains responsibility for the well-being and outcomes of any student on roll who the school chooses to place in alternative provision. Schools may feel they do not have the resources or expertise to carry out this function effectively. An option for any school in Hackney is to commission New Regent’s College to assess a young person’s needs and then source alternative provision on their behalf. This means that, for KS4 students, New Regent’s College receives a daily attendance report and visits the young person regularly instead of the school having to do this. New Regent’s College is Hackney’s vocational college and Pupil Referral Unit for primary and secondary aged pupils. Key stage 4 pupils are educated off-site in a range of specialist providers commissioned, quality assured and monitored by New Regent’s College. Our mission statement: ‘Learning to Succeed’ is designed to encapsulate the work we do. Our aim is to equip learners with the skills to be successful. We aim to help students overcome their barriers to learning, which may be about improving their behaviour or some other aspect of their learning.

The college was graded ‘good’ in its recent Ofsted inspection in which the high standard of quality assurance of alternative provision was highlighted, ‘Regular visits are used to ensure that the performance and quality of each provider they use to teach pupils in Years 10 and 11 is closely scrutinised. The system to check carefully the quality of those providers who teach pupils off-site has been securely embedded.’
Offer for schools – New Regent’s College Following a detailed interview and assessment process to identify students’ needs and aspirations, we refer students to a range of programmes including: • 5+ GCSE programme: GCSEs including English, maths and science alongside other GCSE options. • Vocational programmes: options include construction, mechanics, hair and beauty, food, childcare and art and design. All include English and maths GCSE or Functional Skills and PSHE. • English for Speakers of Other Languages: students study an intensive English course while gaining qualifications in a range of other subjects. We use a range of specialised providers many of which can be found in the brochure. We quality assure our providers’ 14–16 provision using the QMET system. Post 16 provision and KS3 or primary alternative provision are not currently quality assured using QMET. New Regents College do not place pupils in external providers below KS4. Primary and lower secondary pupils are placed onsite at the college. Providers’ quality assured by the QMET process are all marked with the Regent’s College logo.

At the back of the Directory are grids giving course information showing subject and levels available. For more detailed information please contact the provider directly. This Directory is intended as a guide only. We strongly advise anyone intending to commission places or attend a programme offered by any of the featured providers, to make their own checks and visits to ensure they are happy with the quality or relevance of the programmes provided. All providers in this Directory have been assessed on the quality of their provision. The type of quality assessment they receive will depend on the type of institution they are and the provision they offer. Quality ratings/marks are shown at the bottom of each provider section
QMET All providers that have been commissioned by Hackney’s Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), who source education for young people aged 14–16 not currently able to attend mainstream schools, will receive a QMET grade 1=outstanding, 2=good, 3=requires improvement, 4=inadequate. QMET is based on quality assurance provided by the Quality Monitoring Evaluation Team which is made up of borough 14–19 representatives who carry out quality assurance on behalf of the North London Children’s Efficiency Programme and use The 6
London Quality Assurance Framework for Alternative Provision.
DfE Registered Independent providers that offer courses to six or more students or one with an Education, Health and Care Plan are now required to register as an independent school with the Department of Education. Post 16 Programmes offered for 16–19 year olds fall into three categories.
16–19 Study Programme These include a substantial vocational qualification at Level 1, 2 or 3 plus maths and English, for those who do not have a GCSE at grade C or above, personal and social development and work experience. They often offer progression into a traineeship or apprenticeship.
Traineeships These last between 6 weeks and 6 months and are designed to prepare young people for an apprenticeship, further vocational study or a job. They are tailored to meet specific needs so may include a qualification or provide a substantial block of work experience. They will also include maths and English for those who do not have a GCSE at grade C or above.
Apprenticeships Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete depending on the sector. They are available in a variety of levels to suit the young person’s needs.
All apprentices are paid employees who receive additional training usually at a college or a training provider. Training will include a vocational qualification and Functional Skills in maths and English (for those who don’t have GCSE’s grade C or above). From October 2015 the minimum salary is £3.30 an hour but is often more. Apprentices can either progress to an apprenticeship at the next level, stay as an employee with their host employer or go on to further study. Apprenticeships are available in an increasing range of sectors including business administration, construction, digital marketing, IT, fashion and even brewing. Most apprenticeship vacancies are advertised on www.apprenticeships.org.uk but it is also worth checking employer websites too. BARNARDO’S Our Hub Construction Skills Centre provides education and training for students aged 14–19. Students can attend between one and four days and take part in construction study with additional curriculum tailored to suit individual needs. Barnardo’s deliver Functional Skills, maths, English and ICT. Students can also study for a Personal Money Management qualification which supports budgeting and the key financial skills needed for independent progression and employment. We also offer a three day Music Technology Award which will include maths and English qualifications. Our centre in Stepney Green is being redeveloped for 2016–17 academic year and will offer youth work, multi-media projects and mentoring initiatives. The centre has a student common room with kitchen facilities. We provide support for students with additional needs and have dedicated pastoral support staff who promote personal, social and developmental growth. Barnardo’s holds high aspirations for all its students. Where there are issues with attendance and engagement, staff work work closely with schools and/or parents/carers to find workable solutions. We have high achievement rates with an age category winner for the UK Youth Build Award 2015.

BOXING ACADEMY Established in 2007 the Boxing Academy is an alternative education provider that offers high quality education to some of the most hard-to-reach young people. We have a reputation for a rigorous approach to educating challenging young people and a track record with successful outcomes. We use our proven, successful and unique model which is built around: • small class sizes • a personalised learning pathway • intensive mentoring by our team of boxing coaches, who also act as class tutors.
Why Boxing? Boxing benefits our students by getting them fit, teaching them teamwork, anger management, discipline and improving their confidence and concentration. The boxing coaches support the students throughout and get involved in all aspects of the students’ lives. As a result they develop strong relationships that provide a foundation from which the student can rebuild their self-esteem and start a positive cycle of achievement. Our ethos reflects our origins, that of a boxing gym. A small, comfortable and familial environment with clear boundaries, a system of rewards and sanctions and an emphasis on discipline, achievement and hard work. The relationships we build allow for genuine breakthroughs in behaviour, conflict resolution and anger management as well as academic improvement and aspirations. We also provide workplace experiences in the City, life skills, employability workshops and personal goal-setting to support our students in every aspect of their lives. BSix BROOK HOUSE Sixth Form College BSix is proud to be a comprehensive sixth form college offering courses in a wide range of subjects at all levels. We believe that all young people can achieve high standards. CENTRAL TRAINING GROUP The Central Training Group was established in 1983 and today are the largest provider of hairdressing and barbering for City and Guilds nationally. Central Training Group are leaders in working with young people and helping them to start and progress in their chosen career.

City Gateway City Gateway’s Alternative Provision (CGAP) exists to bring hope to young people aged 14–19, by working to develop the skills, confidence and belief that will enable them to add long-term value to their lives, their families and the wider community. At every stage, emphasis is placed on developing their personal, social and academic skillset. KS4 Alternative Provision (Full Time) Students are referred by schools or local authorities, often when they have not thrived in mainstream education and require a fresh start, and follow both core and vocational pathways and receive intensive pastoral support. Core curriculum: English and maths (GCSE and Functional Skills), PSD/citizenship, business enterprise and enrichment. A vocational pathway is chosen from: beauty, creative industries (media or music), construction and sport.
Post-16 Pre-Employment Training We offer the following vocational pathways: business administration and IT, customer service, childcare and health & fitness. GCSE retakes and Functional Skills are both available depending on the students agreed pathway, and starting points are determined by both previous qualifications and experience, as well as assessment and interview.
Traineeships Students progressing to our traineeship programmes will undertake a high quality work placement with one of our employer partners, whilst also developing their employability and soft skills.

Hackney City farm The school at Hackney City Farm is a unique place to learn, we have lots of open space, yet are only two miles from the City of London. Our aim is to engage, nurture, care for and prepare our students for a happy and fulfilling future. We will work with students, in realising their potential. Our team of teachers and mentors are all professionals who have a wide range of experience in life and education. We are dedicated to the joys of learning and enthusiastic about the future of our students. We support each student’s academic, physical and emotional development through a variety of courses and activities. Students have an academic core of maths, English and ICT, supplemented by other subjects according to each student’s interest and enthusiasm. We also cover a wide range of life skills, including swimming, first aid and home cooking. Hackney Community College Hackney Community College offers courses at all levels for 16–18 year olds, with some provision for 14–16 year olds. The welcoming, spacious, safe campus is a great environment to study and achieve, and the college offers high-spec, industry-standard facilities and expert staff to help students get to where they want to be. The college has an inclusive and supportive environment and encourages ambition and success. Courses available include: • Vocational, or work-related courses and qualifications offered in professional, creative, caring, technical and trade professions. • Apprenticeships are available in many subjects. The college will set up apprentices with an employer as well as college-based classes so they earn while they learn. • All students aged 16–18 are given plenty of time and support to improve maths and English, to get experience of work and take part in other activities to prepare them for success. HAIR PROJECT FOUNDATION The Hair Project Foundation is a social enterprise running as a salon and training academy. Through our programmes we give young people in London a chance to change their lives. In addition to practical training and education our students are mentored, helping them to be well prepared as they progress through their next steps. Students not only gain qualifications but also the social skills they require to introduce them to working life. We work in small class sizes of maximum ten students per tutor and have a work-based learning environment in an operational salon. We offer a range of courses including Entry Level 3 and Levels 2 and 3 City & Guilds diploma’s, certificates and awards in hair & beauty. For under 16’s this includes alternative provision, and for over 16’s traineeships and apprenticeships in hairdressing Levels 2 and 3. In addition to providing training in hair & beauty we support students with numeracy, literacy and life skills through innovative inspiring teaching and mentoring. We also offer non-accredited vocational taster projects on and off site for school groups from year 9. Our students can progress onto full or part time hairdressing and barbering qualifications, apprenticeships, work placements or paid employment in partner salons.

INSPIRE! INSPIRED DIRECTIONS SCHOOL The Inspired Directions School offers alternative provision for high needs students struggling to access mainstream education. Established by the charity Inspire! an Education Business Partnership, we have been an alternative provider for young people in Hackney since 2008 and in 2014 achieved independent school status. Fundamental to our ethos are the values of individuality, collectivism and progression.

The schools intake is predominantly vulnerable students with multi agency involvement, and highly complex educational needs. These include students who have been excluded from mainstream school or other PRU provision, students with Education, Health & Care Plans and school refusers.

JOBWISE TRAINING Jobwise Training are a family run training provider founded in 1979 providing qualifications and employment and developing a stronger workforce for London’s future. We take pride in the development of the individuals on our programme and are unique in our methods of ensuring each are work ready before sending them out to employers. In addition to our accredited courses we are proud of the extra support and development we give to our students. ‘The Jobwise way’ includes tailored workshops, interview preparation, CV writing, personality and professionalism building events like networking coffee mornings and Dragon’s Den. We work with 16–19 year old school leavers, college leavers and individuals looking for an alternative to university. Our full time study programme offers students aged 16–19 and based in London, the opportunity to complete Functional Skills at Entry Level 3 to Level 2, traineeships, apprenticeships and a wide range of other vocational courses. Students on a traineeship are developed alongside the employer and progress is reviewed weekly to support progression to an apprenticeship. We also work with other organisations and charities to provide awareness and training in a number of areas during our tailored workshops.

SKILLS FOR GROWTH ‘Advancing education and employability for young people.’ Skills for Growth is a London based charity, established for over 31 years, we work with young people over the age of 16 to achieve the skills and qualifications they need to be able to progress into full time employment. We have a wealth of experience in delivering engaging programmes, such as our apprenticeship programmes, which support successful achievement and progression. We hold assessment days where our expert student recruitment team give quality advice and guidance to identify an individual learning plan which ensures all students get the skills and qualifications they need to be successful in their chosen area.
Study Programme Students benefit from a supportive learning environment which ensures they achieve essential qualifications in English and maths and receive relevant work experience to gain the skills to progress into an apprenticeship or traineeship.

Sparkplug: Motorcycle Project Sparkplug primarily employs the medium of motorbikes and pedal bikes to address the social and educational needs of children and young people that may have been excluded from mainstream education as a result of emotional, behavioral, learning difficulties and a variety of other reasons. Sparkplug has tailored its services to focus on engagement, and uses a preventative approach to address the wide ranging and complex needs that the young people we work with present. We provide accredited courses in motorcycle workshop OCN Levels 1 and 2 for students in years 10 and 11 but we also take year 9 students. In addition we are a AQA (Assessment & Qualification Alliance) registered centre and offer accredited courses in health & safety at work, rights and responsibility, citizenship, employability skills, including CV writing and interview techniques. Motorcycle and pedal bike repair and maintenance classes are always in small groups with no more than 8 students at any given time, this ensures that we build high quality relationships with our students and offer additional support if needed. Our students usually either progress on to a college offering vehicle/ motorbike mechanics and/or an apprenticeship in a garage environment.

YOUNG HACKNEY Young Hackney is the Council’s service for all young people aged 6–19 (up to 25 if you have support needs). At Young Hackney centres, you can enjoy free sports, media and arts activities, take part in accredited programmes such as Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, or volunteer for projects that will benefit your community. Young Hackney workers can also give you advice and support so you can achieve the most from your education.
